Changes to FareShare’s Breakfast Club offer

L

ast school year FareShare London may have provided you with breakfast cereal as part of the Kellogg’s Give A Child A Breakfast campaign. This year FareShare London would like to introduce you to the full FareShare Membership which can provide a wide range of food suitable for your breakfast and after school provisions. FareShare is an award winning, UK wide charity fighting hunger and food waste. We redistribute good, surplus food to frontline charities, community groups and organisations supporting vulnerable people within their local communities. FareShare reaches over 320 towns and cities, providing food for 18.3 million meals a year

and supporting 211,565 people every week. In London this translates to over 250 organisations who help to feed over 23,000 people each week. By ensuring good food is not wasted we turn an environmental problem into a social solution. For more than 20 years FareShare has been working with the food industry to identify quality, in date, good to eat surplus food that can be redistributed. The 2,489 charities that receive food from FareShare provide a lifeline to vulnerable people, including children’s breakfast and after school clubs. By receiving food from FareShare, these organisations are better able to provide nutritious meals alongside life-changing support.

Flouro light tubes Recolight was set up by the lighting industry in 2005 to take on their WEEE responsibility for recycling when the WEEE regulations were introduced into the UK. They’re also not for profit. Visit www. recolight.co.uk/lamp-recycling-forcollection-points/request-a-lampcollection.aspx for how schools can dispose of the fluoro tubes. We cannot collect them ourselves and they cannot be brought to the Veolia Southwark Reuse and Recycling Centre.

Redthread tackles violence

R

ed Thread’s Youth Violence Intervention Programme runs in London’s four Major Trauma Centre hospitals. There, its innovative service aims to reduce serious youth violence across the capital, and has revolutionised the support available to young victims of violence. Redthread started in 1995 as a group set up by parishioners from a number of local churches in Dulwich. These individuals felt that local children and young people could be more involved in the local community, if given the facilities and activities to be so. We are no longer formally linked with the churches but Redthread is still grounded in the Christian ethos – a belief in the value of each and every human being, together with a recognition of the fundamental importance of building a community where people take responsibility for each other. One of our first projects was the Redthread Youth Club, based at the Sea Scout Hut in Green Dales. The club formed a central part of the local community and saw over a hundred young people a week gather to take part in a

range of games and activities and to socialise with friends. It was in 2002 that Redthread ventured into the world of health for the first time, by running the country’s first ever Young People’s Clinic in partnership with Paxton Green Group Practice. The after school Tuesday drop-in gave all 13-19-year-olds, whether registered or not, access to a doctor, nurse, counsellor, or youth worker. After this success, the model was replicated at Herne Hill Group Practice in 2005. In 2011 the concept behind these initiatives was given a permanent home – at the Well Centre in Streatham. You can read more about the project here. In 2015 our hospital-based Youth Violence Intervention Programme celebrated 10 years of delivery. Find out more about the programme here. Partnership is key to everything we do. We recognise that in order to provide young people with the best possible service and best possible future, collaboration is key. We work with many and varied individuals and organisations to break down the artificial barriers that restrict collaborative work, so that young people have the chance to be as healthy, safe, and happy as possible. We believe in the potential of young people to make positive changes – in their lives, in the lives of their family and friends, and in the society in which they live. We aim to support young people in increasing their ability, willingness, and confidence to access high quality, appropriate youth work, health care, and education, so that theses changes can become reality.

ADVERTISE YOUR VACANCIES

For team building, there can be collaborative works. For example, groups can work on a single painting or mosaic. In each course the aim is to enable people to work outside their comfort zones. While many would claim to not be creative, the courses prove that everyone can create within the course environment. For information about Inset day programmes, call 01797 364366 or 07770 347616 or visit www.teachmecourses.co.uk.
