As per the Deeley Motorcycle Millionaire book Bob Kane, Glenn Turple and Ed & Norm Green were 3 of the first dealers that he mentioned as introducing the new Japanese product called Honda. Honda had arrived in Canada. Glenn and Rex saw the future and Turple Bros. took on the line. The first Honda’s arrived in Red Deer in August of that year with the C100 Cub 50s. These were followed by the Benly and Dream motorcycles. The product came to Canada prior to the United States. Honda Canada became the importer for the brand in 1967. CB450 to Key West, Florida, one of many cross-country trips over the years. Turple Bros. grew and began adding new product lines to serve Central Alberta. The 1966 Ski-Doo snowmobiles arrived in late 1965. We are one of BRP’s 10 oldest dealers in the world. “The Honda ATV’s came in around 1970,” says Glenn. “I was a little skeptical about these strange vehicles. They were just an oddity to us at the time.” In the 1970’s, Turple Bros. sold significant numbers of BMW & Moto Guzzi touring bikes, popular because of their shaft drive and comfortable ride. That changed in 1975 when Honda introduced the Goldwing. The full-line Suzuki dealership was taken on in 1988 and Sea-Doo personal watercraft arrived in 1993. The next big step came in 2000. The highway had long since moved west of Red Deer, so following the same philosophy as in 1956, Turple Bros. moved to a new, industry leading 46,000 square foot building. And what better place than Gasoline Alley! Despite some anxiety about this hefty investment, the decision was a good one as Glenn knew they could provide better accessibility and service to their customers. “We’ve had to work a lot harder since we came out here,” says Glenn “because we’ve had a lot more business.” Another milestone in 2000 was being named the “Red Deer Chamber of Commerce Business of the Year” in the large business category. In 2004 they decided to add a new line-up to the dealership. The KTM motocross bikes were a welcome addition to the sales floor. Glenn sums up sixty seven years in the business of selling motorcycles best in his own words. “Fairness and honesty have been important to the growth of Turple Bros., as they should be key ingredients for any business. It also helps to have a genuine interest in the products you sell. Some do reasonably well without it, but I guess I really enjoy using the products we sell. It definitely helps create enthusiasm.” “We also credit Central Alberta’s surging economy for the prosperity of this business over the years. It’s a great area to be in and the community has been very good to us. We are now dealing with the grandchildren of original customers.”

What’s New Since 2006? There have been lots of new things happen since our 50 year anniversary in 2006! In 2005 Bombardier Inc. sold off the motorsports division to BRP, a new company which took over all aspects of manufacturing. Since then, BRP has introduced the Spyder Roadster in 2008 and the Can-Am side-bysides in 2010. 2007 saw Turple Bros. become a sponsor of Noble Quest. Sean Noble and his 3 sons planned and participated in a fundraising ride that would have them ride 27,000 km from Ushuaia, Argentina to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska in 29 days. Check out their journey at www. noblequest.org. In 2012, Turple Bros. expanded the KTM line-up with their street motorcycles. A great achievement was made by Glenn in October of 2013. Glenn reached 1 million miles of motorcycling since 1946. It’s a feat that most riders will not reach. Come rain or shine or snow, you will typically catch Glenn out riding his Honda Goldwing that’s equipped with a Lehman Trike kit. There are very few days of the year Glenn won’t be on his bike. In September of 2014, Glenn and Rex Turple were inducted into the Canadian Motorcycle Hall of Fame due to their commitment to the industry and strength that helped create the grounds for all riders in the province of Alberta. The most recent addition to the sales floor has been the Yeti track kits, which are made in St. Albert. They convert a dirt bike into an all-season machine by removing the wheels and installing a front ski and a rear track and tunnel, making it similar to a snowmobile. The ownership of this business was originally Glenn and Rex with the support of Glenn’s wife Joyce (who was always a happy passenger and an organizer of their three kids who each worked at the shop for a while when they were old enough to be helpful). In the 1960’s, besides the assistance of all of the great staff over the years, there were two individuals that stood out. Ivan Walker would rather spend time looking at bikes instead of going to school and eventually got hired and then invited into the ownership structure. Terry Morris Sr. was passionate about the bikes from the time he was young and eventually got hired and he too was an integral part of this business for many years. In the early part of 1982 Gordon Turple left his banking career and joined the shareholders taking over the accessory side of the business. After the new building was put up in Gasoline Alley in 2000 there was some need for more management and Glenn’s daughter Brenda Neufeld joined in 2001 leaving her banking career behind as well. Gordon and Brenda grew up with motorbikes and have a passion for the history. Gordon was a motocross racer in his younger years. The latest addition to the ownership structure is Troy Dezall. He married into the family a few years ago but was also related

to the late Walt Healey who was also an icon in the industry having owned a dealership in Calgary for many years. Troy has been a salesman with us since 2004. From the owners and staff of Turple Bros. Ltd. we would like to thank the Central Alberta area for the continued support over the years. We continue to be a family owned business with 3 generations of the Turple family on staff. Brenda’s husband Darrell works in the parts department. Her son-inlaw Seamus Willox has worked in sales for

many years and her daughter Chelsea Willox will be returning from maternity leave in 2016 as well. Besides her work with the finance office Chelsea is a certified motorcycle instructor for Alberta Motorcycle Training in Springbrook. Red Deer is a great community to belong to and we are proud of our heritage and look forward to the future. Through the cycles of economy and life and many other dealerships coming and going from our area over the years we are continuing to be your “One Stop Shop for Non-Stop Fun”. q

Turple Bros. Ltd. Valued Previous Partners

Terry Morris Sr. Remembered

Ivan Walker

Terry grew up in Red Deer and as a kid used to come to the shop with one of his brothers as many others did just to sit on a bike and dream. Little did he know that his dream would become his passion and a long term commitment with the Turple family. In 1969 Terry began working for Glenn and Rex in the parts department. As he gained experience in the industry he then added the service department to his resume and began working with warranty claims for units. Due to his strong work ethics and commitment to the company Glenn and Rex invited him to become a junior partner in the business. Terry enjoyed riding a variety of street bikes over the years as well as snowmobiles (he even tested the waters by joining in on some snowmobile racing at one time). Terry was very involved in the decision making of the move in 2000 to the current location after the business had been in downtown Red Deer for 44 years and suggested the Gasoline Alley location to the partners. After the move Terry spent most of his time in the office upstairs working on the computer and overseeing many things. Unfortunately Terry had to leave our employment in January of 2015 when he was diagnosed with cancer and sadly lost that battle August 4, 2015. He will always be valued as an asset to our dealership for his many years of commitment to the business and customers. q

Ivan was another one of the young boys who loved to be around motorcycles. He would hang out at the shop and dream about what life could be if he didn’t have to go to school. In 1961 at the age of 14 Ivan got his first motorbike, a used 1960 Honda 50 Cub. Finally at the young age of 15 Glenn and Rex decided to give him a job while he was still going to school. At first he was uncrating and setting up new Honda 50’s and washing and cleaning the bikes. He had found his passion in working on motorcycles and worked his way into being a full-fledged motorcycle mechanic. In 1985 Alberta introduced licensing of motorcycle mechanics and the apprenticeship program. Experienced mechanics were grandfathered in as long as they could pass a written program to qualify and could only try twice without doing the full 4 year program. Even though Ivan was not a fan of the regular school system he passed it on his first try. Ivan was very enthusiastic about motorcycles and proved to be a very capable mechanic with the natural talent in his work. Due to his capabilities, commitment to the business and strong work ethics Ivan was invited to become a junior partner by Rex and Glenn. This partnership lasted for many years till Ivan chose to retire from the big shop in 2002. He then ran a small motorcycle mechanic business in Red Deer till retiring in 2012. He still rides and has a 1982 Honda Goldwing. He will always be valued as an asset to our dealership for his many years of commitment to the industry and all of the bikes he helped keep running on the road. q

Bob’s Story

50

years ago a determined, wiry, enthusiastic teen strode into the Turple Brothers small motor cycle shop on Gaetz Avenue in Red Deer. Proudly he plunked his hard earned savings on the counter — a down payment for his dream — a HONDA DREAM. A 1965 Honda C77E 300 Dream.

Bob knew what he wanted. A year of after school jobs and intense savings set him up for the down payment just the promise to buy. Too young to sign a contract, Bob Coffey had with him his father, Jim Coffey, to serve as the backer of his passion. It was Easter of 1965 when he took that first committed step. It was too wintery to drive the bike and with more money to earn before owning it the HONDA DREAM stayed with Turple in the shop. Bob was in grade 11. He worked after school and every week end throughout the long fall, winter and spring months to earn the money to pay off the bike. He earned 75 cents/Hr delivering fuel oil to mobile homes in Swan Hills. Finally, July 2nd 1965 he did it. It was Payoff date! Bob Coffey left his home in Huxley, Alberta and headed straight for his Honda Dream at Turple Brothers in Red Deer. He was filled with excitement and a bit of apprehension. His dollars were placed on the counter. Papers were signed. Bob solemnly shook hands with Glenn Turple. The deal was sealed. The $745 bike was his. Now with just enough money to fill the gas tank he straddled the leather maroon seat, griped the throttle and rode off on his shiny black dream. The purchase of the bike left Coffey penniless. He landed a job on a local farming operation. His bike was always cared for with the utmost attention. The new Dream with its new bike aroma was sheltered from the western storms in the bunkhouse beside Bob. “Gee it smelled good”.

Fast Forward 50 years… Bob loves to take care of his bike as much as he does to ride it. This is evidenced by the many accolades and awards he continues to receive for his pristine Dream. He was featured in “Thru the Windshield- the Magazine for Classic and Custom Rides”. In three separate years his Honda Dream captured the “Rider’s Choice” award at the Handhills Rally. The Canadian Vintage Motorcycle Group awarded him first prize in the Honda Preservation category. The recognition validates Coffey’s pride in his lifelong passion. July 2nd 2015 a proud wiry man rides his shiny black vintage 1965 HONDA DREAM to Turple’s new motor cycle shop on Leva Avenue in Red Deer. Grinning he plunks, not money but a large cake decorated with a replica of the infamous bike and its details on Glenn’s desk. Turple and Coffey share a moment of fond memory when the contract was signed 50 years ago. Glenn continues to work selling motor bikes and forever changing the lives of first time motorcycle owners. Both Glenn and Bob are members of the Central Alberta Vintage Motorcycle Group and life members of Goldwing Road Riders Association. The same smiles, the same store owner, the same proud bike owner and the same bike come together to celebrate exactly 50 years to the day the purchase of this vintage 1965 Honda Dream. Bob’s parting words as he rides off on his bike were “the easiest way to preserve your bike is to not mess it up in the first place.” q
