points of focus in an open movement
This project illustrates an outcome of a Japanese culture center situated in the park called “Vasaparken” in Stockholm city. The brief asked for spaces of pause and contemplation and to strengthen the physical activities in the park I chose the martial art of judo, an activity where the body tries to find inner focus and strength. Based on this notion the project explores concepts as opposing forces, flow and concentration and tries to blend these with the landscape of the existing park. It aims at merging the existing park activities with new ones without affecting qualities found today. By raising the ground of the chosen site and creating a roof, space is created below without taking away what belongs to the public. Considerations have been made in this

sensitive environment to keep the public park intact - in fact the project adds a continuation of the park inside and on top of the center for people to enter freely. Besides the activity of Judo practices, this center invites the public to an exploration in Japanese culture. Here you can enjoy some Japanese tea, have a look in the small Japanese gardens or sit down in the open media zone for reading the latest Manga series or listen to some Japanese pop music. Maybe you don’t have any Japanese business in mind and just want to enjoy your picnic with your friends on the green roof overlooking the park. This environment is meant to be open, inviting and lively, which are some of many great aspects you may experience in the culture of Japan.

Counteracting forces
The chosen site in the park acts within the field of the landscape. The terrain grows up towrds the west and gives the possibility to raise the ground and create space beneath.
The form gets its shape from external forces in the landscape and natural phenomena, such as the existing trees and light conditions, together with the internal forces of the program of the project.
Interior exterior The concave and convex outlines work together and create a dynamic roof platform and a continuous relation to the park. You can access the roof easily from the west or the south to to sit down and enjoy the view over the park .
You enter the center from the connecting road in the east. The more public parts of the interior space flows in an open plan with the program located in zones around a central focus point. There is a possibility to dig into the hill to make space for the practice areas of the judo club.
