DESTINATIONS TRAVEL & INSPIRATION

CELEBRATING THE HOLIDAYS SEASIDE One of America’s little treasures is the island town of Newport, Rhode Island. And, for the holidays, the town shines with traditional brilliance. The holidays are, quite simply, a magical time throughout Newport. In fact, Newport was recently named one of the 10 Best American Beach Towns for Christmas by Coastal Living Magazine.

10

JOHN ERIC HOME

There are white lights festooning trees that twinkle like falling snowflakes. Mansions are filled with thousands of poinsettias, evergreens, wreaths and decorated trees. Restaurants are bustling, hotels and inns offer great deals and the countless Christmas in Newport events will keep you on the go. One of the most celebrated customs of this New England town is to nose around its renowned mansions famously decorated for the holidays, notably, The Breakers, The Elms and Marble House. The glitter of gold and the sparkle of silver dazzle as you tour three magnificent mansions decked out in Yuletide finery replete with music and decorations. Once finishing the mansions tour, it is time to get down and dirty – or flour covered – with another Newport treat. Join the pastry chef at Grace Vanderbilt and decorate deliciously fresh, traditional Christmas cookies. Afterwards, take them home and share with friends and family. It’s a fun experience and one in which to make holiday memories. Newport shines with festive, seasonal activities for those who enjoy a good walk. On the “Newport Holiday Lantern Walking Tour,” participants hear the history of early American holiday traditions on an evening walking

tour. You will learn how colonial Newporters recognized (or didn’t) the holidays. While, during “Caroling on Broadway,” carolers are invited to join local musician, Christopher Carbone, the Thompson Middle School chorus and OBNA (Off-Broadway Neighborhood Association) as the group sings along down the street. If you enjoy a brisk weather and a group of singing-revelers, this is for you. The holidays are not understated in this town. Nearly everyone turns out and participates in local festivities. Perhaps, one of the most highly anticipated events of the season is the “Judging of the Newport Doorway Contest,” which takes place on December 15. The categories in this contest are Residential, Restaurant, Bed & Breakfast and Commercial and everyone competes to win the top prizes. Of course, visitors to Newport during this time are met with myriad designs to ponder while walking down its historic streets. Even if not in Newport for the official judging, you and your traveling companions can create your own judging competition – there are plenty of doors to choose from. Stopping by Newport, Rhode Island during the holiday season is, frankly, a great time. Make sure not to miss it!

NEKISHA DURRETT

JOHN ERIC HOME

Nekisha Durrett’s public-art installation at the MLK Jr. Memorial Library — featuring larger-than-life color illustrations — caught the attention of the Nation’s Capital. Her exhibits can be found at Arlington Art Center and the Hillyer Art Space, as well as galleries across the country. Durrett acquired a degree from Cooper Union and an MFA in photography. She has, also, written the graphic novel O’er Yonder. On her creative process: “The process is often painstakingly detailed and involves lots of sitting and squinting in front of my computer and connecting vector points (drawing). A pretty developed idea sparks the initial laying down of circles and lines, but that idea quickly morphs when I see objects and characters emerge from those shapes that I had not previously conceived. This often changes the course of the intended narrative. I tend to be surprised by the end product, and the result is often a meandering or unresolved narrative. And, I enjoy that.” Opposite Page: Couples Austine and Allison (study) Digital Drawing on copy paper 13’ x 10’ 2016 Top Left: A Garden Party Digital Drawing on copy paper 9’ x 16’ 2016

HOME TRENDS WHERE STYLE & ELEGANCE MEET

COZYUP TO NEW TRENDS

by David Brown 16

JOHN ERIC HOME

Fall 2017 is here and you are going to be so excited to see what is in store for you in home design and color hues over the next few months. The style trends are on point and very promising for anyone looking to add a layered up look to any space. As the weather quickly shifts to autumn and the leaves start to fall, it’s the perfect time to embrace a few fall decorating changes. Remember, it doesn’t matter if it’s in or out of style; the most important part is that you and your family loves it! If you are ready to really switch it up, now is the time to embrace warm, rich shades of brown, black, green and blush. Overall room interiors are slowly creeping away from all white and gray. Instead, designers are embracing drama. Rooms are being enveloped in dark paint colors such as onyx, black flame and charcoal. If you aren’t quite ready to take a ride on the dark side, perhaps try a rich chocolate brown or cocoa. Another quick easy way to add these beautiful tones without the long-term commitment is to switch out your pillow covers using these deep colors or find accessories with similar tones. Here are the trends to be on the look out for over the next few months: • Dark Green – things are going green inside this fall. When combined with rich natural wood tones and leather, this color adds depth and refinement to any space. If you accent it with cream and gold tones, it’s the perfect compliment for fall and winter. • Blush – Rosy hues are here to stay. Everything you see will be blush! • Matte Black – Black light fixtures, faucets, appliances and cabinetry are given a new life in this classic non-gloss color finish. • Velvet – There is not much more soothing and luxurious as velvet. The fabric feels scrumptious and welcoming for fall and winter. When you combine it with rough natural textures (reclaimed wood and woven basket) and contrast it with smooth metals and ceramics, it adds interest and coziness to a space. • Woven Texture – Woven textiles and accents bring depth to any space. Utilize market baskets, Kilim rugs, or maybe a

hanging woven pendant light to create interest and warmth in your room. Once again, contrast a rough texture against a smooth texture. Try using soft velvet to hand knit wool throws and compliment them with metal side tables and ceramics. Introduce a rattan rocker or hand woven rattan sitting space. • Vintage Tiles – Thanks to the use of beautiful fired earth molds, archives tile companies are reproducing historic wall and floor tiles. They make beautiful accents to small spaces. • Terracotta Tile – Once again, this classic trend continues into the new season. If you aren’t up for tiling a space, introduce earthenware accessories to add warmth and character to your home.

• Fireplace Focus – It doesn’t take much to feature your hearth. Look for a simple and elegant matte black fireplace screen to add interest to your fireplace. • Luxurious Comfort – It’s all about indulgences this season. The addition of throws, rugs and cushions that have plush, strokable textures are important to add warmth. • Tech Free Sanctuaries – Create a simple intimate tech-free space to “unplug.” Surround your sleeping space with luxurious puffy down linens and place a comfy reading chair in the corner to create a place to curl up and read a good book.

• In-Laid Furniture – Be on the look out for fine, hand-cut, inlaid bone statement pieces this fall. They add allot of texture and a focal point to your space. • Woodland Cabin – Keep your eyes open for understated natureinspired accessories. Pinecones, berries and wooden birds are all the rage. • Vintage Explorer – The interior design world is taking escapist inspiration from historical explorers and naturalists. Vintage globes and suitcases are layered with hints of botany and entomology, in the form of plant drawings and butterfly motifs. Present your “findings” under a bell jar or frame found objects in a group. • Brass – Brass is replacing copper

OCT | NOV | DEC 2017

17

• Quilts – If you are looking to really switch things up, layer a quilt on your bed. The classic handmade element will add a modern or traditional element to what was a cool and sterile space. • Statement Bed Linens – Mixing patterns and adding a little monogram into your bed linens adds a little excitement and warmth this season. • Custom Headboards – Statement headboards are back in a very big way. Look for upholstered, accented with nail heads, slip covered, beautiful simplistic wood and gigantic chunky poster beds. • Bolder Baths – There is a new way of attentiongrabbing, free-standing tubs. • Utilizing Outdoor Spaces Longer – Each year we want to stay outside more and more. Invest in a deep seating patio set and compliment it with a fire pit or outdoor heater. Update your rugs and throw pillows with warmer autumn colors and textures. Create a cozy and inviting space by layering in a few cozy soft quilts and throws. Lastly, switch out those summer plants that are just hanging on with more seasonal ones that will survive the chill.

ANCIENT TEXTILES Textiles, more than gold and precious stones, marked a person’s social status in the ancient Andes. Elite individuals displayed their wealth and privilege by wearing clothing in dazzling colors and striking patterns. M. JANE JOHNSON: SPLENDID FORTITUDE

M. Jane Johnson: Splendid Fortitude The Art League Thru Sunday, November 5, 2017

Mixed media artist M. Jane Johnson’s “Splendid Fortitude” celebrates the incomparable beauty of the geisha – evoking their presence in large, multi-media paintings. Viewers are invited into the wildly colorful and mysterious world of Japanese geisha, on view October 5–November 5, 2017 at The Art League gallery. Johnson “didn’t set out to paint geisha.” According to the artist, the brilliantly hued, enigmatic figures began to take shape in her work soon after a close friend was diagnosed with lung cancer. Johnson was inspired by her friend’s fierce resolve to meet the hardships of her illness with bravery and grace. During this difficult year Johnson noticed that the figures of elegant women, wrapped in gleaming robes, repeatedly emerged and took shape within the abstracted forms in her paintings. They were a fitting muse; after all, the English translation of “geisha” is “artist.” In Johnson’s eyes, geisha captured the spirit of her late friend with their strength, elegance, beauty, and Splendid Fortitude.

Founded in 2017 by Washington, DC artist Maggie O’Neill, Superfierce is a movement within the art industry aimed at creating a foundation of support, connectivity and resources for female artists. More than half of visual artists throughout the world are women, yet less than 5% of work displayed in major museums is created by women. This gross underrepresentation is the force that drives Superfierce in building a universal network of creatives whose common goal is to accelerate female artists’ careers. In providing both established and up-and-coming female artists the tools needed to succeed as entrepreneurs and business owners, Superfierce creates a pay-it-forward platform allowing its network to give back to the ever-evolving art community. “Superfierce is committed to creating a platform of visibility and connectivity for women visual artists,” says Superfierce Founder and Washington, DC artist Maggie O’Neill. “Through awareness, mentorship and business opportunities we intend to change the statistics for female artists by increasing representation in permanent collections while terminating the existing pay gap.” The 2017 Washington, DC Superfierce exhibition runs from October 4th - November 4th at the Blind Whino Arts Club at 700 Delaware St. SW and will feature both

nationally- and locally-known female artists, photographers and sculptors including Anne Marchand, Ashley Longshore, Caitlyn Teal Price, Dominique Fierro, Julie Wolfe, Lana Gomez, Maggie O’Neill, Maryanne Pollock and more. Hours of operation are weekends 12:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. or by appointment. Lyft, Veuve Clicquot and Bureau are sponsoring ongoing activation events throughout the month that are available to the public including panel and networking events in which women business owners share their secrets, strategies and strengths, a portfolio review day in which our 30+ female artists look for professional development and feedback, and EBeauty’s “Haute Halloween Bash” ticketed fundraising event. The opening gala on October 5th and exhibit will raise money to fund five mentorship programs between established and up-andcoming artists with 25% of proceeds donated to EBeauty—an organization supporting women undergoing treatment for cancer through a wig exchange program. The expansive 27,256-square-foot custom home on two acres at 9004 Congressional Court in Potomac, Maryland, provides the ideal setting for the Washington, DC-area’s top designers to work their magic to create relatable and memorable spaces. The Poolside Oasis by Kim Asner of Country Casual Teak features some of their latest designs including a cabana, while the towering two-story library called A Study in Blue by Kelley Proxmire of Kelley Proxmire, Inc. shows how anything is possible with more than 500 hand-painted blue books that correspond with the Brunschwig & Fils fabric that was the inspiration behind Proxmire’s design. Flanking the library is A Lady’s Retreat by Marika Meyer of Marika Meyer interiors and Textiles with a wall of framed Hermes scarves as well as her own line of fabrics shown throughout the room, and The Study Royale by Lorna Gross of Lorna Gross Interior Design. Gross takes the cobalt blue found in her art and incorporates it into matching chairs. The main floor also includes The Collector’s Cabinet by Josh Hildreth of Josh Hildreth Interiors with another nod to art and the use of organic materials. Hildreth incorporates a hand-painted ceiling, too, by Lisa Tureson of Studio Artistica, who also designed The Hive Family Foyer featuring art by patients at Children’s National Health System, the benefactor of the DC Design House. Mary Amons of Mary Amons Design took one of the smallest spaces, a Powder Room, and creates a captivating corner inspired by Tom Ford’s Nocturnal Animals. A second small but mighty space is the Jewel Box Bar by Allie Mann, Alex Hubbard, Elena Eskandari and Hope Hassell of Case Design/Remodeling, Inc. The Case team painted the existing cabinets and added a new sink, fixture and light to create a totally transformed space with big impact. While Margery Wedderburn of Margery Wedderburn interiors concentrated on the architecture of the home to design the Living Room with two seating areas and whimsical art, Samantha Friedman of Samantha Friedman Interior Designs worked with the expansive kitchen and breakfast room and updated both with fresh paint and wallpaper, window treatments and decorative panels along the island. In addition, The Idealized Family Room by Susan Nelson and Todd Martz of Home on Cameron encourages all to leave electronics at the door and relax in the sunny yellow room with vintage rug and toys sold at their shop. Just past the Living Room is The Gallery by Cindy McClure and Jenna Randolph David of Grossmueller’s Design Consultants. This space connects each wing of the home in style with rich blue walls and a textured ceiling. Another connecting room is The Lounge by J. Allen, Michelle Borden and Mark Borys of Perceptions Interiors. The black walls with chalk lines and red draperies as well as an updated powder room link the back stairs to the upper level.

The second floor includes A Modern Professional’s Stylish Retreat by Keira St. ClaireBowery of Anthony Wilder Design/Build, whose design was centered around the bed and pastel colors including the high gloss ceiling to reflect the natural light streaming into the space. MOUNT VERNON at CHRISTMAS

Religion played a significant part in the observance of the holiday at Mount Vernon as the Washingtons frequently attended church on Christmas day. In 1770, Christmas fell on a Tuesday and after going to nearby Pohick Church in the morning, the family returned to Mount Vernon for dinner. Guests were encouraged to make themselves at home and take part in typical seasonal activities such as foxhunting. One of Martha Washington’s cookbooks included a recipe for Christmas pie, a savory pastry including turkey, goose, pigeon, and chicken, baked and spiced with salt, black pepper, nutmeg and cloves. As described by George Washington’s correspondence, diaries and cash accounts, Christmas at Mount Vernon followed a typical pattern for the region and time period. Today, 1 million visitors pass through the mansion each year, but Washington himself hosted as many as 677 guests at the Mansion in one year, in 1798. The crowds came, particularly at Christmas.

Everybody loves the holidays! Except sometimes your kids. You probably think that I’m crazy because everybody really does love the holidays. Right? The truth is, there are a lot of things that make kids dislike them. But, compromising will make it a lot better and more fun. It’s really nice to have a little wiggle room! by Louise Jones One reason that makes kids not like holidays is because they don’t get to wear what they want to wear. A family that I know has four girls and they all have to wear matching clothes. The girls don’t like not being able to choose what they want to wear, and they hate looking all alike. A good compromise for holiday clothes is picking out several outfits first and then let your child pick one from that group. That way, you can ultimately decide what they wear but, they get to help make part of the decision. Another idea is that you pick what they wear to an event, but they get to change as soon as you leave. Honestly, even if it’s just a couple of minutes it makes a big difference. Another reason that might be tough for your kids during the holidays is going to so many different events and parties. To make it better and easier for them, sometimes you can let them take a friend with them. It’s a lot more fun when they have a buddy to hang out with. They could bring something to do or play with. For example, your kids could take a book, board game, or an electronic gadget. You could have them only play with it for a certain amount of time. Also, you can let your kids have a break and not make them go at all, especially if you know it’s really not going to be fun at all for them. Kids don’t always enjoy holidays because they don’t get to eat the food that they like. A lot of kids get grumpy and upset when there is nothing that they like to eat. Or, they pick it apart and play with it. To solve that problem, you can let your child have one food that they like even if it doesn’t fit in with the rest of the meal. If you do let them have one thing that they like, they should also agree to try something new, even if they have tried it before. My Mom says that it takes eight times of trying something before your taste buds know if they like it or not. I bet I have tried mushrooms only five or six times and it is working. I’m starting to like them, finally! It makes me feel really bad when we are super busy around holidays. Before those crazy holidays kick in, talk to your kids about compromising and make sure they know that it does not have to be that way this year so they don’t have anxiety or get angry. Don’t forget to let them know that they will have some choices and that they will get to make some decisions by themselves. Remember, let your kids have a choice about their clothes, the places you all go, and the food you eat during holidays. Though you might not always be able to compromise, try your best, and give them some wiggle room. And don’t forget to have a wonderful time during the holidays! I know I definitely will!

Fun Thanksgiving Host/Hostess Gifts

THANKSGIVING IS UPON US! Quite possibly the favorite holiday of most Americans, many of us will be having a traditional turkey dinner at the homes of family and friends. While we are always excited to share the day with those near and dear, we are not necessarily excited about figuring out the perfect host/hostess gift to bring along to the affair. Nothing says “I-didn’t-reallythink-about-it-much” and just stopped off at the store on my way enroute like a bottle of wine – regardless of its vintage – or a bouquet of flowers that are already wilting. This year, go bigger or you may need to go home. Try out one of these and marvel at the result! PERSONALIZED COASTERS Embellished cork coasters are a personal, practical hostess gift (protecting tables from guests’ frosty glasses). Create a set for your hostess, tie together with ribbon and give with a bottle of booze. GARDEN IN A BOX A portable garden, which contains the ingredients for herbal tea your hostess can enjoy again and again. VINTAGE BOOKS Unusual out-of-print cooking and gardening books are fun and thoughtful gifts to bring any host or hostess of a party. SALT, SUGAR, AND BREAD Salt for spice, sugar for sweetness, and bread for sustenance is a traditional Jewish gift that transcends boundaries and makes a lovely present. HOMEMADE JAM Give the gift of a bottle of homemade jam or applesauce. Easy to make, it’s thoughtful, practical and delicious.

MIXOLOGY TIPSY TEMPTATIONS

BATTER’S BOX Glassware: Rocks Glass Method: Combine ingredients into a punch bowl, stir to mix, add ice to properly chill and dilute, and then garnish. Serve as needed over ice in a Rocks glass. *Non-Alcoholic Apple Cider can be substituted for a lower ABV cocktail. Ingredients: 2 Parts Jameson Black Barrel 2 Parts Hard Apple Cider* 1 Part Fresh Lemon Juice 2/3 Part Finest Call Prickly Pear Syrup 2/3 Part Cointreau Garnish: Apple Slices It’s fall - the leaves are turning and baseball is in the air! October is playoff season, capped with the World Series at the end of the month. For those special days when friends and family gather, kick it up a notch with a Game Day apple cider punch! For the punch base, use Jameson Irish Whiskey. Classic and smooth, yet full of fall flavors, the Jameson brings notes of caramel and baking spice. The perfect “beer” pairing here is one of America’s early favorites, Hard Apple Cider. Crisp and refreshing, it gives the punch that little bit “extra”. A little lemon and a little Cointreau work in tandem just like a great pitcher and catcher duo. A touch of some fall extra spice is added by the Prickly Pear syrup, which is rich, yet has just the right baking spice notes. When the team wins, it’s a good day; when they win, with a great cocktail, it’s an even better night. This fall, kick the playoffs into high gear and get the crowd ready with an exciting trip to the Batter’s Box!

SLAP SHOT Glassware: Rocks Glass Method: Combine ingredients into a punch bowl, stir to mix, add ice to properly chill and dilute, and then garnish. Serve as needed over ice in a Rocks glass. *For Maple Syrup: Combine 3 parts maple syrup with 1 part hot water and stir to integrate. Ingredients: 1.5 oz. Absolut Mandrin 2 Parts Jameson Caskmates Stout 2 Parts Port City Porter 1 Part Maple Syrup*

2/3 Parts Coffee 2 Dashes Bitter Truth Spiced Chocolate Bitters (2 dashes per every 1.5 oz. of Jameson Caskmates Stout) Garnish: Lemon Twist As fall enters its throws, and as baseball comes to an end, hockey season begins. The intensity of hockey is little matched in the sports world today. So, when the crew is over, match them with a cocktail that can match the intensity of biggest plays. The starting line for this cocktail is formed by its two main components, beer and a shot of whiskey. This is then anchored by Jameson Caskmates Stout edition and traditional porter style beer. Next, chocolate and maple syrup come into play. The roasted hops note from the porter and the flavors of the whiskey are enhanced by natural flavors already present, acting as a little sweet and bitter duo to bring balance to the team. Finally, much like the goalie, is coffee. Keeping the punch awake and active, the coffee not only acts at the last piece of the puzzle, but adds the necessary bitters to full bring this line together. A little sweet, a little sour, a little bitter, a little intense, all with a legendary captain, this line up comes ready to bring the excitement to game day!

HAIL MARY Glassware: Collins Glass Method: Combine ingredients into a punch bowl, stir to mix, add ice to properly chill and dilute and then garnish. Serve as needed over ice in a Collins glass. *For Honey syrup combine 2 parts honey with 1 part hot water and stir till properly integrated. Ingredients: 1 Part Jameson Caskmates IPA 1 Part Regatta Ginger Beer 1 ½ Parts Heavy Sea’s Loose Cannon IPA 1/3 Part Honey Syrup* 1/3 Part Grapefruit Juice Garnish: Grapefruit Peel As fall comes to a close, football season only intensifies. Football games can be important gatherings, requiring a true classic cocktail with a few extra trick-plays up its sleeve. This cocktail is based on the classic Shandygraff cocktail (IPA, Lemon, Orange Liqueur and Ginger Beer,) however it calls for a few additions and substitutions. The newest member of the Jameson family, the Jameson Caskmates IPA, is called to take the field. The finishing of the whiskey in the IPA barrels adds a back end smoothness much like the stout edition. To pair with the whiskey and the beer, the grapefruit juice is substituted for lemon juice, while the ginger beer adds the spice to take the flavor of the cocktail up to the level needed. Ready and set, when only one play can win the game, having the best game day punch will surely set the tone for a successful Hail Mary!

HEALTH & WELLNESS YOUR BEST SELF

WHAT A YEAR 2017 has been! by Jeanine Finelli

With so many major upheavals around the globe, perhaps many of us are left with a craving for simpler times. From our nation’s capital and our national safety, to Mother Nature’s fury, events this year have shaken us to the core and caused us to re-evaluate or reinforce our stance on things. Division is apparent, but luckily, not in everything. In honor of traditional holiday threads that are woven through the holidays of our past, let us revisit the many things where we seem to come together. There is an old saying that states…the more things change, the more they stay the same. While various slants on this saying hold true, let’s look at the bright side of those perpetual gifts that keep on giving. Being healthy includes making clean and healthful food choices, regular exercise, and finding ways to nurture our souls and spirits without food. SNOWFLAKES – Who doesn’t appreciate the delicate and unique beauty of a snowflake? If you can’t catch them on your tongue, you can still enjoy them this season. Take out the paper, scissors, glitter and glue, and make some to hang from the doorway or tape onto the windows. Maybe, all you need is a snowflake painted on your nail at your next mani/pedi. Tiny touches go a long way in spreading seasonal cheer. Plus, these touches are so darn cute! HOLIDAY LOVE STORY MOVIES – Catch one on TV while you’re folding the laundry or baking a family favorite. Cheesy chic-flick you say? I know…...the stories are so predictable. But, with the world the way it is today, I’ll take a harmless, predictable, cheesy movie any day of the week because 2017 has shown us the devastating side of real life. Go ahead……it’s OK to escape to a fairy tale where justice always prevails, the cocoa is hot with marshmallows, the snow is perfectly white and so are Prince Charming’s teeth!

CANDLES AND DIFFUSERS are perfect for scents of cinnamon, pine, vanilla and peppermint to fill up your home or office. Soy and beeswax candles scented with essential oils are a better choice over conventional candles that can leave harmful toxins in the air, carpets and walls. Diffusers are lovely and, when quality essential oils are blended with water, a tranquil steady stream of heavenly relaxation will surround your soul and lift your spirit. BIRDHOUSE - By placing a birdhouse outside a window, you’ll enjoy watching winter’s furry friends have a snack …on you! It’s a great feeling to know these little guys are feeding well when winter can be relentless. Imagine having to hunt for your food everyday!

this season to give love and receive love……and who knows, maybe if we keep that thought at the center of what we take on, more goodness will come from it. Think globally, act locally. Wishing you the happiest of holidays!

CHARITABLE GIVING - Since it feels so good to give and share, how can you do more of this during the holidays? Can you get a “2fer” by cleaning out your closets and donating outgrown clothing to those in need? Does your local soup kitchen or food pantry need donations or distribution help? Where is there a need, and can it be filled by your acts of love? Maybe we aren’t so divided after all. Simple pleasures never go out of style, so let’s hold onto them and share them with our children and friends. Let us all come together

POINSETTIAS - Instead of picking up just one for a hostess gift, pick up two and keep one for yourself! With water and sun, these Mexican hearty beauties can last for months. And, those gorgeous, deep red leaves can brighten up a gloomy room or your gloomy mood.

STYLIST FASHION FOWARD THE SLIP DRESS The slip dress continues its reign into the holiday season. Whether it is a silhouette with flair such as a ruffled hemline or a true slip in the traditional sense of the word – wear it in style! RED SILK DRESS Who says that Santa has the market on red during the holiday season? A deep red silk dress feels both sexy and festive for every party that you attend this season… SEQUIN IT UP No, not a full-on sequin dress. Try incorporating the beads into accessories – whether a handbag or a cute headband – it’ll dazzle you up.

MENS | SOPHISTICATED TOPCOAT If you’re looking for a stylish way to mix things up, switch out your blazer for a sleek wool coat. Then, keep everything sharp and minimal underneath. MENS | A SUIT FOR THE OFFICE When it comes time to suit up for that office party, the best move is a subtle pattern. It adds a bit of visual texture while keeping things professional. SUEDE BOOTS Accessories and footwear are not just the domain of women’s fashion. This holiday season, don a pair of suede boots – the hottest footwear trend of the fall – and trip the parties fantastic. 42

MONEY & FINANCE MONEY SENSE

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR CREDIT AND IDENTITY By Marc S. Schliefer, CFP® President and Financial Planner

44

JOHN ERIC HOME

I am writing this article a week after the big Equifax security breach was announced. This is not the first security breach that has happened to consumers. A few years ago, the U.S. Government Office of Personnel Management was hacked and hundreds of thousands of people had their information taken. The worst part was that people with security clearances had all of their private information stolen. The government offered credit monitoring for those people impacted. The question is “can you do more than just monitor your credit?” Should you freeze your credit? Should you buy other credit monitoring services? Will that prevent someone from using your stolen information to try to apply for credit, obtain medical treatment, file a false tax return or request a tax refund? These, along with many other possibilities, will cost you time and money to get corrected. The first thing that you should do is to sign up for the free credit monitoring that the company with the data breach has offered. Usually, it’s free for the first year. You need to make sure it’s easy to cancel after the initial free period. During the first year, take the time to explore other services and compare the benefits. If the service has been easy to work with and has alerted you to possible security breaches, you may want to continue with the coverage after the initial free period. If your data is compromised by another

company, typically, they will also offer free credit monitoring. If that’s the case, sign up for the free service with the other company. There is no limit on how many companies can monitor your credit. In this case, you need to make sure that you are aware when the free service ends, especially if there’s another free option. A big question that we get all the time is whether you should freeze your credit and what does that mean. To do a credit freeze, you need to notify the three credit bureaus, Equifax, TransUnion and Experian, of your intent to freeze your credit. They may charge $10 to $20 to freeze your credit. If you are a victim of identity theft, the fees are usually waived. The credit freeze will not allow the credit bureaus to release your credit data without your permission. This is good, because people attempting to steal your credit will not be able to access your credit file. This means that most banks and financial institutions will not be able to extend credit until given access to your credit file. If your credit is frozen, this is not possible. However, the downside of a credit freeze is that if you are applying for credit, it can slow down the process. For example, during the mortgage application process, the mortgage company will sometimes run your credit at the start the process, then update your credit report when you’re ready to settle. You would have

to unfreeze your credit and either keep it open until the mortgage is complete or freeze and unfreeze your credit at the beginning and end of the process. If you have renewable lines of credit, banks usually run your credit once a year. Because of this, you’ll be doing a fair amount of freezing and unfreezing your credit. A lot of times, we, as financial advisors, look at a person’s use of credit and help them determine best course of action. If you have any questions on what to do, please send me an email at marcs@ equityplanning.com or call me at 301-652-8702

BUZZ DAILY DC

LIFE OF RILEY A new luxury hotel opened in Adams Morgan and, it has nothing to do with the long-awaited (and potentially subsidized) Line hotel in an old church on Euclid Street NW. Rockville-based dog hotel and spa Life of Riley launched its second location at 2222 18th St. NW. The site used to house Sawah Diner and Mamma Mia Pizza. It’s located right across the street from the freshly refurbished Marie Reed Elementary School in one of the District’s most dog- (and family-) friendly neighborhoods. Not one’s typical kennel, Life of Riley will feature 30 overnight suites for dogs of all shapes and breeds, upstairs playrooms separated by pet size and a few grooming stations. The suites are made with Italian tile and Calcutta marble; the beds inside are handcrafted. The business also offers daytime boarding. Anxious dog owners at work or on vacation can watch their fur babies online through live cameras placed around the establishment, as well as GoPros that dog-walkers will clip onto harnesses. Group walks will take place every two hours. (WCP)

THE DINER IN ADAMS MORGAN Jerry Seinfeld and Dave Chappelle visited The Diner in Adams Morgan — camera crew in tow. Recording an episode of “Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee” there was a small glitch at the end — the car wouldn’t start. Two crew members for the show pushed the gold Citroen coupe down 18th Street, attempting to pop the clutch to get the engine going, but finally had to resort to breaking out jumper cables to get the car started so the comedians could drive away. Before pulling off, someone shouted at the comedian whose car window was closest to the sidewalk: “Love you, Dave.” Chappelle responded: “Hey, love you man!” (WTOP)

TRADER JOE’S Trader Joe’s fans on Capitol Hill will soon no longer have to schlep outside their neighborhood for peanut butter pretzels, soy chorizo or assorted frozen appetizers. A new location of the quirky grocer — just a few blocks from Eastern Market in the Hine School redevelopment at 750 Pennsylvania Ave. SE — will open Sept. 29. The weekendlong event will include live music, giveaways, tastings and ceremonial lei cutting. The nearly 13,000-square-foot location with underground parking is the first to open in the District outside the city’s Northwest quadrant. The grocer plans to open a new store in the Union Market neighborhood at 1240 Fourth St. NE, later this year. (WBJ)

MONTGOMERY COUNTY HOMES The median price of a home sold in Montgomery County hit $425,000, the highest figure for August in the past 10 years, according to a regional Realtors group. Half of the homes sold were on the market no more than 21 days, GCAAR reported, while the average home was on the market for about 45 days. (Post)

MULLED WINE Although, normally associated with the holidays, it doesn’t need to be at a seasonal party to enjoy a cup of mulled wine. Who can resist the warm and spicy libation? If you are traveling to any of these places during the fall, make sure not to miss their local offerings. And, of course, to take in their sensational Christmas markets.

50

JOHN ERIC HOME

DRESDEN, GERMANY NOVEMBER 24 – DECEMBER 24, 2017 Ever wonder who was the first to drink mulled wine, or ‘glühwein’ as they call it in Germany? According to the great-sounding Schloss Wackerbarth winery, Saxony’s oldest sparkling wine manufacturer, the recipe dates back to December, 1834. August Raugraf of Wackerbarth was standing in the baroque castle at Schloss Wackerbarth and feeling the cold - he started looking for a special drink to make the cold disappear and to warm his “body and heart”. He mixed saffron, anise and pomegranate into white wine and heated it up. VILNIUS, LITHUANIA NOVEMBER 26 – DECEMBER 29, 2017 Lithuania’s capital is fairly new to the Christmas market scene with the ‘Kalėdos Sostinėje’ starting in 2012. It fills Cathedral Square (Katedros Aikštė) with 48 wooden stalls. The products for sale are mostly locally made gifts, such as woollen slippers, ceramic candle holders, glass and jewelry, plus Christmas decorations and festive foods. These include roasted chestnuts, poppy seed cake, gingerbread, artisan breads and mulled wine (karstas vynas). The recipe of the wine is supposed to be a big secret, but it involves red wine, honey and spices. TRONDHEIM, NORWAY DECEMBER 9-18, 2017 In the market square (Torvet), you will find the usual mix of local crafts and local food, charity concerts, children’s entertainment and horse sleigh rides. The local products here, of course, also include dried reindeer meat, moose burgers and beautiful Christmas trees from the woods in Trøndelag. This far north, it can be a bit nippy out so, the best place to enjoy the market is from the ‘big lavvu’ (a Sami tepee), where you can sit around an open fire, eat local delicacies and sip on tankards of warm wine. The mulled wine, Aronia, from the local brewery Klostergården, contains red wine, vanilla beans, cloves, star anise and cinnamon sticks. VIENNA, AUSTRIA NOVEMBER 12 – DECEMBER 24, 2017 There are about 20 markets in the city, but the main ones are those that have impressive historic buildings for backdrops – chiefly the one at the Rathausplatz in front of the neo-Gothic City Hall. It has more than 150 stalls selling wooden houses, puppets, gingerbread hearts, leather clothing and woollen hats. Inside the City Hall, on the ground floor, there is an area where children can learn to make Christmas cookies or candles. You can also listen to international choirs singing carols there. The nearby Rathauspark has carousel rides and trees covered in lights. A great place to drink glühwein is in the narrow streets of Spittelberg, a revitalized heritage district behind the Volkstheater. You pay your deposit for a mug at the top, wind your way through stalls selling objects d’art, ceramics, warm jumpers, rugs and jewelry – buying glühwein when you get the urge – and collect your deposit when you return the mug at the end of the lanes. A typical Austrian glühwein mixes red wine, water, cinnamon sticks, sugar, oranges and cloves.
