What are the consequences of not training? Gaining new customers is always important, however retaining them is critical to the financial health of your business. As it costs you considerably less to retain a customer than it does to win a new one, providing ongoing training to your technicians so they stay up-to-date with the latest vehicle technology makes perfect business sense. After all, why give your customer the excuse to go elsewhere?

What is ATA? With the increasing complexity and sophistication of vehicles, there has never been a greater need for competent technicians. Launched in 2005, the ATA is a voluntary scheme that proves a technicians competence, giving reassurance to customers as well as raising the professional status and credibility of skilled individuals and their businesses. It is open to franchised and independent garage technicians and the scheme is backed by all major vehicle manufacturers and independent service and repair organisations, as well as consumer groups. What could it do for my business? ATA brings major benefits for consumers, technicians & employers including: • Consumer confidence in ATA registered technicians and the organisations employing them • Proof of current technical competence and professional responsibility • A benchmark for technician recruitment and training Public awareness of ATA is growing, as well as consumers understanding of the importance of seeking motor industry personnel with the ATA standard. The consumer campaign, ÔYou know you,re OK with ATA, has been broadcast to more than 30 million people in the UK. Thousands of people have already used the ATA website to find there nearest garage employing ATA staff. What qualifications would I achieve? ATA is based on National Occupational Standards to ensure that it meets the skills requirements of the retail motor industry. To achieve accreditation, a light vehicle technician must pass a series of practical skill and knowledge tests at one of three competency levels: • Service Maintenance Technician • Diagnostic Technician • Master Technician Accreditation is achieved following successful completion of a one day assessment which combines both practical tasks and an online test. Our courses are designed around the key subjects featured in the assessment. For more information or details of ATA, simply visit www.autoeducation.co.uk or call 0845 600 6048. To ensure that technicians keep abreast of innovations in technology, they are re-assessed every 5 years to maintain their accreditation. The Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) governs the Automotive Technician Accreditation and a special Code of Conduct binds all ATA registered technicians. You will receive a photo identity card and will also be included on a public register.
