This project is focus on creating an empowering space through contrast in details. The structure extents from underground to above, with the ground plane acting as a mirror. Positive being above ground and negative being underground, without seeing the section, it may be hard to connect the two together. However, when people discovers this hidden aspect, it will certainly create a few moments of awe. The underground passage will be linked to the Dundas subway line and the underground parking currently below the square. Walking through this underground path will allow the users to look up and through the wooden structure to see the empowering cantilever above. The passage has a staircase that acts almost as a sculpture in the dark graced by light from above. The staircase will lead the users through the wooden structures and cross the plane that separates the old and the new. This transition point is also the exit point to Dundas Square, or it’s an opportunity to continue upward to the space within the cantilever. The cantilever will ultimately allow the visitors to arrive at a destination that provides an elevated view of the square.

Create a prominent structure on a West side of Dundas Square, this provide a sense of enclosure for the sqaure having continuation with the canopy on the North side. This sense of enclosure to create an environment where visitors are more likely to stay at the square and interact with it instead of just passing through it. This also helped create a more defined entrance to the square.

The underground portion of the structure will be accessible from the subway station and underground parking adjacent to it. It will also provide an audio experience create by the subway due to perforations on the walls.

A feature stair created using the materials of the structure aboveground (railing and encasing) and underground (stair treads) will be element that connects the two spaces.

The space underground is a transitional space that is constructed with wood using tranditional methods. The glass above and the cross hatches of the wood will allow light to filter into the space creating a sanctum in the midst of an urban environment.

The space aboveground is a stagnational space constructed to be futuristic. The oculus above creates an resting environment for the space and provides the visuals of the space surrounding it.

There are a series of programmatic spaces that had to be placed in the design with limited GFA, resulting in spaces that would have to be multi-purpose. The overall design takes advantage of the close proximities required by different programs and link them together through the use of the atrium for the interior aspect of the design. As for the exterior, the building connected itself with the surrounding by the material relationship and the circulation relationship, creating a design that would fit nicely in the existing site. The design intent was to derived an atrium in the center of the community theatre that can act as a spill out space for different programs that surrounds it. The space is meant to create a friendly and multi functional environment for the community to take advantage and enjoy.

Completion : December 2015 Partner : Lucas Chong Project : Academic l Integration Studio ll l Community Theatre Softwares Used: Adobe Illustrator CC l Adobe Photoshop CC l Rhinoceros 5.0 l AutoCAD 2016 l Revit 2016 l V-ray This phase of the project is a collaboration between another student and myself in pursuit of developing phase l further. We started this stage by trying to isolate all the interesting aspects of our phase l design and tried to incorporate them together. Our primary concept were similar in the sense that we both wish to create a design that would activate the public realm and create interior paths that connect communal and theatrical spaces. The form was derived from the initial placement of the flexible main theatre and the blackbox theatre. Linking these two volumes is the dominant central atrium which runs east to west for pedestrian circulation. This path branches into the north and south axis into programdriven spaces of greater intimacy. To engage the adjacent lanes surrounding the building, offices and activity spaces are located on grade. In relation to context, it was our desire to continue the openness from the park and the verticality expressed from the adjacent heritage building onto the exterior. Studio spaces which benefit from natural light are positioned in the corner for light entry on two glazed faces. Activity driven spaces are placed on all floors for people to engage on every level of the building.

The interlocking of the geometric units are meant to create a continuity of the programmatic spaces, allowing different uses for singular spaces. The housing unit will be compromise of numerous floor plates, indicating the separation of space with minimum enclosure. The house will also have a staircase that will act as a central core that is used as the main separation of the plates, and allowing natural daylighting and ventilation throughout the building. The rooms will all individually have their sense of separation, due to indirect partitions that can be easily created through the module unit concept.

Michael Snow Art Gallery Completion : December 2014 Project : Academic l Design Studio ll l Artist Dedicated Gallery Softwares Used: Adobe Illustrator CC l Adobe Photoshop CC l Rhinoceros 5.0 l AutoCAD 2014 l Revit 2014 l V-ray The design intend of this project were to develop an art gallery that will be dedicated to a specific artist, the artist of given project was Michael Snow. His artwork often breach the different realms of the senses and intrude reality spatially. I wanted to create a gallery that can represent the concepts he tries to bring into his artwork and organize a layout to retell his story through his works. An exterior screen that is inspired by his earlier work, Blind (1968), is used to create the experience of gradual entering of darkness, this is used to represent his work that brings visual sense to the realm of texture sense and it is used to slowly dim the lighting as the audience enter controlled lighting environments. The organization of the floor plan is meant to create a clear indication of circulation path starting from the moment a person enters the gallery, leading toward the intended path to unfold his story and his work. The spatial conditions required for displaying the art varies drastically since his style changed from over time by experimenting with different medias over the years. By placing his early work in the second level and his later work in the third level, his story can be told through users experiencing the transition of his art style over time.

Colonnade Pavilion Completion : November 2016 Partners: Jason Brijraj, Matthew Lau, David Luong Project : Academic l Competition l London Triumph Pavilion 2017 - Honourable Mention Softwares Used: Adobe Illustrator CC l Adobe Photoshop CC l Rhinoceros 5.0 l V-ray Colonnade Pavilion seeks to reinterpret the concept of tiling using a geologically inspired module that infuses the site, overall form and overriding concepts of the design. The scheme focuses on colonnade based modules, loosely based on columnar jointing forms that result from volcanic rock development. These formations often occur in regular geometric forms in a repeating pattern, much like tiles, however these rock protrusions suggest movement with their various offsets in height. The Pavilion will allow visitors to enter the hanging arrangement of hallow hexagonal tubes that appear to be an organized pattern of elongated tiles when viewed from below. Light and shadow are allowed to filter through the openings and spaces between the modules, mimicking the spacing of tiles. The PVC tubes are hung from a metal framework that is suspended 2.5 meters off of the ground plane using columns that are a part of the cascading arch like form of the pavilion. Also detailed into the structural metal framework, are metal brackets that attach to the many hanging tubes that are easily accessible to visitors, allowing them to pull and retract modules vertically. This allows users to alter the form of the pavilion despite its seemingly rigid tile-like arrangement. When viewed from far away one can notice the alterations in the original static form, that is based on user interactions with the retractable modules. Thus, the scheme is able to present traditional tiling through a regular arrangement in plan, yet still have an element of randomness through move-able components. Colonnade pavilion seeks to unite visitors of the park, both young and old, by engaging with the hexagonal modular forms, in a scheme that infuses the elements of tiling, using static and active arrangements. 39

Intersection Completion : May 2016 Partners: David Luong, Doan-Thy Vo Project : Extracurricular l Design-Built l Bergen International Wood Festival Softwares Used: Adobe Illustrator CC l Adobe Photoshop CC l Rhinoceros 5.0 l V-ray In following the competition theme, “The Green Transition�, this design seeks to represent the harmonious strength between people, space, and materiality. Wood is a sustainable material that is often neglected or overlooked due to its susceptibility to the outdoor environment. By blending both architecture and sculpture, the design seeks to engage the public to explore the interior as well as appreciate the exterior form. The design is comprised of two shapes that are merged together, representing how nature and society are inevitably connected and how society should strive for a harmony between the two to achieve a sustainable way of life. The structure is organized in a way where construction follows a specific order. Once the appropriate pieces are cut, they are put in place one after the other. The order alternates between the two separate shapes. Even in construction, the masses are intertwined. The warping of some of the provided material presented a challenge but was overcome by selecting the best out of the supply. The alternation also allows for gaps within the surfaces of the structure, allowing light and visibility through. In elevation, the center frames the surrounding environment and brings into focus both nature and development. The design allows for interactions within and around the structure, experiencing variaty of spatial qualities.

Tianhua Architecture Planning & Engineering Limited Duration : May 2015 - August 2015 Project : Professional l Housing and Factory Redevelopment Schematic Design l Competitions and Proposals Softwares Used: Adobe Illustrator CC l Adobe Photoshop CC l AutoCAD 2015 l Rhinoceros 5.0 l V-ray This project was a redevelopment project that remodels an existing complex and a factory warehouse turning it into a youth hostel and a multi- functional gallery space. For this projects, tasks assigned includes the digital modeling of the design, as well as presentation renders. Variation of the design was given to me to test and try out during the schematic phase. Then the final renders are presented to client as a proposal. In the same office, I was assigned to teams that focus on schematic designs. The department often deals with proposals for bids, schematic process presentations and competitions. For these projects, tasks assigned mainly includes the digital modeling and presentation renders of the design as well. The final renders are presented to client or submitted to competitions as a proposal.

Hale Coffee Shop Completion : April 2016 Partners: Gregorio Jimenez, Matthew Lau, John Benner, Adrian Chiu, Liam Hall, Stephen Jones Project : Extracurricular l Design-Built l Coffee Shop and Roaster Space Interior Softwares Used: Adobe Illustrator CC l Adobe Photoshop CC l AutoCAD 2016 l Rhinoceros 5.0 l V-ray The Hale Coffee Shop is located in the Junction neighbourhood of Toronto. We were asked by the Toronto based roasters to design the interior of their new cafÊ and production location. Beginning from cherry counter-tops, to a 2x2 modular ceiling installation and undulating wooden counter fronts, there is without a doubt an emphasis on the use of wood. The high ceilings of the space allowed us to create a dynamic and modular ceiling installation that worked well around the existing mechanical structure. During the first visit to the coffee shop, it was an empty canvas filled with opportunities for exploration. Originally, the schematic design was aimed to create a bright and lively environment; taking advantage of the large windows on the front facing façade. The space was anticipated to be complimented by a light colour palette to achieve the perception. We met with the roasters multiple times throughout the design process to share ideas and collaborate to accomplish the final product. At the end, the group came to a consensus on a different approach to the design, one that took on a darker colour scheme to create a warm and cozier environment. The project allowed us to design the build the store from scratch. From the ceiling fixtures right down to the furniture the customers sit on, it is amazing to think that they all were crafted by hand by the roasters and numerous volunteers that took part in the project. 57

We’ve received numerous help to nurture this small start-up from Ryerson University and had many opportunities and learn and grow as designers. Our main service was to design and create personalized marketing sets or products utilizing up and coming systems like 3d printing and lasercutting. We’ve undertook numerous different projects which includes the an open house event at the opening of the Ryerson University Student Learning Centre, personalizing dessert molds and constructing marketing shelves for events, Projects that we would work along with the clients to design and fabricate products or marketing set that they would utilize for special occasions.

The Ryerson [R[ed[U]x Lab often have opportunities for students to be a part of unique installation projects, and I was one of those student that was lucky enough to be part of a number of those projects. This was something that I frequently took part in since my academic career in Ryerson University and it became almost an addiction. By first helping out with just the fabrication stages, more and more critical and important tasks slowly came my way. Every design project always starts with a simple sketch and if that sketch is lucky, it was make it all the way and becomes a real life experience that people can enjoy. [R[ed[U]x Lab really help define me as a person and these experiences are irreplaceable.
