WEEKLY NEWSPAPERS DELIVER! LOCAL ADVERTISING WORKS A 2010 survey conducted by the National Newspaper Association (NNA) affirmed that ✔
86% of adults read a local community newspaper each week as a PRIMARY SOURCE OF INFORMATION for both local stories and advertisements. ✔ This NNA survey clearly showed a rise in local community readership, UP BY OVER 5% since 2005 and growing each year. ✔ The survey also showed that 75% of those readers read most or all of their paper, and that more than one-third of them keep their paper for more than 6 days, enabling them to revisit a story or advertisement at their leisure. 2010 Study: National Newspaper Association/ Missouri’s School of Journalism/ Reynolds Journalism Institute
Other forms of local advertising don’t do the job • Cable/TV Advertising In 1980, there were 7 choices for TV advertising: channels 2, 4, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13 – now there are over 170 cable channels. How can you get your message out when there is only a 1 out of 170 chance that your target customer is watching that channel? And that’s if their TV is on.
• Yellow Pages Two of the three yellow page companies in New York City have filed for bankruptcy. In this economic climate advertisers no longer want to be locked in for a full year without being able to even change their ad.
• Radio With the increased popularity of the iPod, Pandora and commercial-free satellite radio, stations have seen their audience decline over the past ten years.
• Internet What do the vast majority of people do when they log onto a web site and see a pop-up ad? They immediately hit the close button without even looking at or reading the ad.
COMMUNITY NEWSPAPERS ARE STRONG! “Just about all of the research and news reports on the ‘struggling’ newspaper industry have been based on what’s happening at the top 100 major metropolitan newspapers, maybe the top 250,” said Brian Steffens, NNA executive director. “That doesn’t tell the story of the remaining 1,200 daily newspapers or 8,000 community weekly papers in America. Many of those troubled papers started as community papers and then enjoyed decades of growth as they expanded into adjacent communities and surrounding suburbs, becoming regional newspapers and losing that tight community focus. That worked for awhile, but that model may not be as successful going forward. But it doesn’t seem right to paint the rest of our industry with that brush.”
Contrary to all the negative press surrounding dailies, free local newspapers get picked up every week. We offer coverage that you can’t get from the Internet, radio or TV. Local Community News! Whether it’s the championship little league team, what happened at your community board meeting, local political coverage or the 70 other stories in Queens we report on each week, the Queens Chronicle is there. We’ve been reporting on the communities of Queens for more than 30 years, since 1978, and we’ll still be here reporting in 2039. We reach more than 400,000 people each week with coverage you can’t get in any other form.
