The redesign of the spa transforms the run down site into a sensory experience based on the changing temperatures of the water. By pumping the water up and distributing it along the entire length of the spa, the spa-goers can take advantage of different water temperatures, while conserving the amount of water used. In addition, elevating the water distribution allows for water to be used in several different ways such as bathing and cleansing. The central axis of the spa acts to direct the spa-goers along a procession from hot to cold.

INTRODUCE THE NEW SITE
Based on recommendations from President Obama’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing and design ideas from Studio Gang Architects’ Chicago Architecture Biennale exhibition, we are asked to design a police station in downtown San Jose that reflects the needs of the community. Opening up the program so that there are multiple buildings on the site decentralizes the singular dominating fortress. Spreading the buildings throughout the site forces all interINTRODUCEoutdoor—thus THE NEW SITE program circulation increasing interactions between the police and the community. Undulating the ground plane blurs the site boundary and brings the community in and through the site.

1 EXISTING SITE BOUNDARIES.
2 EXTRUDE A TYPICAL BUILDING MASS.
3 CREATE A COURTYARD.
4 INCREASE OUTDOOR PLAY SPACE.
Located in Boyle Heights, Los Angeles, YOUTH AUTHORITY encourages members of the community to spend more time outside. Outdoor spaces are maximized by minimizing the ground floor footprint and cantilevering the second floor. Ambiguous, non-programmatic zones are created to allow the youth to utilize the spaces how they want. At night, the neighborhood can use this open space to gather and hold social events. Terraced softscape seating is introduced facing the street to allow baseball fans to gather and socialize outside of the field. In a sense, loitering is encouraged at this youth center. By maintaining a constant human presence on the street, the neighborhood will be safer and cleaner.
