“After years of struggling with knee damage following an auto accident, my fear of surgery gave way to my bigger fear of a more limited lifestyle - I could no longer even walk my dogs. Johnston Health’s Joint Center scheduled my knee replacement and put me in their Joint Adventure program which included surgery, recovery, special in-house rehab and also a pre-surgery class, which was a huge help. I’m loving my comeback and so are my dogs, Doc & Ruby!” – Sandy Altman Clayton, NC

Make some memories this summer
Summer is here, and while we’ll be partaking of a few of the local options within these pages over the next couple of months, we’ve already had our family vacation. We piled in the car in April and drove a little more than 500 miles to Orlando. We had to check out the new Pandora — The World of Avatar section of Disney’s Animal Kingdom and make another run through Universal Studios. I said drove, but meandered is a better verb. We took an eight-and-a-half hour trip and made it nearly 11 by stopping often for gas, leg stretching and, of course, snacks. We left before dawn on a Sunday and returned in the wee hours of Wednesday Randy Capps morning — which meant we spent exactly 48 hours in Florida. randy@johnstonnow.com We were a bit more diligent on the way back, aside from an unfortunate Dairy Queen incident in south Georgia. The trip was Ethan’s choice, a decision born out of parental guilt for not taking him with us to Saint Martin last year. From a pool that included Los Angeles and New York, it wouldn’t have been my first choice. But I’m glad we had the chance to spend roughly 20 hours in the car together. Shanna and I did what we always do, which is analyze and re-analyze every aspect of our little company. And Ethan did what he always does, which is binge watch stuff on Netflix. We were together, though. We flew together on the Avatar Flight of Passage, we swam together, literally at the hotel and figuratively as we looked for Nemo at one of the live shows, and we laughed together at my inability to find ATMs in Florida. I’m painfully aware that my only son’s childhood is nearly over, so I’m trying to make as many memories as I can before he starts going on his own family vacations. Maybe with a few ideas from the Ultimate Summer Guide, you’ll be able to do the same.

Baseball isn’t always about winning and losing. Sometimes it’s just about playing with heart. Recently, two rival middle school teams came together to share their passion for the sport with a budding player. Neuse Charter Middle School’s baseball team welcomed a kindergartner to join them during their home game against the Four Oaks Middle School Cardinals. While the team wasn’t scouting under-aged talent — or breaking any conference rules — they were inviting a Miracle League of Johnston County player to be an honorary Cougar. Tommy Judge, a 6-year-old kindergartner with a genetic disorder called DiGeorge Syndrome, joined Miracle League in the Fall of 2017. He was paired up with a Neuse Charter School baseball player as his “buddy,” and since then the two boys have grown quite close, sharing a love of the game. Tommy’s condition caused him to be born with a heart defect, cleft lip and palate and a laryngeal web. Because of this, he struggles with developmental delays and feeding issues. Tommy’s mother, Bobbie Judge, said she enrolled her son in Miracle League to help with his self confidence. “He’s an amazing kid,” said Judge. “But sadly, he doesn’t always see that for himself.” Judge said her son loves throwing things and thought baseball would be a natural fit. “I have seen his confidence grow so much,” Judge said. “He’s pretty shy, especially around other kids, but when he’s on the baseball field he’s completely comfortable and happy.” Neuse Charter coach Chase Crocker told his team about the opportunity to volunteer with Miracle League last school year, so when this idea presented itself, Crocker was all about making it happen. One potential curve ball was that Tommy attends Four Oaks Elementary School, and Cougars were playing Four Oaks Middle on the night Tommy was being made an

honorary team member. “We’re just stealing future talent from our rivals,” joked Crocker. “Actually, we were excited to include Four Oaks as part of our festivities to honor Tommy.” When Four Oaks coach Scott Jernigan found out about what the Cougars were doing, he talked it over with his players. “My team was all on-board to do something too,” he said. Tommy arrived in his Miracle League Muckdogs jersey and was presented with signed balls and baseball hats from both teams at the start of the game and a jersey from Four Oaks Middle. Both teams lined the baselines as Tommy threw out the first pitch of the game. He stayed for the entire game and walked the congratulatory line with the teams at the end. While Tommy didn’t say with which team he’d “sign,” he was seen sitting in the Cougars’ dugout during the first inning and cheering for his buddy when he pitched. Two hours after the game ended, Judge said her son had been talking baseball non-stop. “He isn’t very vocal,” she said, “but he was so excited to do this. I can’t thank the teams enough.” For more information about Miracle League of Johnston County, visit miracleleaguejc.com.

NEWS FROM YOUR NEIGHBORS JCC to offer free tuition to qualifying high school graduates Submitted by Johnston Community College
Three JCC Engineering students named Goodnight Scholars Submitted by Johnston Community College
Aaron Pridgen and Britanya Wright are members of the Goodnight Scholars Program Transfer Class of 2021 at N.C. State University. Jose Jimenez Jr. is not pictured.
JCC is offering qualifying high school seniors the opportunity to complete their associate degree tuition-free after graduation. SMITHFIELD — Johnston Community College is pleased to announce Stay the Course, a new scholarship initiative that allows qualifying high school seniors to complete their associate degree tuitionfree after graduation. Current high school seniors who have successfully completed 12 credit hours of Career and College Promise (CCP) classes at JCC while maintaining a minimum 2.6 GPA are eligible for the scholarship that helps them continue their educational journey at JCC. This scholarship provides a seamless transition to college and covers the full cost of tuition and fees for 12 or more credit hours per semester. Students are eligible for up to four semesters of continuous study. Students must enroll full-time (12 or more hours) and must apply for federal financial aid. The scholarship does not cover the costs of textbooks. Scholarship recipients will also receive
specialized advising, career planning services and university and college transfer guidance. “This scholarship will enable qualifying high school seniors to complete their educational pathway, earn their associate’s degree and graduate from JCC in two years or less,” said Dee Dee Daughtry, vice president of instruction. “It’s an excellent opportunity for high school students who have already demonstrated aptitude and success in college coursework to finish what they started at JCC.” JCC offers more than 35 occupational and technical programs of study and three college transfer degrees — associate in arts, associate in science and associate in engineering. Last fall, more than 1,300 high school students were enrolled in college classes at JCC, the seventh largest dual-enrollment program in North Carolina.
SMITHFIELD — Two Johnston Community College engineering students and one engineering graduate are Goodnight Scholars at N.C. State University. Jose Jimenez Jr. of Clayton, Aaron Pridgen of Kenly, and Britanya Wright of Clayton are three of the 15 students chosen for the program’s Transfer Class of 2021. “I am beyond grateful for this amazing opportunity to be able to study at North Carolina State University as a Goodnight Scholar,” Wright said. “I have been watching the Goodnight Scholars program for nearly two years in high hopes that someday I will get the wonderful opportunity. It almost seems unreal that all my hard work and determination for success has paid off so greatly. “I will forever be thankful to JCC for being my first stepping stone towards success,” she added. “Throughout the course of the Goodnight process, JCC offered interview seminars, essay writing workshops and mock interviews. JCC helped me feel more than ready each step of the way. Now I am stepping into N.C. State University with determination, excitement and perseverance.” The Goodnight Scholars Program targets North Carolina residents from low- and middle-income families who aspire to study in a science, technology, engineering, mathematics or STEM education discipline at N.C. State. The value of the scholarship is $20,000 and is renewable for up to four years for first-year students ($80,000 total), and three years for transfer students ($60,000 total). In addition to the scholarship, Goodnight Scholars have access to an assortment of developmental programming focused on their professional and personal growth.
Sally’s Kitchen continues to meet community needs By Bruce Woodard SMITHFIELD — The Smithfield Salvation Army Corps responded to the flooding and devastation caused by Hurricane Matthew by opening Sally’s Kitchen. Major Kari Booth opened an emergency shelter in their gym and started serving three meals a day. Families without power, those flooded out of their homes and the homeless were able to get the help they needed. Clothing was furnished by voucher at no cost through the thrift store.
10 | JOHNSTON NOW
The program was so successful that Sally’s Kitchen is continuing to serve a hot meal to about 100 homeless and other people in need from noon to 1 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday and at 6 p.m. on Thursday. Sally’s Kitchen relies on volunteers to keep its doors open and the meals running smoothly, and the program depends on donations from businesses and individuals for survival. Contact Major Kari Booth at 919-934-9102 for more information.

When we debuted the summer guide last year, it was a rousing success. But, every time we turned a corner and saw a sign for a camp or a Vacation Bible School that we didn’t have, it bugged me. So, this year, we tried our best to make our list even more comprehensive. All because we wanted a good answer to the question that plagues parents during the summer months: What are we going to do today? We hope you enjoy all that Johnston County has to offer this summer, and hopefully, we can help point you in the right direction. Publisher’s note: The illustrations on the cover and throughout the summer guide are courtesy of the students at the Clayton School of Creative Arts. We’d like to thank Tom Hutchison and his talented students for helping us out with some scenes of summer. United Community Bank committed to serving Johnston County customers Submitted by Jim Rose, Regional President, United Community Bank In 1950, a one-branch community bank was founded on a promise to its customers: “treat our customers and each other the way we want to be treated.” This “Golden Rule” philosophy allowed them to hold steady to values of community. They would keep decisions local, relationships personal and consistently focus on the futures of the people who called their one-bank community “home.” Sixty-eight years later, United Community Bank has $12.3 billion in assets operating with 151 offices across Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. While the world has changed, that founding promise of customer-centric service to our community remains. Earlier this year, Four Oaks Bank became United Community Bank. This transition has been an exciting one. Two banks with similar customercentric community banking philosophies combined to offer the resources of a larger institution and expanded customer access to commercial, retail
and investment products and services.
above and beyond for our customers, consistently.
And now, with the additional resources of United, the customers and community of Johnston County will benefit.
Our customers should feel like family because they are our family. Every time we have had the chance, our team has put millions of deposits into the bank of goodwill, and those deposits may just be our most valuable asset.
United Community Bank is consistently recognized for outstanding customer service. In 2018, United claimed the top ranking for overall customer satisfaction in the J.D. Power U.S. Retail Banking Satisfaction Study as highest ranked in the Southeast region for the fifth consecutive year. Forbes included United on their list of the top 100 Best Banks in America in 2018, also for the fifth consecutive year. We know that these honors do not happen without a consistent commitment to cultivating our United culture. We believe our valued customers come to United and stay because of this special culture. This culture has been built not by a logo or a name, but through a thousand gestures, large and small. This may be as simple as a smile and wave to a customer who may need it. United believes in going
Whether you bank with United for your personal or business financial needs, you can trust us to provide you with first-class, user-friendly products and services. We provide that small bank feel with the service options of a bank much larger. When our doors opened in 1950, our founders could never have predicted how we’d grow, but they planted the seeds that have taken deep roots. Those roots of service, values and community continue to shape United in 2018. To learn more about us or to find a location near you, visit us online at ucbi.com. We are honored to be a part of the Johnston County community and we can’t wait to see you come through our door.
Johnston Network on Aging helping to meet seniors’ needs Submitted by Samantha Peterson It probably does not come as a surprise that the population in Johnston County is growing steadily, but what many may not realize is that the county’s senior population is growing as well.
that can help you!’”
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, as of July 2017, 12.9 percent of the county’s population is 65 and older. There are also many in the county’s senior population who aren’t aware of what resources are available to them. That is where the Johnston Network on Aging hopes to help.
“At one of our recent meetings we learned of the long waiting list that exists for Meals on Wheels,” said Peterson. “We know that many of the seniors in our area rely on Meals on Wheels, so we discussed ways we can help create awareness and partner with others in the community to help provide more meals.”
Created in August in 2017, the Johnston Network on Aging (JNOA) is a grass roots group focused on educating the senior population of Johnston County on what resources they have access to and how they can gain access to those resources. The group includes several members of the community who are professionals in the aging industry. JNOA meets on the second Friday of the month at Springbrook Nursing and Rehab in Clayton to brainstorm ways to help. “JNOA started out as a very small group at first looking to see how we could connect with others who provide services to seniors in our area, and also address what resources seniors need the most,” Samantha Peterson, Provider Relations
36 | JOHNSTON NOW
The group also gathers to discuss current issues the senior population is facing and what can be done about it.
Representative with Transitions LifeCare, said. “From there we continue to add new members to our group each month that represent different resources they can offer to seniors.” Melissa Overton, owner of MedicalTraining.me, explains why she joined JNOA. “I joined JNOA because I wanted to advocate for my community,” she said. “At my business, I often hear discussions about the need to pool our resources for the aging and disabled. JNOA is that answered prayer, as we all want to provide the best services and that includes being a resource of knowledge and information for those in need. “When a family is in crisis and frustrated, how wonderful will it be to say, ‘Hey, I know someone
JNOA also seeks to learn more by inviting in speakers to meetings to educate the group members on resources available. “For many years, there has not always been an accurate list of resources that are out there in Johnston County. We are hopeful that through this group we can stay current on the resources available to seniors in our community and help to make an impact on people’s lives,” said Peterson. If you/your organization have interest about joining JNOA or other inquiries, please contact Samantha Peterson at speterson@transitionslifecare.org.
