John Antoine Labadie Solid Geometry version 10 June 2018 - May 2023

Introduction

During undergraduate work (BA, 1973) I trained first as a sculptor, and then as a painter. I graduated with a degree in painting. When other opportunities became available my creative work expanded into photography, graphic design, and scientific illustration – then computing. Except for my initial work in sculpture, almost all works produced were in flat, two-dimensional forms that required only the considerations of the length and width of the product.

For the past 30+ years I have been working almost exclusively with digital tools which have allowed me to work in various 2D formats where a primary consideration for each work was length and width of each piece. During this time I have evolved a creative portfolio of literally thousands of digital images. But, up until the past 4 years or so, only a very few of these works have been 3D forms. Even so, I have always been interested in investigating different ways of working in 3D space where the consideration of depth was added into the creative equation.

The images contained in this portfolio are part of my Solid Geometry series which encompasses more than 500 works to date. These experimental images are my initial investigations into this way of working. Each image produced in this series is unique. All works were accomplished between June 2018 and May 2023.

My primary visual influence in developing these works is the French Surrealist artist Yves Tanguy whose mysterious paintings I have admired for many years. I know that there is much more to be discovered in working with these types of image forms. My investigations continue ….
