elcome to the 30th edition of Sporting Horse Magazine. 2017 is well underway and what an exciting time of year this always is, when we have the opportunity to step back and see if all the hard work has paid off on a weekly basis. We hope you enjoy what we have put together in this first quarter issue. The recent Horse of the Year Show dominates this edition, with coverage of the Warmblood, Friesian, Irish, Boerperd and Connemara Classes.The competition ran over 7 (rainy) days in February and was once again a hotly contested affair showcasing the finest equine athletes in South Africa.

The Veuve Clicquot Masters Polo (Page 65) was held recently at the magnificent Val De Vie Estate just outside of Paarl.This event has over the years become one of the top fashion and equestrian lifestyle events in South Africa. If you have not attended before, make sure you do so in 2018. Two great competitions on the horizon are the President’s Cup, held annually at the end of March at Maple Ridge Equestrian Farm and The Nissan Easter Festival, 8 - 17 April at Kyalami Park. More on these on page 20 and page 12. We jump a little ahead to one of my personal favourite events of the year, The Callaho Warmblood Sport Horse Auction on the 3rd of June 2017. (Page 6)Truly a world class event, even if you are not looking to buy, this is definitely a pilgrimage you have to include in your annual schedule. As part of our Artist Feature Series on page 74, we spend some time with Hout Bay artist Robin Kutinyu. His ability to capture the essence and movement of equine athletes is something to behold. If you ever visit the Hout Bay market, make a point of stopping in, you will be amazed.

The ninth annual Callaho Auction: 3 June 2017 The much-anticipated 2017 Callaho Action takes place on the 3rd of June at Callaho Stud, near Christiana. Since the inaugural auction nine years ago, this annual event has become one of the most popular fixtures on the South African sport horse calendar.

his year’s 41 auction riding horses (21 mares and 20 geldings) are a remarkable group of youngsters representing the very best of international bloodlines.

Callaho’s multi-talented stallion Lissabon is the best represented sire among the auction lots, with eighteen progeny, followed by jumping dynamo Con Coriano with nine progeny and the late For Joy with three progeny on auction. Making up the balance of the auction riding horses are two mares by Stolzenberg, a mare each by Contendro I, Corinth, Granulit, Manaloj, Sandreo,Titanic and Verdi and two geldings sired by Casparon and Valentino respectively. In this article, Sporting Horse takes a closer look at the progeny 8

of Callaho’s most influential three stallions: For Joy, Con Coriano and Lissabon. For Joy’s progeny debuted at the 2009 auction, with the first son of For Joy sold at auction being For Sure, produced up to Medium level by Ingeborg Sanne. For Sure also has the double honour of being both the first For Joy foal to be born at Callaho, and the very first horse to be auctioned by Callaho Stud (being the first auction lot at the 2009 Auction). The successes of For Joy’s progeny in the show ring since 2009 are too many to mention here, but four up-and-coming stars who immediately spring to mind are: FIORELLA (Sire: For Joy, Dam: Ravella (Raphael/Watzmann), sold at the 2010 Auction, was the winner of the 1.40m Championship

at the 2016 Nissan Winter Classic under Ray Korber and has also been competing in the 1.45 – 1.50m classes. FOR RAY (Sire: For Joy, Dam: Kidria (Calato/Masetto), also a 2010 auction lot, has been the winner of numerous 1.20m Championships under Charles Roberts. FIONA VELLA (Sire: For Joy, Dam: Ravella (Raphael/Watzmann), from the 2013 Auction, was the winner of Leg 1 in the Showjumping division for 7 year olds in the 2016 Young Horse Performance Series under Claire Martin. Demonstrating her versatility, at the recent 2017 Horse of the Year show, Fiona Vella and Claire took home three titles, i.e. the SASA Open Working Hunter, the Adult SASA Champion and Show Riding Horse. FOR SCOTTY (Sire: For Joy, Dam: Scottish Lady xx (Crown Collection xx/Big John Taylor xx), sold as a broodmare at the 2014 Auction, has gone on to become a star under saddle with Kelly O’Connor, winning Leg 4 of the Showjumping division for 6 year olds in the 2016 Young Horse Performance Series. Holsteiner stallion Con Coriano is the favourite of a number of the Callaho team, who describe him as oozing personality and having the “wow” factor. Affectionately known as “CC”, his first crop of four geldings were auctioned in 2013, and over the years

his progeny have proved extremely popular with buyers looking for a top jumping prospect. As they mature, his offspring are now starting to prove their superiority in the show ring. Three lots from the 2013 Auction who are creating a stir in the ring at the moment are: CONFIDOR (Sire: Con Coriano, Dam: Zidria (Padinus/Calato), who is currently placing regularly in the 1.35m classes, and tied for first place in the 6-Bar Competition at the 2016 Nissan Winter Classic with rider James White. CON QUITO (Sire: Con Coriano, Dam: Quitaska (Quidam’s Rubin/Grosso Z), who is winning in the 1.30m classes and competing in 1.35m classes under Jan Kleynhans. CON CARINO (Sire: Con Coriano, Dam: Carina (Capitol II/ Pikoer), winner of two 1.10m Championships with Cailin Fensham. Lissabon arrived at Callaho in 2008 and has since proved himself a pivotal stallion in Callaho Stud’s pedigree base. Unbacked colt Lansink was the first of Lissabon’s offspring to be auctioned (at the 2013 Auction) and at the following year’s auction, ten Lissabon progeny were sold, amidst great demand for this bloodline. Despite being such a recent arrival on the South African sport horse scene, Lissabon has made his mark locally

as a competitor, initially in the Showjumping ring and, since his retirement last year from jumping, in the Showing ring, where he has been making waves (recently winning the 2017 Horse of the Year Show Supreme Breed Champion title). He is also already proving himself as a sire of champions, with many of his progeny making quite a stir in the Young Horse Performance Series last year, such as: LANSINK (Sire: Lissabon, Dam: Piquette (Pilot/Paradox I), ridden by Ray Korber, was the winner of Legs 1 and 3 for 6 year olds in the 2016 Young Horse Performance Series. Lansink also proved his talents by winning the 1.30m Championship at 2016 SA Derby. LAMAZE (Sire: Lissabon, Dam: Piquette (Pilot/Paradox I): this talented gelding, ridden by Christa Alberts, was the overall winner of the Showjumping division for 6 year olds in the 2016 Young Horse Performance Series. LEXINGTON (Sire: Lissabon, Dam: Fiorella (For Joy/Raphael), sold at the 2015 Auction, was the overall winner of the Showjumping division for 5 year olds in the 2016 Young Horse Performance Series. LIBERIA (Sire: Lissabon, Dam: Alaska (Argentinus/Quidam’s Rubin), also auctioned in 2015, won Leg 3 of the Potential Showjumper

division for 5 year olds in the 2016Young Horse Performance Series. LORENZO (Sire: Lissabon, Dam: Ramona (Ramiro Z/AchillLibero H), from the 2015 Auction, was the winner of Leg 2 in the Potential Showjumper division for 5 year olds in the 2016 Young Horse Performance Series. These three sires - Callaho’s foundation stallions - are already becoming legends in their own right, who between them have produced crop after crop of correctly conformed, talented offspring demonstrating exceptional rideability and versatility across the disciplines. NISSAN EASTER FESTIVAL SOMETHING SPECIAL With nearly 5000 spectators expected throughout the 10 day show, 10 active arenas and approximately 160 classes, the 2017 Nissan Easter Festival is expected to be the best yet, and with competitors from countries such as Zimbabwe, Botswana, Swaziland, Zambia and Namibia, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s imperative that the committee members of Kyalami Equestrian Park deliver a show like no other.

During the event I will work hand in hand with the rest of the KEP team making sure that all runs smoothly and on time and ensure that those who attend have a wonderful experience. We aim to keep growing the numbers of both competitors and spectators, and with that providing a fun filled 10 days of entertainment for the whole family. There are new events on the cards such as the Nissan Navara Challenge where Showjumping Superstars vs the

Eventers All-stars which takes place on Good Friday, as well as the very popular Nissan Six Bar event on Easter Sunday. There’s also the Nissan celebrity fancy dress which always provides plenty of laughs as well as the rather competitive Nissan Laduma Soccer Challenge. Outside of the arenas there will be numerous stalls including a number of food vendors, a beer tent, a petting zoo, the Nissan Test Drive station showcasing the All New Nissan Narava as well as face-painters and more for the children. t’s all systems go for the 15th Erreplus Presidents Cup 2017! The riding world is getting ready for the first major event on the 2017 Showjumping calendar, the 2017 Erreplus Presidents Cup! This prestigious event will be once again hosted by Verity Combrink and her team at the impeccable Maple Ridge Equestrian Centre, Kromdraai near Krugersdorp from the 29th of March to the 2nd of April 2017.

This is the 15th Anniversary of the President’s Cup and last year’s winner, Chris van der Merwe will be back to defend his title. The show has a total prizemoney of over R350 000 which makes it one of the biggest shows of the year.

The Turnierstall Hilmar Meyer Young Rider Showjumping Series is sponsored by top quality sport horse dealer in Germany, Hilmar Meyer. The series takes place over three legs and the final leg will be held during the Spring Fair in September at Maple Ridge. The Series is restricted to young riders between the ages 16 and 21 years old and was won by Laurence Mowatt in 2016 on Hillview Paddy. The winner of the series wins an air ticket sponsored by Hilmar Meyer to Bremen, Germany with accommodation for two weeks, two shows, spending money and a trophy.

Well respected FEI Level 3 course builder, Kevin Spratley will be heading up the course building team. Kevin hails from Cape Town and he has an impressive track-record, having built many SA Derby, FEI World Cup Jumping Series, SA Outdoor Grand Prix and other National Title Show courses. Kevin, a rider himself, is also a petrol-head and is a keen Superbike motorcycle track racer. He is assisted by the very experienced and popular FEI Level 2 course builder, Kate Launder. This may be Kate’s first FEI Level 3 debut as she has been accepted to attend the FEI Level 3 Course Seminar in Bulgaria in the second week of

There are a few titles up for grabs during this show, these being The Erreplus Presidents Cup, The Sharp Colt Trophy for the Adult Overall Winner, the first leg of theTurnierstall Competition sponsored by Hilmar Meyer, the P.R. 1.10 “Whisperer” Trophy Presidents Cup and “The Webber” Junior Presidents Cup.

It is a fun day for any equestrian enthusiast and there are always stalls and good food on offer. his was the wettest HOY we could remember and we were really anxious on Thursday afternoon when the heavens poured down yet again; but Friday turned out to be only cloudy and cool. It was a lovely day for both competitors and horses. Our judges were Dominey Alexander and Sue Dittmann formerly of Brandenburg Stud.

Supremes on the Sunday where he took the ultimate title of HOY Supreme Gelding Champion 2017 for his delighted owner Madelie Booysen.

The two of them worked well together to finally elect the eye catching stallion Callaho’s Lissabon as Grand Champion Warmblood In Hand.The Reserve Grand Champion Warmblood in Hand went to the mare, Dageraad Giselle.

Callaho’s Lissabon won the Warmblood stallion Champion In Hand and in Reserve Champion position was Saltash Atlanticoure, Megan Uren’s colt with Namibian blood lines.

Completely new to the ring was Terry Herholdts surprise entry which she bought some years ago, after the dispersal of Dageraad Stud. Dageraad Giselle is by Numero Uno out of an Ozmium sire line. This lovely dark bay mare moved very well with good lift and follow through of the hind leg which took her through to win the SA Warmblood Mare In Hand Championship too. The Gelding class was well represented with stiff competition. Rambleholm Free Spirit by Five Star won the automatic Warmblood Gelding Championship. He went onto the 30

Another Five Star son was Reserve Warmblood Gelding Champion: Compton House Flight Path owned by Karenza Hunter.

On Saturday we had the Warmblood Ridden Classes which were judged by Nicky Wright the International SASA judge and Siobhan Records was the Riding judge. There was a super contingent of horses up from the Eastern Cape which were beautifully presented and ridden amongst our local horses.The final Championship selection which came through was made up of 3 Callaho horses. They were: Callaho’s Lissabon (rider Claire Marcus Maloney); Callaho Sharif (owner Helen Gilfillan); Callaho Fiona Vella (owner Claire Martin); Rambleholm Free Spirit (Madelie Booysen); Rivendell Patria (owner Susan Hatesohl). The Champion Warmblood Riding horse went to Rambleholm Free Spirit with the Reserve Champion being given to Callaho’s Lissabon.

Normally we are all expiring from the heat, but this year HOY was held in the pouring rain and it was quite a different experience for our riders and Connemaras, they had to deal with conditions that they are not really accustomed with, they rose to the challenge and did a really great job. Our Judge Greg Goss was impressed with the standard of our breed. We held 9 classes in total the judge was Greg Goss. he SA Boerperd Breed joined Horse of theYear (HOY) for the first time in 1998 under the very capable leadership of Ms. Heleen Pope, who still organises the SA Boerperd Breed classes annually 19 years later. When HOY was moved from NASREC to Kyalami Equestrian Park in 2000, it was a logical decision to keep supporting this wonderful initiative that can be seen as a national show case for all active horse breeds in South Africa. During the last couple of years, the SA Boerperd was one of the best represented horse Breeds at HOY. Exhibitors, owners and studs are passionate about displaying this only fully indigenously developed South African horse breed on this showing platform. The SA Boerperd also competes with great success in General Breed Classes, as well as SASA classes.

As usual the SA BoerperdYouth Action, who automatically include all SA Boerperd riders under 19 years, surprised exhibitors and spectators in and around the arena by sponsoring free chilled water under the SA Boerperd label to quench the thirst on this first sunny day after a week of rain. These young riders are committed to the future of the SA Boerperd breed and make a difference by forming a close knit support team for each other across all the various disciplines in which they compete. They believe wholeheartedly that the SA Boerperd is indeed the ideal sporting and pleasure horse. 1. Tell us about your younger years – where did you first start riding and whereabouts? My first experience with horses was when I was on holiday in Scotland. I was treated to a riding lesson at the famous Gleneagles Hotel in Perthshire. Here I met the biggest mare I had ever seen and to top it off, she had a moustache! My love for horses and riding started at Megan Hayes riding school in Beaulieu, when I was 10. My sister had a pony called Candy Floss and eventually when my parents realised I wanted to persist with my riding, they bought me my first pony, Blackie aka Little Star. We had a super time together at the pony camps and after lots of patience and understanding from Megan we started to compete at the SANESA shows where we had lots of success especially in the dressage and showing classes. 2. I believe your parents supported your interest in equestrian sport – do they also have a background of being involved with horses? Tell us a little about their association with the equine fraternity including your sister, who rides for the Lipizzaners? Yes, both my parents have played a huge part supporting me in my equestrian pursuits. My mum and dad first met way back in the 1970’s, when my mum bought my dad’s show-jumping ponies. My mum went on to compete and represented Scotland in the Pony Club National Show-jumping Championships and my dad in the Pony Club Tetrathlon Team, which involved running, shooting, swimming and riding cross country, dare I say dad was a demon over the country! My mom went on to run her own riding establishment and completed her BHS teaching examinations. During this time she trained with Richard Davidson and William Micklem. If it wasn’t for horses my parents would not have met, got married and moved to South Africa. My mum rode at Lipizzaner’s in 1985 and again in 1991 and my sister Alexis, is now following in her footsteps and is a trainee rider at the centre. 3. Do you have any fond memories of ponies that were special to you during your children’s career? Little Star: (Blackie) was my first pony and the reason for my love of riding. Jump for Jenny: Showed me that with hard work comes reward. She also brought me into the show jumping and equitation arena. Jaclag Bannut Mandarin: (Beano) – for showing me the meaning of success and the effects of gravity! Miss Dynamite (Priscilla) – for being an awesome competitor and everyone’s dream pony.

Miss Chantilly Lace – for challenging me every day and teaching me the art of riding hot thoroughbreds. 4. Who were your first Instructors and how do you think they inﬂuenced your early riding years? Apart from Megan Hayes who I mentioned earlier;Tossy Raymor had a huge influence on my early riding career. She established a solid base for me to build on. I remember countless exercises of poles on the ground and counting strides over and over again until it was ingrained. Many of these exercises I still use today with my horses. I have fond memories of little Blackie and me following Tossy’s famous Godfather around the arena trying to copy their every move. If it wasn’t for Tossy’s influence my parents would never have bought me my first “proper pony” Jump for Jenny. After buying Jenny, I moved to the well-known child/junior instructor, Chad Cunningham. With Chad my riding blossomed. From only ever jumping 50 cm with Blackie, Chad managed to get me jumping 1m with Jenny and later 1.10m with my amazing grey pony Miss Dynamite. However, it wasn’t plain sailing; I remember being terrified of 90cm fences and not wanting to go to shows. To add to it all, Jenny was a very careful pony and would stop if you weren’t accurate. I got over my fear of jumping through Chad’s insistence on getting the basics right and by him introducing me to Equitation. The discipline encourages harmony between the horse and rider and concentrating on the correct way of riding, helped me build on my confidence levels and conquer my fear. From this solid grounding, Jenny and I went on to win many Novice Equitation Titles. When my parents built Willowbrook in Beaulieu, I was blessed to have my ponies at home for the first time. Having seen the value of Equitation, I was naturally drawn to Yvonne Bolton teaching methods and I remember feeling very honoured when she agreed to be my trainer in this discipline.With Yvonne, we did the impossible and managed to get my first horse Long Beach, a hot thoroughbred, equitation ready. In Junior’s we won many titles and even made the SA Provincial team in 2011. At the Individual Equitation championship we qualified for a place to compete in the prestigious Philip Smith Memorial Equitation Championship. My jumping instructor at this time was none other than Lorette Knowles Taylor. Lorette helped me in the latter part of my pony career and during my transition into Juniors. I loved my time being part of the Farnham team and countless victories I enjoyed there. It was due to Lorette and Barry that I was able to acquire one of the best horses I have ever ridden, Aquablade. Issue 30 SPORTING HORSE

5. Jaclag Bannut Mandarin was a very special pony – give us a little insight into how and when you were fortunate enough to start riding him? Shelby Kleynhans asked me to ride Jaclag Bannut Mandarin(Beano) when she finished her pony career. He had an abundance of character and just shone in everything he did. His quirkiness sometimes led to clashes and I was often left looking up from the grass with a bridle in my hand watching him disappear into the distance! I did, however, record my first big win on Beano; the Pony Riders Grand Prix at the Royal show in 2010. It was a sad day for our family when we handed Beano back to Shelby. 6. Which discipline did you compete in during your younger years and what were the highlights at that time? Did you compete in any Provincial Teams at SA Championships? In the early days my competitive riding was mainly in dressage and showing. Only after I got Jump for Jenny did I become familiar with the showjumping arena. I still have a passion for dressage and believe it is an important base for any showjumping rider. Tell us a little about when you won the Philip Smith Memorial Equitation Championship? What were your impressions of the Royal

Dublin Horse Show that you travelled to as part of your prize for winning this prestigious event? Never have I been so nervous! Three strange horses and competing against 3 top Junior riders, the bar was set high. However, I felt prepared. In the run up to the event I spent my afternoons at Farnham Stables with Lorette jumping a variety of horses. The evenings were spent under floodlight having dressage lessons with my dressage instructress at the time, Gill Taylor. As you can see there was no time for homework! I had two possible Equitation horses at the time, these being, Long Beach or my dad’s big Holsteiner, mare Carla. I had no idea which horse to pick. Only on the eve of the competition was the decision reached – it was to be Carla. As it turned out, the correct decision was made and after much relief and joy, Gill and I set off to the Dublin Horse Show to enjoy my wonderful prize. The Dublin Horse Show, what a laugh! - Amazing people, magnificent horses and a jovial atmosphere. I wish I could go back! One of the highlights was having the privilege of walking the 5 star courses with Con Power, a famous Irish Showjumper. 8. When did you move to Anne-Marie Esslinger as your coach and in what way has she impacted on your career? After winning the Philip Smith in 2012, I moved to Anne-Marie Esslinger, my current instructress. Through her very structured and methodical approach, my riding has gone from strength to strength and I am now competing competently in the open classes. I admire Anna’s competitive nature and the confidence and calming aura she brings to every aspect of the sport. Another thing about Anna is her incredible dance moves that she whips out at many cocktail parties. 9. How did the acquisition of Aquablade inﬂuence your Jumping career? Aquablade came into my life in the year 2012.The second I sat on his back I knew he was something special, even though he insisted on going sideways into every jump. The day I tried him I jumped the biggest fences I had ever seen in my life and this seemed to

busy schedule? Horse riding has not been my only sports Love affair. I first started dancing Hip Hop and was part of the “Brat Pack” that represented South Africa at the International Dance Festival in Prague, when I was 10 years old. It was a wonderful trip and fantastic to meet dancers from all over the world. Shortly after that I started Latin American dancing at “The Studio” in Chartwell with Sheila Bath and Dave Campbell. I competed with many dance partners and in 2012, I was fortunate enough to dance at the British Open Championships in Blackpool, England.That was an amazing experience and I hope to be able to go back one day. Due to time pressure, I stopped dancing while in matric but since I have been at the University of Pretoria I have put my dancing shoes on once again. I am now part of the TUKS dance team and looking forward to representing TUKS at the next intervarsity dance competition, later this year with my dance partner and girlfriend Katya. 12. Give us some details of the Degree you are following at the Pretoria University at present? I am currently studying a BSc in Real Estate which does not entail selling houses as some of you may think. 1. How did you first hear about him and once you had tried him, what were your first impressions? We first heard about Paddy from our friend and stable manager at the time, Cindy Gaines Burrell. Cindy, like Paddy, was from Zimbabwe and knew him as a young horse. She was also good friends with Debbie Taylor, who was Paddy’s owner at that time. I tried Paddy for the first time in 2012 at Shongweni show grounds and let’s just say it was an experience. The jumping part was not the problem, we knew he had a big jump and was up to any challenge. He was however, a big step up from the little thoroughbreds I was riding at the time. The excitement came when it was time to walk him back to the trailer, which he arrived in. Let’s just say the Lipizzaners airs above the ground had nothing on him. Once Paddy left the relative sanctuary of the arena we exploded into a medley of joyful bucks and jumps while 17 year old Laurence was thrown around on top like a cowboy. Thankfully we made it back to the trailer in one piece with Paddy feeling thoroughly chuffed with his attempt to frighten me off. However, I was not deterred and went back to Shongweni a couple of weeks later to feel that amazing jump again. Later that week Paddy arrived home and the adventure began. 2. Do you have any idea of where he was bred and produced?

Paddy was bred in Zimbabwe and bought by Debbie Taylor when he was a yearling. He came to South Africa with Debbie when she immigrated. She produced Paddy through the grades and competed very successfully in the 1.40 classes. As a youngster he was lazy and in an attempt to invigorate him, Debbie sent him to the race track to train with young race horses. As you can imagine he wasn’t any good as a race horse, but the treatment seems to have worked as he is now very forward and energetic to ride. Paddy did a variety of disciplines in his youth including eventing and the odd dressage test. He was a particular talented eventer due to his bravery. Debbie often said he had the potential to become a four star eventer. 3. Does he come from a bloodline that produced any other successful jumpers? Paddy is by an Irish sport horse called Guinness, out of the Tilden mare, Ashlingh. His sire jumped in the open classes and Tilden is a renowned producer of good jumping horses. 4. You have had Paddy for several years now – give us a little insight into your early relationship with him? When I first got Paddy I was definitely over horsed. His enormous stride and strong personality was a challenge. I remember my first lesson with Lorette on Paddy was Issue 30 SPORTING HORSE

interesting to say the least. We only jumped small but Paddy didn’t know that. He flew over every fence unseating me and even popped the double combination. He also refused to eat and seemed to go on strike for the first couple of days at Willowbrook. After calling the vet in a state of panic, we found nothing wrong. We came to the conclusion he was home sick and longed for the green grass of Natal. Eventually he settled into his new life with us and just went from strength to strength. After we got the hang of each other there was no stopping us and the rest is history. 5. What sort of personality does he have and what is his reaction to the show environment? Paddy only has two rules: Rule 1, Paddy is the boss. Rule 2, if you think you’re the boss, Paddy will refer you back to Rule 1. But, in saying this, you couldn’t ask for a better boss. He is strict but very rewarding when you get it right. He has a strong personality but also has a kind heart. He loves getting his face and ears rubbed. His joyful, naughty face and love for his work puts a smile on my face every day. At home Paddy is an angel and a pleasure to ride but he knows when it’s show time. At shows there is a little button that activates and he goes into sports mode. He grows in the show arena and you can feel the extra horse power kicking in.This is how this brave little (16, 1”) Zimbabwean horse can fly in the open classes. 6. All top horses have some quirks – what are Paddy’s and what is he like round the yard? He is naughty on out rides but loves to work in the school.You always know when it’s feeding time as you hear him rasping his teeth on the aluminium checker plate of his stable door. 54

Like any top athlete Paddy, has a very high opinion of himself and knows he is the king pin. On out rides he doesn’t understand the need to walk as he thinks it’s much better to jog everywhere. In saying this, he is also a bit insecure and prefers a friend by his side, whether in lessons or at away shows. 7. Naturally winning the Hilmar Series last year was a tremendous achievement- have there been any other memorable moments with this talented jumper? It was great to win the Hilmar Meyer Series on Paddy as we had been runner up on the two previous occasions. Winning at my last attempt was very rewarding. Another great time for Paddy and I was when we won the Junior Derby and Junior President’s Cup at consecutive shows. The Junior Derby was a particularly fun day as Paddy loves all the Derby fences and the going in the Bob Charter arena seems to suit him. The President’s Cup classes are always a reflection on a horses jumping ability, as consistency is key. Paddy proved his worth and produced a clear round is every class over the 3 days to claim the prize. Paddy and I represented Gauteng at SA Junior Champs and were victorious on several occasions. We have also competed in several WCQ and have notched up some good wins and places in the 140/145 classes. 8. What are your equestrian goals in the future with Paddy? Paddy was originally bought as a junior transition horse and has far exceeded these expectations by getting me into top level competition. I really would love to win a Riders Grand Prix with him this year, as I believe he is more than capable of doing so. Paddy loves to jump and I am sure we will have many more victories in the show arena this year.

THE FEI CHILDREN’S INTERNATIONAL CLASSICS FINAL By Joanne van Achterbergh & Yvonne Bolton

he South African Leg of the FEI Children’s International competition was held at Kyalami Equestrian Park in 2016 and after the two classes Simone Nish and her Coach, Joanne van Achterbergh were thrilled to find that she was the winner of this prestigious event. This led to her being invited to the very special FEI Children’s International Classics Final to be held in Guadalajara, Mexico. So it was with great excitement that Simone and Joanne arrived in Guadalajara on the 22nd January ad checked into the Grand Fiesta Americana Hotel. That very evening they attended a Welcome Cocktail Party for all the Riders, Coaches and their families and got to know some of the finalists, who arrived from many countries across the world. The following day they travelled to the magnificent Guadalajara Country Club, where the competition was to take place. A most beautiful venue that catered for many different sports and included the Equestrian Showgrounds, where Simone would be competing for the following week. The next day started with the Vet Inspection of the horses that had been provided for the competitors and it was reassuring to see the quality of the horses available!! Once the Vet Inspection had been concluded, it was time for the much anticipated Draw – a tense time for the Foreign Riders whilst they waited to see who they would ride over the next few days. Simone drew an 18 year old Belguim WB – Vicky van het Geinsteinde – a chestnut mare. The first two Training sessions went well and Simone found that Vicky was sensitive, but very rideable. However, the Warm Up class was a serious learning curve for Simone, who found that Vicky was very different in the ring. She had a huge canter and a tendency to get quite strong around the course.

Their First Qualifier was preceded by some very exciting 1.30m & 1.45m classes where the standard of riding and horses was exceptionally high. This was followed by a Parade of all the riders and the build-up allowed the competitors to feel really special. Once into the event Simone found the track very technical and the fences substantial, which resulted in her having an unlucky 3 fences down. Vicky was super honest but tended to get extremely strong and in addition spooked at the big TV Screen on the approach to the combination. Joanne commented on the talent among the young riders, which was impressive and she felt she had to continuously remind herself that they were only 12 – 14 years old. After the Second Qualifier, where Simone had two fences down, her Team finished in a very commendable 2nd in the Team Event. What always characterizes these Finals, the competitors enjoy an enormous amount of time socializing and making new International friends while they relax at the pool or are entertained by their hosts. A Tequila Tour on the Friday was much appreciated by the Adults affording them an insight into where the well known Liqueur originates. Finally, their last day of an incomparable trip arrived and it was time to bid farewell to Mexico. A trip that they was so memorable and exceptional that they would look back on for years to come with very fond memories. Simone and Joanne were full of praise for all the equestrians in Mexico who had produced such an outstanding event and made them feel so welcome. Joanne’s final comment “A Great Show – Amazing people and a lovely Country!!”

THE IMPORTANCE OF A GOOD QUALITY SADDLE FIT - PART 1

addle fitting is an attempt to prevent long term damage to the horse’s back by alleviating pressure on the reflex points, and to distribute the rider’s weight optimally over its back.

Once you have purchased your horse, the second most expensive investment as a horse owner is, well should be; a good quality saddle. This is because it is the interface between the horse and rider for the rest of the partnership. A good quality saddle should be viewed as an investment, as when properly cared for and maintained it will not only be a saddle for your current horse but will also be available for possible future mounts as well.

The saddle, and a saddle fitter’s work, should never be considered in isolation from the other influences in the horse’s life as these influences are somewhat interdependent. For example, if the horse’s nutrition is altered or your training method is changed, this will directly affect the muscle development in the horse’s back which will change. It then follows logically that because the horse’s back has been altered, the saddle will no longer fit – and the reason is not because the saddle fitter did a bad job.

It is also expected that during a horse’s life, his three dimensional back shape will change many times. It is just like humans – as we grow up, our bodies change; as we exercise or train, our bodies change; and as we age or change our diet, our bodies A horse’s conformation will change over the course of its life change. The same is true for the horse. Obviously, depending due to many influences, the least of which are his level of training on how extreme the change in the horse’s shape has been, it and age. These influences are things like the rider, the trainer, may alter the saddle fit to a lesser or a greater extent. The talented local and international players captivated the fans as Team Shimmy won the opening match against Team Val de Vie. With a burst of energy in the last minute,Team Shimmy took the match against Team Veuve Clicquot with a score of 5 – 7. Veuve Clicquot President and CEO, Jean-Marc Gallot, enthusiastically threw in the ball at the start of the final game. The Shimmy team took home the coveted cup and Vodacom awarded Honours, owned by Nigerian polo player Adamu Atta, the Best Playing Pony of the day. Tom de Bruin was selected by La Martina as the most valuable player of the match. The perfect day to dress up, watch some world class polo and dance the night away.

LIAM STEVENS Quiet, unassuming and easy-going Liam Stevens has a steely determination, a passion for horse breeding and comes from strong equestrian bloodlines. This promising youngster has the girls in a spin, the horses loving him and the show jumping world in awe. Look out, here comes Liam. 23 year old Team Nissan Show jumper Liam Stevens was born in Cape Town and lived in Hout Bay until he matriculated and moved to Johannesburg to pursue a career with horses; “I started riding competitively when I was 13, and before that I played basically anything that involved a ball. I always loved horses, having been around them my whole life, however was never really interested in riding until I watched my father jump the Outdoor Grand Prix at the Easter Festival one year. I think that sparked my competitive nature and I have been very focused on Show Jumping ever since.” “My Father, Damian, is a true horseman. He has a passion and enthusiasm for horses and the industry as a whole that I have always taken motivation from and admire the ‘feel’ that he possesses in both his riding and coaching,” says Liam. Damian Stevens was born in Yorkshire, England, and moved to South Africa in his early years with Liams’ grandparents. He started riding when he was 6 years old with Trevor Lovgren and since then has ridden with some of South Africa’s best, among them Rogan Asken, Phillip Smith and Janie Myburg. He has competed in Europe and rode at Grand Prix level in South Africa; “My parents were also very involved with racing before I was born and continued to be so throughout my childhood. Now 51 years old, my dad lives in Cape Town where he is actively teaching, riding and transporting horses around the country. He has played 72

a central role in my riding career and I owe a lot of my success to his mentorship.” “I remember us finding Nissan Wanda together. We went to try a School Master type horse, 9 years ago in England. The horse that we were looking at was entered in a show at Hickstead, so we were asked if I could ride Wanda (then a 5 year old) in a class in one of the back arenas. She was outstanding and we fell in love. I stayed on to ride her for the remainder of my school holidays after my father returned home. She was a nightmare and I was petrified of her. My father spent many hours convincing myself and my mother that we couldn’t come home without her. Thank goodness he believed in her from then!” Accomplished showjumper Rogan Asken says that Team Nissan Show Jumper Liam possesses perseverance, patience, sensitivity and passion in abundance; “He is obsessed with horses and the art of training and riding them: he is a wonderful role model for younger riders. It serves him well too that he is the child of two avidly intelligent horse lovers. His attention to his own diet and weight is a good example of his professional commitment and I believe that he has what it takes to go all the way.” Jonathan Clarke echoes Rogan’s thoughts with regards to Liam’s parents;“I think that the support and guidance of both his parents,

â&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been surrounded by art my entire life. My father was an acclaimed sculptor who specialised in wildlife and painted in oils in Zimbabwe. I first started at the age of five doing rhinos and finishing my fatherâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pieces. I honed my skills and sold my own first collection of birds and turtles at the tender age of ten. Since then, I have been completely absorbed by animals, the human figure and sculpture, the movement and anatomy of animals and human form. I try to capture the essence of my subject for example an animal, by immortalizing a certain moment, a look and feel of what is happening. My work is about the soul of my subject, not just the outer form worked to perfection. I have made my way from understanding my material and the possibilities it gives me to shaping the intangible of an idea, an image,a concept. There are different ways for me to get inspired.The sculpture might develop from an idea that forms in my mind.Textures create an image. Or I might travel thousands of miles to find an unexplored quarry where I wander around and listen to the stone calling out to me to be worked. Quite often I see in the freshness of nature the complete sculpture in a rock formation. Working in the silence of the desert is like a retreat, where often sculptures start taking shape, getting their first overall expression. 78

Moving stones that weigh several tonnes is a refreshing exercise to me.The tension between raw material and finished piece keeps me excited all along the process of creation. I consider it a challenge to catch the movement of the human form in its endless variations. Studying the masters like Donatello, Bernini and Rodin taught me a lot about the different forms the human body can be presented in.To choose the right expression and media for an idea is the task that sets my work apart. I use many types of media; alabaster and zebra stone from America, wonderstone from South Africa, semi-precious stone from Zimbabwe, jasper from South Africa, Italy, Namibia and Madagascar. Wood, wax, and even ice sculptures, granite, marble, picture stone, sand stone, metal and cement. My favourite stones are granite, for its multiple texture finishing qualities, marble for its classic association with sculptures, bowenite, potoro leonardo, jasper, sodalite, picture stone for its dazzling colours, spring stone and wonder stone for the contrasting texture between polished and unpolished. I have regular private collectors in USA, Germany, England, Australia, Switzerland and a small but growing number in South Africa, one of the highlights being two life size tigers commissioned by the mother of an international sports figure.

A collection went to the National Zoo & Aquarium in Weston Creek Australia, and I have held personal exhibitions at the Safari Club International in Reno, Afridesia Gallery, Red Bank, New Jersey, and an art promotional exhibition held by the Spanish ambassador at his Cape Town residence.
