Flushed cheeks “An exaggerated blush is so hot right now. Think sun-kissed cheeks for a youthful, pretty glow.”

Fresh-faced beauty “Take your cue from Mother Nature and add subtle touches of on-trend earthy hues to your make-up palette.”

Kate Middleton “I have a feeling that summer’s ultra-luxe make-up is inspired by HRH’s polished approach to beauty.”

I’ve been warming myself up in anticipation of summer sunsets and warm weekends on the beach by keeping an eye on the Spring/Summer 2012 runway shows. There were bursts of colour everywhere: on eyelids, cheeks and – my personal favourite – on lips. And when it comes to summer skin, I’ll keep it fuss-free. I’ll keep wearing my sunscreen (no matter the weather), and I’m pedantic about making the time and effort to look after my skin which is, after all, this season’s ultimate accessory. Welcome to a beautiful summer.

Candy-coated fun “Don’t be intimidated by colour – bold, retro-chic shades are surprisingly wearable. Give it a go.”

– LAMEEZ HENDRICKS, CLUB BEAUTY EDITOR

THE LOOK “This look is surprisingly fresh, wearable and youthful,” says David John, local make-up artist for Yves Saint Laurent. DIY Brush highlighter onto the eyelid and under the eye for even coverage. Line the lower eyelid with dark blue eyeliner – this will look particularly great on brown or blue eyes. Blend a gold shade onto the upper lid and apply a darker bronze to the outer eyelid, sweeping it into the fold for a smoky effect. Create volume by finishing with a few coats of black mascara.

THE LOOK “This trend is perfect for women who want a fresh, chic look that highlights and contours their facial features,” says Namate Moyo of black|Up Paris. DIY Add radiance by beginning with a matifying primer followed by a compact powder foundation. With light strokes, apply a copper blush to enhance the hollow of the cheekbones and for extra definition, add an ultraluminous blush to the upper cheekbones. To complete the look, define your lip contour with a brown lip pencil followed by a slick of high-sheen lipstick in mocha.

THE LOOK “This classic look pays homage to the 1920s and suits all skin tones and ages,” says Michelle-Lee Collins, senior make-up artist for M·A·C. DIY After making sure that your lips are properly conditioned, dab M·A·C lipstick in Ruby Woo (a shade suited to all skin tones) onto the centre of pouted lips, using your finger to soften out the edges. With a blending brush, lightly apply a pearly eyeshadow around your lip to accentuate the cupid’s bow. For a glossy alternative, finish with a slick of M·A·C Lip Glass.

THE LOOK “This ‘no make-up’ look is all about flawless skin teamed with minimal colour,” says Gerhard Naude of Bobbi Brown. DIY A healthy lifestyle and good hydration is the key to this look. Prep skin with moisturiser and then apply a concealer or corrector where needed to lift and brighten your skin tone. Blend in a foundation that matches your skin tone from the nose outwards and apply powder to reduce shiny patches. Finish with a bronzer to add warmth and blush for a natural-looking glow.

THE LOOK “The pastel trend for summer is fresh and fun – a new take on an old favourite” says Rashaad Davids, regional make-up artist for Estée Lauder. DIY Add definition to your eyebrows by applying a light shade of eyeshadow to the entire upper eyelid and illuminator to the brow bone. Dab a slightly darker shade below the bottom lid and blend well. Smudge eye pencil from the outer corner of the eye to the base of the lash line, then add a dark shadow over the liner using a sponge tip or eyebud. Finish with mascara.

THE LOOK “The burgundy-stained lip was a hit at the Donna Karan and Prabal Gurung Spring/Summer 2012 shows,” says Andrew James, national make-up artist for Lancôme. DIY For a soft stain, apply lipstick by dabbing colour onto your lips with your ring finger and then rubbing the lips together. For a deeper stain, apply colour with a lip brush or directly from the tube. Blot your lips with a tissue and complete with a lip liner. Dust skin with a bronzer to warm up paler skin tones.

THE LOOK “For a look that has drama and mystery, the smoky rock-chick eye will stop them in their tracks,” says Revlon’s Hildegard Spieker. DIY Start by applying concealer to cover shadows or blemishes under the eye. Next, place your finger at the outer corner of your eye and gently lift the skin before adding black eyeliner to your upper lid, staying as close to the lashes as possible. Extend the line outwards. Apply eyeliner to the inner lower lids and smudge it with a cotton bud. Finish with lashings of mascara.

THE LOOK “A flushed cheek swept with pink or peach will never go out of fashion,” says Elizabeth Arden’s Gina Myers. DIY Apply a primer to your skin before blending in a foundation or tinted moisturiser with a foundation brush. Then, with your fingers, gently apply a cream blush to the apples of your cheeks. Blend properly, keeping in mind that less is more. Apply the same cheek colour to your lips for a naturally stained look that matches your cheeks. The result? Simple and sassy.

skin savers Warm weather brings fresh challenges for our skin. Here’s how to beat the summertime skin blues

Quench the skin’s thirst

Hot, dry weather and airconditioners can leach moisture from your skin, resulting in tightness, fine lines and flaking. 1 Look for a moisturiser that contains hyaluronic acid (which holds 1 000 times its weight in water) as well as natural ingredients, like glycerine, that absorb moisture from the air. 2 In addition to a daily moisturiser that targets dehydration, invest in an intensive moisturising serum to boost your skin’s rehydration process. 3 Give harsh skincare products – including deep pore cleansers, exfoliators, scrubs and anything containing alcohol – a miss for a while. 4 Unlike dry skin that lacks oil, dehydrated skin craves water so be sure to up your daily H2O intake, especially in summer.

no more sun damage

We all know the risks of sun exposure and while you can’t undo the damage already done, there’s lots you can do to minimise further damage. 1 The most effective way to prevent sun damage and skin cancer is to stay out of the sun, especially between 11am and 4pm. Don’t go outside without applying a broadspectrum sunscreen that contains both UVA and UVB protection – and always wear a hat. 2 Retinoids – a class of chemical compounds related to vitamin A – minimise the appearance of fine lines and age spots, while preventing new ones from forming. Choose moisturisers and serums that contain these miracle workers. 3 The safest tan is a fake tan. Opt for a selftanning cream or spray instead of the sun’s harsh, damaging rays when you need a bit of mood-boosting colour. 4 If you do get burnt, apply a product that contains a soothing ingredient such as aloe vera immediately– it will also accelerate the healing process. Antioxidant-rich moisturisers and body lotions are another important healing tool.

uneven skin tone

Skin tone is determined by melanin, the production of which is stimulated by skin cells called melanocytes. Hormones, medication, illness and too much sun can result in the over-production of these pigment-stimulating cells. Darker skins are more prone to pigmentation, especially if over-exposed to the sun. 1 Exfoliation is key for those with uneven skin tone as it removes dead skin cells that contribute to pigmentation. Exfoliants containing alpha hydroxy acids break down the bonds between dead cells and are less irritating than rough, granular scrubs. 2 Use a daily moisturiser packed with antioxidants like vitamin C and repair your skin at night with a smoothing, retinol-based night cream. Retinol (vitamin A) has been proven to help reduce excess pigmentation. 3 Apply a facial mask containing rose petal extract or vitamin A once a week. This will pump moisture into your skin and help fade uneven skin tone. 4 Always wear sunscreen and a hat when you head outdoors.

target breakouts We perspire more in summer, which can lead to problems as sweat tends to bond with dead skin cells, clogging pores and resulting in problem skin.

1 If you’re prone to breakouts, chances are you have oily skin. This skin type needs to be treated gently so opt for products that won’t strip it of oils – but won’t add any either. 2 Cleansing is vital: choose a cream or gentle foaming cleanser and use a warm face cloth to remove residue while gently exfoliating your skin and keeping blackheads at bay. 3 Treat spots with sticks, serums and gels that contain salicylic acid or retinol, which dry out spots and exfoliate the skin. Supplement your routine with twice-weekly masks and scrubs that contain these ingredients. If you have open pimples, don’t use a scrub as it’ll just make things worse. 4 Oily skin can be dehydrated too, so maintain your skin’s hydration levels with an oil-free moisturiser. 5 Many spot treatments contain ingredients that make the skin more vulnerable to sun damage so be sure to use a good sunscreen with a high SPF. 6 If your breakouts are severe, consult your doctor. Hormone-related acne can be treated quickly and effectively with the correct medication.
