You are not alone if you are looking for a job. Improving your chances for getting hired is not difficult. More and more people these days are looking for work which means you have to do whatever you can to get noticed and then hired. Perhaps this is not you but you have been told you could be let go in the near future because the company you work for is losing money. This is the case all too often and Americans continue to lose their jobs every day. Perhaps you are retired and are feeling the effects of the tough economy through your portfolio and you are looking to go back to work. Many people find them selves in this situation as well. No matter what situation that you are in, you cannot get discouraged and give up. While it may be difficult to find a job, it still is a numbers game, meaning that eventually you will find a job. The first tip to help you get hired is to understand that a good percentage of jobs that people are able to find are through word of mouth. That means you need to do some networking. Talk to people who are in the business and find out more about the job to help you understand what the job entails. Make sure you do your part about researching companies you are interested in. You will look better if you understand who the company really is. The more you know about the company, the better. If you should be fortunate enough to get an interview, your interest will be presented in the manner that will likely impress the interview panel. Employers will see you have knowledge about the company and will value the fact that you took the time to research their organization. It more than shows your interest to be a part of their team. Second, have a daily plan each day to help you find a job. Decide the day before what it is that you are going to do the next day. This will help keep you on track as well as help you keep focused on your search. It may be beneficial to also consider creating a spreadsheet to keep track of your efforts on paper. If you do not have a computer, you can certainly write your spreadsheet on paper with the same
concept. Third, make at least five contacts each week with agencies that interest you. Contact the human resources department for any additional information. Many times they may be able to give you a heads up on future openings that you may be able to apply for. Fourth, if you are laid off, treat your job search as a real job. It takes time and effort to find something. Use your time wisely and act as if your new job for the time being is your job. Your efforts will pay off if you take this serious approach. The more steps you take to find a job will only help you. If you are not laid off but fear losing your job, take the time after work or before work, to start searching. The scenario is obviously much better if you are looking to find a job instead of being forced to look for work when you don't have a job. Fifth, plan on attending career fair days whenever possible. Many of these companies have been known to hired right on the spot so be prepared. If you plan on attending any career fair, always dress to make that first impression count. You want to make a good impression on your future employer. Also make sure that you have plenty of resumes and be prepared to answer interview like questions at the very least, when talking to the company representatives. If you have been thinking about going to school for a new career, the other thing that you may wish to consider is that there are many colleges that are available to you. There are plenty of vocational, community colleges, and colleges offering Bachelor's and Master's degrees if you are in need of additional education to get that edge in the tough economic time that we are all faced with. Do not become discouraged. Take it upon yourself to network with people in the field that you are looking to get into! Spend a day with someone to determine if the job is for you. Networking is king. It is probably the oldest way to find a job, but often the best way. Others have found jobs that were the result of taking the time to contact people who worked in the profession. Finally, always maintain a positive attitude if you want to improve your chances for getting hired. Don't let your emotions show. Stay upbeat and smile. The old saying, "attitude is everything," is so true. Many people believe that everything happens for a reason and that one door closes so that another can open. Who knows, maybe the door that just closed is about to open in the very next room.
