Our Puerto Rico ICON Institute team would like to welcome you to our second edition of the Puerto Rico ICON Conference. With a solid roster of top leaders in a wide range of industries and a captivating agenda highlighting relevant topics in business and investment, our ICON Conference positions itself to be the center for innovation. In line with our organizational value of supporting local entrepreneurship, this year’s edition includes Mentorship Day, a free half-day event dedicated to empowering rising entrepreneurs with the tools needed to propel the growth of their small businesses and startups. We understand that for the island to become a leading business destination successfully, its substantial human capital and competitive advantages must be met with adequate resources. At the ICON Institute, we propose to fulfill that missing link: a collaboration among the most extraordinary business minds to create a significant impact on the island. Our nonprofit organization is entirely devoted to Puerto Rico’s economic development, starting with the support of local entrepreneurship. We want to thank you for joining us at ICON 2022, as together we construct a brighter future for Puerto Rico. TAPPING INTO NEW WATER
DESCRIPTION
After Hurricane Maria, Karlos saw how the massive energy and water blackouts left Puerto Rico, especially how everyone had to look for water supplies daily. These events sparked the curiosity that led him to research new ways to achieve alternative off-grid water solutions. WATRIC was founded on the desire to develop technology that can bring people closer to a sustainable future.
WATRIC develops alternative water solutions and makes the most advanced irrigation systems for indoor plants.
ACADEMIC CURIOSITY MEETS INDUSTRIAL DESIGN The team comprises an electrical engineer, Kevin Rivera, and a mechanical engineer, Karlos Miranda.
INDUSTRY Clean Tech. Hardware. Green Energy.
While Karlos is off improving the technology and winning global science fairs in places like Arizona, Los Angeles, and Shanghai, Kevin leverages his experience from General Motors and Pratt & Whitney to design the consumer electronics and micro-controllers required for the company’s products. WORD OF MOUTH & PRESS DRIVING SALES Although still nascent, the company found its first clients through localized promotions and press interviews. To date, the sale of early prototypes to consumers has earned the enterprise almost $20,000.00 BUILDING THEIR FIRST TWO PRODUCTS Thanks to its engineering background, the company has made a product that solves the #1 reason why indoor plants die. Through their water condensation technology, WALTY, an intelligent planter that will never run out of water, will keep plants healthy & hydrated. They compete with other solutions like mobile app watering reminders or other smart planters that only store water for a brief time.

Part of their market research discovered that 50% of households in Puerto Rico own a pet, 25% share their beds with them, and 75% of surveyed women think their pets are more important than any man. Other than the deep relationships owners have with their pets, they identified through a local industry study that the market size for dog foods is $80M, and craft beer consumption rises above $750M annually. SOLUTIONS TO PREVENT LIVED EXPERIENCES Raincoat was inspired by the lived experiences of dealing with insurance and government aid after Hurricane Maria's landfall in September 2017. Door It Yourself started by observing how complicated it is to assemble a door for someone who is not an expert. While watching professionals do it, Lucciano realized that they always need the assistance of a second or third person. Thus, the better door hinge was born: a 1,600-year-old re-designed piece of metal manufactured to present industry standards. The better door hinge lets anyone installing a door do it by themselves, faster and cheaper.
Our patented door hinges allow contractors, builders, and home renovators to install doors by themselves faster and cheaper while also reducing maintenance-associated costs.
ENGINEER TURNED INVENTOR Lucciano Diaz Skoff studied mechanical engineering at the University of Puerto Rico and has five years of experience managing engineering and philanthropic teams.
INDUSTRY Hardware. Manufacturing. Retail.
His father sparked his passion for construction materials, a general contractor who, since an early age, worked alongside his two sons sourcing materials and engaging in development projects across hospitality and healthcare institutions. SMALL DEVELOPERS & FIRST POINTS OF SALE The company’s first clients are developers and construction companies of multifamily properties. The company has just manufactured, with the help of hardware giant TOLEDO, its first batch of door hinges. During the last two months and first quarter of 20233, the company plans to deploy over 100 samples across associations, hardware stores, and other critical points of sale. UTILITY AND DESIGN PATENTS Door It Yourself has been granted two patents for utility and design. The issuance date is no less than two years from today, and both patents have eighteen years remaining of intellectual property protection. Currently, three additional designs are in the works and are estimated to be filed in 2023 to the United States Patent 7 Trademark Office. RAISING $1.5M TO ESTABLISH MANUFACTURING The company seeks up to $1.5M in capital to expand manufacturing capacity, connect and meet with minimum order quantity requirements of distributors, and place the product in the hands of retailers and developers/construction companies. Part of the capital will be utilized to finish the product's packaging and educate consumers through traditional mediums.

Jasmine has led teams building digital products from global nonprofits to startups, advising communities, governments, and businesses across continents on sustainable practices. Looking through her life as an immigrant, Jasmine finds a parallel thread between post-disaster community response and the importance of building communities. In the summer of 2021, Jasmine made Puerto Rico her home to continue building re+connect: a technological solution oriented towards aiding communities to prepare, respond and thrive in times of adversity and uncertainty.
re+connect is a civic technology platform that connects people and data to close the last-mile disaster relief gap and builds long-term resilience for underserved communities.
ACADEMIA MEETS REALITY The team comprises Yiyuan “Jasmine” Qin, Azury LIn, Pamela Silva Diaz, Manveer Kalirai, and Natalia Arcila.
INDUSTRY Civic Technology. Software. Impact.
An all-women team holds degrees in environmental science and management, design, engineering, and management. Together, they are building a minimum viable product and designing around the needs of communities that endured natural disasters in Puerto Rico. $220,000 IN GRANTS AND EARLY DEPLOYMENT re+connect has received grants from MIT, National Science Foundation, Natural Hazards Center, and Environmental Justice Data Fund/Google.org. Since 2019, they have convened 200+ residents, community leaders, civil society, and government representatives. They have conducted 30+ hours of collaborative design workshops, 50+ hours of interviews, and months of ethnographic studies. ALTRUISM REQUIRES MINDFUL ENGAGEMENT re+connect acts on five principles: design with people, bridge the gap, build social bonds at the core, connect for good, and deploy disaster-proof tech. This approach avoids harmful practices from relief efforts post-natural disasters. Jasmine and her team believe these principles include communities in decision-making processes, empower community ambassadors to leverage their strong social network in face-to-face engagements and facilitate the adoption of lightweight applications for preparation, response, and reconstruction. RAISING $1M TO DEVELOP A RESEARCHED PROTOTYPE Following a structured software development roadmap, re+connect is actively fundraising and seeking grants to build the first MVP. Due to the importance of building it together with user partners and grassroots leaders, the $1 million funds will be used for software development and technology infrastructure, collaborative product development, R&D, marketing and engagement, operations, and business development.

INSTANT WEBSITES FOR SOCIAL-FIRST BUSINESSES
DESCRIPTION
PUNY started as a product of a former technology development contract. The founders were hired to create a stand-alone mobile website for a business that only operated and earned revenues on social media. During this development, Jonathan realized they could build a mobile & social-media-first website without purchasing a domain or website builder. This is when PUNY is born.
Sales funnels and instant mobile websites for social-media-first businesses.
COMMUNICATION IS ABOUT HITTING THE RIGHT NOTES Jonathan Diaz currently leads the company, a linguistics and marketing professional turned product designer. With over ten years of experience, Diaz has aided digital-first companies, freelancers, and agencies in communicating to young and social-native audiences.
INDUSTRY Marketing Tech. SAAS. Advertising.
SALES FUNNEL AFTER-SALES FUNNEL Through seven years in the marketing industry, Diaz has developed a network of agencies and media buyers that depend on his knowledge to build, test, and deploy sales funnels. The first customers are his former clients with access to early adopters and agencies. Currently, the beta version is co-designed based on their feedback. NOT ANOTHER WEBSITE BUILDER Most link-in-bio tools are just like other website builders. PUNY, tackles the need to establish instant and social-first websites with a built-in customer relations management platform in the back end. Catering to front-end marketers and sales teams, businesses and influencers that run their businesses through social media platforms can now engage, track, and close new prospects. RAISING A PRE-SEED OF $100K Positioned as a SAAS product, Jonathan believes that a content-driven marketing strategy will facilitate content creators, owners, startups, and other small businesses to understand how the PUNY tool can become their mobile-friendly sales funnels. The founder states that at a PRE-SEED of $100K, “the capital will be used to develop the platform and acquire new customers through content-heavy marketing strategies.”

Last but not least, the third brother, Juan, is a civil engineer with over 12 years of experience in construction and project management. SUPER TORTILLAS AND HEAVY-DUTY CHIPS Doña Lola’s first customers were restaurants and executive chefs at hotel chains. They quickly grasped the value of the freshness and versatility of the company’s product in their kitchen concoctions. A tortilla that does not break and a chip that will hold the toughest dip made a difference in their kitchens. Doña Lola also became a dependable supplier that delivered consistency in product and service across their six years of operations. SEEKING TO RAISE $1M The company seeks capital to expand to a larger manufacturing property and increase production capacity while increasing product margins. This experience led to the first indications that consumers were interested in tasting specialty coffee if it was conveniently available and easily accessible. Then, the team started visiting coffee growers and creating a website; the rest is history. THREE FRIENDS AND A SHARED PATH The team comprises three lifelong friends, Enio Suaznávar, Gustavo Fadhel, and Carlos Sánchez.
DESCRIPTION We connect specialty coffee growers to their customers.
INDUSTRY E-Commerce. Coffee. B2C. .
Enio studied Public Relations, Worked in DOT Communications as Account Executive, earned a Masters's Degree in Entrepreneurship & Innovation, and leads the company’s sales & marketing. Gustavo studied Accounting and served as a senior auditor for PwC for five years; he leads the company's finances and business strategies. Last, Carlos studied Agronomy, worked as a Business Developer and Project Manager at INprende, possesses a Masters's Degree in Entrepreneurship & Innovation, and leads the venture's day-to-day operations and logistics. LOYALTY BEGETS QUALITY. OVER 10,000 CUSTOMERS SERVED CUELA’s first B2C clients were friends, family, and the customers Enio used to deliver coffee to while working in the Museum of Coffee. Today, Cuela has, on average, 1350 monthly orders to various customers around Puerto Rico, the USA, and the world. A FOUNDATION BUILT ON TRUST CUELA’s value proposition comes from a robust & established coffee grower network. The team built unparallel trust with coffee growers across the mountainous regions of Puerto Rico and continues to focus on these relationships as the core engine of their business. Through time and patience, a moat is built, as these engagements are very complicated to recreate, especially when the company solves what coffee growers yearn for: visibility and access to new markets. SEEKING TO RAISE $800K TO ESTABLISH 3 SHOPS The company is on track to open its first coffee shop, a physical location that will function as a tangible experience for an online community to congregate. This expansion takes form after three years of listening to their customers asking for a place to experience CUELAS’s products in person. The team's ambitions share a goal to open three more locations in Puerto Rico to solidify Cuela as the premier specialty coffee company on the island. They believe claiming their stake in the local market will catalyze their aspirations to international expansion.

DRIVER TURNED FOUNDER
DESCRIPTION
Alexander Carrasquillo started PROMOV after being an Uber driver and identifying a common denominator in all rides: customers always asked drivers for recommendations. At this moment, he recognized an opportunity to centralize and present passengers with information about the nearest attractions, best venues, restaurants, bars, dispensaries, and many others. What started with printed flyers and traditional promotions grew to include digital screens across 100 vehicles.
Advertising and entertainment screens inside rideshare vehicles.
DEVELOPING A NEW ADVERTISING MEDIUM The team comprises Alexander Carrasquillo & Tamara Fred.
INDUSTRY Media. Advertising. Hardware.
Alexander holds a Bachelor of Business Administration in Digital Marketing, has former experience in measuring out-of-home advertising activity in Puerto Rico for Ometrika Research, and has more than five years of experience in sales and marketing. Tamara has experience in the advertising, design, and print industry for over five years holds a Bachelor's in Advertising, and leads all relationships with agencies and marketing professionals. THE CANNABIS INDUSTRY MEETS ACCESSIBLE ADVERTISING PROMOV’s first clients were growers, labs, and dispensaries from the cannabis industry. Due to the cumbersome regulation in digital and paid advertising for this industry, PROMOV positioned itself as one of the few outlets where restrictions and regulations are less strict. Due to the legal reciprocity Puerto Rico has with other states that share a legalized or decriminalized cannabis ruling, paired with the majority of passengers composed of tourists, the company is slowly dominating a niche market on the island. DATA DATA AND MORE DATA The platform behind PROMOV is what differentiates them from other billboards and comparable mediums. With visualized and compiled data, advertisers can gauge real-time information on passengers' moods, gender, age, and location. Additionally, advertisements can be presented when passing through a pre-selected location. SEEKING TO RAISE $100K IN PRE-SEED The company seeks to raise $100K to purchase and increase a greater number of screens and deliver higher distribution for current and future clients. The funding, stated Alexander, will be invested in purchasing more equipment, establishing a full sales team, and optimizing their website to generate sales and ad placement digitally.

BUILDING THE TOOLS FOR ENERGY INDEPENDENCE GENMOJI was conceived as a result of the impact of the Hurricanes that devastated Puerto Rico in 2017. The corporation aims to research, develop, and offer affordable products to propel the island nation toward complete energy independence. Francisco stated the origin of the name Genmoji is a play on words. It combines the words "generational" (addressing future generations) and "emoji" (as in our digital perceptions brought to life). It refers to the perception future generations will have of our current living one and the sustainable legacy - or lack thereof - we will all leave behind. AN INVENTOR MEETS AN INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY LAWYER The team comprises Francisco Laboy & Vanessa Carballido.
DESCRIPTION Genmoji manufactures and distributes renewable energy products with a focus on decentralization and affordability.
INDUSTRY Renewable Energy. Clean Tech. B2B.
Francisco led 14 years of sales and developed products in the telecommunications industry for Fortune 100 companies across Latin America. He has experience deploying infrastructure projects in Costa Rica, Chile, Peru, Pakistan, New Zealand, South Africa, Mexico, Brazil, and several other countries. He is currently the inventor and chief executive officer behind GENMOJI. Vanessa is a seasoned intellectual property lawyer who formerly served at McConnell Valdes and O’Neill & Borges. Together, they’ve led the research and development of new wind turbines and patented designs. A SATISFIED CLIENT IS ALL IT TAKES GENMOJI’s first client was the Bitcoin Association. Before this deployment, the company had gotten involved in potential blockchain energy development collaborations with crypto companies in Puerto Rico. Through a bidding process, GENMOJI was chosen by the Association to design and install an entirely off-grid renewable energy system at their facilities in the former Children's Museum of Old San Juan. The engagement and successful installation with this client led the enterprise to win multiple other deals and continue the ongoing investment in the R&D of its products.

STARTUP UP BEFORE THE STORM
Dame Un Bite officially launched in March 2017 with the help of an investor who provided Ortiz with an office and the necessary equipment to get started. Ortiz benefited from entrepreneurial programs and accelerators like I-Corps, EnterPRise, IDEA Seed Fund, Parallel18, and Guayacán. Within a year of its founding, company sales reached $100,000. Dame Un Bite snowballed; by 2019, revenue was up to $2 million after the company delivered more than 80,000 orders across 27 municipalities on the island.
