KITCHENS Not just for cooking
Inside: Designing OPEN PLANS holistically
Take a look at VINTAGE-INSPIRED kitchens
The art of everyday living.
OPEN LIVING Designing areas holistically Words by Interior Designer David Caruana Getting a new kitchen is likely to be the biggest investment in the whole house, and the most complicated room to plan. So this calls for dedicated time for planning this room and maximizing use of the space. CHECKLIST Space assessment and personal needs will determine the kitchen layout before one starts looking at aesthetics. The checklist below will help you think about where you should start: • Is the kitchen part of an open-plan area or is it a separate room? • Is the open-plan area big enough for its purpose? This is where you might call for the assistance of an architect or interior designer to restructure the area as needed. • Whether the open-plan area is large enough to accommodate other furniture apart from the kitchen, such as a dining table and a living area with adequate seating and TV. • Is there a possibility to combine a small box room or pantry to the kitchen? • How many people are likely to use the kitchen; single, couple, family? • Will the kitchen be used for other activities other than cooking; eating, working, entertaining?
PLANNING The space planning exercise starts by making a precise scale drawing of the whole room and including all the furniture that needs to be present, such as dining table and settee, not just the kitchen. This space should be thought of as one large space, not separate rooms. Consider the following when planning: • Availability of natural light • Circulation space • Appliances required • Services, such as extraction ventilation, plumbing, drains • Possibility of a small pantry Once the space has been distributed, comes the time to identify a preference for the layout of the kitchen and exploring the different options for the space available. Everybody loves an island kitchen but is there enough space or will it encroach onto the living or dining space? KITCHEN STYLE Once the perfect layout plan has been established, we move on to the style of kitchen, thinking of this holistically together with the dining, living and the rest of the house. Go beyond the kitchen parameters - think about the flooring, wall treatments, soft furnishing, light fixtures, which all add to the experience of the room. If bound by existing materials already present in the room or other loose furniture which is already in hand, we can work around these to include them in the style of the space. The key is to try keeping it simple and functional: go for the most hard-wearing materials you can afford and get professional help if in doubt - remember that a small mistake can cost you a lifetime of inconvenience. David Caruana is an interior designer who has been working with Joinwell for years, bringing clients for a product that reflects both design and quality, and seeing projects to completion. His experience goes back 17 years with a portfolio that spans from residential to commercial designs. www.davidcaruana.com

New Inspirations REGINA The ingredients put into the design of the Regina kitchen make the model incredibly versatile, yet particular. This model is special thanks to a fusion of styles - the wood finished framed doors which give the kitchen a contemporary feel, while the presence of matt grey colours together with strong accents in glass or metal are features of industrial design.

Your Guide to choosing the best material for your kitchen SOLID WOOD OR NOT? THAT IS THE QUESTION. Understanding the different door types and materials will help you make the right choices when shopping for a new kitchen. Many tend to think that solid wood is the best material for hardwearing kitchens as the material is pretty indestructible and will last forever. This idea may stem from the beginning of the twentieth century, when most of the furniture was produced in solid wood. While still being able to manufacture solid framed-doors, today we have the luxury of being able to choose from a range of alternative materials, which are readily available and which may be more suitable to our lifestyle, whilst providing opportunities for design and style.
Disadvantages: • With the material being so unique, this may also mean that different grains and shades could come together in one door. • Real wood also tends to warp and split when exposed to severe changes in temperature and most importantly, humidity – a case which is very true in Malta, the island of very hot summers and cold and damp winters. • Solid wood may also change colour with time – even when stained or sprayed - and ideally should not placed in direct sunlight which will accelerate the process. • It can be attacked by wood-destroying insects.
Here’s a quick guide of the materials available for your kitchen, with pros and cons for each. 1. SOLID TIMBER This is real solid wood. It is artificially dried in a kiln - a specialized oven - and being a natural material, after the drying process is complete it would still contain a certain level of humidity. Advantages: • It is a natural material, and since no tree is precisely like another, this means that the finish will be unique in its shape and hues of colour. Real wood can also be stained to different levels to achieve specific colours.

2. COMPOSITE This is a material consisting of particles of wood and resin, which are bonded under extreme pressure. These can then be covered on both sides with laminate or veneered sheets – laminates can be in different colours and textures and also made to feel and look like real wood. Laminate is hard wearing, doesn’t discolour with time. Advantages: • The main advantage is that, composite boards are much more stable, hard-wearing and can to a point, withstand most environmental conditions. Some boards are even specially manufactured to be water and fire resistant. • There is minimal risk of warping and no risk of splitting. Disadvantages: • The finish is limited to the different textures available. 3. LACQUERED FINISH Lacquer can either be pigmented (paint) or clear varnish. In both cases, the final result can either be matt, semi-matt or gloss and it is applied in several coats. Lacquers can be used in specialized environments, such as marine and hospitality/public areas (fire resistant). Advantages: • Dream of a colour and it can happen. • Same colour code can be applied to wall paint and other pieces of furniture as it’s a universal colour (RAL or NCS). Disadvantages: • There is one main disadvantage which is that the spray is more prone to scratches if not well cared for. 4. VENEER Veneer is a thin slice of real wood which can then be pressed on to a substrate such as chipboard, MDF even solid timber or even onto shaped pieces.
7
Advantages: • This has the same look and feel of real wood because it is in fact real timber • When pressed onto composites, it is less sensitive to warping and heat since the core is synthetic. Disadvantages: • When scratched deep enough, the underlying board can become visible, unlike in the case of something completely solid, which will retain all its qualities even when damaged. • Veneer is still prone to changing colour over time. The demand for shabby-chic kitchens, or what is locally referred to as ‘country’ has seen a sudden rise in the local market. This style has seemed to bridge the gap felt by those who are seeking a timeless design, yet not in a classic finish.

• a framed door • chunky solid wooden counter tops • décor inserts such as top cornice, grooved wall cladding, glass panes and decorative shelving • a clever mix of textures in metal, wood and sometimes tiles. Vintage-inspired designs are also often characterized by split layouts including an island with open shelving or drawers. However, a look is not solely achieved by the style of the kitchen but also by the accessories chosen, such as pendant lighting, bar stools, appliances as well as by the choice of sink and mixer.
