“Our Guests Included President Kalam & Oracle Corporation” The mood is upbeat at Adi Shankara Institute of Engineering & Technology, after President Kalam’s interaction with students, and the college becoming perhaps the only campus in Kerala from which international software major Oracle has recruited, says Dr. BS Krishnan.

What more gratification and honour could a professional engineering college have, than the visit of one of the greatest scientists of the nation His Excellency, the President, Dr. Abdul Kalam during his recent visit to Kerala. “It will be a memorable day in the annals of our history,” says Dr. B.S Krishnan, managing trustee, Adi Shankara Institute of Engineering and Technology. “Dr. Kalam’s visit is a feather in our cap, the students are delighted because for them it was an opportunity

of a lifetime to interact directly with such an intellectual stalwart. All throughout the stress has been on gaining professional excellence and this has given us the necessary thrust and lead in the highly competitive field of engineering education. It is this commitment by a dedicated team of teachers and management that has taken the institution to a series of accolades and recognitions. We are the first of the

new generation engineering colleges to be accredited with ISO 9001: 2000 certification. This was given for the quality system of technical education imparted. Dr. B.S. Krishnan, a successful senior barrister, with a doctorate in philosophy further stressed that the loftier vision was to transform the institution into a centre of excellence at par with international standards. The Adi Shankara Group of Institutions, founded, established and managed by the Sringeri Mutt has an impeccable record of running the Sree Sankara College and Sree Sarada Vidyalaya at Kalady. The group has for the past five decades pioneered in catering to the needs of the growing demands of the aspirants of highly specialised science and technology fields. They strive to mould competent professionals with ingenuity, adaptability, social commitment and ethical values. It is this experience that has contributed to the fast development of the Adi Shankara Institute of Engineering and Technology that is quite visible in it’s functioning. The college carries an image of progress and a long-term vision of

international stature. Affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, and approved by the AICTE, the courses offered are Electrical & Electronics engineering; Electronics and Communication engineering; Computer Science and Engineering; Information Technology; and Applied Electronics & Instrumentation. An MBA is also being offered as this equips and enhances the professional capability of the students. The vision of the college is to provide a good learning environment for the students to transform themselves into technology qualified, socially committed and spiritually awakened Indian nationals. Facilities at the college are in line with its lofty vision of progress and growth. The labs are well equipped with the latest equipment for all the streams of engineering. The airconditioned library is spacious and has a lavish collection of books and periodicals. There are over 16000 books in 5000 titles and a whole range of prominent journals. The computer lab with 300 networked computers and provides twentyfour hour internet usage facility.

ADI SHANKARA

The dynamic growth of any professional college depends a lot on the kind of industry interface. It has to keep itself abreast of the current developments at the technological level. Further, it is beneficial if such institutions can have their own R&D unit. Adi Shankara has a combination of both and perhaps this could be the reason for the high ratio of campus absorption by the corporate leaders Oracle India Ltd., Infosys Technologies Ltd., BirlaSoft, Wipro Technologies and Blue Star Info Tech. Adi Shankara is perhaps the only engineering college in Kerala, from which Oracle has recruited. Apart from corporate houses, the Indian Navy and Army have shown interest in recruiting. The objective of the R&D Centre is to acquire and assimilate the advancement of technology in the area of Business Intelligence and Advanced Computing. This centre work in close association with Bangalore-based companies like Blue Star Info Tech Ltd. and Bigants. In order to promote the deserving students to pursue their dream of

a successful career in the field of engineering, the institution offers scholarships. In order to implement a wholesome education in the campus, the management encourages various co-curricular activities where participation of the teachers has been equally enthusiastic. The various clubs at the campus are the Nature Club, Literary Club, Quiz & Debate Club and the Art Club. In order to hone up the communication skills in English, the students are given training in practising the various forms of delivery of English language. A Mind Power Development Programme is also offered from time to time in order to strengthen the students’ minds to face the competitive world outside the campus. The college further plans to conduct a series of lectures on the philosophy of the great Jagad Guru Sree Adi Shankaracharya, in order to inculcate a holistic value system in the students. The institution thus treads from one glory to another to achieve the best and also be competent at the international level.

FISAT “We are Right on Target” What is Chairman PV Mathew speaking about, when he says Federal Institute of Science & Technology (FISAT) “is right on target?” Is it leadership in admissions among engineering colleges in Ernakulam & neighbouring districts, or is it about majority of their first batch students getting booked by companies?

“There is an unhealthy competition among self-financing engineering colleges now,” says PV Mathew, Chairman of FISAT. “Otherwise, why are some neighbouring colleges making absurd comparisons about placements? We are 1 year younger than these colleges, and our first batch of students just now only got ripe for placements. And you see the outcome.” The outcome is indeed impressive. 49 of FISAT Semester7 students already placed at leading MNC blue-chips, as

of August 28th. And the corporate visits & offers are flowing. Sasken, i-flex, Huawei, Satyam, L&T Info Tech, iGATE, …the list is growing. At this year’s admissions too, FISAT put up a stunning performance, surprising many neighbouring colleges. Within days after the start of admissions, 99% of the merit quota was over. And filling the management quota has never been a problem at FISAT.

FISAT

Ask Mathew about FISAT’s success secrets, and he has a real secret to tell, “We know the middleclass pulse, and we are perhaps the most cost-effective self-financing engineering college with all the facilities. We don’t want to make a profit from this to take home. Everything is reasonable, and the revenue reinvested. Parents appreciate this.” A keen watcher of the self-financing scheme, Mathew explodes when asked about the leftist student stir, that was going on when we met him, “Do they realize what

they are speaking about? They say they are arguing for the downtrodden students, but in reality they are arguing for the upper-class students because it is they who benefit. Even a brief look at the engineering & medical entrance rank list would confirm this – rich students dominate from the top ranks onwards. And ironically, they get the subsidized education from Government, while middleclass and lowerclass students are left out with no option but the costlier self-financing education. Merit can be one criterion, but to make it the only criterion is socially unjust in a

FISAT a well-balanced collection that includes Books, Periodicals, CDROMs etc. Facilities in the library includes Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC), Leased Line Internet facility, Smart Card based transactions etc. A web-based e-learning platform, TenAcado, is operational at FISAT. This software is a totally web-based e-learning platform that includes a broad range of course developments, deployments and management capabilities along with a digital library and effective communication and collaborative tools. A language lab to teach foreign languages, especially English, has been established. FISAT has all its activities fully computerized. Separate software modules for Academics, Library, Administration, Accounts, and Store etc are installed and are all integrated to a single database. Another intranet module is also operational which will enable students & parents to access the details regarding academics, fee payment status, library etc from anywhere in the world. Sports and games facilities have been provided for all major sports and games items, including gymnasium, indoor shuttle court, table tennis etc.

PV Mathew, Chairman, FISAT

Professor, HOD, & Principal at Government Model Engineering College and NSS College of Engineering. His expertise in Electronics, Communication, & Electrical Engineering fields is working wonders in this age when graduates in these disciplines, rule the roost. In this age of active religiousness in Kerala’s educational sector, FISAT comes across as a fresh relief. Says PV Mathew, “Look around, and you will only see colleges with some religious affiliation or the other. In contrast, our secular credentials have been considered as a big plus by discerning parents.” Right from its architecture to its computerization, FISAT is one of Kerala’s best-designed engineering colleges. The campus, the buildings, the workshops, the laboratories, and the library are all best-in-its-class. FISAT Library & Information Division is full-fledged, having

FISAT, set up at Mookannoor, near Angamaly, in Ernakulam District, is affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University. FISAT offers courses in Electronics and Communication Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, and Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering. The FISAT campus, with its scenic beauty and virgin surroundings has electric power generators installed to make the campus self-sufficient in electricity.

MES College of Engineering

“We Stay One Step Ahead, Always” By the time the new wave of self-financing engineering colleges hit Kerala a few years back, MES College of Engineering was in top gear. With the new generation colleges doing some catching up, MES is again shifting gears – to overdrive, with the distinction of being the first and the only self-financing college in Kerala to get an MTech course, and by remaining the only private self-financing college in the state to get selected under Indian Government’s TEQIP Program for growing into a world-class Centre of Excellence. If Prof. POJ Lebba and Prof. KK George hear how the promoters of Kerala’s new-generation engineering colleges excitedly describe their infrastructure, they might smile silently. Because daily they direct the operations at a self-financing engineering college campus, the infrastructure of which is quite incomparable – 70 acres of river-side campus, 40,000 sq. mt. of built-up carpet area, separate full-fledged buildings for each department, & beautiful landscapes separating them – like only the world’s best educational institutions are built! If somebody objects that infrastructure is not everything, and what matters is the management & faculty, again MES is incomparable among the state’s self-financing engineering colleges – Chairman Jb. TP Imbichammad had been on the Board of Governors of IIT, Chennai, Secretary Prof. POJ Lebba was Dean of Engineering at University of Kerala, Director Dr. M Achuthan was on the faculty of IIT Mumbai, and Principal Prof. KK George had been the Director of Technical Education, Government of Kerala! And Prof. Lebba, Dr. Achuthan, & Prof. George, all studied at various IITs! If you already don’t know much detail about the promoting group,

Prof. POJ Lebba, Secretary

Jb.TP Imbichammad, Chairman

MES, you might be wondering by now what sort of a highly-professional organization it is – to have selected this eminent a team to head its engineering college. The Muslim Educational Society is a movement started in 1964 under the visionary leadership of late Dr. Abdul Gafoor, at Kozhikode. Today, it is the largest Muslim service organisation in the country with more than 7,000 members and spread across India and Middle East. Apart from schools and colleges, MES also runs a number of other institutions like hospitals, libraries, hostels, cultural centres and orphanages. MES College of Engineering is elegantly located at Thrikkanapuram, on the beautiful banks of Bharathapuzha, along the Kozhikode-Thrissur State Highway. The nearest railway station, Kuttipuram, is only 2 kms away, while the nearest airport, Karipur, is only 50 kms away. The history of MES College of Engineering is a history of firsts. The first private self-financing engineering college in Kerala. First engineering college in the state to get certified under ISO 9001:2000. First and the only private self-financing engineering college in the state to get selected under the TEQIP Program of Govt of India for creating Centres of Excellence. This year, MES added another first to its

credit – the first and the only self-financing engineering college in Kerala to get an MTech course sanctioned by AICTE. A postgraduate course in Thermal Systems (Mechanical Engineering) will be started this year. The success of any engineering college is ultimately measured by the level of interaction with the industry, and success in campus placements. MES has succeeded in both, with a high level of industry-academic interaction, and campus placement for the majority of passing-out students. The prime reason is again the expertise of the management in industry, consulting, & research. If you thought Chairman Jb. Imbichammad, Secretary Prof. Lebba, Director Dr. Achuthan, Principal Prof. George, & Vice-Principal Prof. PV Abdul Hameed are brilliant academicians alone – you are way off the mark! Jb. Imbichammad is a renowned technocrat-industrialist who has headed many public sector companies, and is presently Chairman of Sienna Group of Companies. Prof. Lebba was the President of Energy Conservation Society for several years, and Consultant to AICTE. Dr. Achuthan has been the Technical Consultant of many noted organizations, has

guided the doctoral research of many students at IIT Mumbai, and has published a number of papers in national & international journals. Prof. George, who is an eminent academician, professional, & administrator, has to his credit international projects, and being a member of the management committee of several institutions including IIT, Chennai. Vice-Principal Prof. Hameed is a member of the Board of Studies, Faculty of Engineering, & Selection Committee, at University of Calicut. The success of MES in Campus Placements is due to a concerted strategy of Soft Skill Development and Employability Enhancement Programmes for students. Value addition by way of short term courses in cuttingedge technologies needed for the industry, is provided. The College is noted for its extensive lab and library facilities. All departments have well equipped laboratories and workshops with modern equipments. The College has extensive Central as well as Departmentwise computer facilities, with broadband Internet facility, multiple operating systems, and an optical fibre backbone. Overall, there are 440 computers in the College. Apart from the separate

Department-wise libraries, the college has a Central Library on Engineering, Science & Technology, with 40,000 books, 135 journals, and over 2000 CDs on various topics. The library can accommodate more than 250 students at a time. For the convenience of the students, reference volumes and curricular books are stored in good numbers. The library also has a good stack of books on History and Literature. Media resource centres are equipped with videocassette recorders and CD players to enable the use of educational media on videotapes and CDs. A fully computerized information centre is also functioning in the library.

The college offers separate hostels for both boys (accommodating 550 students) and girls (for 440 students). The separate facilities include mess hall, prayer room, recreation hall, reading hall, computer room and playground facilities. A new state-of-the-art block for the ladies hostel with all amenities is coming up, the design of which has been done by Prof. George. Miscellaneous facilities for students include Canteen, Bank, Cooperative Store, Physical Education Department & Health Club / Gymnasium, Computer Education & Training Centre (MES-IIT) etc. Facilities for all sports and fine arts activities also exist at the college.

MES College of Engineering has a student strength of nearly 2100 and has the following courses: Applied Electronics & Instrumentation, Architecture, Computer Science & Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering, Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Information Technology, and, Mechanical Engineering. Additionally, there are three postgraduate programs – MTech Thermal Systems (Mechanical Engineering), Master of Computer Applications (MCA), and Master of Business Administration (MBA).

MES showed its social commitment by offering a Scholarship Scheme for meritorious students for 200506 admission. For candidates with rank up to 5000 in the Common Entrance Examination conducted by the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations, Government of Kerala, and who secure admission to BTech course in the MES College of Engineering, a scholarship equivalent to 75% of the fees fixed by the government for selffinancing colleges was offered.

Rajagiri School of Engineering & Technology (RASET)

“No Compromises in Infrastructure, Faculty, & Initiatives” Attaining leadership is one thing. Maintaining it, quite another. Rajagiri School of Engineering & Technology (RASET) is trying to do this difficult act by an uncompromising attitude on infrastructure, faculty, & initiatives, says Director Fr. Jose Alex CMI. And the mood at the Rajagiri Campus is buoyant than ever before with leadership in this year’s admissions, as well as placements - with 136 final year students bagging not 136 offers, but 182 offers for placement – almost all from India’s IT blue-chips!

Where to join? Infosys or Wipro? Accenture or Sasken? Hexaware or Sutherland? Such were the perplexing dilemmas faced by 42 final-year students of Rajagiri School of Engineering & Technology (RASET), after this year’s campus interviews. Because, all of them had dual offers; with three of them – Asha Elizabeth George, Anu Babu, & Sreelekshmi VH – even having triple offers! The remaining 94 final year students were also jubilant – without any dilemmas they could decide on their first employer – Allsec, L&T Infotech, iGATE, Birlasoft, Huawei, MindTree etc. apart from majors like Infosys, Wipro, Accenture, & Hewaware. But when we met Fr. Jose Alex this time – merit quota admissions were going on then - he had some surprises for us. We had expected jubilation at this year’s admission news which kept trickling in, but he was amazingly calm - “Admissions are just going on.” When we objected with the news of Rajagiri leading the merit quota among self-financing engineering colleges, his reply was “Nothing is yet official, isn’t it? We only have news from students who have opted for Rajagiri. We don’t believe in making any publicity or hype regarding these things.” When we probed further, we could also appreciate why he was keeping a balanced mind. It was the attitude of a leader who was relying more on his institution’s hard work, more than anything else. “People don’t realize. This kind of success doesn’t happen overnight. We have meticulously planned, invested heavily, & worked hard. You will be surprised to know that no engineering college in Kerala has our kind of labs for some subjects like electronics. How can

Rajagiri School of Engineering & Technology (RASET) such efforts be substituted by full-page ads in newspapers & other publicity stunts?” A Postgraduate in Social Work from Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai, Fr. Jose Alex has been instrumental in catapulting the CMI Congregation’s flagship Rajagiri Group into the centerstage of Kerala’s educational sector. His major contributions include the spinning off of Rajagiri School of Management and starting Rajagiri School of Engineering & Technology – both at the new 90-acres Rajagiri Valley Campus on the banks of River Chitrapuzha. During his tenure in the MG University Syndicate, he was a member of the Academic Committee, with significant contributions to his credit. Fr. Jose Alex in conversation with Seasonal Magazine on the uniqueness of the engineering college, which he heads: g Competition among self-financing engineering colleges is heating up. Many average performing colleges have become above-average performers. How do you plan to maintain leadership? Competition should improve. As far as Ernakulam & neighbouring districts are concerned, I think only a few self-financing engineering colleges are failing to live up to the minimum standards. But as far as Rajagiri is concerned, our set objective is to become

extraordinary, and not above-average. our aim from the very beginning has been to evolve into an Autonomous Institute and then move on to become a Deemed University offering Doctoral & Post-Doctoral Courses in Engineering & Management. Otherwise, what is the need for this kind of infrastructure, faculty, & initiatives? g How is the Rajagiri infrastructure different? Well, there are many things. I will tell you just one example. A lab, say for electronics or instrumentation, can be set up with 5 lakhs or 50 lakhs. The question is whether you want to meet mandatory requirements, or put up a sophisticated lab appreciated even by the industry. In such situations, we have always opted for the latter. Because of this, as I mentioned earlier, today we have some of the best labs among all engineering colleges in the state. g You mentioned faculty strengths. Can you elaborate? You will be surprised to know that our faculty consists of 12 PhD Scholars, 5 Senior Professors & around 30 Postgraduates – all with long years of experience in their respective fields. And, we have two very eminent scholars at the academic helm – Dr. K Babu Joseph as Dean, and Dr. AC Mathai as Principal. As you are aware, Dr. Babu was the former Vice-Chancellor of Cochin University of Science & Technology (CUSAT), and is a noted authority on various frontier fields of Physics. Dr. AC Mathai, who

Rajagiri School of Engineering & Technology (RASET)

took his MTech & PhD from IIT Chennai, did his Post-doctoral work as a Fulbright Senior Scholar in USA, and was later InCharge of UPSC recruitments to top scientific & technical posts, Associate Professor at BITS Pilani, & Dean at NIT (REC) Kozhikode, before joining as Principal here.

help. Prof. Varkey himself was experienced in this field, being the former Placement Co-ordinator at College of Engineering, Thiruvanathapuram. Similarly, one of the constructive roles our Dean Dr. Babu has been playing here, is aiding our students in Research.

g Apart from their goodwill & image, how does their experience help Rajagiri? Their experience counts a lot. For example, Dr. AC Mathai was the person who established and headed the Training & Placement Department at REC, Kozhikode. Later he was instrumental in setting up the path-breaking SHREDS. When we set up our Placement & Career Guidance Cell at RASET under the leadership of Prof. Varkey Philip, Dr. Mathai’s experiences did

g Research? At a private engineering college? Why not? Dr. Babu has to his credit more than 100 published research papers, and he has supervised the Doctoral works of 15 research students. Besides, we have 12 PhD holders among our faculty, in various disciplines. We

established a Research Centre in May 2003, under Dr. Babu’s guidance, to develop ideas, encourage creativity, and enhance knowledge among the teachers & students. The centre undertakes inter-disciplinary research projects as well as conducts workshops, conferences, seminars, refresher courses, & weekly lectures for the benefit of students & teachers. Current areas of interest & research include Complex Dynamics, Neural Networks, Genetic Algorithms, and lots more. g What are Rajagiri’s efforts in ensuring the holistic development of students? Before I elaborate them, let me point out that the very proof for these efforts is our students’ performance in campus placements. When companies recruit, they are not looking for just top academic performers, but wellrounded personalities with the right-mix of academics, communication skills, teamwork skills, leadership skills, body language etc. This is also one reason why Rajagiri ensures holistic development of all students. Training is given in areas like personality development, leadership skills, communication skills, debating, stress management, assertiveness training, relaxation techniques, yoga etc. Our Student Welfare Centre is responsible for all these activities, apart from student counselling, and maintaining an individual information folder for every student. With this kind of meticulous attention to detail, Fr. Jose Alex and his team is forging ahead with their sole intention of providing the very best for Rajagiri students.

The educational infrastructure available at Rajagiri is fullfledged & state-of-the-art. A Library System with a wellequipped & fully computerized Central Library and separate Departmental Libraries with Assignment Rooms exist. The Central Library has a massive collection of books, journals, periodicals, an excellent CD-ROM collection, and roundthe-clock Internet access. The Central Computing Facility offers a multiplatform network of Servers & Pentium-4 Workstations, 512 kbps broadband Internet connection, and high-speed multi-purpose laser printers & scanners. Additional facilities include a Reprographic Centre, Auditorium & Conference Rooms. Rajagiri cares for hostellers and day scholars equally well. The campus has separate hostels for boys & girls, with twinoccupancy facilities, & a full-fledged dining hall. Some of the teaching staff reside in the hostel as Resident Tutors to look after the well-being of students & provide them with necessary help. For day scholars, college buses ply to & from all directions including Ernakulam, Tripunithara, Aluva, & Kakkanad. Sports is promoted as a way of life at Rajagiri, with facilities including that for cricket, football, volleyball, basketball, & badminton. Facilities exist for indoor sports like table tennis too. But what is a modern campus without those little finishing touches – cafeteria, fitness centre, health clinic, post office, bank, & ATM? Ask Fr. Jose Alex about these, and he slowly ponders over each, before coming with the quick reply – “Everything, we have it all. No compromises.”

SAINTGITS “Our Management Team’s Strength, is Now Paying Off” That Saintgits was different, everyone agreed. But the real difference is emerging only now – the expertise of its promoters & management. Promoted, among others, by three noted educationalists, and managed by a governing board dominated by engineers and led by Er. Punnoose George, Saintgits College of Engineering shined in this year’s engineering admission by getting filled up quickly. Initially, most new self-financing engineering colleges looked the same. But, as the years rolled by, and the heat built up, many started developing cracks in their armour. Issues like investment & hype became secondary, while the real issue of adhering to the first principles of engineering education came to the forefront – the core issue being the expertise of the promoters & management in engineering & engineering education. And this is precisely the reason why Saintgits College of Engineering, at Kottukulam Hills, Pathamuttom, near Changanassery, has survived & emerged to the forefront in self-financing engineering education.

Saintgits is promoted by a group of educationalists, technocrats, industrialists, & respected ex-bureaucrats, and not mere businessmen out to make a quick buck from the education field. Noted educationalist His Grace Joseph Mor Gregorios MPhil, the Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Bishop of Cochin & UAE, is the President, while industrialist-educationalist KV George MA LLB, is the Vice-President. Bishop Joseph Mor Gregorios is noted for his educational endeavours spanning schools, colleges, & professional colleges – both in his personal capacity as well as in his capacity as Corporate Manager for all educational institutions belonging to the Jacobite Church. The

Chennai-based KV George is the Hon. Secretary of Madras Medical Mission & President of Union Christian Association (UCA), Chennai, which runs a School, Nursing School, & School of Physiotherapy & Paramedical Sciences – all at Chennai. An industrialist, he is also the Chairman of Kottukulam Engineers Pvt. Ltd., Chennai. The other noted educationalist on the Saintgits Board is Dr. PC Varghese BSc, BSc (Engg.), MS, ME (Harvard), PhD, who retired as Chief Technical Adviser of UNESCO & Prof. & HOD of Civil Engineering, IIT, Chennai. The Board also has a well-respected retired bureaucrat, Varghese Anver, BSc (Engg.), IRSE, who was the General Manager of Southern Railway. The Saintgits Management is also distinguished by a dominance of engineers – exactly how it should be for an engineering college. Led by CEO Er. Punoose George, BSc (Engg.), MIE, LLM, the team includes Er. Oomen Varghese as Treasurer, and Er. K George, Er. Varghese Philip, Er. Joseph Varghese & Er. Sinu Philip, as Members. Other members include Businessman John Punnen (Jt. Treasurer) and Agricultarist & Social Worker VP Varghese (Member). The academic side is led by Prof. Baby K Issac, BSc (Engg.), ME, who was noted in the education field during his days as a Prof. of Electrical Engineering, at MA College of Engineering, Kothamangalam. CEO Er. Punnose George, who was earlier the Director of Kottukulam Engineers Pvt. Ltd., in conversation with

Seasonal Magazine, about the engineering college which he now heads: g How fast was Saintgits filled up in this year’s admission? Not only this year, ever since our inception, we have been one of the engineering colleges most in demand. This year, despite the reduction in fees at government self-financing colleges too, the bulk of our merit quota was filled up quickly, barely a week after counselling started. g How was the response for management quota seats? We have never faced a problem in management quota, because we offer the kind of superior facilities that management & NRI quota students and their parents are looking for. Over the years, the emerging difference is that our management quota is virtually getting ‘filled up’ long before the entrance itself! g What are the reasons for Saintgits being in demand? Well, Saintgits has never compromised on how an engineering college should run, on the infrastructure, faculty, or future oriented support. g Can you tell us more about this future oriented support? Well, we believe that the role of an engineering college is to prepare students for two futures – industry or higher education. With this in mind, we had formed a Placement & Career Development Cell, headed by Dr. U Punnoose

SAINTGITS PhD, our Dean for Placement & Training. . Its duties are two-fold. The Cell liaisons with major Corporates, including the IT giants from India & abroad, to conduct Campus Recruitments, which have been a real success. Secondly, the Cell provides coaching for higher studies abroad like GRE, TOEFL etc. as well as domestic entrances like GATE, CAT, & GMAT. Many of our students have got excellent academic placements in India & abroad. Apart from all these support, we provide help for developing the communication skills. g Can you explain? We are one of the few colleges that have a resident resource person for developing English & Communication Skills. This initiative has had miraculous results, especially on the Campus Recruitment front, because usually it is on the communication front and not the academic front that Kerala students lag. g Do you have a scholarship scheme for attracting meritorious students? Yes, we were one of the first colleges to start a merit scholarship scheme. We disperse around Rs. 10 lakhs for this, and a unique feature is that the Saintgits Scholarship is available for meritorious candidates studying at any engineering college in Kerala. g What are the special infrastructure facilities at Saintgits? It starts from our campus, which spans 30-acres and is green & eco-friendly. All the buildings & class rooms are

spacious & well-ventilated. Apart from world-class library, labs, & workshops, we have a state-of-the-art IT infrastructure. Group learning tools like Video Lectures, as well as self-learning tools like Internet & Multimedia Subject CDs are provided. Saintgits offers courses in Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Applied Electronics & Instrumentation Engineering, as well as Master of Computer Applications (MCA). Caring for the wholesome development of its students, Saintgits has got hobby clubs, debate club, discussion groups, interactive counselling sessions, meditation centre, and yoga for students. Set up under the aegis of Saint Gregorios Institutes of Technology and Sciences, this top-performing engineering college also benefits from the expertise of former Principal Dr. Babu Rajendran, a PhD holder from IISc, Banglore, Thomas T John, Director (Administration & Planning), who was the Secretary to Minister of Education, Government of Kerala, and Rev. Fr. Mathew Koshy who works as Dean (Student Welfare).

SN GURUKULAM “We are at a Tremendous Pace Now” If there is one self-financing engineering college that has tremendously improved during the past 1-year, it is SN Gurukulam College of Engineering at Kadayiruppu. This year’s admissions proved it. SN entered the top league of Ernakulam colleges with blistering-fast completion of admissions to its almost-entire seats. TA Vijayan, President

“We were one of the first choices for students this year,” remarked TA Vijayan enthusiastically while we met him. The merit quota admissions were going on then, and SN had managed to get filled up to near completion in the first round itself. “During this past 1-year we had meticulously planned to upgrade on all fronts that needed upgradation, and the efforts paid off,” added Vijayan, President of the Sree Naryana Gurukulam College of Engineering (SNGCE). But, he is humble enough to quickly add that, “Of course, our location at Ernakulam also helped. More and more students & parents choose Ernakulam colleges because this is emerging as Kerala’s hub for IT, the field in which maximum jobs are happening.” SNGCE is located at Kadayiruppu on the Kolenchery - Perumbavoor route, comfortably away from the hustle and bustle of city. This picturesque campus of 40 acres is 4 kms north of Kolenchery and 14 Kms south of Perumbavoor. It was the Kunnathunadu SNDP Union, Perumbavoor, that established Sree Narayana Gurukulam College of Engineering. The aim of the founders is to accomplish the goals of freedom and fearlessness, through the right type of education suitable to the changing

needs of the world. In this prestigious venture, the Union is inspired and guided by the precepts and teachings of Sree Narayana Guru (1855-1928), the great sage and social reformer who brought about a revolutionary transformation in the socio-cultural scenario of Kerala, and whose yeoman services have been lauded and assimilated by the world community. The functioning of the institution is steered by the Sree Narayana Gurukulam Trust. The members of the trust hail from various professional fields, and they have a set objective of opening avenues to the youth, far and near, to a world-class higher education in engineering and technology, and in the allied disciplines. TA Vijayan is

to the youth, far and near, to a worldclass higher education in engineering and technology, and in the allied disciplines. TA Vijayan is the President of the Trust. Vijayan, a retired Deputy Commissioner (Commercial Taxes) is currently the Chairman of the Kerala State Backward Class Development Corporation. SN College offers BTech courses in Electronics & Communication Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Instrumentation & Control Engineering, and Civil Engineering. VISWAJYOTHI “With Success in Admissions & Placement, We Have Gathered Momentum” Manager Fr. Thomas Malekudy is satisfied about Viswajyothi’s performance this year – first-year admissions over in a week, and 80% students in 8th semester & 40% students in 7th semester already placed with leading companies. Nestled among lush green surroundings over a hillock beside the Ernakulam-Thodupuha state highway on a sprawling 26-acre compound is the impressive college building spread over an area of 2 lakh sq. ft. It was quite hard to believe that this institution was just set up in the year 2001. The institution looked quite academic and professional yet the setting was serene – the right ambience to embark on a professional engineering career. The motto of the institution “Widening frontiers of excellence in engineering education” seemed no misnomer.

Viswajyothi College of Engineering and Technology is yet another epitome of the Kothamangalam Diocese that radiates their commitment and experience in the field of education. The Diocese runs 90 schools, 3 affiliated colleges and 3 other technical institutions. For the last five decades they have been in the forefront of serving the society and the cause of education. The success story of Viswajyothi is due to the unflagging efforts of the Diocese. Viswajyothi has had a manifold growth and has earned a reputation amongst the academic community as well as the industry. A look into the kind of corporate organisations that have recruited professional aspirants from the institution, and the numbers, bears testimony to Viswajyothi’s excellence. Leading corporate like Infosys, Nest, Satyam, US Technology, Sasken, L&T Infotech, Assyst, TCS and IBS

Software, to name a few, have been recruiting from the college regularly. Fifty-five students gained direct campus recruitment for the year 2005-2006. Last year seventynine students were absorbed into leading corporate organisations. It is the definite vision of the management to mould the students into engineers par excellence with integrity, fairness and human values that lead to their achieving such an excellent track record. The institution further carries a lofty mission of developing into a centre of excellence and growing to match international standards. Accredited by AICTE and affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, Viswajyothi offers B.Tech degrees in Computer Science and Engineering; Electronics and Communications Engineering; Electronics Engineering; Information Technology and Mechanical Engineering. Each course has sixty seats. Admission is based on the results of the Common Entrance Exams conducted by the Government of Kerala and all the reservations are according to the policies of the government. As for the NRI quota, 15% of the management quota is set apart for this category. The Patron of the institution is Rt. Rev. Dr. George Punnakottil, Bishop of Kothamangalam, and the Manager is Msgr. Thomas Malekudy. Facilities available at the college are, by far, the best. All the laboratories are state-of-the-art, with standardised quality equipments that are in keeping with the needs of the industry. A heavy investment budget is earmarked to provide the most current equipments. Similarly the library is quite well decked with a vast range of textbooks, technical books, references, periodicals, technical magazines and International journals. The automated, spacious, elegantly designed library has a collection of

learning CDs and also books on literature, management and human resources. The hostels, one for boys and a separate one for girls are well kept, modern and the rooms have adequate privacy. One hundred and fifty boys and two hundred and twenty-five girls can be accommodated. Nuns manage the girls’ hostel. The mess is spacious, hygienic and elegant. Internet and computer facilities are available at the hostels itself. Members of the teaching staff are appointed as resident tutors. The Engineering Competency Centre offers comprehensive training to students in industry benchmark areas like Microsoft, SUSE Linux and Java. Apart from formal training in these, those who wish to work towards international certifications are also assisted. As a part of this centre an Applications Development Centre (ADC) is being set up where students can involve themselves in industry-specific R&D projects. The Placement, Training & Counselling Department offers career guidance and support for students in the areas of placements and further education. The training division imparts need-based professional, personal development and value added training programmes. In order to promote managerial and entrepreneurial skills among students an Entrepreneur Cell is being established.

FEDERAL INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY (FISAT) Running an Engineering College by a bank officers association! Those who don’t know about the Federal Bank may be surprised to hear about it. But the question is, will you find somebody in Kerala like that? One who is familiar with the Federal Bank and the Federal Bank Officers Association (FBOA) will see it as the continuation of a natural process that started 35 years back. Federal Bank, the most coveted brand name in Kerala’s banking sector signifies service and credibility in the mind of stakeholders. This image is nurtured and nourished by FBOA to make it a most customer friendly commercial bank. It was for this precise reason that an engineering college was conceived, established and managed by the 2000-strong Federal Bank Officers Association Educational Society (FBOAES) - an initiative of the FBOA. It has become the flavour of the season in the engineering education sector.

Governing Council of the college. FISAT being one of the best-designed engineering colleges in the state, plans to unleash the suppressed creative and entrepreneurial energies of the state. Its aim is to develop the institution as a Centre of Excellence in technical education, which, in turn will bring out technocrats with superior skill and social commitment. It is the earnest endeavour of the Institution to provide state-of-the-art facilities to mould brilliant young talents enabling them to take-up challenging assignments in the highly competitive global scenario. But in the Kerala context, FBOA wanted to prove a point by starting a secular venture in educational sector. “We want to rekindle the secular tradition in this field,” Mr. PV Mathew explains the vision in his mind. ‘Focus on Excellence’ is the Motto of FISAT.
