MEDALLIA

This large scale project contained a multitude of spaces, including office space, lobby, library, bar, fitness center, cafe, and courtyard. As the headquarters of a quickly growing company, the aim was to build a workspace that would reflect its global diversity and increasing scale. To achieve this objective, the design of the workspace was approached as if it were a city. Each floor represents a different continent, with spaces further broken out by country and city.

With a very tight budget, the goal of this project was to delineate spaces through groupings of floating rooms. The negative spaces created by these groupings created natural open areas ideal for breakout and collaboration. Through this method, “rooms” were created without the need to build extra walls.

Each room that was built was one of a catalog of predefined, prefab boxes. With five different types (phone rooms, huddle/offices, medium and large conference rooms, and booths), a variety of configurations was possible that allowed the most efficent and interesting use of space possible. I was involved in all aspects of this project, working from design through construction administration. Much of my time was spent designing and detailing the prefabricated plywood boxes as well as putting together the construction documents for this complex, eight story project.

Common Grounds is a new coworking concept that is aiming to create an elevated workplace experience supported by a vibrant culture of collaboration, community, and new opportunities. Each location is centered around a cafe open to the pubic showcasing gourmet Italian coffee as well as freshly made food prepared by a personal chef. Common Grounds aims to blur the lines between public and private and create a community space where all are welcome. Rapt has worked with Common Grounds to create space standards as they begin a large push to open up multiple locations across the country as well as designing the first six of their spaces. Each new location will follow one of three palettes in order to maintain a consistent ethos across all spaces. The first space completed was the San Jose location which employs

the “light and airy” pallette aimed to create a warm an d inviting place to work and play. Other locations include Salt Lake City, Burbank, La Brea, and Portland--each of which takes the context and community into account to create personalized experiences fit to each location. As the company continues to expand across the country, the standards we have created for these spaces will create a roadmap to create individualized experiences fit for each unique client. While working at Rapt, I led these projects from schematic design through construction administration, ensuring that the Common Grounds brand was maintained at all locations.

This office space refelcts the city it helps shape, San Francisco. Taking two upper floors in the heart of the Financial District, attention was paid to preserving the views and light present in the space. Two of the most distinctive features of the space are its reception area and the new stair created to connect the two levels. Visitors are greeted by a dynamic wall with backlit perforated metal. The lights are programed to gently dim and move, echoing the lights of the city as the fog rolls in. Directly adjacent to this wall is the new connecting staircase, painted to match the Golden Gate Bridge. I was involved in all phases of this project - from programming through construction administration. This project allowed me to work on all aspects of design

as well as taking the lead on coordination between our subcontractors and artists. Both the rope work of the stair and the specialty lighting display behind the reception desk took an immense amount of planning and coordination with a very short timeline. Each of these pieces were integral to creating the office JLL was looking for that reflected not only the values of their company, but also the city they are helping transform.

Conceived of as a working lab for LinkedIn’s Global Real Estate Team, this project put a focus on flexibility, adaptability, and functionality. The walls are lined with a system of slatboars, white boards, fabric boards, and peg boards that hang on z-clips. This system is designed for the office to easily interact with the panels, adding to them and using them as temporary signage. As new ideas are created, the team can easily replace the contents of the panels, rearrage them, or even take them off the wall. As a member of the team working on this project, I was responsible for helping finilaze the design, assist in details, and put together the construction documents.

Guests are immediately surrounded by installations showcasing the future of Envision

ENVISION

Envision is a forward thinking energy company focusing not only on wind and solar energy, but on the tools to help customers harness this energy. With this in mind, we were tasked with creating an office that acted as both home base for employees and as a showcase for the potential Envision sees for the future. As guests enter, there are several installations that allow them to learn about Envision and the work they are doing. The central installation is a dynamic topography map which can be programmed to replicate the topgraphy with a projection applied to show the potential sites of windfarms. I have been involved heavily in the design of this project and am currently working with the local team in China to make this porject a reality.

well as a full recording suite, editing suites, classrooms, full wood and metal shop, and innovation labs. e project also includes a new plaza across the street that will transform the civic center into a true community hub. As a member of this project team, I have been involved from programming through design development.

technically rigid spaces withing the building, the massing naturally gravitated towards an articulated box. With this in mind, we focused on creating a sense of movement and animation across the large facade by using custom terra cotta ribbed panels interrupted by a regualr series of slot windows. As the sun moves around the building throughout the day, the shadows play o of the irregualr ribs to create a dynamic experience. is is expanded upon at night when the terra cotta is illuminated by LED lights at each window.

CONCRETE FUTURES Packard Plant, Detroit, MI

TAUBMAN COLLEGE | Thesis 2016

| Packard Plant/Detroit

Concrete waffle slab systems came of age during the 20th Century, when innovation was driven by the desire for industrialized efficiency and regularity. This new system outperformed older, comparable structures through its use of a network of orthogonal ribs, which efficiently rationalized the labor involved in casting, amount of material used, and overall performance of the slab. Though these advances are still used to this day, a reinterpretation of the latent spatial possibilities of the traditional system will allow for an exploration into new possibilities and iterations of the waffle slab. By pushing back on the normative logic and strict regularity of an orthogonal column grid, our project aims to develop a variegated waffle slab structural system with corresponding spatial effects.

Traditionally, waffle slabs are produced by setting identical void forms on an orthogonal grid, then casting the negative in concrete. This system relies on consistency and replication in order to ensure proper casting. However, advancements in digital fabrication technology now allow for freedom from identical replication, which was not economically feasible due to labor costs. Robotic hot-wire cutting fabricates unique and varied void forms for casting rapidly and accurately, which enables a higher level of complexity and variability in the design of the finished built space. This technique offers the possibility of the formwork to have variable rib depth, thickness, and complex geometries. Kidder
