WELCOME TO THE PANKEY INSTITUTE

T

E

We hope you enjoy reading this catalog of our courses and find something of value to you. If you come to the Institute this year, you will likely find a wide demographic mix of participants from across North America and around the world. The mix will include dentists newly in practice, dentists a few years in practice, and dentists who have been in practice for many years.

TITU

What these participants have in common is the desire to practice dentistry in an individualized, systematic and comprehensive way that allows them to do their best work for patients who appreciate their services. They know that The Pankey Institute has successfully guided thousands of dentists on their journey to a happier and more fulfilling practice. These thousands are not only happier; as a byproduct of their practice balance and lifestyle, they are healthier and more financially successful over time. If you have not been back to the Institute for a while, you will note that the curriculum has undergone development, and several new courses are offered. If you are relatively young in practice and coming to the Institute for the first time, we have a limited number of scholarship awards to reduce tuition. We also offer nine-month financing. –Dr. Steve Ratcliff, Chairman of the Education Dept.

Dentistry’s One Place With 37 years of experience delivering postgraduate dental education, the nonprofit Pankey Institute is still the one place where dentists who aspire to provide individualized, comprehensive dentistry become equipped with the behavioral, clinical, and financial knowledge they need to be successful. The Pankey Institute is still the one place where all aspects of dentistry are addressed and where an exceptional community of educators is concerned about your ability to implement what you learn.

Advanced clinical training in aesthetics and comprehensive restorative dentistry. Other focus courses to develop expertise in the areas of personal and practice financial management, and working optimally with your office team. This curriculum is influenced by the Philosophy of Dental Practice espoused by Dr. Lindsey D. Pankey, Sr. This philosophy respects the unique value and circumstanceof each person. Dentists are challenged to know themselves and their patients, know their work, keep abreast of emerging technology and knowledge, master these to the absolute best of their ability and help patients make appropriate choices to achieve comprehensive treatment. We recognize that striving for excellence is a personal journey and each person pursuing it is a unique individual. The practice you create for yourself will be uniquely your own. Continuing your dental education at Pankey will give you the information, methods, and guidance you need to soar!

Each lab bench can be converted to an operatory, allowing clinical and lab procedures to be done at the same place simply by adding or removing the lifelike mannequin. Each bench also contains a convenient-to-use vacuum, handpieces and footpedal controls. Light curing units for composites are available at lab benches, and a larger Triad light curing machine is also available. In the second floor lab, there are five units for polishing appliances, along with two units for trimming models and a steam cleaner. Sterilizing units and handpiece lubricators are located in both the second and first floor labs. Our mannequins, which can be converted for use by both right- and left-handed people, have been designed to closely replicate the human head and jaw. Removable models allow instructors to demonstrate different types of oral health problems. A convenient vacuum connects from the mannequin to the vacuum unit, to quickly sweep away particles from grinding. With a capacity for 24 downstairs and 26 upstairs, our labs are big enough to accommodate full classes of students, but intimate enough to allow for real learning and collaboration. The clinic is where the students do reversible procedures on each other, such as exams and bite splint therapy, and irreversible procedures on very lifelike mannequins that adapt to the clinic chair.

Continuum Level 2E (C2E) – Altering Occlusion Function and Esthetics

IN

Taking your practice from vision to reality — developing in equilibration and esthetic treatment planning

S

TITU

This course focuses on how to undertake occlusional changes with confidence. Often, there is little understanding of how the occlusal changes will impact the function and parafunction of the patient. After C2E, you will have the ability to predictably alter occlusion through visualization and planning. We will also begin to look at your practice vision and how you communicate it. We’ll help you decide what your ideal practice looks like and lay out a plan that will bring you to the threshold of that vision. Living your dream practice will create happiness and satisfaction for you, your staff and your patients. We’ll also look at your communication skills. Are you welcoming patients or driving them away? How do patients perceive your office, staff and you? Communication is a critical part of having a spectacular and flourishing practice. Sample occlusal considerations covered: Is equilibration always a “take away” procedure? When is it contraindicated? Deciding whether equilibration, restorative or ortho is best When vertical dimension can be altered and when it must not be Lack of space at maximum intercuspation and opening vertical dimension Why composites break off and provisionals break loose How to know what changes the patient will tolerate before completing the case

Continuum Level 4 (C4) – Posterior Restorative Considerations The final stage of the restorative riddle and increasing case acceptance through communication While the solution to the technical riddle may be clearly and easily visualized, the behavioral one remains puzzling. In C4, we’ll focus on both riddles as we discuss occlusion, sequential treatment planning, comfortable, long-lasting posterior restorations, and how to make connections in a very real way between what you see and what the patient says, feels and experiences. The posterior considerations discussed in C4 represent the last piece of the technical riddle; understanding this will free you to begin solving the behavioral riddle to a higher degree and with greater confidence. In C4 we also will discuss personal and practice finance and investment. Having a financially healthy practice allows you the freedom to treat and diagnose patients in a way that not only addresses their needs but also their desires, too. Sample topics covered: Whether a condylar inclination of 20 degrees means safety in all movements How to start anterior guidance on the posterior teeth How to guide your practice in the direction you want it to go Planning for the future Helping patients understand and accept dental treatment Prerequisite: Continuum Level 3 37 AGD Lecture & Participation Credits Tuition includes lodging in The Pankey Lodge. A 4-day focus course on business and personal financial planning for dentists and optionally their spouse or office manager course is offered in conjunction with Cain, Watters & T IThis U T Associates, and you will have one-on-one pension planning time with one of CWA’s expert consultants. Dentistry is your profession but it is also your business. You took on the roles of CEO (Chief Executive Officer), COO (Chief Operations Officer), and CFO (Chief Financial Officer) the day you decided to buy or build your practice. Business people look at numbers in two very different ways. One view is designed for external consumption by such groups as the IRS and stockholders. The second is designed to feed the internal brain of the business, the busy executives who must make the tough decisions regarding management and leadership. If your CPA has a primary focus on taxation, you may be considering data that blurs your vision about your business. Large corporations use the skills of a CMA (Certified Management Accountant) to create the internal information that you, as the CEO, COO and CFO need. This 3-day program will outline the creation of appropriate data tracking systems to assist and inform you about your business, and it will prepare you to make countless decisions necessary to create a thriving dental practice and retirement plan. It will give you skills in planning and the tools to automate the planning process. You also will learn about personal wealth accumulation planning and management. You will need to bring: Laptop computer with QuickBooks Pro or Premier software (current year) and data from your dental practice in QuickBooks From your accounting data computer, your chart of accounts, balance sheet, profit & loss report (last month, year to date, and last fiscal year), and payroll reports From your dental practice computer, production gross and net for each doctor, hygiene and associate (last month, year to date, and last fiscal year); collection gross and net (last month, year to date, and last fiscal year); total accounts receivable, and adjustment reports (last month, year to date, and last fiscal year) Other beneficial numbers to bring: personal and business budgets if you have them, retirement plan numbers and/or reports, college funding expectations, and life insurance numbers
