LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT John Cannon

Welcome to our 3rd Edition of Live Well We are humbled and honored that our magazine, Live Well, has been so warmly received and we’re excited to present our third edition.

This issue of Live Well will introduce you to our newest models; offer insights

on the process of “How Your Idea Becomes your Ideal Home,” and tour “Homes We Love,” taking a look inside five John Cannon custom homes featuring interviews with the residents who have graciously opened their homes for this edition of Live Well.

You’ll also find an expanded list of “Distinct Differences” where you can

discover what sets John Cannon Homes apart from other home builders – the process, the products and, of course, the people who build our homes.

Being honored as Best Builder for 25 consecutive years in the Readers’ Choice

Awards, our Aurora Awards and the 31 Parade of Homes awards bestowed on us in 2017 is a true testament to the talents and uncompromising integrity of the John Cannon Homes team.

And, while the accolades and awards are greatly appreciated, it is your trust

in allowing us “into your family,” to turn your vision into the home of your dreams that means the most to us. Whether we are building your home in a community or on your lot, our commitment to YOU is always first and foremost. Thank you for making us your custom home builder of choice. Warmest regards,

John Cannon President and CEO

Hand-painted Spanish tile sets the theme from the exterior front façade to the intricately tiled foyer leading into the beautifully appointed great room. Deep wood tones, brick, metal and stone partner with splashes of jewel tones and touches of ebony; creating a vivid and bold interior color scheme. The great room, kitchen and dining room of The Akarra IV suggest a sophisticated, yet informal setting with the balanced blend of Spanish and contemporary details. The dramatic wood-stained, custom built coffered ceiling, brick accents, and stone fireplace in the great room add warmth to the contrasting and dramatic painted cabinetry found at the perimeter of the kitchen and Butler’s pantry. The Akarra’s kitchen, with its trio of painted and stained maple cabinetry is as functional as it is breathtaking. A copper farmhouse sink is surrounded by black pearl granite and the

and outdoor spaces together. Disappearing sliding glass doors maximize the flow of natural light between The Akarra IVs main living areas and an expansive outdoor living area that’s impossible to overlook. Surrounding the pool and spa

Located adjacent to the bonus room, the outdoor kitchen with its tile and stone wall, floating wood shelves and rustic light fixtures mimics various materials found at the home’s interior. With its

ample space for cooking, dining and casual conversation by the pool, the space evolves into more than a lanai; it is another living area unto itself. The master suite, with its sitting area and private entrance to the pool, is rich and luxurious with brilliant patterns of crimson and garnet complemented by taupe, sable

and rich black accents. The master bath is where the blending of contemporary spa-inspired design with Spanish-Colonial style throughout the home shines. The shower’s unique grid work resembling window panes adds a twist to a normally traditional look while the freestanding oval bathtub with its ball and claw feet is offset by the hand-painted tiles underfoot. Three additional attractively finished en-suite bedrooms offer guests and family spacious accommodation and privacy. Two separate areas in the home, the study, just off the great room offers a quite space “away from it all,” and the bonus room at the rear of the home connects you with the inviting outdoor living areas. A “must have” for the Norton’s was a wine cellar. “We love wine and building a custom home meant we finally had a proper place to store it.” The brick, barrel-shaped ceiling with a custom wine racking system, is complete with rolling ladder and features accent lighting around the ceiling perimeter. Our Vacation Home Became Our Dream Home

‘‘W

hen we first decided to build a home on Longboat Key, it was with the idea it would be a second home where we would eventually transition,” Karen said. “We just had no idea it would be so quickly.”

Karen and Bashar are relocating from Barrington, Illinois, empty-nesters with three grown children – two out on their own and a junior in college. Having spent years traveling internationally for business and pleasure, they decided to build a second home as a vacation destination. They discovered Longboat Key through a family friend they’ve known for 18 years, who already had a home on the Key. “In fact, it is just down the street.” “We loved their home, which John Cannon had also built, and they felt they had a great experience, so John Cannon came highly recommended. Our friends said it was a smooth process, too, and that helped with our decision.” Though Karen said she and Bashar had remodeled their current home “from top to bottom,” this was their first truly custom-built one. Situated on the bayside of Longboat Key, the home features an exterior Spanish Mediterranean architectural elevation and at 4,117 SF, this 5 bedroom, 5 ½ bath custom design features a great room, kitchen, dining room, study, and upper level game room with access to an outdoor lanai overlooking the water. “For the interior, what Cannon and his team did was great; They took

elements from different models and layouts of homes they have built or designed and melded them together. It was a really good process and they were able to translate all the ideas into a layout and floorplan we really love.” A customized, arched double iron door welcomes you into the foyer where you marvel at the exquisite detail found in the coffered ceiling of the great room. The paintings at the entry and over the fireplace were painted by Longboat Key artist, Michael Tendall, a favorite of Karen’s. As your eyes take in the views afforded by the sliding wall of glass doors, you notice the sense of sophistication in the great room that opens to the kitchen and dining area. At the entrance, Karen selected a Grey Stone Lappato that interlaces with Marvel Decors Moon Onyx Lappato flooring, bordered by a Grey Moon Greca Mosaic and the effect is striking. Karen was so captivated with the tile selections offered by Atlas Concorde Decors, she chose to use varying colors and finishes of their tile throughout. The home features current trends in color and décor; the result is rooms that feature refined finishes surrounded by varying shades of grey, violet and periwinkle. In addition to working with John Cannon’s design professionals, Karen brought in “Best of Houzz” award-winner Micheline Laberge, ASID, who has been a Sarasota-area designer since 1981. “We used grays and whites for interior spaces allowing for the bold colors and beautiful prints in fabrics, which are featured in all the bedrooms and throughout the home.” With the plans for the house to be “gathering central for their children, future grandchildren, their friends, and their families for the next 15 to 20 years,” there were three “must-haves” for the residence: First, they wanted an inviting and functional kitchen with an oversized island and additional seating for both formal and casual dining. The kitchen custom cabinetry is solid maple painted white with pewter glaze and finished with Bianco Antico granite. The island features the same granite over stained charcoal cabinetry. soundproofing was added between the game room and the bedrooms for noise reduction, so “little children or rowdy adult “children” can watch television and play games without disturbing others. retreat from the everyday world. The master bedroom is bathed in natural light, featuring a beautiful stepped ceiling accented with Gauntlet Grey paint in a flat finish and dark Harmon Manor Onyx maple flooring. A Bronze Brocade tile has been used on the walls leading you to the master bath where the same tile is used as a backdrop for the tub and in the seemingly floating shower. The tiles’ brocade pattern is delicately shaped by a smooth texture and enriched by a seductive play of shadow and light from the skillful crystal lighting placement in the framed mirrors of the vanities. CANNON GOES COASTAL

Contemporary Masterpiece When empty-nesters Pam and Drew Trapani were looking for a homesite and custom homebuilder in Sarasota, there were some things they knew they wanted: a home on the water, great views, clean lines and a modern flair. Pam, originally from Minneapolis and owner of Taylored Golf Shops, and Drew, a retired orthodontist, had been searching Siesta Key for the perfect homesite. Once they decided upon their parcel, they wanted to be certain to select the right builder, who could transform their ideas for a perfect home and have it work on the site. “This is actually the fourth home we have had built over the past 13 years, our third in Florida,” Drew said. “We were working with a realtor who had a connection with John Cannon. John came out, walked the homesite, located on the northern tip of Siesta Key, and made his recommendations. Pam turned to me and said, ‘that’s what I wanted to hear; this is it.’” John Cannon offered all the special design acumen and personalized service that only John Cannon Homes can provide, designing the 4 bedroom, 5 bath 5,020 SF Coastal Contemporary home to take advantage of the spectacular views

With an extensive list of ‘must haves,’ according to Pam, the home John Cannon created was everything they dreamed of, showcasing distinctive design touches that make the home a contemporary masterpiece. “Our former home in Elgin, Illinois, was very traditional,” Pam said, “and we wanted something that was simply more open, with lots of glass and open spaces.” Since the house was going to be on the water, they didn’t want to limit the waterfront views to just the great room: the result is a home designed where you experience those spectacular views from almost every room in the home. “John Cannon really made the extra effort and in working with his designer, they achieved a remarkable design.” Located at the end of a cul-de-sac, driftwoodgrey pavers lead to the front entrance and here is where you begin to notice the home’s exterior colors mimic the soft sand, blue and turquoise colors that are found on Siesta Key. Two of the guest suites share a balcony overlooking the outdoor living areas below and an additional guest room and bonus room with a separate outdoor lanai also showcases the ever-changing waterfront views. Having been through the building process many times before, they invested quite a bit of time researching custom home builders, and they kept coming back to John Cannon Homes. “We’d been to the Parade of Homes, visited their model homes - along with other builders and the quality of construction, the style sense, it was all there with John Cannon Homes,” Drew said. Pam said they had over two pages of ‘musthaves and wants,’ in the beginning of the project, and both she and Drew agree, “John Cannon Homes was able to make 95% of them happen.” “Working with John Cannon, and his team was fabulous. When you build a custom home, you invest a lot of both time and money - and you want the lot to be right, and the home to be right.
