North Sussex CAMRA Branch Pub of the Month for July 2017 is Ounce & Ivy Bush, East Grinstead The Ounce & Ivy is one of three Wetherspoons in the branch. This pub’s name recalls one of East Grinstead’s former inns and the coat of arms of the Sackville family. The closure of the Dorset’s Head allowed the Cat inn, also on High Street, to change its name to the Dorset Arms. The Cat had been called The Ounce & Ivy Bush, an ounce being a wild cat species and an ivy bush a symbol denoting a high-class inn. Robert Sackville, Second Earl of Dorset, founded Sackville College almshouses, on High Street, in 1605. The college is East Grinstead’s most important historic building.
The pub boasts 8 pumps, 4 of which are for their regular ales from Greene King, Sharps and Adnams, while the other four are for guest ales which can come from all over the country and include special ales brewed for Wetherspoons other with the collaboration between two breweries.
Like all Wetherspoons it host regular Beer festivals throughout the year as well as a Cider Festival, Real Cider is served directly from the fridge. CAMRA members can use there discount vouchers to receive money of all ales and ciders. There are regularly beers from Sussex breweries and the pub has LocAle accreditation as well as Cask Marque.
The food to the regular Wetherspoons fayre, with specials on each night of the week, including the much-loved Curry Club on Thursdays. Currently under the management of Rosie and with Andy managing the beer you will always find a warm welcome and a good pint
