Sandton Central's attractions are mostly clustered within the malls and while the Gautrain Station is an easy walk from here the wide-lane roads and large intersections with busy commuter traffic are not too welcoming to pedestrians. You'll find that most major hotels have a complementary shuttle bus service transferring guests to the malls, Gautrain station or Sandton Convention Centre. For tourist information head to the Sandton Central Tourism Kiosk located outside the Gautrain Station.

You’ll know Sandton Central by its profusion of gleaming towers, traffic and more traffic, swanky stores and top international hotel brands. Just 50 years ago the current Sandton Central Business District was mostly rolling farmlands, dotted with a tea house and a nearby polo club. Nowadays it is South Africa's economic hub and the location of many of Africa's top company headquarters – earning it the title of Africa's richest square mile. The area's main draw is its status as a shopping mecca. It's also where you'll find the popular statue of Nelson Mandela (a major photo spot) and South Africa's tallest building, the Leonardo, plus plenty of restaurants and bars, and a direct Gautrain rail link to OR Tambo International Airport, Rosebank, Pretoria and the city centre. Visitors often comment on the district's limited walkability and that's because the district's heart is a series of interlinked indoor malls – Sandton City, Nelson Mandela Square and Legacy Corner Mall that spill out onto a square presided over by the Mandela statue. To the north lies the vast Sandton suburbs. The closest to Sandton Central is Parkmore known for its eclectic selection of friendly restaurants along 11th Street. Slightly further afield are the suburbs of Morningside with its upmarket shopping centres and Bryanston, home to Joburg's longest-established market, Bryanston Market. Rivonia is known for its large Chinese community, and for Liliesleaf, an award-winning heritage site and museum, while Kramerville is Joburg's centre of interior dÊcor and design. Ten kilometres directly north of Sandton Central are the sprawling suburbs of Sunninghill, Lonehill and Fourways. The flashy Montecasino Casino and Entertainment Centre with its 24-hour casino, plus theatres, a comedy club, bowling alley, cinema and dozens of restaurants and bars is a major nightlife destination. A study in contrasts, 6km directly east of Sandton Central and linked via the Marlboro Gautrain station is Alexandra (Alex to locals). This is Joburg’s oldest township and one of South Africa's most densely populated suburbs. An important contrast, Alexandra is best visited with a local guide.
Meter taxi cabs are not to be confused with the ubiquitous commuter minibuses used by locals as 'taxis'. If you need a cab the popular app-based taxis Uber or Bolt are good value and reliable. Make sure to confirm your pickup location with the driver. In some parts of Sandton Central, for example outside the Gautrain Station, your app will point you to a dedicated pick-up point. Without a smartphone, another option is Zebra Cabs. Call them on +27 86 110 5105 (zebracabs.co.za). Sandton Central also has its own tuk-tuk fleet (parked on West Street) for destinations within a 5km radius.
Crime and Safety
As in any major city pay attention to your surroundings, be mindful of your belongings and do not use your smartphone in open areas on the streets, as opportunistic ‘phone snatchers’ are known to operate in key tourist areas. For a medical emergency call the 24-hour private medical emergency services on 082 911 (Netcare 911) or 084 124 (ER24) for an ambulance, or alternatively call 112 to be connected to the national 24-hour emergency call centre.

The Gautrain (pronounced ‘How-train’) rapid rail service links Joburg, Pretoria and O.R. Tambo International Airport via two lines. To use the Gautrain buy a Swift Card at the station or pay direct with a contactless bank card. The Sandton Gautrain station opens at 04:35 and closes at 21:35. From Sandton you can travel directly to O.R. Tambo International Airport. The last train to O.R. Tambo leaves Sandton at 21:04, the first at 04:50. Each station is served by a Gautrain bus network linking to nearby suburbs (Gautrain buses run on weekdays only). For Rivonia take the S3 via Rivonia Rd, for Montecasino the S5, for Randburg the S4 via Republic Rd and for Gallo Manor the S2 via Katherine St. On weekends from 08:15– 19:30 a Midi-Bus shuttle leaves Sandton station for Montecasino (and vice versa) every 45mins, tickets cost R10 and can be bought at the station.
Public art at the RMB Think Precinct
SHOP UNTIL YOU DROP Sandton is Joburg’s shopping capital. At its large and glitzy malls you can pick up everything from chic international designer labels, from top-drawer to high street, to quirky South African souvenirs and Mandela memorabilia. For an outdoor shopping experience for crafted goods, along with vegan and vegetarian food and plenty of natural products visit the excellent Bryanston Market, and for the best selection of items from across Africa, Amatuli Artefacts in Kramerville is a worthwhile experience.
DINING OUT Sandton's suburbs house a rich pick of restaurants and there’s a world of choice when it comes to cuisine. From contemporary African dishes, to classic steakhouses, Italian trattoria and classy bistros, South African street food to halal fine dining, you'll find something for every taste.
SANDTON BY NIGHT Sandton isn’t all work. Once the sun sets, head to a bar or club and wind down for the evening. With great cocktail spots, stylish wine bars, rooftop venues, fancy nightclubs and live music, Sandton has plenty of nightlife.
SANDTON PARK LIFE Escape the concrete jungle and relax in one of Sandton’s parks. In the heart of the Sandton Central business district the small Mushroom Farm Park is a popular city hideaway. Further north, the Sandton Field and Study Centre has a lovely cafÊ overlooking a small river. On Saturday mornings put on your running shoes and join in one of the free 5km Park Runs at a local park. See parkrun.co.za to find your nearest Park Run.
SUNDOWNERS WITH A VIEW Sandton Central’s distinctive skyline makes it a great sundowner destination. Enjoy one of Joburg’s famously impressive sunsets with a view over the Sandton sprawl from the San Deck rooftop at Sandton Sun hotel or from the terrace at Alice Lane Precinct. For an eyeful of greenery head to Truffles on the Park at Mushroom Farm Park.
SNAP A SELFIE WITH NELSON MANDELA You'll find Sandton's top photo opportunity on Nelson Mandela Square with one of the biggest and most famous statues of Nelson Mandela. Disproportionate in size it will be a challenge to get you and Nelson Mandela in the same frame. Luckily there's also a miniature version designed for the visually impaired that you can get close to.
REMEMBER THE RIVONIA TRIAL AT LILIESLEAF Liliesleaf farm in Rivonia was the secret headquarters of the anti-apartheid movement in the early 1960s. This is where Nelson Mandela helped found Umkhonto we Sizwe (the Spear of the Nation), the ANC's armed wing, and he and his comrades would later be sentenced to life in prison for their activities at the farm in the 1964 Rivonia Trial. Now an excellent museum, spend an afternoon learning about the fascinating history of the Rivonia Trial here.
TAKE A TOUR OF ALEXANDRA Take a tour with a local guide of Joburg’s oldest township Alexandra (or ‘Alex’) to learn about its unique history and culture. Although a fraction of the size of South Africa's most famous township, Soweto, Alex’s character makes up for what it lacks in scale. A rough patch of land, with higgledy piggledy streets, and plenty of roaming goats, Alex is best visited with a local guide as many of its charms are not easily visible to outsiders.

BUS TOUR A morning City Sightseeing shuttle bus (first stop 08:45) runs between major Sandton Central hotels and Rosebank, from where you can catch the open-top, hop-on hop-off City Sightseeing bus. Alternatively hop on the Gautrain to Rosebank. The Green Tour from Rosebank (one hour non-stop) goes to Constitution Hill from where you can join the City Tour (two hours non-stop) which makes a loop of the City Centre stopping at major museums including the Apartheid Museum.
