Mission
Architecture echoes the truth concerning who we are as individuals and communities. As the built environment actively defines our behavior, interactions, and understanding, it consequently contributes to the thesis of society. Through these feats of design and engineering, we express what we value most and how we hope to be remembered. Whether intended or not, a building elicits a response from each individual who comes into contact with it. Some of these structures will be observed in the blink of an eye, while others will define a city. Our charge as architects is to create beautiful environments in which people can actively immerse themselves in the human condition while being aware of not only the grand gestures, but also the most simple details. These compositions should, above all else, allow those within the walls to experience the profound. The layers of a building should be constantly revealing themselves to those who interact with it; an edifice should not merely be the sudden crash of a cymbal, but rather the resonating hum of a chord. This demanding challenge falls upon our shoulders and we grapple with it one project at a time. As architects, we must bear many responsibilities, but none are greater than that of exulting the finest qualities of humanity.

Contents Urban Family Housing A detailed design of high-density residences with excellent spatial layouts and a focus on sustainable design such as recycled chain link fence posts utilized as exterior shading devices.
Eranos Institute of Portland This project focused on the poetics of design as well as how to create a truly compelling and inviting space that touches visitors whether they linger or merely take a glimpse.
Library for the Body & Mind The design process is the driver of this project. A playful adaptation of the mundane and ordinary fused with excitement and innovation led to a unique design that expresses the building’s identity.
The Wet Window Here, a comparison of the thermal performance of concrete and water as applied in a trombe wall led to the notion that water could serve as a trombe wall window without impeding system performance.
Light, Wind, & Water Using photorealistic scale models and full scale prototypes, multiple devices were designed to enliven spaces while also improving thermal gain resistance.
“Alluminaire While not intended to be a primary source of light, this design strengthens focal points and enhances experience through its distinct yet restrained presence in a variety of circumstances.
Artwork Beauty cannot be ignored, and all too often the demands of clients and deadlines lead to the creation of uninspiring and undesirable spaces. Art allows a designer to remain focused.
Trinity Chapel A renovation project for a school in Napa, California that celebrates the transcendent and rejuvenates the soul as a center for worship.

In ancient Greece, the name “eranos” meant a banquet at which each guest presented an intellectual gift: a song, a poem, a speech. The Eranos Institute is dedicated to the understanding of science, the humanities, psychology, and religion.

the new functions of the library are reflected in the structure
With so many libraries throughout the country starting new programs to introduce youth to literature amidst swarms of technology, it is essential that these endeavors are equally as innovative.
Wholistic Approach
• Celebrate man’s dual nature • Library associated with mind • It should also nurture the body with new services and classes
Innovative Strategies
• Typical building materials modified and used in new ways • Creative environmental solutions
truth
Community
• Large open foyer also serves as community event center • Located across from school • Adjacent to multiple bus lines

The Wet Window Presented at American Solar Energy Society Conference | 2009
The drawback to a trombe wall is that windows take away from the overall performance of the system or windows are omitted and therefore there is no view to the outside. If a building has a beautiful vista from its southern exposure, then a trombe wall will not be a viable option.
Water vs Concrete
• Uniform testing of thermal insulation values of water and concrete • Multiple tests with simulated interior air space exposed to heat lamp
Results
• Water performed similarly to concrete • Only negligible differences in performance
The project was done in conjunction with Harlan Justice,Todd Palmer, and Aiden Humphry.

1. Moire Pattern
detail
actual space that was modeled
Much of the built environment is stagnant and lacks vitality. Man is meant to be in his natural surroundings yet as a society, we spend over ninety percent of our lives in buildings. This project looked at animating spaces like waiting rooms with light, wind, and water by incorporating these elements into two unique passive devices.

2. Cascade Shade
responsibility
1. Moire Pattern • Scale testing done with photorealistic model for accuracy • Light and wind create patterns in material 2. Cascade Shade • Rain is stored and travels down the full scale shading device • Water plays with sunlight
devices that do more than just shade, they strengthen the experiences within
These devices serve the dual purpose of providing needed shading and dynamic experience.

studies of practical applications in various spaces
The nature of the LED light is a small, but powerful source of light. The “Alluminaire” celebrates the LED with well proportioned components of high-tech materials that sculpt the light into a dramatic moment.
Materials
• Perforated aluminum gives the light a contemporary look • Cork continues the feeling of lightweight, small elements
Performance

Trinity Chapel Interior Renovation | Napa, CA | 2009
beauty
the traditional pattern from historical churches
responsibility
Trinity Grammar & Prep in Napa, California selected me to redesign the interior of the school’s chapel. The existing conditions are both dated and in disrepair. The client desired a beautiful space that is appropriate for worship while remaining cost-effective.
Definition
• Convert this generic gathering space into a Catholic chapel • Create layers and hierarchy
Low Cost
• Reusing as much material as possible • Introducing inexpensive fixes
existing images show a dimly lit, stark room is no place for a house of worship
The school has put the project on hold in the wake of the economic downturn, but the plans remain in place as they look to improve the aesthetics of the campus.
