The Capital Stud auction on 18 and 19 November is also a much-anticipated event coming up for the first time this year on page 6. With Capital Stud’s already wellknown standards, we look forward to a fantastic new annual event on the calendar. Frances Cheboub of the South African Warmblood Horse Society looks at Showjumper lines that show up in the rankings, an informative look at which lines are popular and the importance of breeding for what the market demands, on page 25. We catch up with internationally recognised artist, Erna Goudbeek, as part of our regular Artist Feature on page 64. he Cell C South African Derby is the toughest showjumping challenge and thus the most sought after title on the equestrian calendar. The 18 obstacle, 1200m course is only ever won by the horse and rider combination that is the fittest, the most focused and the most on form on the day. Attended by over 5000 people, this event sees the Who’s Who of the fashion and riding worlds gather for a day of welcoming hospitality, family fun and equine excellence. Doug Mattheus, Cell C’s Head of Marketing, elaborates on their involvement in the sport: “We are proud to be supporting this iconic and thrilling equestrian event. It celebrates high performance and community, and we look forward to being a part of it. and further interest in furthering the aims of equestrian sport in South Africa. The SA Derby, hosted by Kyalami Park Club, is the major event in our calendar and I’m sure this year with the support of Cell C will again deliver a thrilling crowd - pleaser by the riders and their supremely talented horses.” Top competitor Bronwyn Short says that there’ve been so many shows this year that she feels her horses are fairly fit and ready so it’ll just be training as usual in the build up, “I’ll be competing on Fountain of Love (affectionately known as Lilly) 1.50m, Quidchin Bellignies Z 1.40m and Carlson 113 1.30 They work as normal before the show, except for a few practices of derby type fences.They are bold so I don’t overdo it; just remind them about what’s coming. Co-owner of Burlington Stables, Anne-Marie Esslinger says she’ll only start to focus on Derby now that the Revil World Cup Qualifier is complete, “I plan to compete Alzu Oregon in the 1,50m classes and am hoping to qualify to participate in the Cell C SA Derby which we won in 2015. Then I have Carinjus in the 1,40m division in order to qualify him for the Mini Derby this year. In terms of preparing my horses in the weeks ahead, I’ll increase the fast work and interval training on the track (I have already done some of this) – then start working on the Derby “funnies”, doing bank and slope training as well as practice on the ‘St Andrew’s Cross’ and the

“Devil’s Dyke”- it’s all about building confidence for my boys… My top horse, Oregon, is a flighty animal, and I’m not sure any competitions are his “favourite”! But he is brave at the spooky fences – his main fears are noise and the practice paddock. Carinjus takes everything in his stride and is not easily phased, although he has a lot of “blood”. Perhaps the most experienced campaigner is Team Nissan Showjumping captain Barry Taylor who says that no fence scares him, “But I am wary of a few jumps. The major one is the double of gates which takes precision riding and the horses are general tired by then.The bank, dyke and water all have their own tests. I don’t get nerves though it’s more a feeling to do well as I always expect to be at the top. In terms of possible winners, Nicole Horwood must be the favourite, plus Nicola Sime and a couple of young riders. I think I also have a good chance... everyone needs a bit of luck on the day to win.” Watching this year’s action will be the ever popular Lorette Knowles-Taylor who’s been ruled out of action having had a spate of bad falls; “In addition to some horrid falls, I’ve been smacked on my head twice by my horses - just freak accidents - no one’s fault, however it resulted in back to back concussions. I have been out of action since the Shongweni World Cup and just to be safe will be off until January 2018. It’s now not really about the riding - it’s just if

I fall off and have another blow to my head that’d be a problem, so I’d prefer to be safe than sorry! My husband Barry will be competing at Derby on my top horse Nissan Catwalk 22- whom he rides beautifully. He was unlucky in the Reonet World Cup at Revil Stables recently, just touching a pole in the jump off and ending 7th. I’m really hoping that he has a great derby - it was Kitty’s first one last year and Barry gave him a “beaut” of a round (I was on rest then too after shoulder surgery).” Two times dressage derby winner Siobhan Records says her horses are all in good form for the derby; “I have a string of horses that I’ll be competing on at this year’s derby, and will compete in the big derby on Lynda Records’ Royal Darco. SHOW JUMPER LINES THAT SHOW UP IN THE RANKINGS In South Africa, like we saw at the Rio Olympics last year, showjumping draws the crowds. It is interesting to look at which stallions are featuring in show jumping both as a guide to breeders and to the buying public.

Looking to the future we have to embrace the following facts: • Firstly, we have two major studs Callaho and Capital, that have changed the outlook and level of jumper breeding in South Africa. But the smaller studs still have a lot of valuable breeding knowledge and must not be overlooked. Good horses are available if you take the time to visit them. • Secondly, we are getting better access to frozen semen of top performing stallions via three main importers being De Bruyn Equine, Iconic Sires and Embriosem. • Thirdly competitor’s level of professionalism and ability to finance, have select few going overseas to buy horses and so strengthen the depth of our available talent. Today, without a doubt we have a stallion that stands out in our statistics due exclusively to the achievements of his offspring as he was injured as a youngster and has never competed.That is: CONSUELO (Corofino I/ Landgraf I/ Romantiker) Holstein family 2554. He is the best represented sire in our show jumping. On SA Showjumping’s June 2017 listings there are 26 horses in the 1m20 ranks having him as a sire and 3 as the sire of the dam. So, he starts with a high amount of horses at this level spread between a range of competitive riders and non-professionals. This is looking at 581 horses (allow for small variable) that brings him just under a 5% representation. In the 1m30 &35 section (excluding looking at horses competing at higher levels) the numbers drop to 318 (allow for a small

variable) and here Consuelo is still seen leading with 11 horses sired by him and 2 of the mares sired by him. He reflects at around 4% of the horses. Finally, he proves the reason for his popularity by topping our list as a breeding sire of winning horses in the 1m40, 1m45 & 1m50 section. The Otjozonjati bred Sunnypark Stables Elpaso [dam: Voigtland Etemba (Graveur/ Anschluss)] is, in September 2017 lying 3rd in the 1m50 ranking. He had a super show in August where he won the Revil Stables Reonet FEI World Cup Qualifier. Neu Heussis bred Fulvics Connoisseur [dam: Neu Heussis Alma X (Seducer xx/ Anschluss/ Graveur)], a stallion, is lying 8th in the 1m50 Rankings. These two horses are both ridden by Nicola Sime-Riley. Fulvics Connoiseur at this year’s Easter Festival, won the SA Adult Outdoor Grand Prix 2017. While Andrew Oliff also competes in the 1m50 on Pegasus Wealth Managements Amazonas The SAWHS has recently licensed an exciting son of his, Branic Consuelos SAW owned by Kelly O’Connor who has just started his competition career. Of the approximately 76 horses in this section there are only 5 Namibian horses competing. The other two being Zonjati Bonny Clyde by Bono van de Kiekenhoef in 1m40 and Seeis bred Blue Turtle Atmore by imported Indoctro semen and both of these are out of Consuelo mares.

Alzu Okinawa Michelle Hobb’s last Optimum sired horse

Then we move to For Joy (For Pleasure/ Don Carlos/ Antried) Hannover breed line 3191402 (735). Imported by Callaho Stud in 2003 he brought the valuable line of For Pleasure that is a huge asset in our breeding herd. For Joy had competed at International Show jumping level with Jessica Kurten. Once in SA he was produced by Jaco Fourie (then manager at Callaho) for dressage and within three years became the highest ranked SA dressage horse here. This is a testament to the talent and temperament of the horse. Our SA buyers have only been able to access his offspring via yearly auctions at Callaho. His first stock came onto the market in at the inaugural Callaho Auction in 2009. In the 1m20 classes we see 9 horses sired by For Joy, and 1 as the dam’s sire. With the big fall away as the horses progress up the grades we see in the 1m30&35 section For Joy in 2nd position behind Consuelo, with 8 horses competing in these classes. Considering how long it takes to get horses to the 1m50 classes, it is a great achievement off a small base, to see that For Joy already has a horse in the 1m50. Jeanne Korber’s Style Fragrance’s Callaho Fiorella [dam: Ravelle Hann (Raphael / Watzmann/ Gotthard)] For Pleasure, his sire, lies 2nd in the Rolex World Breed Federation Sire Rankings for 2016. He had very strong representation at the Rio Olympics. The following horses there, were all ridden by women! Flora de Mariposa for Penelope Leprovost, French Team

(For Pleasure x Powerlight x Quito de Bussey. Barron for Lucy Davis USA Team (For Pleasure x Nabab de Reve x Goldspring de Lauzelle). Fit For Fun 13 for Luciana Diniz, Portugal individual (For Pleasure x Fabriano x Escudo I). Shiraz Hann (Stakkato/ Raphael/ Pik Konig) Hannover breed line 1189204 (511) was Gerrie du Toit last imported stallion and his first offspring start being recorded in 2002.This stallion brought in the new Hanovarian jumping line of Stakkato that dominated the German FN breeding values from 2002 to 2011. Shiraz jumped in the 1m50 classes in SA and was later bought by Capital Stud. In the 1m30&35 section Shiraz is in 3rd position with a total of 6 horses sired by him and 1 where the dam is sired by him. At present, he has none competing in 1m40 classes upwards. While neither of these stallions are available For Joy died in 2015 and Shiraz is now retired in Mauritius, there is a wide base of Shiraz mares, but the For Joy stock coming through will be more limited. Then we have a number of stallions represented by 4 progeny in 1m30&35 section. These include stallions who stood locally Optimum van der Wellington BWP, Canello Holst by Calando Supreme Hann another Stakkato son, all now deceased. The imports include the popular lines of Chacco blue Meck (Chambertin/ Contender) who lies 8th on the Rolex WBFSH Sire rankings 2016, Lord Pezi Oldb (Lacros/ Zymbal) and Stakkato himself.

We also see Escudo I Hann (Esprit/ Arkansas) getting some representation here where he continues the old German E-line. Eskapade III (Escudo I/ Graff Grannus/Wettsreit) a stallion, is competing in 1m30. El Bundy’s (a son of Escudo ) frozen semen was used by Callaho Stud and those horses are already on the circuit competing. We also see an exciting and versatile, modern grandson of Escudo I in Berghof Eragon (Edward/ Metternich/ Graff Grannus), licensed by the SAWHS still at the beginning stages of his career.

The mare of both these horses is Rivervale Romance who received Premium competition status with the SAWHS after competing at 3* long format level eventing and jumping at 1m35.

Another stallion to keep an eye on is the newly licensed Esaro W KWPN (Harley/ Indoctro/ Nimmerdor) owned by Tamzyn Wegrostek. Jumping into 1 place at the Revil stables 1m35 Welcome Stakes, this horse is a picture of his KWPN sire Harley VDL keur (Heartbreaker/ Carthargo z/ Caletto I). At the recent KWPN Spring performance test two Harley sons received the highest marks as showjumping stallions. The KWPN judge’s comments said they exhibited great rideability, type and excellent canters.

Optimum van der Wellington BWP (Randal Z/Furioso/Mellinor) is still reflecting in the top classes. Anna Marie Esslinger rates Alzu Oregan as her top horse for the Cell C Derby 2017. Optimum been popular with riders for many years. His first progeny is recorded in 1998. Initially this stallion did not pass his stallion license when presented to the SAWHS. However through competition and the talent of his progeny he was accepted 7 years later. Optimum was ridden by Michelle Hobbs in the 1m50 classes, a winner of Grand Prix’s. He eventually competed against his own progeny Alzu Oarsman (A. Esslinger) and Alzu Obligation (M. Hobbs), before his retirement. Alzu Ottawa is presently ridden by Michelle Hobbs and she poignantly says she has her last Optimum horse coming into 1m30 now called Alzu Okinawa. Alzu Okinawa is out of the super mare Rathmor Pretty Woman (Landjunker/ Wachmann III).

The progeny of Bono van de Kiekenhoef BWP (Skippy II/ Grannus/ Isenstein) has recently caused interest with the success of his offspring becoming evident. Initially brought to Namibia by Sitta Voigt, there was not a lot of interest from breeders there. He is now owned by Rivervale Stud in Natal where he has been sparingly used but with success starting to show. Zonjati Bonny Clyde won the Outdoor Grand Prix at Shongweni Festival in August. Westphalen lines on the bottom. He was bought from Principal stud by Franlaren Stud where he stood for the rest of his career. There are stories to go with every stallion, but this horse proved all his detractors wrong and found a second lease of life with Dominey Alexander in the saddle winning the WC Qualifier in 2003.Today he has 2 offspring jumping at this level, Franlaren Lord Larrymore and Principal Legionnaire who are still in the lines ups today. Then we move onto imported horses.Tying with Consuelo with 3 progeny in the top classes is: Catoki Holst (Cambridge/ Silvester/ Cor dl Bryere) (Holst family 4705) who jumped in many 5* Grand Prix. He is being increasingly noticed through his offspring’s achievements. His grand sire is Caletto I, which means that there is Cor dl Bryere breeding both top and bottom of the pedigree. He has three horses in the 1m50 one of them is the stallion ridden by Barry Taylor for the Jansen’s called Catwalk 22 (Catoki/ Corofino I), presently ranked 15th. Iconic Sires will have frozen semen available for Catoki this coming breeding season. Following him is Cicero Z, and Winningmood who also both have 2 progeny at this level. Herciro van t’Kieselhof BWP (Cicero Z/ Puccini/ Latano I) was licensed by the SAWHS as a young horse. Now gelded it is good to see him at the top of the sport. Cicero Z is (Carthago Z/ Randal Z/ Graphit) like his father the famous Carthago Z,

both jumped at the highest level and both do well with their progeny being sought after. Interesting to see is that Randal Z is the sire of Optimum vd Wellington. The blood line is clearly coming through. Cavalor Winningmood BWP (Darco/Cassini/ Ladalco) was ridden international by both Ludo Phillpaerts and then Lucian Diniz winning some of the biggest Grand Prix’s on the circuit.Very interesting is that Capital Stud’s Don Cumarco, who has done pretty much the same thing in SA, winning everything including breaking the record of taking 4 Derby title wins in SA, is bred similarly but in reverse. Capital’s Don Cumarco BWP is sired by Cumano (a son of Cassini) and is out of a Darco/ Montevideo xx mare. At the Shongweni Festival his son Capital Don Castello joined him in the 1m50 classes, a real achievement for Capital Stud. Capital’s Don Cumarco is currently ranked 10 in the 1m50 classes and hardly needs any introduction after all the successes he and Nicole Horwood have had. Another younger stallion Capital’s Hitoshi BWP (Winningmood/ Sioux de Baugy/ Lurano) is directly sired by Winningmood. He recently won the FEI World Cup Qualifier at Revils Stables show in August 2017 and has also won 2 other WC Qualifiers. Fast coming into the spot light with wins and good placings after quite a spectacular rise through the ranks to the 1m50 level, is Hummer van het Bevrijdthof BWP (Cardento/ Action Breaker/ Fleurie du Manoir) owned by Slade Equestrian and ridden by Jonathan Clarke. Cardento, his sire, features in 10th position

of the Rolex WBFSH Sire rankings 2016. After Revil Show Hummer ranks 11 in the 1m50 classes. He was presented for licensing earlier in the year and received a premium. He is directly available to the public via the owners, Slade Equestrian. Another interesting stallion to recently come into the 1m50 classes is Rivendel Numerology. He is the first Numero Uno KWPN son to compete at our top level. Notably Numerology is bred from a superior imported mare Calvyra Z (Calvaro Z/ Ramiro Z) who competed internationally overseas and received a Premium with the SAWHS at her inspection. He is now owned by Peter Morrison. Numero Uno KWPN (Libero H/ Lord Calando/ Ahorn z) frozen semen is available here to breeders. Capital Stud’s Homerus (Darco/Cash/ Lord) has recently joined the1m50 ranks and brings the popular Darco line to the fore once more. It seems Darco lines are very rideable and Capital stud continues to see success with these lines and we again refer to Capital’s Don Cumarco. Parco frozen semen is in use in South Africa and the good temperament has been backed up by this offspring. Understand this article as a broad look at a very big canvas and I finish the article just after Revil’s WC Show. What I have tried to show is that it is important to breed to what the market is wanting and the talents the stallion can produce. I have attempted to show how present breeding is reflected in the jumping levels and what lines are popular.

Tell us about your younger years – when did you start riding and whereabouts? I started with formal riding lessons at the age of 4 at Pheasant Hill in Irene. However, when I was only 3 years old, I used to accompany my sister to her riding lessons at the Cornwall Hill stables. Then when the grooms brought the horses into the stables I would beg for a ride and drove them crazy with my “Up Up” as they walked past. Later when she was riding in the Lead Rein classes, I would hang on the fence and shout “Legs on, Legs on”!!! Have your parents supported your interest in equestrian sport and have any other members of the family ridden themselves? My parents have supported me all the way, even though my father wishes we had played golf or chess, when the bills come in, however, he has accepted that this is the sport that I want to do. My mother is my main pillar of support and my late Oupa was a big motivator and supporter too. He always believed that I would be a top rider and I am just sorry he was not there to see me receive my Protea Colours and ride in Algiers. They came from a racing background and my mother rode for the South African National Defence Force. My mother has sacrificed so much and dedicated all her time to make sure that I can reach my full potential – nothing has been impossible or too much effort for her. She has also taught me the importance of ‘hands on’ stable management and how to care for our horses after a work out or competition. Do you have any fond memories of ponies that were special during your children’s career? Yes Gimili – my very first pony, who is now doing therapy work with children. Then the very talented, Lorelock Birthday Belle, who was the most amazing pony and my Open Eventing pony, Polar Express. Polar Express was also ranked the top barefoot endurance pony in the country, at a time when I was competing in the Endurance Discipline.

with flat work and the rider’s seat being of utmost importance to him. He also introduced me to Eventing – my favourite discipline. We moved around after that and even rode with Bill Johnson – the most wonderful character – who made us laugh a lot. Eventually my mother and father realized that this was not a passing phase and sold up in Cornwall Hill Estate and they bought a plot closer to all the top instructors in the Kyalami area. Bringing the horses home was the best thing ever. The two most important instructors who have been instrumental in my riding career to date are Chad Cunningham and Carl Boonzaaier. They have had endless patience and during my pony years Chad taught me invaluable lessons as a horsewoman.When I listen to Chad discussing horses and riding, I realize just how much there is still to master and learn – he is amazing. They both made me believe in myself and that I could do anything I set my mind to. Having moved to the Junior ranks – who was your ﬁrst horse and as you have moved up the grades have you acquired some others? My first ‘horse’ was Vyfhoek Rhythm Divine – the super talented Boerperd x TB who was a pocket rocket and just loved to jump. We were given her thinking she was a pony, until we measured her and found that she was 1.53cm. However, she moved and jumped like a 16.hh horse. I also had a very quirky Namibian Desert horse, whom we rescued – Little Dot - an amazing eventer and who show jumped up to 1.00m. She was super brave and fast but lacked a good technique and my mom now hacks her. At this point my sister went overseas and I inherited her two horses as well – Capital Carrera, who was jumping 1.10m at that point and Iron Ruler. I don’t think I would have coped with Iron Ruler if it was not for the experience I gained on Ruby and Dot.

At present I have the Eventer and two show jumpers to work and Who were your ﬁrst Instructors and how do you think they I have just backed and am producing a Udokes youngster with the help of Chad and Simone, who is turning 5 in December. blossom from a 3 year old and she is currently leading the YHPS for potential show jumpers of 4 years old. Which Disciplines do you compete in now and what have the highlights been? I have always competed in Eventing, which is my favourite discipline. I currently ride my little TB – Just Evangelic. He was originally given to my sister to ride, but she wanted to event and in the early days he would not go near the water. My mother then did a bit of Endurance on him before moving onto Equitation and finally Eventing. Unbelievably he went straight through the water and we all laughed when someone shouted “who says Evan doesn’t do water!” After that I snapped him up and he has been fantastic with us winning the SA Junior Open Championships in 2015. I was also selected to be part of the team to compete in Zambia for the Inter Africa Cup Challenge. That was so much fun and SA won the series. I also compete in Open Equitation – the highlight being invited to represent SA in Malaysia. I have competed in Open level Working Hunter as well on Capital Carrera and have won numerous championships in both Disciplines. Then I compete in Show Jumping on both Iron Ruler and Capital Carrera – the magnificent old man (Iron Ruler) has taken me around a 1.50 track and was highest qualifier in the Mini Derby in 2016. However the highlight of my riding career was definitely being awarded my Protea colours for Show Jumping this year. I just 46

about burst with pride and happiness when I put on the blazer for the first time. We read the letter from SAEF/SASCOC repeatedly to make sure that it had been sent to the correct person!!! How do you think Equitation has contributed to your overall riding career? Equitation is a discipline my mother has always loved and initially introduced me to. However, she gave up after a few shows, as we would plan the test and once in the arena, I would do everything totally differently – it drove her crazy. Nevertheless, we persevered, as she felt that to jump show jumping tracks well you had to have style, technique and discipline and she felt that Equitation promoted these principles. Now I encourage all my school team riders to do Equitation at SANESA. You were selected to represent South Africa in Penang, Malaysia in 2015 to compete in the International Exchange Programme – tell us a little about your impressions of that trip? It was the most fantastic opportunity and it would be wonderful if these International Exchange Programmes were available more often. It certainly broadens your horizons and in my case it was amazing as my parents cannot finance a trip like this for me to ride overseas. So unless I earn it or qualify for such a competition I would not be able to enjoy such an opportunity. More recently you qualiﬁed to ride in the Final of the FEI Gold Tour in Algeria – give us some insight into how this Championship is organized? I was one of two riders who qualified for the FEI Adult World Cup Challenge Gold Tour (1.30m), Kyla Brimacombe being the

I believe your mother got Iron Ruler for your sister, Michaela, off a farm near Bapsfontein – tell us how this happened? My sister had a lovely Warmblood x TB – Le Grand Garcon aka Big Boy, whom she outgrew and she needed a horse with more height, as she herself is very tall. My mother put the word out amongst friends and as a result she heard about this TB that was doing nothing. They sent us a photo of him, but obviously when he was a lot younger and he looked fantastic – athletic looking and with the height required for Michaela.

when he is jumping the big classes. What were your impressions when you ﬁrst rode and jumped Iron Ruler? I have always had very hot ponies and then Ruby was my first junior horse, who was a handful but loved to jump, so Iron’s temperament did not faze me. My mother was worried though, as I have a hot seat and he is a hot horse. When I took over the ride 2 years ago he was already jumping the 1.30m classes and had done one outing with Michaela in 1.40m. He is the most amazing horse with a fantastic work ethic and the biggest heart. He has never stopped or run out since we got him as a 15 year old. What personality does he have and what is his reaction to the show enviroment? To give you an idea, in 2015 Ray Korber rode him in the Mini Derby and he said he is the strongest horse he has ever ridden. However, he has never run away with me, he just wants to get to the jump and he knows his job and loves it. For all his flat work and fitness work he goes in a snaffle and only has the Hackamore combo for shows. I was invited to ride at the Dome, when they had the first big competition there and he went in at night and jumped the track, as if he had been indoors all his life. All top horses have some quirks – what are Iron Ruler’s and what is he like around the Yard. 50

He is the gentle giant in the yard and we call him Boet. Some of the other horses try to bully him, but he just walks away. He never looks for trouble with anyone and you can put him in the paddock with any horse and he never picks a fight. He loves to play and remove fly masks and when I do stable checks at night he goes mad when he hears the bucket with the late night snack. He also loves to have his hindquarters scratched and stands for ages with his lip curled with pleasure. Iron also has to work and he becomes visibly depressed during the AHS Vac break, so I have to walk him out every day regardless. Looking in such good condition for a horse of his age – do you have him on a special feeding programme? Not really, my mom is very strict and he is her pride and joy. They are all on Spurwing – he gets the senior mix and show time mixed for weight maintenance. His meals are broken up into 4 a day and before a competition we cut his food to keep him cool. Training wise he does not do any big jumps at home. Dr Hildegard gave us a programme for him 5 years ago and we have stuck to it ever since. He does trotting poles and flat work at home and actually only sees a track when he gets to a show. My mother believes a fit horse is a sound horse and she treats them all like top athletes after every work out. Their legs are sprayed down and bandaged or iced depending on what they did and the going.

he Dealer Principal of Land Rover Durban, Andre Schrenk, was on hand to award the title of the 4th leg of the South African FEI World Cup Qualifier Competition to the on-form combination of Lisa Williams and her Hanoverian gelding Discovery Campbell.The Andreas Hollmann Memorial Trophy was presented in memory of the much loved and highly respected International Course Designer, the late Andreas Hollmann, who designed and built numerous courses for FEI World Cup Qualifier Shows in KwaZulu Natal. Martin Minett (Pietermaritzburg) and his fabulous Namibian Warmblood gelding Zonjati Bonny Clyde were worthy winners of the 1.40m FNB KwaZulu-Natal Outdoor Grand Prix Championship and Howard Arrand (the Provincial Head of FNB Business KZN) presented them with The Tongaat Hullett – KZN Showjumping Grand Prix Floating Trophy. n 1971, after travelling to America and spending time with international equestrian powerhouse George Morris and in Europe at the first FEI Instructors Convention, Charlotte Stubbs embarked on her vision to raise the standard of riding in South Africa.

Herself a top rider, Charlotte introduced the Discipline of Equitation through the BP Plan, where the art of riding correctly was encouraged specifically through the outlying regions of South Africa. It was obvious that in order to achieve the development of the standard of riding, proper instruction and training would be required, so the South African National Instructors Plan (SANIP) was born.

Charlotte identified a number of successful advanced riders and instructors who became the founding members of what is now known as Level 3 Instructors and the benchmark for the envisioned standard for all future instructors. Remember that this was the late â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;70â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, and South Africa was excluded from international exposure due to our political situation, Nonetheless SANIP flourished and, working with the South African National Equestrian Federation (SANEF) continued to asses and produce instructors who in turn kept raising the standard of riding and horsemanship. As substantiated worldwide, an equestrian instructor has got to have a comprehensive knowledge of the horse including its behavior and physical requirements.The pathway to becoming an equestrian instructor was therefore done over 3 levels of Equine Management (Now known as modules 1-3).

In 2003 Charlotte handed the SANIP reins over to Di Pieterse, who had been working with Charlotte since 1992. At this time other industries such as Tourism, the SA Defence Force, SA Police Services and private mounted security companies as well as the disciplines and Southern African countries had bought into the SANIP process, and it became clear that SANIP would need to encompass the whole industry and not just sport. In 2012 the administration of the SANIP was formalized under the Equestrian Qualifications Authority of Southern Africa (EQASA), a stand-alone company with a board of Directors and Di Pieterse still at the helm. EQASA is a member of the International Group of Equestrian Qualifications (IGEQ) â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a body made up from representatives of 35 countries. This means that our EQASA assessments are recognised via an Equestrian Passport in all member countries, as well as by the Federation Equestre Internationale (FEI). It also means that our standard is monitored by observers who travel to all member countries to ensure that the minimum standards are adhered to.

A National Qualifications Act of Parliament was written, and a government body created to drive the National Qualification Framework (NQF).This body is called the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA). SANIP approached SAQA to write government recognised qualifications for our industry, and a working group of experts took the subjects that Charlotte had identified all those years ago, updated against modern trends and practices and wrote 1-4 into the format required by SAQA. At this time there was no Professional Body for Industry, so these programs (modules) were parked with two of the Sector and Training Authority (SETA) Skills and Training bodies, namely AGRISETA and CATHSSETA. EQASA was recognised by SAQA as the assessment body due to its history and International affiliation.

In 2014 the Council of Equine and Equestrian Professionals of South Africa (CEEPSA) was created in keeping with the SAQA policy that industry should be looked after by Professional Bodies representing that specific industry. 1998 brought many changes regarding Labour and Education. As such, CEEPSA, together with the body under SAQA called the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO) has written the Equestrian Coach/ Instructor/Trainer/Riding Master qualification. EQASA will remain the assessment body. This means that the original qualifications are now in the correct format and will be a true South African Government owned qualification. The assessments will be industry driven as each stakeholder will be invited by EQASA to determine their specifications against the qualification.

The legacy Modules 1-4 are being realigned into the new format via a partnership with CEEPSA and the SETAS, and when complete we will have Equine/Equestrian Qualifications and part qualifications that meet the National Qualifications Framework requirements and are therefore South African Qualifications which will be recognised internationally. We are also proud to say that a number of schools have included the Department of Basic Education Equine Studies curriculum in their grade 10 to 12 subjects. EQASA has over 2700 alumni.

So when we look back at Charlotte Stubbsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; vision, although technology and trends may have changed, we have exceeded her expectations; the Instructors Plan is thriving and in safe hands, we have South African Instructor Qualifications; a Professional Body for the Industry and riders who can (and have), hold their own internationally - this in part due to the dedication and hard work of our leading instructors and trainers, most of whom have gone through the SANIP/ EQASA system or through the discipline of Equitation coming back full circle to Charlotte Stubbsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; initiatives 41 years ago.

outh African FEI International, Show Jumping Judge, Di Baxter was honoured this year to receive an invitation to officiate on the Ground Jury of the Dublin Horse Show CS105*/ CSIYH1*. This prestigious Show hosts classes including the International 7 & 8 year olds, The FEI Nations Cup, The Land Rover Puissance and The Longines International Grand Prix of Ireland all world famous jumping events. Di had this to say about her trip: “It was a full week of judging some of the best horses and competitors in the world. Absolutely awesome and what an incredible privilege. The excitement amongst the full stands of thousands of spectators during the Nations Cup had to be seen to be believed. It was fantastic to see how the crowds got behind each and every competitor, however, when it was an Irish rider – the roars were thunderous, creating an atmosphere beyond words. The Show is so renowned that there is a very formal dress 64

code of Top Hat & Tails for the gentlemen officials and Dresses & Hats for the Lady officials. The USA won the Nationals Cup and they were worthy winners, who rose to the challenge and delivered faultless rounds. I was also fortunate to judge the 7-8 year old horses and all I can say is that I will be watching out for those horses in the future. They were magnificent and some will definitely be appearing on the world stage in years to come. The Puissance was another experience with the wall ending up at a height of 2.25m – quite spectacular to judge. Whilst at the Show I also took the opportunity to steward at the Horse Inspection for the International and Nation Cup team horses. To be officiating alongside some of the world’s most esteemed judges was a total privilege. Having been on the Ground Jury for a whole 5 days and experienced the Horse Inspection, I was able to observe, listen and take notes. Hopefully, I will be in a position now to impart some of this knowledge, gained during this eye opening trip, to other officials and administrators in our sport locally.”

Sporting Horse Magazine spoke to this internationally recognised artist who is inspired by her love of nature and the passion her subjects evoke in her oil paintings

rowing up in Holland, what influenced you and shaped your future as an artist in your younger years and who or what would you say has been a major influence and inspiration? When I was growing up as a child, I lived in the centre of a city, but I was very fortunate to have parents that ensured I learnt about nature. We used to cycle and walk in the nature, visiting nature reserves to see wild birds and animals in their natural habitat. One of my first loves as a child was drawing with pencil; I spent lots of time drawing, animals mostly. When I met my partner Brian, we decided to look for a house and in 2002, we settled in a small German village just over the border from Holland. We found that we had settled in the middle of a preservation area for wild birds of prey. In that same year, I decided to become a full time artist, leaving my job at the NATO Base in Holland. In this little village where we live, surrounded by nature and wildlife, I find the inspiration I need to create my oil paintings. Here, I feel like I’ve gone back in time yet finally have come home and settled down. My partner Brian built a gallery for me; he is as passionate about my work as I am. He always motivates me to move forward and supports me with everything I do, especially with new projects. As I have grown as an artist, I still feel heavily influenced by my teacher Mr. Guust van den Noort, he was a Dutch old Master! He gave me a great gift; the confidence to paint, he always told me that I am a natural talent.This in turn gave me the will to develop my own technique. I am a perfectionist and I am never satisfied. I strive with each piece to get better, become the best artist I can be. Unfortunately, my teacher passed away, but I feel he is always with me. When

I need it, I just think of his last words to me ”…I believe in you and you will get there, just keep painting with your heart…”. Your subjects are predominantly animals, and horses seem to be a particular favourite of yours. How did this come about? I think that I first became involved and interested in horses when I saw the beautiful horses of my uncle, who bred horses at a farm in Holland, he also had, as I recall, one or two Arabians.Years later, one of my friends bought an absolutely stunning Arabian and I think it was then when I also fell in love with the Arabian horse. I love all horse breeds, but what I find most fascinating about Arabian horses is their raw beauty, words are not enough to describe what I feel when I am busy painting an Arabian horse! There is something special about the Arabian; their beauty and grace is overwhelming, the eyes… large and beautiful, the long arching neck and high tail carriage. I feel it’s energy when I paint such a unique horse. An Arabian horse promotes strength, intelligence, nobility, elegance and of course it’s glorious “floating trot”.

You have exhibited in Abu Dhabi and Bahrain which must have been a fascinating time for you. What were the highlights of your time spent there? In December 2011, I was a finalist in the art competition of the 3rd. International Festival of Falconry in Abu Dhabi (Al Ain), this was my first time in the UAE! In March 2014, I was invited to the Maraâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ee in Bahrain to exhibit my work and where I was introduced to the King of Bahrain. My paintings were so passionately received, the response was overwhelming, that I felt it was tailor made to exhibit my paintings. It enabled me to demonstrate the true emotional engagement in my paintings. When I am painting, I can express my true emotional self in the work. I know I have been successful when I see that same depth of emotional response in the eyes of those who view my paintings. It was a wonderful experience to meet the King of Bahrain and present my work to him during the VIP opening and that he bought a few of my paintings for his collection.The response has been worldwide. Fortunately, my work has garnered a following and I have received a number of commissions.

Time and time again, I hear the same response, “Your paintings are alive”. I try and give the work light and depth, people want to not only be affected by them emotionally, but also want to physically touch the work itself. It has been humbling! Your studio must be a special place to inspire such creativity, where exactly are you based and do you have exhibitions planned or exciting commissions you are currently working on? As I mentioned earlier,my studio is based in a small village called Neugnadenfeld in Germany, still close to Holland, and this is where I find the inspiration I need to create my oil paintings. When I am not travelling to events, exhibitions or fairs, (incidentally where I find a great deal of my inspiration), you can find me in my gallery, where I can work peacefully - just painting! I am most at peace while listening to beautiful music or just the sounds of nature around me when I start to think about painting. At the moment, a part of my collection is on display in a gallery in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. I have several wonderful commissions now to work on (private collectors), and I am building up a collection in my gallery. My goal for next year is to continue to progress and explore new events/ exhibitions internationally! What has been your proudest or most rewarding achievement so far and what are your hopes and plans for the future? We hope it includes a visit to South Africa!

To be the artist I always wanted to be and to follow my passion. I took a risk when I gave up a career that I worked very hard to achieve. Being an international artist of some standing is a dream come true. Some of my successes have led me to travel and exhibit in places I never thought I would ever go to, like the 3rd International Festival of Falconry in Abu Dhabi (Al Ain) UAE representing the Netherlands with two of my paintings as a finalist in the art competition, and my invitation with two other artists to the Mara’ee in Bahrain in March 2014 was special too. While in Bahrain, I was delighted to hear that one of my oil paintings was selected for the David Shephard Wildlife Artist of the Year 2014 exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London. My plan for the future is to build up a network of contacts and to be able to exhibit my work further and further around the world. I now have contact with China and hopefully will be able to exhibit my work there and I would love to return to the Middle East again to exhibit my work and to enjoy the atmosphere and warm hospitality of the people! Recently I have started to look for interesting Arabian horse shows, I found out that there are some really interesting shows held in Germany, but no doubt there are many more around the world. It would be a real pleasure for me if I was to be invited to attend one of your shows in South Africa and to be able to exhibit my work to such enthusiastic owners and breeders of horses.

INTERNATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS 2017

By Dr Petro Grové | Photos by Elpita Photography lthough the SA Boerperd is a uniquely indigenous South African horse breed, they can be found in all neighbouring countries. Thus, the National Championships is indeed an International event – the only one of its kind in the world.

The 2017 (International) Championships were held at the Afri-Dome (Parys), 17-22 July. It was the 3rd consecutive year that it was presented during the winter and the 9th consecutive year at the Afri-Dome. The Championships were, as usual, for branded purebred SA Boerperd only. Many breeders, as well as individual owners participated. A variety of classes and disciplines that included the following, were presented: • Breed Classes (Traditional and Universal respectively);

• • • • • • •

Ridden 3-gaited Classes (Traditional and Universal respectively); Show Horse Classes (Ridden 3 gaited classes with high knee action); Ridden 5-gaited Classes; Working Riding and Hunter Classes; Saddle Seat Equitation; Show Jumping; Dressage.

Traditional horses (3 gaited and 5 gaited), have a medium to high movement (higher that 90°), thus take part in classes where movement (and gaits) play a significant role. In Show Horse classes, the horses are expected to show high impact movement with high knee action. The Traditional ridden classes were judged according to the high-low system by multiple breed judges Elra Tonkin, Leon Botha and Sias Horn.

In his experience with open showing as well as other disciplines, Mr. Joubert has found that the SA Boerperd is extremely popular as Child and Junior riding horse. Although riders sometimes riders stray away from this breed they often come back to the SA Boerperd, which is a testament to the reliability of the breed. The Star Foal class that took place on Friday evening, was the culmination of the three years’ planning. This is the highlight of an annual process that starts with the covering of a stallion being auctioned off. The buyer then nominates a mare of his/her own to cover within ± 6 months of the auction. The foal is born within a year and another year later, these foals are entered in a Star Foal Class for to be judged as under 12 months’ olds. This year, the first ridden class of foals’ coverings bought in 2011, were open for entry. It was interesting to see the development of the Star Foals born in 2012/3 could be seen.

often come back to the SA Boerperd, which is a testament to the reliability of the breed. The Star Foal class that took place on Friday evening, was the culmination of the three years’ planning. This is the highlight of an annual process that starts with the covering of a stallion being auctioned off. The buyer then nominates a mare of his/her own to cover within ± 6 months of the auction. The foal is born within a year and another year later, these foals are entered in a Star Foal Class for to be judged as under 12 months’ olds. This year, the first ridden class of INTERDISCIPLINARY CLASSES (Universal or Traditional Horses)

foals’ coverings bought in 2011, were open for entry. It was interesting to see the development of the Star Foals born in 2012/3 could be seen. The Elite 5 championship classes took place on Saturday, 22nd July 2017 after 6 days of qualifying classes. The first five placings in each of the Supreme Championship classes are part of the Elite 5. These championships are divided between similar classes for horses 5 years and older and horses under 5 years respectively with the exception of 5 gaited classes where the division in made at 6 years.

CONNEMARA STUD

he Ashgar Connemara Pony Stud was born in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1979. At this stage the Connemara Pony was almost unknown in Southern Africa. Patience Worthington had imported Kierin of Leam and was breeding Connemara Ponies in Zimbabwe and Sydney Press imported Clonkeehan Barna Boy (CPS 182) and Abbeyleix Tansey to Coromandel Stud, South Africa. My husband and I purchased a farm in Clarens, Eastern Free State, South Africa and I decided that the hardy and versatile Connemara was the ideal breed for this mountainous, harsh and cold environment. I was fortunate to purchase Abbeyleix Tansey (CPS 3103) from Sydney Press and Dundrum (800 Vol 18), the stallion from Mrs Patience (Patricia) Worthington. Patience then gave me Kierina and Coromandel Abbeyline (CPS 8118 Vol 18). At last, the Ashgar Stud was ready to start breeding Connemara Ponies in South Africa and in 1981 my family and the four foundation

Connemara Ponies of Ashgar Stud moved to our farm in Clarens, South Africa. I have read Pat Lyne’s story “Out of the Mist” and of the adventures of the first Connemaras on their long trips to their destinations in Southern Africa, of days at sea, for example Kierin of Leam spent two and a half weeks at sea and then four days in the train to Zimbabwe and still sired a foal soon after he arrived in Zimbabwe! My two stallions Dundrum (CPS 800) and Crockaun Connemara (CPS 674) also known as Croc an Oir “Croc” are no exceptions, Dundrum (CPS 800) spent four days travelling from Zimbabwe to Johannesburg. An hour after his arrival he jumped the fences, set off down the road in rush hour and after an agonising search we found in the neighbours garden demolishing her “Iceberg” roses! Croc on Oir (CPS 674 Vol 16) was leased to the Irish Aid sponsored Basotho Pony Stud each year for their breeding season. He was ridden for two days over the mountains in

Lesotho to the Lesotho Trekking Centre at Modimo Nthuse in Lesotho. From there was another climb to our meeting place forty kilometres from Maseru. The third year he was not at our rendezvous. I had no option but to trail the horsebox up the terrifying Blue Mountain Pass in the hopes that he was at Modimo Nthuse. I was with an American friend who, halfway up the pass, said enough hair-pin bends for him – would I mind if he walked! With my heart in my mouth I continued and fortunately Croc on Oir was at Modimo Nthuse. We then had an equally terrifying journey down the pass but Croc was totally unperturbed and arrived happily in Clarens for another breeding season! Croc on Oir sired the Stud’s next generation two stallions, Ashgar Doogary (SASB Vol 31 No.6), Ashgar Donegal (SASB Vol 31 No.3) and the mare Ashgar Karalee (SASB Vol 31 No. 5). He retired happily at the Stud where he died in 1999.

I have sadly given up breeding the Connemara Pony but have done my best to ensure the Ashgar Connemara legacy continues by assisting Zena Penfold of Millsleigh Irish Sport Horse and Pony Stud (also in the Eastern Free State) to establish the SA Connemara Pony Breed Conservation Program with SA bred Ashgar Cruising (the culmination of the Ashgar breeding lines) and her imported stallion from Germany, Rhinestrom’s Mighty Man. We look forward to continuing breeding and to liaising with the Stud, the legacy Ponies’ existing owners and to encourage new breeders to come on board and to continue the promotion of the breed.

2017 saw a new chapter in Western Cape Dressage, when the Freestyle Dressage Championships were held at the beautiful Rivendell Warmblood Stud in Kylemore for the first time.

ivendell was established in 1992 and under the strict eye of Karin Koep has slowly and steadily built a reputation for producing good, solid, reliable sport horses, many of which are campaigned by Karin herself and the Rivendell auctions have produced some real gems over the years. The recent addition of an indoor arena made the Kylemore setting the perfect venue for the 2017 Freestyle Dressage Championships. The two-day show was held on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th August 2017 and the Western Cape’s best turned out in force to strut their stuff.

Saturday was dedicated to standard dressage classes, which gave riders and their horses an opportunity to find their feet around the arena. Congratulations to Deane Strydom and Arwen Dumbrill in the Pony Rider classes, Shannon Lindhorst in the Juniors and Karin Koep, Julia Tiffin, Nichola Mohr and Carsten Peeters in the Adult division. Dressage may have something of a stuffy and staid reputation, but the addition of the musical freestyle has done a lot to make it more fun and easily accessible for spectators as well as putting a smile on our riders’ faces. Not only is the freestyle an opportunity to get creative with music, it’s also an official excuse to dress up your horse. Sunday was heaps of fun,

with horses and riders really going to town with their music and some inspired outfits with everything from minions to indian chiefs, to a magic carpet ride. The Freestyle tests were all a joy to watch, not least because the riders all seemed to have such a lot of fun – which is what it’s all about at the end of the day. And with the addition of Fanstream, fans, friends and family sitting at home could join in as well. Huge congratulations to Annabel Noakes-Dobson, Arwen Dumbrill, Mimi-Grace Markram, Shannon Lindhorst, Samantha Hardcastle, Nikki Thurgood, Karin Koep, Carsten Peeters, Nichola Mohr and Armin Fritz who all made the podium – it was a privilege to watch you ride. With lots of spectators to cheer our riders on, there was also plenty of entertainment outside the arenas, starting with the great coffee station – a show essential! Natalie Ledgerwood’s Equine Online was the show’s headline sponsor. If you have not yet had a chance to pop into their shop in Vierlanden in Durbanville, you need to make a plan. Or not – as they are equally happy to ship your order straight to your door (but who doesn’t love browsing?). They have become a show day staple and their pop up stall filled with a selection of goodies was good enough to tempt even the most virtuous shopper (or help out in a pinch if any show day essentials had mysteriously gone missing), while their fashion show during the lunch break was another show stopper (even the horses got roped in). But each and every sponsor helped make it a special day so enormous thanks to African Extracts, Asfolath Trust, DrillCo, Equifeeds,

Equiknow, Glenda Francis Physiotherapy, Kuda Insurance, Nichola Mohr Dressage, Pony Pieces, Prancing Pony Publications, Prima Diva, Rivendell Warmblood Stud,The Royal Horse, Laura Kotze, Henk Scholtz and Evidently Green. There was an incredible selection of trophies, rosettes and blankets as well as wonderful gifts and flowers for the riders. Huge credit must go to Karin and her team for doing such a sterling job on preparing the venue and the arenas in particular – not only did they look good, they rode as good as they looked. Chef Julia kept everyone well fed and watered, our commentary team kept everyone entertained and our horses and riders kept us enthralled all afternoon. It may take a village to raise a child, but events like these cannot happen without an army of parents, friends, instructors, grooms, marshalls, judges, scribes, announcers, caterers, sponsors, pompom wavers, photographers, videographers, transporters and many, many more. You all ensured that this year’s Freestyle set the bar high and will be a tough act to follow. While WC Chairlady, Linda Mohr is always quick to acknowledge the many invisible hands that work so hard behind the scenes to make events like this such a success, the one person who always features last on the list is Linda herself, who does so much to motivate, inspire and most importantly, galvanise people into action to make things happen. Chairlady, we take our hat off to you!

he junior team chosen to represent South Africa spent the month of July in Munich at the Ingelsberg vaulting club to prepare for the Vaulting world championship for juniors that were held in Austria in August this year.

After 6 months of qualifying competitions in South Africa, the team was officially announced in June to represent South Africa. For some of the team it was their first time attending an international competition, and for some it was their first time in a plane and away from home.

The team has been together since October 2015, and come from all walks of life. The team is special because they all come from such different backgrounds and stories, and vaulting has brought them all together.They had to overcome language and communication barriers, and also culture differences. 2 of the team members live in Diepsloot, and walk around 45mins a day to get to Shumbashaba. It was here where a program founded by Sharon Boyce introduced the boys to vaulting.

The team arrived in Munich on the 1st of July. Ingelsberg is a very famous vaulting club in Germany, with its vaulters having won many world and European championship titles. The team were given 4 horses to train on, as well as access to a “ cantering barrel “ which the German vaulters call “ movie”.

There are quite a few differences in Germany to vaulting in South Africa. At home we vault much earlier, usually from 2.30

untill 5.30, where in Munich sometimes training only started at 7 at night.This was possible due to the sun setting at around 21.30 at night and being able to train in a huge indoor hall. The team lived together in a huge house for 4 weeks, and bonded as a strong unit during training and some fun excursions. Next came the time to move to Austria for the championship. The team competed on Rajan II, owned by Annkathrin Solf and lunged by Lars Hansen.Their theme for the freestyle section was X men Apocalypse, and the freestyle showed a battle between good and evil for a better world and for peace. A couple of mistakes creeped in for the young team, but they recovered remarkably well to finish 11th overall. Back home, the team has set it sights on competing at the World Equestrian Games in North Carolina in 2018. The team would like to thank everyone for all the help and support in getting them to the World championships in Austria, especially Grant and Janine Walker and Tack n Togs.
