In working on science projects, there can be a lot of issues when it comes to leadership. There are a lot of people that think that they are the smartest person in any room and that is fine for them to think, but it becomes an issue when they lord that over the people below them.
Finding the right person to lead science based projects is a process that takes more than just assigning leadership to the smartest person in the room or even the person with the idea at times.

If you are not high IQ, you might not make the best leader in a science based project. Having a high IQ is important in these projects because you can’t just phone things in on the science stuff. You need at least enough knowledge to be able to comprehend and communicate the technology that you are designing.
It also requires a lot of intelligence to know how to run a company.
Part of the reason that you separate the business and creative sides are because they have very different functions and goals and can distract from each other.
Ultimately, it takes a balance of the two to have a successful company and you hope that you can honor the creative side as much as possible, but that is where an Einstein level leader is needed to make the key business decisions that keep everything running.
You have to be able to look across all departments of your company and then even out into the marketplace to know your competitors if you are going to be successful as a leader. That requires a lot of critical thinking skill and intelligence.
It also requires a lot of emotional intelligence to be a great leader. Some of the problem of being too wrapped up in the creative is that you are isolated to your own project.
The duty of a leader is that they are building relationships and doing research to understand how things will be received. They are in charge of understanding everyone as much as they are in charge of steering the project. As much as it is important to know the landscape, it is important to know your own team as well.
I met someone once on a project and noticed his natural leadership skills when he noticed something in one of his employees that nobody else did and took her aside for a talk. He helped her get over what was bothering her when nobody else knew she was bothered. It is that kind of empathy and intelligence that is necessary to be a leader. Whether on a science project or any other, you need more than just the smarts to lead.
