PRACTICAL LIVING SPACE: RESIDENCE FOR SUDOKU PLAYERS [THEORETICAL LOCATION, SOUTHWEST MO/FALL 2007]
[01]
This project offered an in-depth exploration into the basic principles of space and enclosure while applying these to the challenging issues of site and restricting program allowances. Additional research through photography provided an understanding into how architectural design can be formed and experienced. Through selected images, the visual qualities of layering and the relationship
of transparency vs. opacity helped initiate the process of the design for a residence for Sudoku players. The design approach was simple: Approach the residence according to the rules and strict geometry of the game using layering techniques and various qualities of opacity to further define my goals and create practical living spaces.

CHASE ST. LIVE/WORK ARTIST COMMUNITY [SPRINGFIELD MO/FALL 2008]
Chase Street lies just north of the Commercial Street District at the termination of the famous Jefferson Avenue Footbridge. This project was meant to be an envisioning effort in which an community anchor would bring local artistic talent and surrounding public engagement to the fairly desolate Chase Street community. This, in effect, would provide an immediate and pivotal link back to the growing Commercial street while extending the creative bounds. After intense research and studying of the historic Commercial Street District, the goal was to implement the same design methods and principles of the early 1900’s into the design of a new live/work structure for the growing artist community surrounding Chase Street. As a result, the design drew from the basic ideology and design methodology of the Commercial Street District while offering a sensitive relationship and bond back to its predecessor. ›Revit + Photoshop + InDesign.

[03]
This project looked into the real possibility of an addition to the Hammons School of Architecture on Drury’s campus. The program was divided into two major components; one being an Environmental Sustainability Center Core, and the other being the Center for Community Studies, including the primary lecture auditorium for the architecture program.
Design decisions began after in-depth explorations into the key site location and its potential significance within the Drury University community as well as the greater community of Springfield. With the Jordan Valley Park development ever-growing and gaining public support, this project is intended to act as a gateway, connecting and engaging future community based developments.

+ LIBRARIUM PRIZE NOMINATION
Located in Frank A. Theis Park in Kansas City, the extensive performing arts center is expected to act as a new cultural and artistic hub located south of Steven Holl’s Nelson-Atkins Museum addition. The center; an expansive program containing a community theater, dance hall, music conservatory, and outdoor amphitheater, will act as a catalyst for bringing the surrounding K.C. community together through various public-driven program components. Breaking down the very basic principles of the intended program requirements allowed an in-depth understanding of how activities and relationships can be integral and beneficial with the fundamental philosophy of the park. ›1:128 site model

A COLLECTIVE IGNORANCE
FOR MOST, THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT IS A PHYSICAL BACKDROP WHERE MEMBERS OF SOCIETY ENGAGE IN THEIR LIVES. WHY DO MOST APPEAR TO CHOOSE TO REMAIN UNATTACHED EMOTIONALLY TO THEIR SURROUNDINGS AND WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE REASONS FOR THIS DISASSOCIATION? THE CONCEPT OF PLACE REFERS TO MARKING A PIECE OF THE PHYSICAL REALM, BUT ADDS A NOTION OF INDIVIDUAL ATTACHMENT AND A SENSE OF SOCIAL BELONGING. BUT AS TECHNOLOGIES ADVANCE AND CITIES CONTINUE TO GROW, THE EMPHASIS IS ON THE UNMARKED, THE NEW, AND THE ECONOMICALLY SAFE SOLUTION. THERE IS A DISREGARD FOR THE AESTHETIC AND SOCIAL ASPECTS THAT THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT NEEDS TO MAKE MANIFEST; CONSEQUENTLY, PLACES BEGIN TO LOSE SIGNIFICANCE. ULTIMATELY, PLACE BECOMES A MERE LOCATION [A POSITION ON A MAP] AND IS ADDED TO AND STACKED UPON THIS BACKGROUND REALM WHERE WE CARRY OUT OUR LIVES WITH NO REAL EMOTIONAL BOND. WE MUST DEVISE STRATEGIES TO BETTER UNDERSTAND PLACE SO THAT ITS IDENTITY CAN BE STRENGTHENED AND REINFORCED WITHIN THE URBAN LANDSCAPE. IDENTITY IS CRUCIAL TO THE SUCCESSFUL FORMATION AND GROWTH OF A CITY’S COMMUNITY. WITHOUT ESTABLISHING A VIABLE SENSE OF IDENTITY AND ATTACHMENT, A POTENTIAL DESIGN PROPOSAL WILL FAIL TO ACCOMPLISH THE GOALS SET FORTH BY MY ARGUMENTS. THUS, IN HELPING TO ESTABLISH THESE NEW IDENTITIES OR POSSIBLY REINFORCING A PREVIOUSLY ESTABLISHED IDENTITY, THE ENCOMPASSING COMMUNITY AND THEIR HISTORICAL CONTEXT MUST BE INTENSELY EVALUATED AS THE NOTION OF “PLACE” IS EMBEDDED WITH SOCIAL RELATIONS, A SENSE OF BELONGING AND, ULTIMATELY, COMMUNITY PRIDE. IT SOUNDS SIMPLE; HOWEVER, THE TENDENCY OF THE MASSES IS STILL TOWARDS A SPATIAL AND CULTURAL SEPARATIONFROM THEIR PRODUCT [THE BUILD ENVIRONMENT] AND FROM THEIR HISTORY. SOCIAL ATTITUDES TOWARDS ENVIRONMENT MUST BE ANALYZED, EVALUATED, AND BETTER UNDERSTOOD AS HUMAN VALUES AND BELIEFS ARE INFINITELY COMPLEX AND AMBIGUOUS. TO THIS EXTENT, IN-DEPTH STUDIES INTO THE DISCIPLINES OF ANTHROPOLOGY, SOCIOLOGY, GEOGRAPHY, AND PSYCHOLOGY ARE ESSENTIAL FOR THE BASIS OF A THESIS ARGUMENT AND, ULTIMATELY, THE SUCCESS OF A PROPER DESIGN APPROACH. A COUNTER APPROACH THE PUBLIC MUST BE MORE COGNIZANT OF ITS SURROUNDINGS; MORE SPECIFICALLY, WE AS DESIGNERS AND OCCUPIERS OF SPACE MUST BE RESPONSIVE OF THE IMPACT THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT PLACES ON SOCIAL AND CULTURAL RELATIONSHIPS THAT ENCOMPASS AND AFFECT OUR VERY OWN BEING. THE PHYSICAL, SOCIAL, AND EMOTIONAL SEPARATIONS THAT SEVER POTENTIAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR COMMUNITY AND IDENTITY ARE CONTINUOUSLY IGNORED, THUS CREATING INHABITABLE, WORTHLESS VOIDS IN THE URBAN FABRIC. IN ORDER TO RE-ESTABLISH AND PRESERVE A SUCCESSFUL COMMUNITY IDENTITY, WE MUST ACTIVATE THESE RESIDUAL SPACES BY BRIDGING SOCIAL AND CULTURAL ISSUES THROUGH GATHERING, AWARENESS, EDUCATION, AND CREATIVE EXPRESSION.

A CITY IN NEED
FOR DECADES, FLINT, MICHIGAN HAS BEEN A CITY SEVERELY SUFFERING FROM THE FALL OF INDUSTRIAL MANUFACTURING AND THE JOBS IT PROVIDED THIS ONCE PROSPEROUS CITY. THROUGHOUT THE EARLY 20TH CENTURY, HOWEVER, FLINT REAPED THE BENEFITS OF BEING INSEPARABLE FROM THE AUTOMOBILE, AS THE CITY SEEMINGLY MULTIPLIED OVERNIGHT AND QUICKLY BECAME SYNONYMOUS FOR MASS PRODUCTION AND BUILDING AMERICA’S FUTURE. MAIN CHEVROLET AND BUICK CENTERS QUICKLY ESTABLISHED A HOME IN FLINT, AND PROVIDED SUFFICIENT JOBS FOR THE RAPIDLY INCREASING POPULATION OF FLINT. THE AUTOMOBILE AND THE CITY ULTIMATELY BECAME HIGHLY DEPENDENT ON EACH OTHER WHICH UNFORTUNATELY LED TO THE EVENTUAL DOWNFALL OF THE CITY, AND THE MONUMENTAL RUINS THAT REMAIN AS A MEMORY OF WHAT ONCE WAS. SADLY FOR TODAY, FLINT IS STILL GOING THROUGH THE AFTEREFFECTS OF THE DOWNFALL OF THE AUTO INDUSTRY AS IT CONTINUES TO HEMORRHAGE ITS RESOURCES, PEOPLE, IMAGE, AND APPEAL. THE POPULATION TODAY IS NEARLY HALF OF WHAT IT ONCE WAS IN THE 60’S AND CONTINUING TO LOSS OVER 1% OF ITS POPULATION EACH YEAR. THE HOLES THAT REMAIN IN THE BUILT FABRIC ARE MASSIVE AND SEEM TOO OVER POWERING TO HELP SAVE THIS CITY AND BRING IT BACK TOGETHER. ADDING TO THIS, POVERTY LEVELS ARE ASTRONOMICALLY HIGH, CRIME LEVELS ARE ONE OF THE HIGHEST IN THE COUNTRY, SCHOOLS ARE CLOSING DOWN AND FORECLOSURES ARE A COMMON OCCURRENCE ON NEARLY EVERY STREET. IT SEEMS AS THOUGH THE IMAGE OF FLINT AS A CITY OF PRODUCTION IS FINALLY OVER. RECENTLY, NEW VISIONS FOR THE FUTURE OF FLINT HAVE ARISEN AS ATTEMPTS HAVE BEEN MADE TO HELP REBUILD THE CITY INTO A PROSPEROUS TOURIST DESTINATION BUT THIS IS NOT WHAT FLINT WAS OR EVER MEANT TO BE. INVESTORS FORKED OVER MILLIONS OF DOLLARS TO REBUILD THE DOWNTOWN, CREATE AN AUTOMOBILE THEMED AMUSEMENT PARK, AND A HIGH END HOTEL IN HOPES TO BRING POSITIVE APPEAL AND WEALTH TO THE DYING LOCAL ECONOMY. THE PEOPLE NEVER CAME. WHAT THE ILLINFORMED COMMUNITY AND INVESTORS FAILED TO REALIZE WAS THAT FLINT HAD A VERY SPECIAL INTRINSIC CONNECTION BETWEEN ITS CITY AND PRODUCTION AND THIS RELATIONSHIP WHICH HELPED BUILD ITS FOUNDATION AND VERY EXISTENCE CANNOT NOT BE IGNORED AND FORGOTTEN. THE MODEL OF PRODUCTION, WHATEVER THE CASE, MUST REFLECT AND ENGAGE LARGER NATIONAL AND GLOBAL ISSUES THAT NOT ONLY ADDRESS THE CURRENT NEEDS, BUT PERHAPS MORE IMPORTANTLY, PLANS FOR THE FUTURE. THROUGH THE RETROFITTING AND RE-USE OF THE DILAPIDATED FACTORY BUILDINGS OF FORMER BUICK CITY, I WILL BE EFFECTIVELY TRANSFORMING FLINT’S ROLE OF PRODUCTION FROM THE AUTOMOBILE TO AGRICULTURE; A NEW VITAL OPTION TO SUSTAIN AND HELP REBUILD THE SUFFERING COMMUNITY OF FLINT WHILE INVESTING IN ITS POSITIVE FUTURE. THROUGH THE SITE LOCATION AND PROGRAMMING STRATEGY, VIABLE OPTIONS WILL ENGULF THE SURROUNDING COMMUNITY IN A NEW LOCAL FOOD ECONOMY WHICH WILL PROVIDE A YEAR-ROUND FOOD SOURCE, ENSURE FOOD SECURITY, AND PROMOTE BIO-DIVERSITY. UTILIZING THE NEWEST TECHNOLOGIES IN PLANT GROWTH, MY DESIGN PROPOSAL WILL INCORPORATE A MULTI-FACETED AND ADAPTABLE APPROACH TO GROWING, COLLABORATION, PROCESS, METHOD, DISTRIBUTION, RESEARCH, AWARENESS, EDUCATION, AND OUTREACH. BY CENTRALIZING THIS NEW SUSTAINABLE APPROACH TO AGRICULTURE IN THE HEART OF FLINT, I WILL BE ABLE TO FILL THE ONCE VOIDED INFRASTRUCTURE OF THE PAST AND TRANSFORM IT INTO A NEW CENTER OF COMMUNITY IDENTITY FOR FLINT’S FUTURE.

ANOMALOUS AGRICULTURE: RE-ESTABLISHING VITAL IDENTITIES [BUICK CITY, FLINT MI/SPRING 2011] +process sketchbook available
[05]
Responding directly upon extensive thesis arguments to combat residual spaces and lost community identities, the goal of the final project design was meant to be an expansive but yet very practical and manageable envisioning effort for the suffering community of Flint. The end result is a multi-faceted programmatic scenario building upon the ideas of urban farming as a new viable mode of production and as a catalyst for building community relationships, support, and new identities within the core of Flint.
The program is comprised of a variety of environmentally controlled growing techniques and technologies implementing a vast array of growing methods meant to involve the public in a new proactive lifestyle. This allows the community to engage and experience the building in infinitely many ways, which in effect, creates a new living/learning center for the purpose of fostering meaningful relationships and identities in a place that was once deemed inhabitable and otherwise worthless.

STUDY ABROAD: CITIES ON THE WATER [VENICE + AMSTERDAM/SUMMER 2010] +sketchbook available
[06]
Throughout the study abroad experience, the goal was to refine and strengthen sketching skills utilizing various techniques to record and convey information, emotion, and the mood of everyday observations. Utilizing only a .2 mm micron pen, the challenge was to effectively map out a specific scene, relationship, or desired characteristic of an object or space in as little time as possible. Effectively, this strategy of mapping and documenting sites and places helped to develop fast sketching and detailing techniques while building overall confidence. I not only had to develop and learn to successfully map large spaces by walking and measuring distances with my eyes, but I also had to develop a sketching skill set to properly communicate the feelings and characteristics of a space. This was a great challenge and yet very rewarding to take from my experience abroad. ›Micron on paper + digital photography + Photoshop. 06.12.10/VENICE, ITALY

PHOTOGRAPHY EXPLORATIONS [35MM FILM/SPRING 2010 + DIGITAL/SUMMER 2010-SUMMER 2011]
[07]
Photography and the process of capturing a compelling scene or moment has become an ever growing passion for me. Starting in a film class, I developed the valuable dark room skills such as the cautious process of developing film, operating the enlarger machine to adjust and position negatives, using contrast, f-stop, and aperture settings to fine tune images, and finally, utilizing the photo development stages to produce a tonally rich black and white composition. Ultimately, the challenge and frustration of film technology has helped me shape an attention for detail, the pride to produce compelling images, and a better appreciation of the final product as the image making process is very personal, precise, and delicate.
This idea has continued to develop both through my foreign study abroad experience and currently in which a high quality digital camera is used. However, instead of approaching a shot based on very deliberate composition settings, my goal is to now approach the same shot on the premises of giving the image life and having the ability to create an emotion. That is why I will continue to shoot subjects and scenes that are not based solely on a given appeal, but because of the creative potential they possess. I feel this, ultimately, allows me to have more freedom when it comes to photographing various subjects allowing for an openness to capture potentially overlooked or hidden qualities and relationships that prove to be compelling.
