Intervention

In middle school, my favourite subject was chemistry. In order to found out the properties of particular substance, the usaual way is to add in reagent during experiments. I could know the characteristics of the sample by observing the chemical reaction. Though I change my major to architecture in university, I find that they are similar in some ways. To investigate certain issue of architecture, such as a kind of space or a new material, the most effective method is to add in "reagent". Some interesting changes will occur and indicate hidden features of the target object because of the intervention. The following projects are arranged in chronological order and show how I interpret architecture in 5-year bachelor study.

Introduction

麓湖别墅

>Chapter 1: nature intervenes in building, Villa of Lu Lake

The site is located on a hill which is covered by dense forest. Lu Lake, which is a glorious scenic area in Guangzhou City, lies to the south of the hill. It is a requirement to adapt the design to such topography and ecology.

As part of the design, the users also need to be decided. In this project, the villa is designed for a middle class family with four menbers: parents and two kids. They would live in their apartment in downtown Guangzhou and spend holidays in the suburb villa. Sometimes they might invite several good friends to enjoy their time there. Therefore, it is necessary to build a place isolated from daily affairs but close to nature. Le Corbusier said, "The house is a machine for living in." In my opinion, it should be a natural one, which is the threshold of the whole concept.

Tianjing (small patio)

The "Tianjing" would not only improve the lighting, but also balance the indoor and outdoor space. Rain, wind and sunlight flow into the inner space and people can "touch" them directly. Compared to staying in open area, "Tianjing" can provide more protection, which plays an important role in making a sweet home.

Forest of knowledge Type: Academic/ individual work Location: Guangzhou, China Date: 2009 Mar- May., 3rd year Role: designer Contribution: all Supervisor: LI Zheyang, lizhy@scut.edu.cn

Introduction

With the increasing number of students in SCUT, a new building for students and teachers is taken into consideration. The building is defined as a campus complex including five functions: classroom, conference, studio/ lab, gallery and library. It is not only a place for study but also a park for relax. In response to the hot and moist climate of southern China, semi-outdoor area will play an important role in my design.

All about the site: mixed styles

The campus of SCUT is inherited from the National University of Sun Yat-sen in 1930s, when a lot of traditional Chinese style buildings are constructed. After the P.R. China is established, a large amount of box-liked houses were built in a hurry to meet the growing need of education and research, but they were mostly replaced by new ones in 1980s. Another upsurge of construction was in 1990s. The site lies in the middle of those characteristic buildings so it is a must to cope with their intricate relationship.

Forest of knowledge

How to keep those factors stay harmony with each other? If we consider a building as a container, the forest must be the best one from which we can learn a lot. A forest contains a great number of amazing creatures as well as countless events happening simultaneously above the trees, on the ground and in the soil. It has the capacity to include all the things in nature. Therefore, I would like to create a forest, a forest of knowledge, where not only things can be harmonized with each other but also all kinds of ideas are allowed to develop. The diversity of thought can generate active atmosphere for students and teachers to pursue truth.

The courtyard is the core of the complex. It aims to provide a variety of different and interesting experience about forest, such as walking above the trees, wandering under the shade or pass through the shrub, which is rare in cities. This is not a real forest but it can still recall people to the beauty of nature.

Concept

Dissimilation, in the context of phonology, is a phenomenon whereby similar consonant sounds in a word have a tendency to become different over time. We believe the space inside a building share the same characteristics. If we insert a space into another one of different property, their form and function may change in response to the coexistence.

Modern Beacons

The beacons on the Great Wall were used to inform the ancient emperor of invaders. However, we now design some modern "beacons" at the foot of the Great Wall to deliver happiness and excitement. The light and music from the houses build an unprecedented landscape and tell the nearby friends that a party is taking place or is coming.

Introduction

Cement is a common material of construction. It's fluid and its shape is only determined by the mould. However, we found that cement is mostly shaped by solid mouldboard. A strange idea sudenly struke our minds. What about something soft? The fluidity of cement seems to contain a lot of potentials. We finally decided to investigate how to shape cement with cloth.

16

Research: horizontal

To strengthen the model, we add wire netting into the cement. Although we can better control the shape in horizontal way, it is too fragile to support something.

This model is quite successful and it can even afford an adult sitting on it. The only problem is that the flexibility of the cloth increases the difficulty to control the final result.

Prototype

Considering that cement is a material that can afford extremely high pressure, we decide to develop a vertical structure on the basis of previous study. However, it is not realistic to build a structure as a whole because the softness of mouldboard makes it hard to control the shape precisely in large scale. Making some individuals and assembling them is a more accessible way.

We set several requirements for the individual. First, we should find out a method to control the cement more accurately so that each individual can be almost the same. Second, they can be produced in a fixed process. Third, they can be assembled in different forms.

Background

The site of the project is located at the east coast to Huadi river, Fangcun district, Guangzhou. There are a lot of regional communities, old warehouses, factories, as well as new housing, hospitals, and Huangdaxian Temple, which indicate multi-function and chaos of this urban fringe. It is also one of the oldest preserved districts in Guangzhou, nevertheless, the fast paces of Guangdong province`s development has influenced it as well. Now it`s facing the challenge to transform from its old pattern to a new shape. With still a lot of original residential and traditional construction existing there, the problem becomes more intriguing. Our solution is not to start a revolution, but to find a way allow them to coexist.

History: from prosperity to depression

Although the site is located at Bai'etan area, the edge of Guangzhou city and Foshan city, it has experienced prosperity once upon a time. At Han dynasty (about 200BC- 200AD), it was a dock of the Maritime Silk Road. At Tang dynasty (about 600AD), a lot of foreign flowers were imported, which encouraged the development of gardening. After World War II, Bai'etan area met another prosperity. Factories and warehouse were built because of the conveniece of transport. However, industry declined as the city rapidly enlarges its boundary in 1990s. This area remain deserted while hundreds of modern buildings keep emerging in downtown Guangzhou.

Community rebirth

To regain its previous prosperity, we should emphasize on the characteristics of the site itself: Huangdaxian Temple, the landscape and the native life style. Huangdaxian Temple epitomizes the tradition of Guangzhou. Also, the streams spreading around the site are potential landscape resources. When it refers to the native people, their leisure life style is well known by most Cantonese. These three elements are isolated from each other so the site stays tedium and inefficient. We need to start a big operation to activate the community.

The site consists of three zones which contain different functions. The riverfront zone is the place where residents relax and do sport. Urban coexist

Coexist does not refer to copying the old way of lifestyle, but refer to rebirthing the traditional living patterns and impression of the space by designing. Expansion of the Huangdaxian Temple, business district designed according to the traditional pattern of village, modern SOHO zone and green belt along the river link, are connected by fluent traffic route and rhythmic plaza. When people walk in this area, they will feel as if walking between the old stories of the city and how they translate in new narrative way. It is a spiritual tour connecting to the old time, and yet it`s the true meaning of coexist.
