PREFACE
The suggested format of A3 was respectfully challenged as the layout of the sheets and the A5 Portrait size compliments the work’s legibility and relative distance better than an A3. With an A3 (to compensate for the size of the sheets in relation to what exactly was planned to be shown) the sheets would have had far too many content blocks for clear and logical movement of the eyes. For legibility, the Ground Floor Plan of the project “Final Year Project” will be supplemented with an additional A3 printout which can be found in the white envelope titled “Supporting Documents”.

MORE ABOUT ME SOME THINGS I BELIEVE TO BE TRUE
SOME POINTS FROM MY PERSONAL MANIFESTO
As any young and open minded designer does, I have always gone through phases of experimentation and fascination by certain theories or approaches of architecture and in many cases, moved on for good. Some of my work in my portfolio will be no exception. I have gone through phases of extreme experimentation like the project “Nix” which explores the idea of a synthetic cyborgian interface. It goes without saying then that the work I have produced is not necessarily in par with what I believe - it is an ongoing exploration. Perhaps it would be important to try and pin down threads of continuity and similarities in my projects to try and give a more clear picture of what kind of designer I am. What follows is some of the most important points on what I have always believed to be true. Architecture is nothing but one of many ways of communication: Architecture and its formal response to programme, function and event should be dictated by what it is trying to communicate. In short what this means is that architecture of all ‘kinds’ i.e. modernism to deconstructivism can and should be relevant if the narrative allows it to.
There is no set methodology fit for all sites. This could be attributed to Renzo Piano being my most inspirational architect. He has an anti-signature and coherence philosophy - he takes pride in most people not being able to recognize his buildings. Context and Critical Regionalism: Architecture should manifest itself within the historic, economic and social context. Too often architecture is created by ignoring its context, creating the homogenous and cultureless environment of today’s modern world. A victim of globalization and standardization of materials and ideas, the world is becoming one global village. Exchange of ideas and culture is a virtue, but what is important is that architecture of today should bring the standardization and homogeneity of today and the culturally rich and place specific architecture of the historic together. Derived from the work of Kenneth Frampton, it is important that architecture moves forward, but it has to be a contemporary interpretation of the historic as to keep the diversity of the world alive and build upon meaningful spaces specific to the context and not just a universal or imposed idea.

PEOPLE I LOOK UP TO
Universal Psychology: Good architecture I believe is built upon the understanding of common and universal truths of the psychology of how we perceive spaces. It is the basis and I believe a non-debatable foundation of good spaces. It goes without saying that I have a great appreciation for the theories of Christopher Alexander. Shaping the Public Realm and Humanizing the Megascale: One of the most important goals in architecture is to create meaningful, vital and inclusive social spaces. As architects, we are responsible for shaping not only a project’s programme, but also its larger civic role of enabling and enriching the community. Continuity of programme and concept: As architects, we are responsible for designing buildings that address human needs and aspirations. For example - a school, above all else, must be a wonderful place for learning. Every element of each design must be an expression of the life intended in a building. Image on the right: Martin Scorsese directing a movie. Image credits: http://whatculture.com/
Architecture as an intersection: Perhaps more commentary on some tertiary institutions, it should be understood that the role of the architect is wide and ever changing. I have a great interest in architecture of the film industry and of online environments.

MORE ABOUT ME DESIGN PROCESS
SYSTEMATIC DESIGN PROCESS
I am a big believer of a systematic, divisionary and hierarchical design process. The design process is choosing the best solution out of several divisions of design solutions. The design options out of each division all have a common thread relating to a singular system. For example, the system can be a concept, and the divisions can be phases of the design process or elements in a building like a roof or wall. All the options would thus relate to the concept (system) and the best one fit for the problem will be chosen. I believe that my best work has been produced by means of this process of thinking. Each project has had its own unique design process but towards the end of my undergraduate and proffesional work, I have intentionally worked on this way of thinking. It enables one to distance oneself from design decisions and proposals and react quickly to changes.

SOME OF MY WORKS 2012 MURRAY AND ROBERTS DES BAKER | 1ST PLACE WINNER
2012/06/01 | 20 YEARS OF AGE THIRD YEAR DESIGN
Role in Project: Conceptualization, General Management of 3D Modeling, Final Composition of Graphics, Model building, After Effects Movie Editing.
Des Baker is South Africa’s most prestigious competition for undergraduate students of architecture. The brief of 2012 entailed exploring architecture driven by a narrative and the exploration of industry expanding its horizons into other fields. Myself and my partner, Christopher MacClements, decided to explore architecture in the realm of film as it touched on both the idea of a narrative and alternative means of practicing architecture. We explored the theme of “Memory as the architect” - Architecture that can act as a trigger to unlock suppressed memory as a means of recreating space and experiences from the past. Psychosis Theatric serves to convey the relationship between physical (trigger) and mental (memory) spatial construction, and how these can inform to create a virtual space as palpable as real space.
Psychosis Theatric utilizes the metaphors of capitalism as a means to illustrate the lack of public interface in our contemporary South African society. The ‘secret killing machine’ housed within the cooling tower represents the economic struggle between two competing economic entities vying for the control of the power supply market in Pretoria. Their struggle indicates a breakdown in human interaction and modern affinities and desire to connect beyond their own personal interests.

PSYCHOSIS THEATRIC PAGE SNIPPETS
The images convey the cooling tower of Pretoria West power station being virtually reconstructed by the protagonist’s memory of past experiences. The string of images leading to the tower are the memories themselves. The industrial like mechanism that can be seen inside the cooling tower is the ‘secret killing machine’ - a machine designed as part of the narrative to symbolize the -
cut throat business of capitalism. The project intentionally ignored the design of a public space to signify the real lack thereof in South Africa.

This project argues that when activated, these triggers can recreate surpressed memory as real as actual space - without any concrete representations of the intended space.

SOME OF MY WORKS NIX | CYBORGIAN INTERFACE
2012/06/01 | 20 YEARS OF AGE THIRD YEAR DESIGN
Role in Project: Sole owner of the project.
In a world where individuals are becoming more and more disconnected from one another - what does this hold for the future of human interaction and social spaces? This project serves as an experimental project to explore the idea of a cyborgian interface a the extension of the human body. This is no science fiction - with the exponential growth of computer processing power and the advancement in the understanding of the cerebral cortex of the human brain, one day soon humans would be able to be connected to a computer to simulate reality. We would be able to live any fantasy, dream or release ourselves from any hardship or pain. The most extreme case of this concept would be the total removal of the cerebral cortex of the brain to cut out any influences from the real world - the humans would feel nothing, hear nothing, see and taste nothing. Their bodies would thus be rendered useless expect to run the brain and interaction with the computers.
This project responds exactly to that idea - a flesh “capsule like structure in which the bodies could be kept alive while the inhabitants live their wildest dreams. The project was mostly inspired by the work of Marcos Cruz and Marjan Coletti. The second part of the project that entailed designing a cyborgian flotation device was inspired by the scientist Steve Pike - part two would though not be discussed.

From the snapshots above, one can notice the human bodies contained within the capsules, floating in a liquid to remove any pressure from the skin. Furthermore, one can see a tentacle extending to the structure - this is a concept to explore the idea of these capsules being supported by central docking stations.

SOME OF MY WORKS CHIMERA | THE CONDUCTOR OF EVENTS
2012/02/01 | 20 YEARS OF AGE THIRD YEAR DESIGN
Role in Project: Sole owner of the project.
Chimera explores the notion of timed events and suggestive spaces within architecture. It is derived from the theory that event creates architecture i.e. architecture is secondary to event, and that event can only happen with the precise accumulation and activation of smaller events or natural inputs. This comes from a personal aim in the design of space that a space is only alive if it supports the life and events interacting with it - for example the rust on the steel or the growth of moss in the mortar in between tiles. The program of the design is that of a fencing pavilion for the Olympic games and a structure which supports the life of birds. The concept translates this into a built structure which could only be understood to support the programme, if you know that it actually does. The structure is completely suggestive i.e. there are no set functions for the spaces, as all of the spaces are dual functional and adaptable.
For example, on the floor plan (right), one can notice the large central space which is central to the line of sights and staircases leading towards it. In normal use, this would cold be used as a water body and steps to sit on and circulate around it - a space which supports a tranquil environment for birds and humans alike. In the rare occasion of the Olympic games or a sport event, the water body can be pumped out and it can be used as a stage for a performance with the steps used as seats.

SOME OF MY WORKS CRIMES OF PASSION | FINAL GRADUATION PROJECT
2012/06/01 | 20 YEARS OF AGE THIRD YEAR DESIGN
Role in Project: Sole owner of the project.
The brief of this project was to design a structure bigger than 2000m2, fit into an urban framework and respond to a specific theme - of which mine was “crimes of passion. The programme entailed a public library and a prison for convicted murderers in their last year of sentencing. The concept was developed to challenge the idea of open and closed, outside and inside, simplistic and complex and the public versus inmates. Through vast precedent studies the concept was further developed by interpreting the work of Thom Mayne and Morphosis Architects. The firm has done some experiments with the idea of a simple mass intersected with some complexity - for example the Perot Museum which is a simple cube with incisions made by almost over-designed lift shafts and escalators. The projects focus was directed towards an experimentation of such, and how this could be translated to convey the concept and programme.
The struture can be understood by a simple mass, the support functions and structure of the building, intersected by the more complex public library and prison. This relationship and contrast creates intentional interaction between the public and prisoners.

SOME OF MY WORKS CAESARSTONE AND KOPANONG | SOME ADDITIONAL SECOND YEAR
2011/02/01 | 19 YEARS OF AGE SECOND YEAR DESIGN
Role in Project: Sole owner of projects.
The following two projects were both done in my second year of studies. The first one (this page and the next) is an entry to the Caesarstone Student Design Competition - of which I was the youngest finalist in South Africa by a year. The project entailed designing a retreat for two artists and using Caesarstone products. The brief was translated into a concept of a moving and destructible structure in which artists break down the structure while moving through the Karoo desert - as they make sculptures from the structure, they place it on the landscape and move on - telling stories of the Great Karoo for passing motorists.
The second project, called Kopanong Studio and Gallery (page 48-49) was a competition in our faculty for second year students. The brief entailed designing a studio for artists in the park of the existing Pretoria Art Museum. The brief was interpreted into an Urban Transition which supported an already successful park though which people commute daily to work and back.

SOME OF MY WORKS EXPERIMENTAL ANIMATION AND ENVIRONMENT SIMULATIONS
2013 | 21 YEARS OF AGE YEAR OUT
Role in Project: Sole owner of project.
Coming from my big interest in film and the intersection thereof with architecture - I experiment a lot with 3D Animation and Special Effects. Animation gives real life physics and interaction to designs ranging from purely evocative to realistic and built projects. This specific project was an experiment into real life physics in a gravity-less environment with the input of strong turbulence.

YEAR OUT PROFFESIONAL WORK AT BOOGERTMAN + PARTNERS 2013
2013/01/10 | 21 YEARS OF AGE PROFFESIONAL WORK
Role in Projects: The first project (next page) was an office block design I designed myself under the mentorship of Dewar van Antwerpen for a private client. The project is currently in construction. The projects which follows are all designed by myself within a framework, (for example I designed the interior of a mall) all under the mentorship of Dewar van Antwerpen. The project on the second page which follows (top right), is a snapshot of the shopping mall I designed from a Master Plan which was developed by Leon Witbooi (under the mentorship of Dewar van Antwerpen). For all of the projects I did the renderings of the displayed images myself. Unfortunelty I am not allowed to show too much of the projects - for a few projects I can show some small snapshots and cropped plans.

YEAR OUT TRAVELS THROUGH EUROPE
2013/08/05 | 21 YEARS OF AGE YEAR OUT TRAVELLING
Role in Project: Sole owner of photograph.
From the fifth of August 2013 I traveled Europe for a few months. I did a basic anti-clockwise loop through some of the more popular European countries. My sequence of traveling was as follows: Paris, Annecy, Landry, Agay, Cannes, Antibes, Nice, Monaco, Eze, Milan, Florence, Rome, Zurich, Munich, Prague, Wroclaw, Berlin, Amsterdam, Paris. Through my travels I was more interested in the culture and the everyday life of the people living in the cities - I intended to experience a life of someone living in a first world country. I spent a considerable time in Museums and visited some of the most famous buildings in Europe. Furthermore I visited quite a few film festivals, including Annecy, Milan, Zurich and Berlin. Through making contact with some students of Universities, I was also able to visit a few Universities in Europe - of which my favorite was ETH Zurich.
The photograph which follows are not intended to be ‘photographic’ or artistic. They were mostly taken with my iPhone and were in the spur of the moment and informal. I prefer to write a diary every day and rather live the experience. Feel free to explore my Flickr feed: www.flickr.com/johann-wiese
