The design for the Northside Branch Libray started with the idea of a building siting within a park and how to make this two elements respond to each other in a cohesive manner. The building and the park also have to respond to the Northside Fort Worth neighborhood by providing spaces in which people can spend quality time at their own preference.

Project Location

Existing Library on site

The site has an existing structure which was opened in the 1960's and it sits on top of the crest of Circle Park with superb views of the neighborhood and downtown Fort Worth. The existing building also acknowledges a hierarchical axis from Circle Park Boulevard as it sits right on center from this powerful axis. So, by taking the example from Palladio in Villa Emo and Greek Temples, the project keeps the existing structure from the current library, frees its structure from the masonry infill walls, adds two wings to house several program necessities and a trellis super-structure in order to create a microclimate, shade the building and the community. Thus responding in a symbolic gesture to the main axis created by Circle Park Boulevard. The project incorporates the use of terraced gardens to work with the slope of the hill and to take advantage of the views back to Fort Worth. The gardens complement the building and create an inviting atmosphere for the community to use the facility and the park at its fullest. Therefore, the library becomes a Temple of Knowledge siting at the crest of the hill overlooking the gardens, the neighborhood and the city; a reference point and an icon for a neighborhood that is rich with Latino heritage and history. Like Jorge Luis Borges once said:"I have always imagined that Paradise will be a kind of library."
