Dear Friends, Colleges and universities across America are increasingly talking about the importance of connecting intellectual inquiry with the real world. This approach to education has many names — experiential education, cooperative education, internships — but it is not new to Johnson & Wales University.

Student engagement is a crucial component of successful higher education in the 21st century.

Since the time of our founding 100 years ago, when Mary Wales said, “We should teach a thing not for its own sake but as a preparation for what lies beyond,” Johnson & Wales has embraced the notion that a properly educated person should have the kind of professional preparation and intellectual vitality that integrated learning provides. So we welcome the conversation and look forward to continuing our leading role in it.

It pleases me that none other than the National Society of Experiential Education recently recognized Johnson & Wales with its highest honor, the William M. Burke Award. Accepting that honor on behalf of the university, I told a gathering in Baltimore that JWU is passionate about experiential education, that our philosophy starts at the highest level of the university as part of our guiding principles, and that we unabashedly believe that student engagement is a crucial component of successful higher education in the 21st century. Tens of thousands of students continue to benefit from this model, and in the end our economy and our society are better for it.

There are countless examples of how students benefit from connecting their academic programs with In 2014, on the occasion of our engagements in the world beyond centennial anniversary, JWU remains the classroom. We’ve selected just a fully committed to preparing few of those stories to illustrate the students for professional success uniqueness of a Johnson & Wales through rigorous academics, relUniversity education, and I hope you evant workplace skills, community are as inspired by them as I am. leadership opportunities and a Sincerely, unique career education model.

the keys to student success — in life and career. It seems appropriate, in this centennial year, to remember that Johnson & Wales University has been serious about engaging students in an experiential learning environment for a very long time. The premise, according to Marie Bernardo-Sousa, LP.D., senior vice president of administration, “is to provide students with a supportive environment while at JWU to help them achieve their goals and also build a network that will aid them in achieving success both personally and professionally.” From the start, engagement involved understanding students’ career aspirations and tailoring an individual curricular roadmap to help them reach their goals. In the 1920s, that might have meant private tutoring for a known job at the Providence Telephone Company. Today, the spectrum is broader, providing opportunities for students to study abroad, work an internship, lead a club or start

a business, with a goal of “giving students the breadth and depth of experience that will serve them in their chosen professions and in their lives,” says Bernardo-Sousa, who has been a leading voice at JWU on the issue of engagement. In its 2017: The Centennial Plan strategic initiative, the university has identified student engagement as one of four pillars that will solidify JWU’s status as an innovative leader whose education is recognized as an effective 21st-century model of higher education. Drawing on its unique history, the university is continuing its pioneering ways in providing students with new and enhanced learning opportunities and experiences. The following pages contain five stories of students and the student engagement opportunities that are preparing them for professional success and lifelong personal and intellectual growth.

Global Citizenship South of Cape Town, South Africa, the streets of Khayelitsha Township are cramped with colorful shacks of mismatched rusty sheet metal. Billowing electric wires link each teetering structure. Garbage, piled and scattered, buries the region. Stray dogs wander the streets. Riding the bus through Khayelitsha Township Anna Inthanonh’s eyes filled with tears. She and a group of JWU students from all four campuses were about to begin a month-long study abroad program to learn and work with children in community centers and camps. They didn’t know what to expect. But

when the bus doors opened, they were welcomed by a community with smiles and happiness, bringing Inthanonh a sense of joy that would change her life forever. Although the web can link us to anywhere on Earth, the best way to learn about the world is immersion in another country or discussing world issues with someone from another culture. Through JWU’s dozens of study abroad programs, internships, and on-campus

experiences, students can become true global citizens. “Successful graduates must be able to think and act with awareness of the world around them,” says Shelley Stephenson, dean of international programs in Providence. To drive that philosophy, JWU formed the Global Learning Committee to embrace diversity, increase opportunities for global learning, incorporate global current events into the classroom, and create global citizens. “By challenging students to listen to others and think about international issues, students gain an increased awareness of and appreciation for the world,” says Denver’s Richard Wiscott, PhD, vice president and dean of academic affairs. “The experience in South Africa brought apartheid to life and changed my perspective on poverty,” says Inthanonh, who is awaiting a Peace Corps assignment. “Now I want to continue to give back to the world.”

Wildcat Spirit Why would a stellar high school soccer athlete choose a university that didn’t even have a team? “I really liked the coaches,” says Denver Campus’s Lucas Prolow, a sophomore centerback for the Wildcats, who is majoring in business administration. “Plus,” he admits, “I wanted to be a part of something just starting up. I wanted to be part of a legacy.” Since 2012, the Denver athletic program has added seven teams, doubling the number of sports teams on campus, and tripling the number of student-athletes. But the rapid growth in athletics has added much more than new faces. “Sports brings an energy to campus and creates a level of pride for everyone,” says Sandee Mott, director of athletics at the Denver Campus. “It legitimizes what we have: real college athletes. Faculty are also engaged. The influx of new students are here not only for sports, but also for the education JWU offers.”

Prolow is a prime example of the kind of student that JWU is attracting to all four campuses through a rapidly expanding athletic program. He also serves as Student Government Association senator for the College of Management, representing and advocating for professors and students. “It’s an opportunity for me to work with professors on another level and collaborate on different projects and plans,” he says. “We love that the fans come to the games to cheer us on,” adds Prolow. “Everyone on the team collaborates toward the same goal. We are like family. There are times I need to push myself. I do it for the team. We represent our school.”

I wanted to be part of a legacy. Lucas Prolow ’17

A Competitive Edge Not many 20-something guys know the difference between bronzer and blush. Thanks to his position on the Johnson & Wales’ Ad Team, which gave him the opportunity to conduct market research for a Mary Kay pitch last year, Sam Glassoff ’14 is grateful that he does. Led by associate professors Oscar Chilabato and Christine Ure, JWU’s Ad Team work has soared to the top in the National Student Advertising Competition. In 2011 and 2012, it placed third on a national level; fourth in 2013 and 2014. And in 2012 and 2013, the team was honored for having the best plans book, nationally.

And agencies have told the team they wish they could present to clients as well as the team presents to them, Chilabato adds. As for Glassoff, he’s landed a prime position with L’Oreal. It’s more than his knowledge of makeup that got him there. “Ad Team definitely gave me the edge over other applicants,” he says. In interviews, he draws on his hands-on experience conducting market research, understanding media buying, building social media campaigns, organizing budgets and more.

“The students really want to win,” says Chilabato, whose experience includes 20 years in advertising “Ad Team was by far the most before joining JWU. “They’ve devel- rewarding time of my entire coloped a real passion for advertising.” lege experience,” reflects Glassoff, When competition nears, the team who was also selected to deliver the student address at Commenceworks around the clock to finalize ment last May. the plans book and rehearse the pitch for groups of Ad Team alumni. “I’m so proud of everything This intense attention to detail we’ve done.” has paid off — with much more

Balancing Act Rebecca Avila combines a full family life with equal parts JWU activities and studies. Student, club leader, wife and mother, she has become accustomed to managing disparate roles. Following high school and without an academic scholarship, Avila’s parents forbade her to take out college student loans. She opted for the Navy, leaving her family in Illinois for duty in San Diego on the USS Sampson. There she met her future husband, became a mother and completed her enlistment. “I knew I was going to get a col-

lege education and I served four years to do that,” she says. Plans for a bachelor’s degree in English changed when, after taking an online class, she realized it wasn’t for her. On a whim, she enrolled in culinary classes and found her passion. When her husband received orders to Newport, R.I., she found Johnson & Wales. “Everything that’s led me here has been the product of just following my passions and seeing where it takes me. I love

what I’ve been involved with here at JWU, especially with JbreW.” JbreW is the student-run brewing club that promotes the responsible appreciation of finely crafted beers and brewed beverages. As president, Avila is planning the club’s 10th anniversary and is already training her successor in anticipation of her graduation next year with a bachelor’s degree in Baking & Pastry Arts and Food Service Management with a concentration in Beverage Service Management. On a brisk and breezy overcast day recently, Avila and fellow club members served up pumpkin spiced ginger ale during Fall Fest. “I have a five-year-old daughter and a very supportive husband who is luckily on shore duty. We’re essentially a military family. Time apart and sacrifice were always going to be part of the deal. It’s something we just work around, and in the end it’s all worth it.”

YEAR I N R E VIE W Johnson & Wales University celebrated the 100th anniversary of its founding during the 2013–2014 academic year, embracing its mission to provide students with an exceptional education that inspires professional success and lifelong personal and intellectual growth. Programs and activities throughout the year — new academic initiatives, student engagement opportunities, fundraising support and centennial celebration — helped bring the mission to life. Whether it was the creation of a Student Innovation Lab in Charlotte or students

giving relief to flood-ravaged communities near Denver, the development of a radio station in Providence or an exchange program between students in North Miami and Rotterdam, JWU put the mission into action.

This was a brand-new kind of residence hall: cooperative-style housing, where it was imperative for each resident to adapt quickly “from a ‘me’ to a ‘we’ mindset,” says Centennial House President Kevin Walton ‘16. Assigned goals for the year included managing the house budget to cover food and utilities, planning meals and menus, and living as productive members of their new neighborhood.

create a home that was self-governing, selfreliant and collaborative. And by all accounts, it has been a success. “Every house resident credits the communal living experience for building leadership skills,” continues Walton. Students learned how to self-advocate in an effective way, and gained experience in self-reliance — leadership skills that can be applied to situations throughout a lifetime of experiences. “Having an incredible amount of diversity, responsibility and coexistence all collide during such a monumental time in a student’s life is something only experience can prove to be true.”

YEAR IN REVIEW HONORING THE CODE: All too often, honesty, accountability and courtesy seem to be falling by our society’s wayside these days. But JWU students have taken it upon themselves to change that by promising to adhere to a collaborative Honor Code while a member of the campus community. Developed by students from all four campuses, and first unveiled and distributed at 2013’s Convocation, the Honor Code focuses on not only academic expectations, but also (and arguably more importantly) on interpersonal respect. It is embedded in JWU’s culture: read and distributed at Fall Convocations and integrated into classrooms, student activities, athletic events and even decor.

“We all commit to following the Honor Code,” says Ronald Martel, vice president of student affairs. “The code brings a sense of pride and consistency in integrity, ethics and academic performance, and standardizes expectations across campuses. We’re proud of our students, and with this Honor Code, we will become an even stronger community.” “Whether on or off campus, our promise as Johnson & Wales students — as Wildcats — is to maintain our commitment to the Honor Code,” says Elena Melekos ‘16, student government president. “Being respectful and responsible is what makes us well-rounded individuals and valuable members of the greater community.”

FLOODING THE COMMUNITY WITH KINDNESS: Historic floods throughout Colorado canceled classes and events for students at the Denver Campus last fall, and devastated surrounding communities. Neighborhoods lost lives and the region suffered unfathomable damage. Fifteen JWU students answered the community’s cry for help and volunteered 45 hours at Bluff Lake Nature

Center, an open space located a few miles northeast of campus. Wildcat Interest Groups for Incoming Students (WIGIS), a committee which focuses on leadership and civility, helped organize this volunteer opportunity. JWU students cleared garbage and broken tree branches, recycled what they could, and uncovered buried paths and trails.

YEAR IN REVIEW CONNECTING WITH FAMILIES: Last fall, JWU launched a new way to keep families connected to campus and engaged in the goings-on of their students. Family Connection, an interactive e-magazine, is emailed quarterly to the families of students from all four campuses.

“Parents want to be involved now more than ever,” says Nancy Hardendorf, director of parent programs at the Providence Campus. “Family Connection lets them know about events and reminders from individual campuses, and highlights everything that JWU has to offer.”

Each issue centers around a theme — say, incoming first-year students moving in — with stories from each campus. Stunning photography highlights feature articles. A parent from one of the campuses greets readers with a welcome letter.

JWU LIVE: Led by the Broadcasting Club, JWU’s first student-run radio station will launch later this academic year from the Providence Campus. Aptly named “JWU Live,” the station will be accessible online via JWU Live’s website and through streaming apps.

The electronic publication can easily target what families want to hear. The editorial board can track open and click through rates to see which parts of the newsletter are of interest to its readers. So far, they’ve gotten it right: Families have passed along rave reviews.

JWU Live will broadcast Wildcat pride worldwide, 24/7, with student-directed programming dominating the airwaves. Shows will include various genres of music, as well as sports, news and entertainment.

“The radio station will be a hands-on learning opportunity for a multitude of different majors, including accounting, production management, creative advertising and marketing,” says student James Amaral ‘17, president of the Broadcasting Club. “Students will work within their field of interest while feeling like a part of something much bigger that’s fun.”

The Broadcasting Club was founded by four Media and Communications Studies majors (including Amaral) and faculty advisor Christopher Westgate, PhD, the same year the new major launched on the Providence Campus. “Our primary goal was to found a radio station,” Amaral adds. “The Broadcasting Club is now known around campus and the anticipation for the launch of the station is palpable.”

CROSS-CULTURAL COLLABORATION: When it comes to cross-cultural marketing, it takes more than a translation to be successful.

The space serves as a venue for entrepreneurial courses, experiential learning opportunities, speaking engagements and other events. It’s also been a magnet for attracting five new entrepreneurship instructors that Jeff Thomas, J.D., School of Business chair, refers to as the “Fab Five.”

He couldn’t have been more right. D’Amico, long-time mentor, volunteer, and Legacy Trustee, passed away in November 2013. His 66-year history of service to JWU began in 1948 as the university’s first faculty member under then-new leaders, Morris Gaebe and Edward Triangolo. A strong supporter of education, D’Amico established the

Louis D’Amico Scholarship in 2007 to provide aid to accounting majors. In his memory, and to recognize a generous gift to the university from his family, the firstfloor presentation center of the Yena Center in Providence will be named the D’Amico Auditorium. The gift from D’Amico’s wife Mary, his children and their spouses — Laurie and Mark Tigan, Louis “Lee” and Martha D’Amico, and Lissa (’98 MBA) and Bennett (’98 MBA) Singer — will be used by the university to advance its most important priorities.

YEAR IN REVIEW STUDENT RELIEF: In 2013, Chancellor John J. Bowen ’77 and First Lady Kathleen Harney established the Chancellor’s Student Relief Fund to provide students with financial support when they face unanticipated financial expenses due to difficult circumstances. “Ensuring that JWU students can stay in school to finish their studies is an important priority for the university,” notes Chancellor Bowen. Fulltime undergraduate students enrolled at JWU and in good academic standing can apply for reimbursement for expenses incurred because of an emergency. A Fund Approval Committee has been established to review applications received online and to interview students seeking support from the fund. Awards to students are considered gifts and documented in tax forms at the end of the year.

The fund is meant to be sustainable and students who have benefitted from it during their undergraduate years are encouraged to make a donation to it when their circumstances improve. FRIENDS GIVING IN CELEBRATION: Innovative. Pioneering. Virtuous. Ambitious. Visionary. Transformative. These are the adjectives applied to Johnson & Wales University by its leaders and enthusiasts to describe a university that has combined industry-focused curricula and ties to employers with individualized career roadmaps for students. To celebrate a century of accomplishment, Conair founder and JWU champion Lee Rizzuto launched a project to raise scholarship funds from friends and acquaintances around the world. Chancellor John J. Bowen ’77 and a number of university colleagues joined

Rizzuto in the fundraising efforts, resulting in more than 150 individuals and organizations contributing $350,000 for scholarships. This total includes an endowed scholarship fund

It all started in 1914 with shared ideas, a single typewriter, and just one student. Founders Gertrude Johnson and Mary Wales launched a new school in Providence that year — one that reflected their high standards, strong business principles, and professionally focused education. Their vision created what JWU remains today: an institution with its eye on the future, preparing students who are passionate about their careers, primed for advancement, and ready for a successful and rewarding life.

JWU honored its roots and accomplishments with a yearlong centennial celebration launched last September. Events at every campus marked the milestone with pride and spirit.
