I grew up in a family with four children – I was the eldest son, with two younger brothers and an older sister. Today, I’m father to two beautiful daughters: Felleng, three years old, and Joalane, two years old. The fondest memory I have of my father is driving for 12 hours in a Toyota Hilux on a dirt road through the snow to get to Qacha’s Nek in Lesotho. I was only five years old and it was a real adventure for me because the road barely existed – we drove inches away from 1 000m drops and dangling crevices on hairpin bends that only allowed one car to pass at a time. That road is tarred now and the journey takes half the time. My father was an advocate who became an ambassador and later an advisor (king’s councillor) to the monarchy of Lesotho.

He was hard-working and hated shortcuts, and was a very honest, precise and loyal man. He is used to cross-examining people with a smile. I decided to be an architect because I wanted to forge my own path and make him proud of me for finding my own professional identity. There are many wise things my father taught me: familiarity breeds contempt; don’t tempt innocent men into criminality (I once forgot my wallet on the car seat); pick the most beautiful woman you can find, and make sure she’s the smartest too; think before you speak; and fight for beautiful things. I love being a father. I cook for my daughters all the time and they’re always eager to help. We love flavourful food – they are carnivorous like me. I’d like to teach my daughters to build their brains and their character, to know that beauty is fleeting and to love deeply. If I could give them anything in the world, I’d choose a life free from pain and loss.
