JC proudly participated in Catholic Schools Week in January and was honored to have Bishop Gerald Barbarito celebrate the Ring Mass on January 26th. Students have continued to enjoy their class retreats at St. Mark’s Parish. The traditionally held retreats include breakaway sessions, prayer time, private time to read retreat letters and reflect, with the day concluding with a mass. The Senior Class was fortunate to utilize the Lawnwood Pavilion and participate in the ropes course. Ash Wednesday mass on February 25th was emotional and uplifting for students and staff. For Lent, the John Carroll faith community was given a nail attached to a San Damiano prayer card to ponder the following...”What will you do with your nail?” We are called to use the nail to build a stronger community (for example building a Habitat home) instead of re-crucifying Christ through negative behavior. As we close out Lent and begin Holy Week, the JCHS faith community will have the opportunity to pray the Living Stations of the Cross. Thank you to school Chaplain, Joe Colarossi, Colarossi for organizing the school masses. “Our faith is at the center of what we do as a Catholic School. We celebrate God’s love for us and the blessings that we continue to receive. As we journey through the holy season of Lent, we strive to seek forgiveness from the Lord for our sins and to participate meaningfully in the Cross of Christ. If we do this, we will indeed be prepared for the joys of Easter!” Father Barrett, President President. “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.” ~ 1 Peter 1:3

A message from the President Dear Alumni and Friends, There is something for everyone this Spring!

Academics JC’s National Honor Society proudly inducted a new group of deserving students on March 9th. The society now has more than 120 members, each of whom has higher than a 4.4 weighted GPA (on a 6 point scale). The group annually supports St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital by sending donations made from their school-wide fundraisers.

Drama club students enjoyed their annual trip to New York City.

Sports New sport at JCHS: We are the only school in St. Lucie County to feature boys’ and girls’ lacrosse!

The boys’ lacrosse team is improving every day, even beating Melbourne Central Catholic during its third game.

Arts

Boys’’ lacrosse head co oach Tom Parkinson’s Parkinson’ kinson’s ins s favorite quote for the seaso on… o During the third game, a JC CHS senior asks an opposing playe er how long he had been playing. “Four years,” he states, “and yo o ou?” “Four days,” commentss the JC player. JCHS later w won that game over M MCC 4-3!

Girls Lacrosse has 26 enthusiastic, young players with a lot of potential. Kaela Conway and Lorena Klapetsky were voted team captains and have previous playing experience. Coaching the girls team is Lisa Conway as head coach, Kevin Pastore as assistant coach, and Kyle Daigle as the team manager. Boys’ Lacrosse has experienced players Brandon Dodson at attack and Ryan Slack as goalie. The first home game attracted a strong crowd in the stadium. Team captains are Justin ustin Caddell and Ryan Slack Slack. The first goal was scored by Chris Angelos.

Our JCHS Drama Club students were blessed with the opportunity to travel to New York City in March! The students saw numerous plays, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Rockefeller Center, went ice skating, enjoyed delicious food, and squeezed in some NYC shopping!

Community Service

Hands-on classrom experiments challenge students academically.

JCHS held school drives to support soldiers and the Pregnancy Care Center. Students and staff made numerous boxes in honor of Capt. Adam Synder, a local fallen soldier and brother of a JC student. Students and staff donated personal hygiene items, notes, treats, and non-perishable food. The boxes were mailed to JC family members and friends serving in the military. The Youth For Life Club collected more than 50 packages of diapers and wipes to donate to the Pregnancy Care Center in Ft. Pierce. The club also toured the facility and delivered the items to the grateful center.

JCHS Girls’ lacrosse is now one of the most popular sports on campus.

“I am truly enjoying the opportunity working with the girls, and appreciate all the support I have been getting from the staff of John Carroll-from the volunteers helping with the games, to the teachers letting me know how excited everyone is- it has made it all that much better for my passion for ladies’ lacrosse” ~Lisa Lisa Conway, Conway girls’ lacrosse head coach

These recent accomplishments are a true testament to the exceptional students and John Carroll High chool and its diversity. We are proud of their athletic abilities, work in the arts and community, commitment to Christianity, and academic studies! May God continue to bless you, our students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends. Sincerely Yours in Christ,

Rev. Thomas E. Barrett, President

Donor Spotlight - Lindsey McAlarnen (‘07) Lindsey has generously donated to the JCHS Annual Giving Campaign every year since graduation and sets a stellar example for all young alumni to follow. Thank you, Lindsey! “After graduating two years ago, I cannot help but look back on all that John Carroll helped me achieve. As a rising junior at the University of Notre Dame, I am one of the most prepared students on campus to tackle the future. I feel the school truly helped me become the well-rounded person I am today and therefore, I feel it is vitally important to give back to John Carroll. . When each alumnus looks back on his experience, he cannot help but agree that he took something valuable and practical from his four years as a Golden Ram. I can personally attest to the fact that the faculty and staff of John Carroll Lindsey and her parents at the have helped me to become a good student, compassionate future physician, and University of Notre Dame. even a better citizen. For this I am eternally grateful, and I feel that it is important for all alumni to contribute to John Carroll so current students can continue to receive the same formation into genuine citizens that we as alumni have received. I believe in sharing my blessings with others, and John Carroll as the root of those blessings deserves everything that we as alumni are able to give. As alumni we should contribute as much as our means allow toward improving John Carroll for future students.”

Alumni In Actio n 1968

DuPont Fellow and Lavoisier medalist Charles J. Noelke was elected to the National Academy of Engineers this month for his distinguished work as part of a team that led the company’s efforts to develop and commercialize the replacement process of technology for chlorofluorocarbons (CFC) in refrigerants. Election to the National Academy of Engineering is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer. Academy membership honors those who have made outstanding contributions to “engineering research, practice, or education, including, where appropriate, significant contributions to engineering literature,” and to the “pioneering of new and developing fields of technology, making major advancements in traditional fields of engineering, or developing/implementing innovative approaches to engineering education.” Charles, a chemical engineer at DuPont Fayetteville, NC site, led the team that developed HFC-134a, a replacement to CFC refrigerants that were recognized in the early 1970s to be accumulating in the atmosphere and potentially depleting the earth’s ozone layer. Today Charles is developing a range of environmentally smart alternative processes for making fluorochemicals, fluoromonomers and fluoropolymers. In 2006, he received the prestigeous Collaboration of the Year Award from the Chemical Council for Research for his collaborative efforts on carbon dioxide based polymerization in conjunction with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
