10 Fun Facts about Space

STEAM at John Lyon

Akshar Patel, 9CEP

Students have been enjoying STEAM both in lessons and during extra-curricular activities throughout the school. Here is a

round-up of what has been going on this term:

Year 7

· Working on the VEX IQ robots.

· Competing to build the tallest and strongest towers possible out of just ten sheets of paper and some tape. See photos

on p.21.

· Designing, making and testing boats made from cardboard. See photos on p.21.

· Taking part in some Innovation challenges from the Design Museum: creating novel designs to deal with litter;

designing a chair; and designing objects that change colour on contact with something that adds to the functionality of

the object. See bottom of p.21 for Rayyan Ganayi (7ADH)’s design for colour changing plant pots.

· Learning to create models using the Sketchup software.

Year 8

· Laser cutting

· Shell energy challenge to find a solution to the energy problem.

· Carboard modelling

· Soldering

Year 9

about it to make it better. So instead of inventing something we were adding features or changing the shape of something that

already has a task to do.

Competitions

Throughout the whole school, there has been a been a space lander competition where you build around a paper cup to

make a device which would cushion or make the landing safe for a person landing on Mars.

We also had Akshar Patel (9CEP) Hemang Khandelwal (9CEP), Yash Shukla (9CKL), Rishabh Velani (9EKM) and Tarun

Naodhar (9CEP) take part in a VEX IQ robot competition (photo above). They achieved 4
