THE REEF > by Diseño Earle Architects Most people assume good architecture is the product of talented architects. In fact, good architecture requires special clients – persons or organisations with the vision and courage to demand something extraordinary for their building projects. With this in mind, Diseño Earle began work on a nine-storey hotel – a project that, in the words of its client, was to be an iconic “World Landmark”

SITE. The five-star hotel anchors a waterfront development in Abu Dhabi, one of the most modern cities in the region and the world. At once, the building needed to address dramatic views to and from the water, while relating to its urban context, the bustling metropolitan centre of the United Arab Emirates. Both the client and the architect envisioned a dramatic, sculptural design for the hotel that would create a bold visual identity, not only for itself, but for the entire waterfront district. DESIGN. Drawing inspiration from its waterfront site and

the client’s desire for an efficient, environmentally sensitive building, the hotel borrows forms from nature, emulating the abundant coral structures found in the nearby Arabian Gulf. Imagined as a reef, the hotel is broken into smaller wings and branches which embrace the site, defining welcoming courtyards to front and rear. Building entries are marked with dramatic cantilevered overhangs – as if underwater, the hotel appears to float upward, weightless above its waterfront site, waving gently like a fan reef. Like coral, the hotel’s interior is composed with gentle curves, flowing lines, and vibrant colours. With expansive waterfront views, the main lobby features a triple-height lounge rendered in vivid reds and pinks to create a striking and dramatic entry. Above, the individual rooms and suites employ smooth, sinuous forms to create a serene, almost aquatic experience for the guests. Each room assumes its own unique palette of reds, oranges and purples that, from the exterior form as a single,

multi-coloured mosaic. At night, these colours shine through the building’s skin to create a brilliant waterfront light show, marking the hotel on the skyline. CONSTRUCTION. The hotel is constructed of cast-in-place concrete slabs on splayed concrete columns. Featuring floor to ceiling glass at every floor, the building is shaded with a coral-like scrim of concrete branches. As a complete wrapping, the skin helps the building to read as a single iconic form. Unbroken by individual floors or windows, the apparently random skin is composed of a single panel type, which is mirrored, flipped and rotated to create an organiclooking skin. A half metre in thickness, the concrete prevents direct sunlight from striking the glass for most of the day, reducing heating loads on the building.

The hotel draws sustenance from its surroundings like a plant, using abundant sunlight and seawater to help power the building. A series of rooftop photovoltaic panels generate the building’s electricity, while passive solar collectors are used to preheat water used for showers and laundry. In addition, the building takes in cool seawater to reduce the load on its air-conditioning system. x

Many hoteliers spend an awful lot of time just fluffing up scatter cushions and carving microscopic en suite showers from pint-sized shoe cupboards – but since when is hosing yourself down in a weenie wet-room good enough? Is it enough to find your mini bar is in fact a bag of nuts and a pillow mint; or that in-room entertainment consists of CNN on an endless loop? Not for us, when we get away for a weekend we need inspiration, we need spoiling, we need to take our minds far, far from the glossy mag assembly line and fatten up on cool designer data. After a long steam bath of a summer, we all need a little kick to get ourselves back up to full speed – it’s all for your benefit in the end – so check out our mad motels and hooky hotels in cool sites, and maybe we’ll see you there.

Harlingen is somewhere in Holland, it doesn’t really matter where, because Holland is as flat as a billiard table and lashed with North Sea winds right across the board. However, to add some spice to their cosy little Beneluxian existence, the folk at Vuurtoren have decided to convert a lighthouse, a lifeboat and a harbour crane into clunky - but very funky - lodgings. These harbour-side holiday homes keep their outer functional forms obviously, but inside magically transform to chic, state-of-the-art weekend break hotels. We love ‘em; an elevating experience that’ll really float your boat; although the reading light was a bit severe in one.

Sometimes, half your weekend is taken up just getting there, well this guesthouse solves it all. Everland is a travelling hotel, a one-roomed futuristic work of art that doubles as a guesthouse. Everland is cool, exclusive, unique and mobile. Admittedly it won’t appear in your back yard, but the idea is to attach Everland to an art museum - absolutely anywhere - making it a public work of art by day and a private space by night. I’d feel sorry for any art critic wandering in on me at 8am, but maybe that’s the idea in a Tracey Emin kind of way. Everland is Paris bound at the moment but if it ever hits the GACMA we’ll let you know.

This hotel has got more bars than Butlins, Youth Hostel Celica in Ljubljana is an ex-prison block. The cells, now artistically renovated, offer a touch more opulence than the old days but it is still a chilling building; a tormented history screaming out with every rattle of your room keys. Each cosy 4x4 is laden with goodies, some of it designer, with en suite toilets and of course, topical floor to ceiling iron curtains. If you fancy a weekend away from it all there is always the solitary suite, but don’t forget to take some snouts in with you – a weekend down there is a long, long stretch.

Propeller Island City Lodge is pure unadulterated art. Each room has an inspiring artistic theme, like the Flying Bed suite – where grandma’s bed appears to float above a slanted floor, or the reflection room with wall to wall to floor to ceiling mirrors. Take our word for it; each design is stunning and laden with artistic provenance. Imagine waking up after a heavy Steiner-supping Berlin night in the upside-down room, only to find your Paracetamol are stuffed in a drawer hanging from the ceiling, ouch!

Are you barking up the wrong tree when it comes to accommodation? Well this could just make things much, much worse. For a start, having a chain-saw artist as an hotelier might not truly appeal, but at least it’s not in Texas. The Dog Bark Park Inn is in Cottonwood, Idaho and no, our taste hasn’t gone to the dogs – but beagle is definitely about! This backwash B+B is in fact a giant two-storey wooden doggy. The hound’s head doubles as a cosy boudoir and the dining area is deep in its growling underbelly - so your dinner’s in the dog - as they say. This worryingly obsessive man’s best friend motel also offers ‘stay and learn’ packages like home candle making and Dutch oven cookery… I thought that was something that happened under the dowg’s duvet?

The Mirage

State-of-the-art design incorporates sustainability features that reduce the carbon footprint to practically zero, but by no means has the design element of the building been forfeited over ecological function.

The luminous main living area hovers above a ‘mirage’ of water which appears to merge with the swimming pool but is in fact part of the cooling system. Complemented by solar panelling, smart glass technology, geo-thermal heating systems and water management processes, waste and running costs are reduced to an almost selfsufficient level.

Upon approach, a ‘floating’ glass walkway runs to the entrance of a double height glass atrium enjoying stunning 180º views and comprising the main living room, dining room and kitchen, two terraces, swimming pool plus separate guest accommodation situated at the far end of the plot.

Stairs lead down to a lower level housing three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a master suite, TV room, family living room and an en-suite study. This is a strikingly original home packed with a design & construction tel: 689 21 79 77 wealth of design and sustainability features epitomising 21st century luxury living.
