“Serving the Community since 1960”

Alan Penn, the 2011-12 International President of Kiwanis, will be swinging into San Diego as part of his extended tour through the Cal-Nev-Ha Kiwanis District. President Penn, a longtime member of the Medina (Ohio) Breakfast Kiwanis Club, is a special guest of Cal-Nev-Ha District Governor Dick Olmstead and his wife, Cheryl. Penn, along with his wife Jeri, has made several stops in Cal-Nev-Ha between June 28th and August 5th, visiting Kiwanis Clubs and service events in Reno-Sparks, Benicia, Sacramento, Clovis, Paso Robles, Rancho Cucamonga, Glendale, Orange County, and finally San Diego. The four San Diego-area Lieutenant Governors (Shirley Nakawatase of Division 11, Doug Beckham of Division 21, Richard Higgins of Division 31, and Warren Sargent of Division 37) will host the President’s visit here. Lt. Governor-Elect Tom Bilotta of the Scripps-Mira Mesa Club is also helping to plan the event. President Alan Penn Our own club President, Luisa Moore, is spearheading our club’s effort to build up the reserves at the Cushman & Jacobs San Diego Food Bank. Club members are encouraged to bring at least two packages of canned food or other non-perishable dry goods for contribution to the charity. Kiwanis members and SLP volunteers from Division 100 (all of San Diego County) will gather at the Food Bank in Miramar on Saturday, August 4th, beginning at 1:00 p.m., to compile the donations. A light lunch will be served. The Food Bank facility is located at 9850 Distribution Avenue in Miramar, and is free to Kiwanis members. The Cushman & Jacobs San Diego Food Bank serves roughly 350,000 people per month in San Diego County, including hungry schoolchildren, military families in need, and and lowincome senior citizens. The Food Bank estimates it distributed over 20,411,000 pounds of food in the 2010-11 fiscal year, the equivalent of more than 15,946,000 meals. With the new school year approaching, President Luisa is also encouraging club members to contribute a small amount to help provide donations of school supplies to students and schools in those areas which need the most aid.

Kiwanis Tidings by Luisa Moore This month our club is focused on feeding those who are devoid of food. On August 4th we have an opportunity to donate the food we have collected, along with other service clubs, to the San Diego Food Bank. Those attending the District Convention in Santa Clara later this month will be involved in packaging food for feeding 40,000 people. Some of these food items will be distributed in San Diego. Please remember when purchasing your groceries to purchase some items for those who need our help.

Dear G.A.G. Kiwanians, We, the members of SDSU Circle K, would love to say “thank you” for all of the help you have given us during our recent participation in the Embrace the Philippines donations contest! SDSU Circle K received $1,000.00 for being the club that brought in the most donations by the end of June, for the recent May disaster in the Philippines. With your help, we were able to donate 50+ cases of water for the cause! We received the check for $1000.00, and I have attached the picture of several of our members receiving the check for publication in your club newsletter (see Page 1). Again, thank you all for your help, and have a great day! Sincerely, Gerald Biando SDSU Circle K Kiwanis Family Chair

Passport To Life Offers Guidance and Hope for Troubled Teens The upcoming August 14 Passport to Life event is a career and education expo for youth who are on probation. Now in its fourth year, it has grown from the belief that all youth, including adjudicated youth with probation histories, have the ability to succeed if they have the right training, support, and opportunities. The goal of the event is to improve their chances to succeed in life by promoting education, training, and career exploration. This will be the third year the Kiwanis Club of Grantville-Allied Gardens has volunteered to feed the 800 youth and 200 adults who attend this amazing event. Our members not only bring all the food, we will also be on hand to cook 1,200 hot dogs and give each participant water, chips and cookies. This event will offer a morning of motivational speakers including Chef Jeff Henderson, who will share their stories of overcoming the odds including homelessness, juvenile detention, and gang involvement followed by break out sessions and a community vendor fair. We are glad to support this worthwhile event, in the hopes that it will indeed make a difference in the lives of the young men and women we will serve! When: Tuesday, August 14th, 2012, 8:00 A.M. - 2:00 P.M. Where: San Diego City College, 1313 Park Boulevard, San Diego, CA 92101 Who: Qualified youth on probation or have a probation history What: Participants will have the opportunity to hear from guest speakers followed by workshops, an exhibitor fair, a fashion show, and a skateboard presentation.

Two Charter Members

Bobby Frankhouser, charter member of the Grantville-Allied Gardens Kiwanis Club, poses with Past Lt. Governor Mike Pent, charter member of the Tierrasanta Kiwanis Club at an Interclub meeting on July 18th. The Kiwanis Club of Grantville-Allied Gardens helped to build the Kiwanis Club of Tierrasanta, and held its charter banquet on May 14th, 1976 at the Miramar Naval Air Station Officers Club, according to John Peterson. Division 21 Kiwanis Lt. Governor Fred Melvin and G.A.G. Kiwanis President Cal Pancheri led the team effort to recruit enough members to charter the club and get it off to a great start. Today, Tierrasanta Kiwanis holds its meetings every Wednesday morning, and is still one of the top clubs in Division 21.

Summarized by Kathy Butterstein

July 5th, 2012 July kept away a few of our frequent guests, as David Rozul was our only Circle K visitor, but Key Club had two members here today. Serra High School’s Anthony To, Lieutenant Governor of Key Club Division 21, was accompanied by our Patrick Henry Key Club Vice President, Margaret Do. Our Kiwanis Lt. Governor of Division 21, Doug Beckham, was present and accounted for, along with future leaders Molly and Bryson Blume. David, our Immediate past Circle K Lt. Governor, reported that the SDSU club won 3rd place in overall achievement at the Circle K International Convention in New Orleans. David Rozul also received the Distinguished Lt. Governor’s Award from Circle K International. Our K.O.D., Yolie McLeland, enlightened the membership with some American history questions. She then introduced our speaker, Rex McGrath of Point Blank Enterprises, manufacturers of body armor. McGrath demonstrated the different types of personal defense used by police and the U.S. military, from soft body armor to hard body armor, plus concealed vests. All are tested by the government. Although there were 510 police officers killed in action from 1998 to 2009, there were 3,000 more who survived because they had been using body armor. July 12th, 2012 Lots of visiting dignitaries today including college student Angie Elmore (Gene’s granddaughter), SDSU Circle K members David Rozul, Gerald Biando, and Jamille Cabacungan, and an Ocean Beach Kiwanis interclub composed of Jim and Melanie Nickel. Also joining us today was a guest of John Crawford, Valerie Hofheins, who is the incoming president of the Kiwanis Club of North Las Vegas, Nevada. We were also happy to welcome Dave Smith from the Torrey Pines Kiwanis Club, plus PHHS Key Club alumnus Bitung Wang (Class of 2005), and Margaret Do, the current Vice President from our Key Club at Patrick Henry. We were especially honored to have our Lt. Governor Elect-Designate for Division 21, Barry Kistler of Point Loma Kiwanis, along with his wife, Ruth. Melanie Nickel put in a happy $100 from the O.B. Kiwanis Club for our help at the recent Ocean Beach Kite Festival. The K.O.D. for the morning was Billie Moore, who did a great fundraising job starting with Terry Shanklin as the secret greeter. It seems that almost no one shook his hand since he always appeared too busy. Billie and club President Luisa Moore also served as our program for the day, sharing some of their experiences at the Kiwanis International Convention in New Orleans, Louisiana. Luisa had a number of fundraising opportunities to promote, including Kiwanis Peanut Day, which has been an effective fundraiser for many other Kiwanis Clubs. David Rozul also gave us some highlights of the Circle K International Convention (also in New Orleans) using an impressive slide show set to music. Next year’s Kiwanis International Convention will be held in June 2013 in the beautiful city of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada... a wonderful place for a convention! For those who are interested, the Cal-Nev-Ha Kiwanis District is offering an Alaskan cruise as an optional sidebar to next year’s Convention. Visit www.cnhkiwanis.org for more information.

The Defense Vests: At left, guest speaker Rex McGrath demonstrates a bulletproof vest commonly used by law enforcement agencies across the country. At right, Bryson Blume tries one on for size.

July 19th, 2012 Maggie Conway, our longtime friend from the Edward Jones office, surprised us this morning by serving as an honorary K.O.D.! She questioned us on Olympic sports to get us in the mood for the upcoming London games. Bruce Drake joined us to thank us for our continuing support of our local Boy Scout troop. We were happy to welcome Mike Servais back for his second visit. Mike is a Kiwanian from the Pacific Northwest who recently moved to San Diego, so we are glad to help him settle in to our community! Also joining us were members of the PHHS Key Club: President Vanessa Nguyen, Vice President Margaret Do, and club member Kathy Khemmanivong. Our own John Crawford (a past club President from 2007-08) gave a very informative presentation on the Eliminate Project. With The Eliminate Project, Kiwanis International and UNICEF have joined forces to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus. This deadly disease steals the lives of nearly 60,000 innocent babies and a significant number of women each year. To eliminate MNT from the Earth, more than 100 million mothers and their future babies must be immunized. This is the goal of Kiwanis clubs worldwide. July 26th, 2012 David Rozul from Circle K was our K.O.D. today, and he did a fine job quizzing us on the history of SDSU. It seems like he’s been a member of our club for years already! David was there along with another SDSU Circle K member, Jamille Cabacungan, plus visitor Mike Harding, a guest of Gene Elmore. Valerie Hofheins, President-Elect of the North Las Vegas Kiwanis Club, was back again as a guest of John Crawford. President-Elect Gary Blume announced that the Club Installation Banquet will be held on September 22nd with a “Pirates of the Caribbean” theme. Our speakers today were Pat Murphy and Bill Howard, who oppose the proposed Quail Brush power plant slated for construction near West Hills High School in Santee. Their talk covered energy, power plants, and alternative energy sources such as solar power. It was quite electrifying!

CLUB WEBSITE TO REOPEN SOON Due to a security issue, as a matter of safety, our club’s website was shut down last month. At a meeting on July 23 of the Website Committee, a new name was selected for our new presence on the Internet: www.alliedgardenskiwanis.org. Although there’s still a lot to be done, it should be up and running soon. Thanks to Mary Haas and Kathy Butterstein for their hard work!

Many of our members enjoy the relaxation (and the food) at the beach at Mission Bay on Friday evenings at 5 to 9 pm. Everyone pitches in with food, and bring their own chairs and drinks as they enjoy the sunset and the sea gulls. Bobby Frankhouser and his son, Brian, get there early to set up the fire pit with planks of wood for a huge bonfire. They make hamburgers, hot dogs, and toasted marshmallows, and the potluck group pitches in with fabulous dishes. Take an opportunity to join us for the next big beach bonfire!

Junior Wheelchair Sports Camp Returns August 11th Each summer, wheelchair campers, ages 4-18 years old, are introduced to a variety of adaptive sports including wheelchair softball, basketball, tennis, rugby, archery, bocce ball, outrigger canoe, waterskiing, sailing, yoga, handcycling, and much more. The week-long camp’s goal is to help establish the building blocks of an active life through the introduction of adaptive sports and recreation. Our club provides all the food for the final Family Day BBQ, under the guidance of event organizer Kim O'Hara. Fourteen Kiwanians cooked burgers and served salads, chips, drinks and desserts to all the athletes and their families and friends. The young athletes are an inspiration to us all and we are proud to play a part in this great community event.
