JASPER IN JANUARY One of the best times to experience Jasper National Park in winter is during the annual twoweek Jasper in January festival when hotels, restaurants and attractions offer reduced rates and there are special programs, celebrations and events to enjoy. Festival goers can choose from a range of activities including sporting competitions, live musical performances, a chili cook-off, wine tastings, dog sledding, ice skating, special workshops, an ice bar and a huge street party with live performers and fireworks. Marmot Basin Ski Area gets in on the fun with discounted lift tickets, live music on weekends and entertaining events including the Dual Slalom Race. New this year: A fat-bike racing series through the snow.

EXPERIENCE MAGIC IN BANFF In Banff National Park, brawn meets beauty at the Lake Louise Ice Magic Festival. Over three days in late January, watch professional carvers compete in a test of brute strength, artistry and precision – creating delicate sculptures from 136 kg (300 lb) blocks of ice. Just being in this glittering winter wonderland inspires ice-skating on Lake Louise or taking a horsedrawn sleigh ride along the shore. Afterwards, keep that magic alit with an alpine fondue dinner at the fairy tale Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise.

SNOW PARTY Celebrate ice, snow and all things frosty at the SnowDays festival in Banff National Park. This tribute to winter sports launches in midJanuary with an alpine bash of epic proportions. The kick-off street party in Banff features ice skating, ice carving, live music and beer gardens, complete with a bar made out of ice. There’s even an ice fire pit. Be sure to check out the coolest playground in town where you can get lost – and found – in the ice maze, fly down an ice slide and glide around the skating rink. All the festivities lead up to The Big Bear ski and rail event. Chill out to cool beats while watching pro boarders destroy the Bear’s custom designed ramps and rails. Hot tunes, cool moves and bragging rights – are you ready to party? 13

ALL THINGS ICY Over two weekends at the end of January and beginning of February, the Ice on Whyte Festival takes over a park in Edmonton’s Old Strathcona district. Somewhere around 68,000 kg (150,000 pounds) of ice is trucked in to make giant ice slides, skating surfaces and great blocks of it get carved up by the pros at the International Ice Carving Competition. Give it a try at a carving workshop. Skate or dance the night away. Don’t miss the fire and ice extravaganza on the last night.

SILVER SKATE TRADITIONS Edmonton has more festivals yearround than you can shake a hockey stick at. The Silver Skate Festival is the city’s oldest winter event, taking place over 10 days each February at Hawrelak Park. Start with a wander through the snow sculpture garden, try your hand at curling, and don’t miss the Kortebaan – a long-blade skating race with Dutch origins. Lots to do when the sun goes down, too. Check out the live entertainment at Night Works. Make sure you catch the ever-popular Fire Sculpture event. Best part? Free admission. 14

Zeki Findikoglu was born in 1946 in Iznik, Turkey, and has lived in virtually every region of the Anatolian Peninsula. The rich variety of cultural and artistic traditions he witnessed in Turkey developed into a lifelong interest. Zeki moved to the United States in 1973. A professional artist since 1970 and an art professor since 1977, Zeki has gained international acclaim. His highly stylized paintings and prints incorporate Turkish culture and artistic contentions, extending them with a modern artistic vocabulary to provide a bridge between ancient and contemporary art. Zekiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s works have been exhibited in the US and Turkey, as well as Europe and Asia.

or many of us, spring brings the most exciting adventures outdoors. How many of us experience that same spirit indoor as well? If you haven’t been one to transition the interior of your home seasonally, this is the year to start. Spring is the perfect time to bring the outdoors in and give your oasis a new breath of fresh air. It’s time to put away the heavy fabrics and dark accessories and bring out the lighter and brighter looks for spring. Spring is a time of rebirth and renewal in the outdoors. This is a perfect reason to orchestrate the same inside. Pack away the dark colors that felt so cozy in the winter and replace them with fresh, brighter colors. Substitute browns, blacks and deep jewel tones with pastels and bright colors. There are so many ways to add color to a space.

An easy and affordable way to update your home for spring is to add colorful accents such as yellow throw pillows or vases in a floral pattern. Adding plants and flowers to your home is such an easy, but important, way to add color, texture and scent to a room without any effort. Tulips, pussy willow or branches of apple blossom will shout out spring; or make a statement with succulents, banana leaves or palms. What’s particularly great about flowers is that every color and combination work together, so it’s a great way to experiment with colors you wouldn’t normally put together. It’s also a great time to layer with textures to add interest. Cool neutrals with a single pop of color in a home, like light blue artwork or bright yellow accessories, add memory points and give the eye a 21

place to rest. Switch out your decorative pillows and throws for lightweight fabrics, like linen and prints. Linen drapes hung extra long drape the floor, helping the space feel lighter and airier. Plus, new bedding is an easy way to brighten a space. Consider light colors or layered textures of whites. Window treatments can have a big impact. In the spring, replace your heavy draperies with light and colorful curtains and shades. Ready-made curtain panels can be purchased for very little money so it doesn’t have to be a costly change. Of course, if you want something really specific, it’s usually worth it to have custom window treatments made. A fresh coat of paint on the walls is always a great way to

transform a space. A lighter shade can make your interior not only look brighter, but larger and more open. If the trim on the walls is a dark color, consider painting it a light shade like white – something that can help accent the area in a brighter way. There is a deepseated notion that many people inherit from their parents that one should never paint wood. There is a time (and a space) for dark wood, but don’t sacrifice light over keeping natural wood when you won’t be drawn to a dark room. Painted trim, wainscoting, coffered ceilings and staircases can be stunning and really open up an area to make the home your own. Paint your wood furniture. Choose a sunny shade or soft pastel to refresh a wooden coffee

table or a chair, which then adds a new accent to the room. Add a burst of color to a neutral space too. While white and grey can be calming, there is nothing like a shot of color to cheer you up. Spring is also a great time add new interest to your coffee table. We forget that this little table can be one of the focal points of your interior. Editing and introducing new accessories is an easy way to set the tone. Simply adding a vase of flowers, new books/magazines, candles or items of interest in lighter colors adds springtime appeal. Lastly, layer in natural elements to add warmth. There is nothing like a beautifully bound sisal rug to cohesively tie a room together. Sisal and jute rugs are the perfect texture to add depth and dimension to a room, but most importantly, they are low maintenance and therefore the perfect fit for a high traffic room. I use them often in homes with pets and young children because they can pretty much withstand anything. Sisalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s natural color variations allows it to play well with both warm and cool color schemes and allows other important design elements such as furniture or art to take center stage, even in a formal living room. If rugs arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t an option for you, layer in driftwood, wicker baskets or wooden objects. They will create the same texture and flow as well as provide conversation pieces. 24

DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT THE BEST OF THE BEST

ZOE FELDMAN

oë Feldman is a boutique Washington, DC based interior design firm. Zoe has been decorating homes along the East Coast for over 15 years. An accomplished freelance writer and TV personality, Zoe has been published in several national websites and appeared on multiple television shows. Zoe was an ivillage Home and Garden expert writing pieces on decorating and entertaining and appearing as a guest “ivillage expert” on the accompanying television show, ivillage LIVE. Most notably, she has appeared as a guest decorator on NBC’s Today Show. In 2011, Zoe was presented the “Ones To Watch” award by the DC Design Center. Zoe studied design at Parsons School of Design and worked for four years as a designer for Alexa 26

Drawing inspiration from the traditional style reminiscent of her New York training and education with her early exposure to modern art and design, she works with clients to create a space to suit their personal needs. Her finely tuned knowledge of color, detail and function allows her to work in a range of styles to construct a signature look tailored to reflect the space in which she is working. Currently, Zoe Feldman Design, Inc. is decorating houses in the Washington, DC Metro area, NYC, the Hamptons and South Florida.

CULTURE WHERE ART AND LIFE MEET

ZILIA SÁNCHEZ Soy Isla (I Am an Island) February 16 - May 19, 2019 The Phillips Collection The Phillips Collection presents the first museum retrospective of Cuban artist Zilia Sánchez (b. 1926, Havana). This long-overdue exhibition examines the artist’s prolific, yet largely unknown career that spans almost 70 years. The exhibition features approximately 65 works including paintings, works on paper, shaped canvases and sculptural pieces, alongside illustrations, design sketches, and ephemera, that trace Sánchez’s artistic journey from her early days in Cuba to her extended visits to Europe and travels to America, and finally her move to Puerto Rico, where she now lives and works. Many of Sánchez’s works reference protagonists from ancient mythology (such as Trojans, Amazonians and Antigone—all warriors and female heroines). Others have reoccurring motifs of lunar shapes, erotic topologies and tattoo drawings that map physical and psychological spaces and add another dimension to her curvilinear geometry, rich with metaphorical meaning. The exhibition title, Soy Isla (I am an Island), serves as a personal metaphor for Sanchez’s experience as an islander—connected and disconnected from both the mainland and mainstream art currents.

BANFF CENTRE MOUNTAIN FILM FESTIVAL January 23, 2019 - January 26, 2019, 7 PM - 10 PM January 30, 2019 - February 2, 2019, 7 PM - 10 PM National Geographic Every year, during the first week of November, hundreds of explorers, adventurers and filmmakers gather in the picturesque town of Banff, in the Canadian Rockies, to view some of the world’s top films on the great outdoors and mountain culture. For 20 years the best films from the festival have thrilled enthusiastic audiences at National Geographic. This year, Nat Geo will have four evenings of screenings repeated over two weeks—curated for the public by the tour’s expert hosts. Each evening will include an intermission.

WOMEN ARE BUSY. REALLY BUSY. SO HOW DOES ONE “WAKE UP READY” TO START THE DAY? CONTRASTING COLORS â&#x20AC;&#x153;When you pair a white exterior with black window trim, the windows become a focal point, a decorative element,â&#x20AC;? says Oursler. White exteriors are a perfect complement to a beach setting where homeowners want light and fresh homes, while black window trim continues to be an excellent way to add contrast both inside and out. Incorporate wrought iron railings along interior stairways and the impact is dramatic. 37

MIXED METALS & MATERIALS Whether mixing metals in hardware or lighting, the trend continues, says Oursler. In recent projects, she often blends silver and brass. And for a statement chandelier, Oursler suggests opting for beaded chandeliers or other materials besides wood.

WHAT’S OLD IS NEW With farmhouse style remaining popular, Oursler repurposes materials whenever possible for added charm and character, as well as a conversation starter for a home. In a recent remodeling project, she took the old hardwood floors, kiln dried them, and made the wood into kitchen shelves, a dining table and a fireplace mantel. “Blending old with new is always on trend,” Oursler says. 39

We all have our holidays that we celebrate. In the winter, we have Valentine’s Day and St. Patrick’s Day. Also, many have birthdays. What is wrong with spicing the holidays up a bit? Everybody can have a fun break by making traditions we all love a little more special! Kids love it when our houses look new and creative. Using decorations is a great way to help with that. You could add a couple of festive pillows to your couch. That way it will be comfortable and make your house look festive. Lights are also another way to bring a bit of pizzazz to your home. instead of electric lights you can use candles which make your house smell nice. Kids love watching the colorful lights, or the fire flicker, and when you’re done with the candle your kid can blow it out! Lights make your house look a little merrier. There are some things that only come out during special times. Decorations, festivities, the special silverware, but what about different

food? You can see a special treat in a grocery store and then it’s gone. It was sold out or they don’t make it for the season anymore. Treating your kids to something special that they never get will make everyone merrier. Maybe special chocolate chip pancakes for Valentine’s Day or soda bread for St. Pat’s. It will surprise them and get your family ready for the holiday. What if you didn’t always have to pay a bunch of money for your decorations? There are a bunch of fun crafts you can do for the holidays, plus it will bring back memories when your kids are older where they remember making it. Holidays are some of the best times of the year, so make it more special and have fun, don’t forget, this is your break too.

Many would agree that sometimes the perfect cup of kindness is a great Scotch Whisky cocktail. When selecting a great cocktail to revel in the “Good Old Times”, the place to start with is a classic base of Whisky, Bitters, and Sugar. We use the one and only “Chivas Regal Mizunara”, an exclusive edition of the iconic blended whisky finished in specialty barrels of the rare Japanese Mizunara Oak. The fine grain of the oak adds texture and brightness to the specialty blend and a depth to the body and breadth to the taste. Capping off the flavors are pear and plum, which are only heightened by the touch of baking spice indicative of the St. George spice pear liqueur. Bight, spicy, vibrant and strong. Just the way the “Good Old Times” are evoked upon the raising of glasses.

“AE FOND” Glassware: Chilled Cocktail Glass Method: In a cocktail shaker combine all ingredients with ice, then shake vigorously until the shaker fully frosts over. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass and briefly let the egg white foam rise to the top of the drink and slightly set. Using a cocktail jigger, lightly float the .5 oz. of red wine onto the drink so that it layers between the liquid of the cocktail and the egg white froth at the top. Garnish with a lemon twist, serve and enjoy. Ingredients: 1 oz. Aberlour A’Bunadh 1 oz. Pere Magloire Calvados .5 oz. Lemon Juice .5 oz. Honey Syrup 1 Dash Vanilla Extract 1 Egg White Garnish: 5 oz. Float of Red Wine and a Lemon Twist While the New Year looks to fond times ahead, sometimes it comes with the memories of a lost love. Such is the sweet sadness of Robert Burns’ famous “Ae Fond Kiss”. To properly toast a bittersweet memory, nothing but the strongest and most robust Scotch whiskies will do. Here the Aberlour A’Bunadh releases its charm. At approximately 60% alcohol by volume, this single malt packs a punch, yet the sweet and floral notes from the 100% sherry cask ageing releases a richness not unlike a true embrace of passion. To lighten the strength yet perfectly pair with the single malt, Calvados (apple brandy) adds seasonal and warming notes to the palate. Citrus and honey fill out the seductive senses of the cocktail, which are only topped by the elevated notes of the vanilla extract. The egg white adds silkiness to texture. However, just as Burns’ works would go down in history, he would find a new love and memories to be “Ae Fond” of.

HEATHY RECIPES TO KICK START 2019

TURKEY TORTILLA SOUP INGREDIENTS 2 teaspoons olive oil 1 onion, roughly chopped 3-4 cloves garlic, roughly chopped 1 jalapeño pepper, stem and seeds removed and roughly chopped kosher salt and freshly cracked black pepper 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano 1/4 teaspoon cumin 1/4 teaspoon ground chipotle pepper 1 14-ounce can fire roasted tomatoes and green chiles 3 cups chicken stock 15 ounces black beans, drained 1 cup frozen corn 2 cups Shredded Turkey (or a 1 rotisserie chicken, shredded) TOPPINGS small wedge of Colby jack cheese, freshly shredded, Limes, Avocado, Cilantro Tortillas, cut into thin strips

DIRECTIONS Heat a large saucepan over medium high heat. Add the onion, garlic and jalapeño and sauté for until the onion is translucent and the jalapeño softens. Season with the salt, pepper, dried oregano, cumin and chipotle pepper. Stir to combine and cook for 1-2 minutes until the spices toast. Add the fire roasted tomatoes and the turkey stock and bring the mixture to a boil. Reduce to a simmer and simmer for 30 minutes. Using an immersion blender, blend the soup ingredients until smooth. Taste and adjust salt and pepper as needed. Add the black beans, corn and shredded turkey and let them come to temperature before serving. Serve the soup into bowls and top with cheese, avocado, cilantro and crisp tortilla strips. Add extra lime juice if desired. Serve immediately. To make the tortilla strips: In a small skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium high heat. Once hot, add the tortilla strips in a single layer, frying quickly for about 30-45 seconds, flipping them once to ensure both sides get crisp. Remove the tortillas once crisp with a pair of tongs and transfer them to a paper towel lined plate to dry. Season with salt.

CHICKEN ENCHILADAS VERDES INGREDIENTS FOR THE SAUCE 2 tablespoons olive oil 1/2 onion, quartered 1 poblano chile, halved 2 pounds tomatillos (about 20 medium), husks removed, rinsed 2 serrano chiles, chopped 3 garlic cloves, smashed 1 cup homemade chicken stock or low-sodium chicken broth 1/2 cup cilantro leaves with tender stems, chopped 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice Kosher salt FOR THE ENCHILADAS 1/2 rotisserie chicken, skin removed, meat shredded 1/2 teaspoon ground coriander 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes Kosher salt 1 cup vegetable oil 8 6-inch corn or flour tortillas 8 ounces shredded monterey jack cheese (thinly shredded) 2 ounces Cotija cheese, finely grated for serving 1/2 cup crème fraîche 1 tablespoon milk or water 1/2 red onion, thinly sliced fresh cilantro to garnish

DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 425 degrees F. Drizzle the olive oil over onion, poblano, and tomatillos on a baking sheet and roast until vegetables are soft and browned, 35–40 minutes. Let cool slightly before peeling the skin off the poblano. Transfer onion mixture and any juices to a blender. Add serrano chiles, garlic, chicken stock, cilantro, and lime juice and purée until smooth. Transfer to a large bowl, then season with salt and pepper as needed. Toss the chicken with the ground coriander, red pepper flakes, and 1/2 cup green sauce in a large bowl and season with salt and pepper. Heat vegetable oil in a medium skillet over mediumhigh. Working one at a time, fry tortilla, turning once, until just starting to brown and crisp, about 10 seconds per side. Transfer tortilla to paper towels to drain. Repeat with remaining tortillas. Dip both sides of each tortilla in green sauce just to coat, then transfer to a baking sheet. Spread 1 cup green sauce lengthwise down the center of a 13x9" baking dish. Working one at a time, spoon ¼ cup of the chicken mixture into the center of tortilla and fold one side over filling, then continue to roll enchilada up like a burrito. Place seam side down in prepared baking dish as you go, fitting them all in. Top with the remaining green sauce and then pile on the cheese. Bake until sauce is bubbling and cheese is beginning to brown, 20–25 minutes. While the enchiladas are baking, combine the crème fraîche and milk and season with salt. Serve enchiladas topped with cheese, a drizzle of crema, sliced onion and cilantro.

LIME-MANGO SORBET INGREDIENTS 5 cups chopped ripe mango (about 5 mangoes), fresh or frozen (see Tips) 1/2 cup water 1 teaspoon lime zest 1/4 cup lime juice 1/4 cup sugar

DIRECTIONS Puree mango in a food processor until smooth. Combine water, lime zest, lime juice and sugar in a small saucepan. Heat over medium heat, stirring, until the sugar is dissolved. Stir the syrup into the fruit puree. Chill the mixture in the refrigerator until cold, about 4 hours. Pour the sorbet mixture into an ice cream maker. (No ice cream maker? See Tips.) Freeze according to the manufacturer's directions. Tips: If using frozen fruit, measure it frozen and then thaw before pureeing. If you don't have an ice cream maker, freeze the mixture in a shallow metal cake pan or ice cube trays until solid, about 6 hours. Break into chunks and process in a food processor until smooth, stopping to scrape down the sides as needed.

HOW DO YOU NAVIGATE BONDS IN A RISING INTEREST RATE ENVIRONMENT? Interest rates have been dropping for the past 37 years and they bottomed in 2016. A good example is the average mortgage rate. In 1981, the average mortgage rate reached 16.64%, by 1985, the rate dropped to 12.43%, then, by 1990 it dropped to 10.13%. By 1995 it was down to 7.93% and by 2001 it was at 6.97%. In 2011, it was down to 4.45%, and in 2016 it bottomed out to an average of 3.65%. Now we see rates starting to rise. The big question is â&#x20AC;&#x153;how does that make investing and home buying different now as compared to the last 37 years?â&#x20AC;? The first thing happening is bond investments are changing. If you bought a bond in a declining interest rate market, the market values of your bonds were either staying stable or they were going up in value. An example would be if you bought a bond in 1985 when the interest rate was around 12.4%. For each $100,000 invested, you were getting $12,400 of bond interest per year. If you were to purchase that bond in 1990 when the interest rate was 10.13%, you would get $10,130 for each $100,000 invested. If you were to sell the first bond paying $12,400 and the current bonds only paid $10,130, you will be able to get substantially more for your higher interest rate bond. Now we are in the opposite situation. You may have a bond at 2.5% that is getting interest of $2,500 on a $100,000 bond. Today you can purchase a bond that has about 3% interest, that bond would generate $3,000 of interest. If you were to sell the

2.5% bond, you would get less for the bond since you can get 20% more interest per year. Fast forward several years into the future and say that you were able to get 6% on a bond. Your bond at 2.5% generating $2,500 per year would be deeply discounted if you can get the $6,000 for the same investment. The moral of the story is that long-term bonds are usually good to buy in stable or declining interest rate environments like the timeframe of 1981 through last year. The drop in interest rates makes the value increase or remain stable and is good for a bond investment, either in individual bonds or bond funds. The issue with bond funds is that they are constantly buying and selling bonds, so in a declining interest rate market, it can work out fine. In a rising interest rate market, it may not work as well because you are buying bonds at a higher interest rate, but the older lower interest rate bonds are worth less as time goes on. The best strategy in a rising interest rate environment would be to do a bond ladder. A bond ladder is where you buy bonds that mature in 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 years. As each bond matures, you purchase a 10-year bond. This way, if you need money, you will have the chance each year to take money out from the bond that matured that year. If you do not need money, you can purchase a 10-year bond and next year the bond that you purchased with a 2-year maturity will come due and then you have the choice of either using the funds from the matured bond or buying a new

10-year bond to add to your bond ladder. The ladder is easier to maneuver than a bond fund; you usually need a substantial amount of money to do the bond ladder, usually no less than $500,000. I hope this helps you understand the way bonds work in a rising interest rate environment. The holiday season has past with an abundance of temptation, rich, delicious food, parties, sweet treats and large family dinners. No doubt it was almost impossible to avoid a little indulgence. Here is the key to not only surviving holidays and special events, but throughout the year without having to buy new stretchy pants – allowing yourself to enjoy a few treats with no guilt. If you set the intention of eating/ drinking just a little, it is entirely possible to not go up a dress size. Start with the philosophy that there are no GOOD or BAD foods/drinks, just ones that support your goals and ones that do not. As soon as we set up that dichotomy, we also set ourselves up for failure. You see, if you tell yourself that something is ‘bad’, ‘off limits’ or ‘forbidden,’ not only does it immediately become way more tempting (think saying no to a small child,) but it also means that, god forbid, you have even one small bite or sip of said treat, you have failed. Once you have failed, well heck, you may as well just continue to bite two, then three and you know where this goes. Set yourself a goal, then you get to decide which food and drink choices support that and which don’t. It goes along the lines of if you fail to plan then you plan to fail. So how does this look in real life? Let’s say you have a work party to attend where there will be snacks and plenty to drink, in this situation try to eat a healthy meal one hour before you go out. Fill up on nonstarchy veggies and lean protein so you will feel satiated for a good while and less inclined to reach for the snacks. If there is a mouthwatering selection of snacks, set yourself a reasonable number you

can enjoy with no guilt and stop when you get there. Drink plenty of water and be sure to have water with you at the party. Chose a glass of wine or vodka soda over a big sugary cocktail or beer and match each drink with a glass of water. If you are going to a party with a friend use him/her as an accountability partner to help keep you on track. Plan to do something active the next day that would be difficult with a hangover to help you avoid temptation. Moving your body burns off that extra energy (calories) you may be putting into your system, so dance the night away and make the most of a fun time. This pre-gaming exercise is a great one for any social situation that takes you out of your usual routine. Load up on the healthy stuff so there is less room for the indulgent treats/drinks. CLYDE’S Chief Executive Officer of Clyde’s Restaurant Group, John G. Laytham died January 3rd at the age of 74. Clyde’s was the first bar/restaurant in Georgetown to open on a Sunday, the first restaurant in Georgetown to serve brunch, and the first restaurant in Georgetown to hire women as waiters. The 1976 hit song “Afternoon Delight” by Starland Vocal Band was inspired by the spicy happy hour menu at Clyde’s of Georgetown. The company’s meticulous and deliberate expansion has been largely credited to Laytham’s business acumen and entrepreneurial spirit. Since its 1970 purchase of Old Ebbitt Grill, the city’s oldest restaurant, CRG has expanded into a nationally recognized local restaurant company consisting of thirteen locations in D.C., Northern Virginia and Maryland. ST.PATRICK’S DAY PARADE

The 2019 St. Patrick’s Day parade in D.C. has been canceled due to the rising cost of security. The celebration of Irish pride held every March will be postponed so the organizers can continue searching for pots of gold to fund a parade in 2020. The St. Patrick’s Parade Committee, which is run by volunteers, says their biggest expense every year is government-related security and street closure costs. Some costs are offset by a grant from the D.C. government, but the committee says it couldn’t keep up with new security requirements put in place after 86 people were killed in a car attack in Nice, France, during a Bastille Day celebration.

Get ready for more dockless electric bikes and electric scooters in the District in 2019. The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) recently announced that it has provisionally approved permits for eight companies to provide the shared vehicles this year, following a spike in the number of permit applicants. These initial permits will make way for as many as 6,000 dockless vehicles on D.C.’s streets, or more than double the 2,400 dockless vehicles allowed as of the end of 2018. (The city has run a pilot program for the vehicles since 2017.)

The city hosts the world’s largest Saint Patrick’s Day parade - and has done so since 1762, 14 years before the United States signed the Declaration of Independence. Dublin’s St. Patrick’s Day celebrations may not be as big as New York City’s - but they are much longer. The city celebrates the public holiday with a week of celebrations which include boat races, street and music performances, the Irish Beer & Whisky Festival, and, of course, the parade. Known as the “Emerald Isle” of the Caribbean, Montserrat is the only other place outside of Ireland where St Patrick’s Day is considered a public holiday. Irish descendants make up most of the inhabitants of the island located in the British West Indies. The day is commemorated with a 10-day festival, which includes festivities such as a Kite Festival and a St Patrick’s Day dinner. BUENOS AIRES

Buenos Aires looks more like Dublin than the “Paris of South America” on March 17th. The capital city hosts the biggest St. Patrick’s Day celebration in South America. Not only does it put on a spectacular parade, it hosts an annual street party in the city center with lots of music and dancing, including Irish-flavored rock groups and one of the largest Irish dance schools in South America. Toronto has been putting on one of the biggest and wildest St. Patrick’s Day Parades for more than 150 years. The approximately 90-minute parade kicks off at noon and attracts over a half-million spectators. Afterward, the celebration continues at many of the city’s bars, restaurants and other venues. Some of the best places for a green beer- or Guinness-filled night includes the Watermark Irish Pub & Restaurant, with its prime waterfront spot offering amazing views, as well as McVeigh’s, the quintessential Irish bar that’s been in the same location at Church and Richmond for nearly 50 years.
