Disruption is a natural part of a business – but this does not mean that leaders should ignore it or the effects it can cause. When disruptions occur, much of this weight tends to fall on the leadership of a company, as they are the ones that must make the tough decisions. In other words, leaders must navigate and lead their teams through disruption. This can be challenging, but history has proven that it is entirely possible. Read below for some advice on how to prepare your team for disruption. Trust Your Team Any good leader will tell you that delegation is essential to survive. Leaders who cannot share the workload will eventually crack under pressure. Thus, leaders must learn to trust their team. This is especially true when facing disruption.

A team working together can find more ways and alternatives to dealing with the same issue than one person on their own. It’s okay for leaders to bring an issue to the team. But remember, leaders should always be willing to make the final decision. Provide Direction The term leader has an obvious implication, as those in this role are meant to lead. Leaders must provide their team with direction, especially during disruptive times. This means constantly reminding the team of goals, plans, and what the company stands for. Remember that it is okay to change that direction as needed. However, there is a sense of transparency about it. Companies must adapt to survive, especially as the climate around them changes. ~

Before stepping up and preparing your team for disruption, you must first prepare yourself. The best way to do this is through research. Look to others in the industry, especially your direct competition, to understand what preparation is underway. Likewise, it is okay to reach out to others in similar roles to get advice. For those leaders who have a mentor, now would be an excellent time to ask for feedback. Ultimately, there is no correct answer for preparing a team for disruption. It is up to the leader to find the best combination of strategies for their team. As with many aspects of leadership, it is all about finding that ideal combination for the team.
