My name is John T. Nguyen. As of Spring 2017, I am completing my second year in undergraduate Landscape Architecture at Cal Poly Pomona. My educational aspirations consist of acquiring the professionally accredited Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture by the end of Spring 2019. This bachelor’s degree will assist me in pursuing my Architecture career to become a licensed Landscape Architect. I am always keeping myself busy and up-to-date with new design programs and digital visual skills because I craft many inspiritional designs for a better future. I am currently a full-time Undergraduate student in Landscape Architecture at Cal Poly Pomona. I am also a part-time sale associate at The Home Depot. My family and friends describe myself as a motivated and hardworking individual, who has recently completed his Associate in Architecture, achieving excellent grades every subjects. I am interest in an apprenticeship in the landscape architecture field to gain more experience and network. Ultimately, my career goal is to become a fully-qualified,experienced, and national licensed architecture, with the longer-term aspiration of moving into public and big scale project management.

LINE STUDY This project explores the use of lines, lineweights, and patterns. A single line speaks a language, and together they send a message. The design concept is to transform a line to a 2-dimensional drawing, and for the final process is to create a 3-dimensional model. First, I produce a drawing of lines featuring their shape, size, color, and pattern. Next, I use a variety of wooden sticks and guitar strings to represent the different lines from my drawing into a 3-dimensional model. The last step is to cut the flat model into different pieces, and reconstruct them into a structure. Addition to the structure, I have also produced a topography landscape to ground the structure. From this quick and simply project, I was able to learn the simplicity yet complexity of a line. It is amazing to see a single stroke of mark can be intepret through many iterations to become a whole new different object with a unique learning and design purpose.

Diagram II - The process of transforming the model into a structure with a topography landscape model altogether to continue the study defining different lines (left).

PECULIAR TIDE This project explores the malleability of form. I have started out with building index paper models and unfolding them, and next tearing them away and lastly knitting them back to explore the idea of a datum line. Everything I design for every next exercise is a continuation process of the foregoing work that persistently probes for new concepts, such as: the study of strata, topography study, density of materials, etc. The final process is an incorporate three different design theories: interaction of strata lines, a topography that shows the shedding and holding of water, and a plan that utilizes two verbs from Richard Serra’s “Verb List.” My main concept is from the two verbs: of reflection and to inlay. My definition of reflection is about the consideration and collaboration of my previous work to continue integrates it into my new design. From start to end, I basically use my most previous generated plan as you can see in my Diagram A, and literally use the verb “of reflection” to reflect and use it as my new design. Last but not least, I use the verb “to inlay” as a way to stitch two of my plywood models into one. For the technically part, I use an angle grinder to sand, dig, and curve my way around my plan to create different elevations and circulations. I also use a router drill to carve out the analytical shapes from my second wood model to demonstrate the verb to inlay. With my finished model, I was able generate an idea for my title by looking at the inlayed shapes somehow in a way interfere the flow of my main strata. I decide to give my model the name “Peculiar Tide” because of the unusual interruption of these shapes that strangely made it look like they are naturally meant to be there.

- The students gathering on the University Quad to participate in a huge water balloon competition.
- On the other side of the quad, students are learning to catch some waves.
- One of the most popular night activies is chilling with friends in a gigantic volcano hot tub.
- Beach volleyball is one of the most popular sport on the beach. It is a great and healthy way to interact with each other.
- The fun opportunities are endless with the installation of a towering swimming pool for crazy dives and relaxing.
- The campgrounds are for those that enjoy the outdoors. It is the most intimate experience of the night.
CPP LUAU GRADUATION This project display a group collaboration with my partner, Tatsuyuki S, and I. Our design concept is to design a graduation event on campus for all of our graduates of 2016. We wanted to bring the beach to Cal Poly Pomona; therefore, we adopted a Hawaii Luau theme for the main program of this design. We want to welcome our graduates and their families to get loose and hang loose after a long year of hardwork and dedication. It is what we all deserve. We transformed the whole quad into a full on beach activities festival. One section we have the wave generator surfing, and while the other section is a huge volcano hot tub. For the sport enthusiasts, we have also included beach volleyball and a massive water balloon rage fight. Last but not least, a Hawaii Luau is not completed without a heart warming BBQ party, and an awesome concert to celebrate the Class of 2016.
- Live concert is a must-have for every festival. Music and dancing are the two universal languages that connects everyone together.
- What is a good Luau without the food... A huge line of food trucks from every cuisines are awaits to thrill your taste buds.
- Outdoor movie, BBQ, and fireworks are the only way to end a 3-day weekend festival to leave an amazing and unforgetable memory for everyone.
