he Landkammer’s residential home was built in the 1950’s. Its simple reactilnear design and south faced windows are things to consider when creating a landscape design. The was based upon the clients want and needs such as: large gathering space, jacuzzi, fire-pit, and lawn. I decided to go with more modern approach to compliment the hard rectilinear forms. Having a 30 percent slope driveway was a challenge, but eventually lead to a simple yet creative design.

Applied structure over lit water

yntactal Design—is design consist of how structure work in different landscapes and they are applied in context. Students created structures out of basswood, photograph them in different perspectives, then applied it in photoshop. This procedure shows how structures are viewed and used in the context of the site. The application of compositional and spatial principles was the focus of this project.

waken by the burst of light one can never imagine even in dense traffic of Southern California, a person can find a place of peace and solitude. This was an experience as I left the crowded traffic in anticipation of reaching my destination. I found myself facing a narrow highway surrounded by flat land. Far behind the fog one can see building, shapes, and patterns. As I headed to the rest stop, I realized that I was in what appeared to be rural America. I came to notice the vast amount of grape vines when all of a sudden a blanket of fog over took my vision. I could see outlines of massive machinery and buildings. Driving this

dense fog, I pulled over to take photo after photo of these rows and rows of beautiful

leafless tress. I couldn’t help but wanting to walk deeper and deeper into this mini forest. I as

walked out of there I noticed some railroad tracks by the highway. Finally reaching my desig-

reflecting

nated area I could see grass filled with small droplets of water, concrete trees, and yellowish-green mildew on small trees. The rest stop had some nice qualities, but much more critical ones. Oil stains are all over the parking lot and holes on the flat surfaces were not so intriuging. On my way back, I truly appreciated to qualities and characteristics Tulare County that I think urban areas can never achieve.

ontag Residence Hall is located on the north east side of the Harvey Mudd Campus. Due to the extensive paving, the goal of this project was to soften the impact of the parking lot as well as creating a planting design that ďŹ ts the character the campus. Additionally, the campus planning group wishes to have the small courtyard space to be turned into a meditation garden with a reďŹ ned planting palette.

oltz courtyard is located between the two major buildings. The goal of this design was to design a garden room to relax, study, and enjoy for eating lunch. I had to prepare a 4-season planting design while following the three main criteria: Function, Aesthetics, and Environment. I want to create as many individual or small group spaces as possible to use the courtyard to its fullest potential. This design is a mixture of curvilinear shapes and modern design.

he design visualized here was inspired by the idea of universal access. This means that the design goal was to be as inclusive to as many people possible. Whether they be young or old, walking, biking, in a wheelchair, or in a stroller. This site was previously an uninviting space for pedestrians, being predominately oriented towards vehicle circulation and with no deďŹ ned path foor pedestrians. By creating a better deďŹ nition between the two and lessening the emphasis on vehicular access, the space becomes much more usable and enjoyable. Hopefully, these changes can create a more obvious transition to the beach and the ocean, adding to the already beautiful public spaces of Laguna Beach

he city of Fresno is a unique community, but suffers in using their landscapes for the better of the city. This project was to redesign public spaces and city center using artistic implemetation on the landscape. Public spaces such as public parks and plazas are essentially what identiďŹ es the city.

ur project site that exist in Southern California, has been born out of land use and planning qualities that has been mal-adaptive to the process of nature. The project is located in Chino, Ca and sits at Prado Basin. In 1941, A dam was created in the basin due to a overwhelming flood in 1938. This operation was what allowed our project to exist across the lower Santa Ana Watershed. Given the oportunities we have devised a new model that is juxtaposed to the intial operation of the dam’s creation. This model is called Post Op[ Post Intial Operation Model ].— Post Op is an adaptive model for the developement of green infrastructure that is ecologically sensitive. Post Op is a framework the responds to the effect of the site. Our framework references a trajectory of performative gradient that range from natural systems to hybridized systems.— The natural system serves as systems that clean the river while reactivating previous riparian eco-structure within the Prado Basin. The natural system then leading to hybridized system that push the natural and artificial processes, in the creation of food, energy, and biodegradable plastics.— The goal of combining these two systems into one multi-functional master plan will provide a base for economic viability, sustainable residential and commercial developement, and ecological sustainability.

Organic Agriculture + Green Industy

[Integrated Treatment Center] •Ecological backbone of system •Water treatment prior to releasing it into the ocean •Educational education opportunity for center

[Freshwater marshlands] •Hold peak discharge volume or manages the flow of water •Alternative model for regional flood protection •Allows water to percolate and infiltrate the ground to recharge groundwater

•Allows wildife to cross interstate 71 from prado regional park to Chino Hills State Park •Wildlife corridor- expand and sustain existing wildlife areas •Free range cattle grazing allows grazing without being confined •Locally supplied organic foods

[local farmers market + Botanical Garden] •Allows for sustainable agrcultural that is sensitive to local ecology •Irrigate crops with collected on site from retention areas •Use of vertical farms and the production of bioplastics to generate revenue and create green jobs for the local community

NATURAL PROFORMATIVE SYSTEMS

Trajectory of Proformative Gradients What is Post Op? Post OP is a period of recovery. Everyone who undergoes surgery is subject to a recovery period. Medical surgeons call this “post-operative period”. Our idea of post op, as it relates to the landscape, is based on performance in order to heal the damage ecological infrastructure on the site. The operation is necessary to restore the natural ecosystem to a healthy state. The post op will require a period of recovery. The term recovery implies that something once lost, devalued, forgotten, or misplaced has been found again with renewable vitality[Corner]. This life process and time line for the recovery will be further defined as we move through the components of the design for the Prado Landscape.

Expanding upon the existing wetland, this area is a synthesis of the riparian corridor and artificially created wetlands area to meet the proformative needs of the project. This is the first step towards developing this site. The zones in this site includes water treatment in three major areas of the river: Fluvially integrated wetland, natural wetand and sequential drainage systems.

Creating sustainable economic engines is the second objective of this project. Agricultural spaces and bioplastics manufacturing facilities shall be used in this site. The creation of sustainable agricultural and manufacturing on the site provides employment that propels the remainder of the projects development.

Transportation

[Increase density for residential + commercial] •House 5,000 new residents in one-quarter mile •Offer those working in green industry at post op to live sustainably and on site •Local farming and community interaction to be the central theme of the new zone

[Bungalow Resort + interactive media center] •Native American Cultural Center •Resort/hotel bungalows from the idea of native americans living in peace and respecting nature •Produce eco-tourism to help generate revenues •Creates capital to sustain and maintain progress

[Pre-School through Graduate Education] •Center for the study of natural systems and preservation •Research institute for Green Design •Housing for students allows proper educational environment •Creates capital to sustain and maintain progress

•Multi-layered parking for use of natural light •Use of Pecan trees for carbon sequestration and of on-site smog due to interstate 71 •Implementation on light rail and tram systems for site and local travel

HYBRID PERFORMATIVE SYSTEMS

Providing a place for residence, this portion of the site is provided by a mix use, transit-orientated community developement. Unlike the widespread tract home model in places nearby, this community would provide residence with amenities within walking distance and have a relative high population density

Showcases for regional and community art and history are severely lacking in Southern California region. In this project, a diverse cultural center has been devised to preserve and display the art, history, and cultural artifacts of the region and its people to local residence and visitors.

Moving individuals away from the current dependence upon automotive transportation is a fundamental project objective. this is accomplished by cohesively linking the site into existing regional transportation networks, providing an on-site tram network, and by providing the majority of necessary amenities within walking distance.

tudents were to design in an open area, which is the Santa Monica Civic Center. The goal of this project is to reconnect the disjointed areas and to increase Santa Monica diversity [ age, social, and ethnicity ]. There is a proposed transit center that will increase amount of visitors in Santa Monica thus connecting the three major gathering areas [ 3rd St Promenade, Santa Monica Pier, and Transit Center] to the design project. Increasing pedestrian axis and decreasing vehicular axis will engage a broader range of visitors to Santa Monica. The redesign will be the central core of Santa Monica not only for tourist, but for the local communities as well.
