Program Note:
PASTELS WATCH THE SEA was written for the JCA Composer’s
Orchestra Haiti Benefit concert, which helped to fund a group’s service trip to Haiti. As I researched in preparation for this piece, the one image that stuck with me was the pastel painted houses on a hill, which was done after the hurricane to create jobs and lighten the atmosphere. These awful disasters are a part of Haiti’s history now, but they are moving forward, and this is the tone I tried to capture within the work.
