Catholic Mum
Popular writer, author and Catholic blogger Lisa Hendey tells us why she wrote her new book on saints for mothers, and why so many readers feel a connection with her writing.
from Blog to Book and Beyond
An article by Lisa Hendey
When I look back at my faith life and my professional life over the past decade, it is amazing to see the intersection between the work I do and the impact it has had upon my personal spirituality. Indeed, my website www.CatholicMom.com started as a direct response to my own need: it was my job to raise my sons in the faith, to be “domestic church”, and to nurture not only my own personal relationship with God, but theirs as well. While the website has given me a daily platform for learning about and sharing my love for Christ and his Church, the publication of my two books has deepened this in a way I never could have imagined possible. My first book, The Handbook for Catholic Moms: Nurturing Your Heart, Mind, Body and Soul, was written to encourage moms (and truthfully myself) to care for ourselves through emotionally, in our work, physically and spiritually.
GP_Newsletter June 2012_TXT_PPS.indd 1
We have a tendency to give so fully to those around us that at times we neglect our own self-care in the process. The beautiful tools of our Catholic faith enable us to build a life that is rich, fulfilling and oriented towards service and love. Whenever I meet women (and, believe it or not, men too) who have read my books, I am always struck by the personal connection they feel to the material we’ve covered. For example, Sarah Reinhard, a young mother of three recently shared, “When you read A Book of Saints for Catholic Moms, you’ll experience the saints as real people. They stubbed their toes and struggled to keep their voices down. They weren’t perfect...and that gives all of us hope! You’ll meet saints who are new to you and revisit known-forever saints in a new light. Keeping this kind of company is sure to rub off on us at least a little, don’t you think?” Lisa’s new book, A Book of Saints for Catholic Moms is now available. See page 6.

The Heart of Christian Faith
If the belief that the world is transparent is central to Ignatian spirituality, and with it the constant reflection that God works in the depths of everything, this book shows that Ignatius saw the world as very ‘user friendly’. For him, every part of it, from the stars in the heavens to the flowers of the field, elevated his mind and heart to God. ISBN 9781921511796
The author describes the drastic changes or revolutions that have occurred in the interpretation of the Bible during his own lifetime. The author uses his own experiences to describe these revolutions and to reflect on what consequences they have had for his own life-story. The first revolution was the introduction of the historical-critical approach. The Bible was interpreted as historical in a broad sense, not in all its details. In a Roman university the author later found that this broad historical verification of the Bible became more and more problematic. The second revolution is described as the Bible as Literature methodology. This approach puts aside history and examines the Bible as a clever and subtle literary document which has controlled religious belief and practice but cannot be substantiated as historical fact. There was a third revolution. Within the secular university scene, the author became involved in the study of anthropology and sociology. Judaism and Christianity were seen as religions amongst other religions; their sacred writings were seen as sacred writings alongside others. The new approach forces him to rethink the history of Israel, the relevance of the Hebrew Scriptures and Judaism itself; he also has to rethink the history of Jesus, the relevance of the Christian Scriptures and Christianity. This life journey should be of interest to those working in the fields of biblical and religion studies.

After resigning from the Catholic priesthood in 1972, he returned to the university scene and took out a Masters in Ancient History at Melbourne University and a PhD in Education at Adelaide University. He ended his career at the University of South Australia as the Professor of Religion and Education and the Dean of Research Degrees. ‘God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him’ (1 John 4:16). Anthony Kelly, CSsR, takes this phrase as a concise and profound expression and unpacks it for thinking Christians today. He explores seven ideas that are necessarily implied in the love that God is – the Trinitarian terms, Father, Son and Holy Spirit; the cross and resurrection as events within the paschal mystery; the church as the revelation of God’s love being worked out in history; and finally, the ultimate hope for eternal life and heaven itself. Albert Einstein is often quoted as saying that ‘God does not play dice’, claiming an orderly and predictable structure to the universe. It’s a challenge not only for nuclear physicists but also for Christian theologians who work to explain God’s providence for the world. Education ” intro needed to replace this text, Catholic schools and colleges are to preserve their true mission and their religious integrity in the face of secularism and the colonising power of ‘national economic requirements’, then they must possess a distinctive cultural heart which is an authentic Catholic Curriculum.
Who he was, what he did, why it matters If Catholic schools and colleges are to preserve their true mission and their religious integrity in the face of secularism and the colonising power of ‘national economic requirements’, then they must possess a distinctive cultural heart which is an authentic Catholic Curriculum. Drawing upon the wisdom of theology, missiology, sociology, history, philosophy and anthropology, the authors of this impressive text have produced a major educational resource to show Catholic educators how this could be achieved.
This is a landmark publication, of great value, not only to educators in Australia, but also internationally.
Professor Gerald Grace
Director Centre for Research and Development in Catholic Education (CRDCE), University of London.
A learned and thoroughly researched study, this book should fruitfully enlighten and encourage discussion of curriculum in Catholic schools.
An excellent book that combines intricate knowledge and understanding of updated curriculum thinking with piercing insight into the challenges implied by such thinking for Catholic schools. The book challenges a range of facile approaches to being a Catholic school in a public setting, including that the Catholic school can ignore its wider public context or that being Catholic means simply adding a layer of RE to an essentially public enterprise. The book goes to the heart of the justification of Catholic schooling by illustrating a range of differences that might be notable in a distinctively Catholic Curriculum. In a day and age of much talk about Catholicity and Catholic Identity, the D’Orsas make it plain that there is no simple formula, nor can it ever be viable that there is only one way of being Catholic. ‘Catholic Curriculum’ is a complex term that can only be meaningfully applied in the real context of a multitude of societal influences and educational stakeholders. The book’s stated task is to reframe the conversation around Catholic Curriculum, a goal well achieved in my view

He provides leadership in pastoral planning in the Diocese of Sale, is extensively involved in the reviews of Catholic school systems and is a senior lecturer at the Broken Bay Institute specialising in leadership and mission and a visiting lecturer at Yarra Theological Union. Who was – and is – Jesus of Nazareth? A multitude of different voices and centuries of tradition have made it difficult for us to see Jesus the way his own contemporaries saw him, and to understand him in the way that he wanted to be understood. This book places Jesus firmly within his own context, and shows how startlingly relevant he is to our own day as well. Professor Gerald O’Collins S.J. Vatican II Fifty Years of Evolution and Revolution in the Catholic Church

Yves Congar OP, was one of the most important and influential theologians of the twentieth century. Much of this influence came as a result of his role as theological advisor to the bishops who participated at the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965). After working under a cloud of ecclesiastical censure and suspicion in the decade prior to its start, Congar was, from beginning to end, an influential day-to-day participant in the council’s work. Reception and implementation in the Australian Church
This book marks the 50th anniversary of the convening of Vatican II. The result is a fascinating examination of not only how Australian Catholics responded to the changes and challenges of the council upon the way that they worshipped, but also how their personal relationship with their God was refashioned. Preface by Gerald O’Collins SJ and a foreword by Archbishop Philip Wilson.
Keys to the Council
As the year 2000 approached, Blessed John Paul II, who had himself participated in the Second Vatican Council, referred to it as ‘the gift of the Spirit to the Church at the end of the second millennium’. Looking towards the coming millennium he asked to what extent the fruits of the council could be seen in the church. This year, 2012, fifty years after the council opened, is a good opportunity to reflect again on that question.
Same Call, Different Men uses fresh data in which 900 US priests shared attitudes and stories about the challenges of ministry, with fewer ordinations and larger parishes, increasingly multicultural laity, collaboration with lay leaders and personal reflections on the sexual abuse issue. It also relates the many satisfactions of being a priest, one who brings Christ to others and who is invited into many profound moments of individual lives.

or Catholics the celebration of the Mass is central to the expression of their faith. It is celebrated thousands of times a day in many places, in many languages, by many, many people and has been celebrated every day for centuries. It has many names and a variety of cultural guises. It means different things to different people. “For some it is a meal. For some it is a sacrifice. For some it is a ritual act, sacred and set apart. Others like to emphasise the community aspect – the community gathering together, very conscious of one another. For some it is a deeply personal prayer. For others it is a sacramental celebration embracing the entire world. For some its very essence is expressed in the coming together (the communion) of those present. For others, it is the moment to celebrate the sacredness of life in joy and gratitude. For some worshippers it is a celebration of a reconciliation which forgives and unites. For others, unity and reconciliation are pre-requisites for its proper celebration. Some celebrate it once a year. Others celebrate it four times a year. Some celebrate it every Sunday and for others it is a daily event of thanksgiving and grace.” (From the Introduction) In A Friendly Guide to the Mass Tony Doherty opens up the treasures of the Mass and through story, humour, history and colourful imagery he offers us an insight into the heart of this ritual

Working for the National Catholic Rural Movement 1959–1961 Kevin Peoples Garratt Publishing
Author Kevin Peoples was a leader in the YCW in the 1950s and his book celebrates both the critical role played by young workers in the Church and their world in the 1950s, and the genius of Joseph Cardijn whose ‘See Judge and Act’ technique of formation integrated the spiritual with the secular. Peoples was an organiser for the NCRM from 1959–1961. Within the narrative frame of his own involvement, the author shows how Santamaria’s charisma and authoritarian character continuously subverted the NCRM’s aims as an official form of Catholic Action. Written by Phyllis Zagano Garratt Publishing
Louis DeThomasis FSC Garratt Publishing
In this insightful, provocative and hopeful new book, Br Louis points to a way of unravelling the quandary by returning to the church’s historic belief in tradition – ‘the lived experience of the faithful’ – as a source of ongoing revelation and renewal. This is not an attack by someone intent on bringing down the church but rather a wake-up call for the church itself to recognise and embrace globalisation, diversity and democratisation, and begin to rebuild what DeThomasis calls koinonia or communion. This book makes an important contribution to the international conversation on the place of women in ministry. The essays are both readable and infused with research on the restoration of ordained women deacons. Dr Zagano has clearly scoped a legitimate area of discussion and is providing invaluable assistance to the Church moving forward to a renewed future. ISBN 978 192194 618 9

NEW! This Time of

NEW! Jesus and
the Natural World
Written by Frank O’Loughlin
Author Frank O’Loughlin argues that the decline in attendance and numbers of those entering religious life in the Western world can be attributed to a shift from Christianity to pluralism which originated in Western Europe. “We are dealing with a changing situation which goes beyond the church while affecting it radically”. O’Loughlin, a senior priest in the Melbourne Archdiocese, argues that the resultant social, cultural and political changes have enormous religious repercussions at a time when people are also troubled by the church’s handling of numerous crises including the sexual abuse crisis, pastoral inadequacy and even pastoral failure. NEW! Empowering
Young People
Developing a vision for a Catholic Youth Ministry
Written by Denis Edwards
“Ecological conversion … is the radical change of mind and heart that leads to a deeper love and respect for all creatures as having their own integrity before God: it involves change to a sustainable lifestyle, to sustainable patterns of production and consumption and to sustainable economic and political choices.” If the good news is that many people around the globe have begun to recognise that we are called to a new way of being on Earth, how can we be sure that this is congruous with the message of Jesus in the gospels? In this new book Denis Edwards encourages us as Christians to wholeheartedly embrace ecological conversation and to connect with people around the globe in their deepening commitment to the survival of life on earth.
Christian Fini OFM
“If we are truly the body of Christ with many parts, we have an obligation to include young people because the church community…is incomplete without them.” The young people around us are a gift to our church, not just as the keepers of our beliefs and traditions, but also our calling to live the values of the gospels. Yet reaching the hearts and minds of these people and keeping them engaged and involved is not always easy. This book will ultimately challenge every Catholic community to welcome young people.
From an easy-to-understand history of the universe and the Earth, the evolution of life on this planet and our role in ensuring its future, Edwards shows that stewardship is pivotal in the Christian message for the world, and that the process of conversion includes a responsibility that all creation is a precious gift that is to be loved, respected and protected.
The invitation to actively participate is the greatest gift that we can offer young people, together with a healthy understanding of what a human being is and a care for that human being and a healthy place where they encounter Jesus Christ. In this new book by Christian Fini, a priest of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate based in Melbourne, we are told that the challenge of every parish community is to find ways to engage young people and to give them a community of which they can be a part.

Sacraments NEW!
So You’re planning a wedding Monsignor Tony Doherty
This book has been written as a simple guide for anyone marrying in a Catholic church. Normally that will be when each partner is Catholic; sometimes one of the parties is not a Catholic. After a few suggestions about the preparation for the ceremony of your marriage the book sets out to explain some of the things Catholics most value in their beliefs. There are chapters about the meaning of Mass, about the place of prayer in our busy lives, about the importance of justice in our faith and, as we believe that marriage is a sacrament, about what we mean when we use the word ‘sacrament’. Kathy Horan provides ten sessions to facilitate your discussions with your child during the preparation time. She links your role to how the gospels portray the way that Mary and Joseph went about preparing Jesus to become a full member of their Jewish community. In doing so, Kathy links the gospel stories to everyday family events and provides an explanation of the meaning of the Mass and how we should approach reception of Eucharist. She provides material for ten sessions: The family at Nazareth Joseph and Mary took Jesus to the Temple Jesus with family and friends Jesus with Martha, Mary and Lazarus at Bethany The Last Supper Jesus continues to be present The Catholic community The shape of the Eucharist (Mass) Called to share Jesus’ mission to the world
Each session includes a summary of the gospel passage, a reflection time, a prayer time, and a suitable prayer. You will also find an explanation of the symbols used and common prayers of the Church. In addition, you can download free children’s activity sheets, parish invitations and prayer services related to these themes. See www.johngarratt.com.au and click on sacraments.
