KNIGHT OF THE MONTH When you think of the core of our Red Coats, besides the captains who do an incredible job, many names come to mind quickly. Raymond Fioramonti, a member of EDW for 43 years, is at nearly every event that I attend. Ray’s dedication, humor and kindness is constantly on display when guests walk into the Main Hall. His professionalism in aiding the rest of the staff to ensure our guests enjoy themselves. Ray has been a consistent volunteer for a wide range of events at EDW over the four decades he’s been a member. We are grateful for his devotion to our efforts which allow us to aid many people and groups throughout Arlington and Virginia. On Ray’s behalf we will be making a donation to the Cathedral of St. Thomas More in gratitude for his service to EDW.
FDD Vince Long assists DD Thom Galvin and Father Joe Giordono at EDWs annual officer installation ceremony.
MEET OUR NEW DISTRICT DEPUTY At the Annual Convention for the Virginia State Council May 1-3 in Richmond Thom Galvin became the new District Deputy (DD) for District 29, replacing Robert Dannemiller, who served a record 5 times in the post. District 29 includes EDW, McLean’s Saint John Council 11806, Saint Luke’s Council 11122 also in McLean, and Padre Pio Council 10754 of Great Falls, providing a busy agenda for the new DD. Thom, trustee and past grand knight of EDW, has served the State Council as an alternate delegate to the Supreme Convention and a District nominator. He continues as a co-chair of EDW’s signature Thanksgiving Charity Dinner and as manager of the Deep End.

THIS GREAT MELTING POT America is an incredible country. People for generations have, and continue to, risk their lives to have the freedoms we take for granted. Immigrants and refugees come to America and can in time become full-fledged Americans. Once they take that oath of citizenship they are our equal in all matters. You can go to France or Germany or any other country and become citizens but you can never truly be a Frenchman or Italian. Not here, here you raise your right hand and take the Naturalization Oath of Allegiance to follow our laws and stand side by side with your fellow Americans and care for one another and you become a full American, equal to any Mayflower descendants. The great ideals that have bonded us and kept our country together are perfect complements to our Catholic faith. The ugly trend that’s been around for a few years of automatically distrusting and making an enemy of a fellow American who has different opinions than us is tiresome. It’s time for it to fade away. Did you know that as Virginians you do not belong to a political party, whether it’s the Democratic, Republican or somesuch other party? Politically we’re considered an “open” state. So I’d like to challenge each of us to, for the next election cycle try not to define ourselves or the person in front of you by politics. See each other as Americans who want the best for our country and try and find common ground to do best by our children. What keeps the American Experiment successful is that we respect each other’s differences and rather than insult or simply tolerate them we celebrate them. Whether we see ourselves as Americans or as Catholic Americans we never ever should see ourselves as victims of this or that. If something doesn’t go our way we simply need to adapt and overcome and find a way to make it work. Generations before us have done exactly that, we will do no less. As Catholics, members of the Universal Church, we know that God gave us free will to do good and evil. We are also instructed by Jesus to love one another regardless of whether the other person is a Catholic, Muslim, Protestant, Jew or atheist. Remember the Samaritan? If we want our fellow Americans to respect our Catholicism we need to continue to respect those whose beliefs are different from ours. This doesn’t mean we should capitulate and rollover when we see something harmful taking place. If we know through our moral conscience that an act of our national leaders is wrong for America we have the right and obligation to advocate for corrective action. But we don’t and shouldn’t demonize those who have differing opinions. As Catholic laymen we are encouraged to be in the town square speaking up for the less fortunate, the immigrant, the ones who cannot defend themselves, the ones who are bullied, the ones who are lost without our friendship. St. Rafael Guízar y Valencia, member of council 2311, please pray for us and guide us. John White 73rd Grand Knight

ROSARIES FOR KENYA
MANAGER’S CORNER PETER SILANO Our annual 4th of July Picnic was a great success. Many thanks to Kenny Goss, Gary Kennedy, Jim Schwind and their teams, Maria and her kitchen staff and our maintenance team Rene, and Jose, for making this event such a great success. Please note, the Supper Club and Family breakfast will be on vacation in August but will return in September. We look forward to seeing you at our Labor Day BBQ on September 7, End of Year Pool Party on September 12, Family Breakfast on September 20, Supper Club on September 25, and “Save the Date” for The Columbus Club Crab Fest on October 2, 2015. All menus for the September events will be in the September Knightlife.
To each one of you who donated, God bless you and thank you. I never stop being amazed by people in this council and for that matter Knights statewide. The St. Agnes Sacristan travels on mission every year to Kenya to aid the orphans in the Diocese of Meru. Take a look at her web site www.loveinmeru.com This year she asked our council to donate Rosaries and Miraculous Medals to help bring the protection of Mary to the Kenyans from the frequent terrorist attacks from Somalia. I asked her how many she would like, she answered “Pray about it. The Holy Spirit will tell you.” So I decided to unleash the Knights of Columbus on her!! The council purchased 2,000 Miraculous Medals for a very low price. I then decided to ask Knights at EDW and throughout the state to donate Rosaries. Well the Holy Spirit spoke! We’ve collected 6,000 Rosaries in addition to the 2,000 medals. John Grand Knight

CULTURE OF LIFE
Life with Nathan By Edouard Guilloux Second of a three-part series focusing on sharing our lives with those with Down Syndrome and other disabilities. My younger brother Nathan has multiple disabilities including autism, ADHD, and Trisomy 21 (Down Syndrome). We adopted him 12 years ago, when he was 6 months old and I was 11. I’ll never forget the day Mom first brought him home. As soon as she pulled in we all ran out to the van to meet our newest brother. Welcoming Nathan into the family was such a joy. He was just so cute, and still is today! That’s not to say it has always been easy. Nathan’s disabilities are quite severe. He is very low-functioning in most aspects of everyday life, and he needs someone to be with him and assist him for just about everything. During most of middle and high school, I spent a lot of time taking care of him. I would often pick him up at the bus stop when he came home from school, and play with him outside for an hour or so before heading in. This could be difficult; I would have preferred to have had more free time... All our activities had to take Nathan into account: Was someone available to take care of him? Would he behave? Would the sensory input be overwhelming for him? I admit that I sometimes wished that my life was a bit more normal, that I could just hang out with my friends without worrying about my little brother who was just so different.
from what we can or cannot do, but rather finds origin in the simple fact of our existence as children of God, made out of love in His image and likeness. I learned that the measure of human greatness lies not in what we accomplish, but in the depth and constancy of our love. I discovered what true love really means: an ardent desire for the good of another, and a willingness to lay down our lives to bring it about. And I learned how poor and insufficient my own love is. But Jesus shows us, as He always does, how to love most perfectly: the Cross is the road to the true joy of the Resurrection. “Let the children come to me, and do not prevent them; for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these” (Mt 19:14). I like to think that Jesus meant this not only for the physically young, but also, and maybe especially, for those who remain young in mind and spirit for their entire lives. Nathan has been close to God since a very young age. He has always loved going to Mass, and for years it was just about the only place where he was perfectly well behaved. After quite some preparation, he was finally able to receive Jesus in the Holy Eucharist when he made his First Communion just a few weeks ago. My brother’s given name, already before we adopted him, was Nathan. How great our excitement was when we looked up its meaning 12 years ago: “He [God] has given.” And truly He has! A beautiful gift, a path of love, a source of grace. Edouard Guilloux (a Knight of Columbus with the George Brent Council 5332, in Manassas) is a seminarian for the Diocese of Arlington. His father, Jean-Marc Guilloux (a Knight with the Fr. Widmer Council 7877, in Stafford), was involved in opening an extension of the Jérôme Lejeune Foundation in the United States in 2012. The Foundation was founded to provide research, care, and advocacy for people with genetic intellectual disabilities. In so doing it continues the work of Servant of God Jérôme Lejeune, a world-renowned pediatrician and geneticist who, in 1958, identified the cause of Down Syndrome when he discovered the extra chromosome on the 21st pair. Lejeune died in 1994 and his cause for canonization was opened in 2007. The diocesan phase of the cause has been completed and is now being reviewed in Rome.
THE PAST GRAND KNIGHT’S PICNIC
But already then, and all the more in retrospect, I have always been convinced that it’s all worth it. I know that I truly have received a hundredfold back for anything I’ve been asked to give. I learned from Nathan that our value as persons doesn’t come KNIGHT LIFE
June 28 was the second Past Grand Knights Picnic. That lovely afternoon at the BBQ Pit, about 7 of our Past Grand Knights came together to talk about the “Old Days”, enjoy a burger and a hotdog and a beer with members and our current council officers. EDW embraces our past as we move forward into an exciting future. We appreciate the work that these men have done over the years and their dedication to the Knights of Columbus and to EDW. Thanks to our PGK’s and to current and future GK’s. Christopher Bannon 5
