We are pleased to present this exhibition of paintings, works on paper, and sculptures by David Park, Richard Diebenkorn, Nathan Oliveira, and Manuel Neri – four artists whose work we have been privileged to exhibit many times over the past four decades. With the exception of David Park, who sadly passed away in 1960 at the age of 49, we have also enjoyed wonderful, personal, and collaborative relationships with each artist. Our current exhibition presents a select sample of figurative works and landscapes – and in some cases, figurative paintings that also include the environment in which the figure resides. Many works presented here, regardless of their often intimate scale, elaborate beautifully the tension these artists balanced between figuration and abstraction. The viewer can see their progressive exploration of what would enrich the history of Abstract Expressionism. About the Bay Area artists of the Post-War era, Caroline Jones, curator of Bay Area Figurative Art 1950-1965, says, “Their mature post-abstract figurative paintings preserved a sophisticated dialogue between abstraction and representation – the image oscillating between a recognizable subject and a boldly colored, abstract arrangement of thick slabs of paint.”1 Much has been written about the artists featured in this exhibition as well as the larger Bay Area figurative tradition. In light of the excellent scholarship available on this topic, we would like to refer our audience to the suggested reading list on page 5.

As has always been the case in presenting an exhibition of historic works from this era, we are deeply grateful to Phyllis Diebenkorn and Gretchen and Richard Grant for their generosity and support in enabling us to continue to share the works of Richard Diebenkorn with the public. We also collaborated with and are extremely thankful to Joseph Oliveira for his help in selecting and lending wonderful examples of his father’s works, both early and late. In addition to the help offered by these two families, we have benefited from the extraordinarily generous loans from several great collectors who are also treasured friends. Their trust in us is deeply appreciated. They have collected these works because of their beauty and they have shared them with the public because they value the important contribution these artists made to the fiber of the cultural life of the Bay Area.
