A little goes a long way Big or small, I believe in making impactful difference. Architecture should not just be a building but also a solution. It was my father who is an architect, first influenced me to take this path but as I grew older, I knew that I had great desire to pursue in architecture.

MY

STORY

After my internship in 2016, I realised how much architects over look users’ comfort for aesthetics and it made me question the value of the space. One of the architects I look up to, Kevin Mark Low, once told me, “design the toilets as if your mother were to clean it”. What he said to me was so strong and powerful and it stuck with me until today. Having said that, beautiful architecture is not opposed. I believe that the comfort of users should not be compromised while the aesthetics of the architecture should not be ignored. Shigeru Ban said “earthquakes don’t kill people, architecture kills people”, where he explained that the buildings we built are the ones that crumbles during the earthquake and kills people. He came up with a solution to use paper tubes to build homes instead that was sustainable and safe. Shigeru Ban has inspired me to think deeper and be sensitive towards every little detail. He made me realise how paying attention to solve an issue that matters through architecture is more meaningful. I like thinking out of the box and thinking about new possible solutions. I like going against the wind to prove that we do not have to conform to the norm all the time. There are different possibilities and finding the best one is a process of exploration. I want to make a difference. Hopefully, as I walk my journey as a growing architect, my small footprints will leave an impact and make a difference- even if it’s just a slight difference, as long as it will change or help someone for the better. A little goes a long way

UNPRIVATE MANSION: THE HUMAN ZOO

Our society is heavily influenced by aspirational lifestyles portrayed through various forms of media. This project began with an examination of architectures created for reality television. Big brother alone ran for 20 years and in over 40 countries. This led to a test installation to explore my ideas and in parallel my thesis focussed on domesticity and privacy. The final project revolves around how we give up our privacy and allow others to watch us. The Un-Private Mansion is a Human Zoo where people (social media celebrities) wait in line to reside in for fame and luxury in exchange of their privacy. The mansion is equipped with cameras which broadcast their private lives to the public. Visitors can roam around the mansion where they are able to watch into the resident’s daily lives – like the social media. The project culminates in a film which extrapolates observable behaviours in our current society, portraying a unique and potentially disturbing building in a near future Camden. The project is a statement to what society is sleepwalking into.

BRIEF

Love Island

Camera mapping of the Love Island villa drafted based on scene shots.

Love Island is one of British popular reality tv show during summer where the contestants are placed in an isolated villa to find a partner. I was very intrigued on the concept of allowing people to watch you for the entire 8 weeks in the villa. While the show is about romantic relationships growth - something private it is put out there for everyone to watch. It got me thinking about how society is now - where one one hand they feel the need to post things online or share what there are doing, weather it is for fame , attention or even validation- at the same time giving up their privacy. On the other hand enjoy knowing what other people are up to .

RESEARCH

BBC Experiment

Standford Experiment

The first part of the year, I explored the the relation of being in power when one is able to watch someone. The relationship between the producer, the audience and the islanders is studied and compared to various experiments such as the Standford experiment - a role play of a jail set in the basement of Standford University. The students playing the role of the guards were too imersed in their role and lost themselves. But when there was another experiment similar to it carried out by BBC with one different rule : to control the harmony in the jail, the results were different and the prisinors overthrew the jail scene. The conclusion derived from this study was that we act how we perceive we should act especially when being watched

FURNITURE

MUGGY MIRROR

The furniture is designed to temporarily remove the user from their surrounding and context to be able to have self reflect to ensure that the islander does not lose him/herselves while being manipulated by both the producers and the perceptions of the audience. The islander will feel discomfort in this piece yet find some form of solitude - while intereacting with the piece. His voice and actions will be recorded and played back for him to reflect and realise how he sounds and looks on screen.

The project is set in Camden, London.

London is the most spied-on city in the world. Numerous CCTV cameras have been placed across the city to help reduce the crime rates in the city. Since Camden Town is one of the most visited places in world and a place that stands out for its individuality, home to the misfits, artists, musicians, tattoo artists and burlesque dancers, it seemed right for the project to be situated here. In fact, Camden is home to anyone who wants to call it so.

DESIGN

Gym Junkie’s Room The room has pushes and enables gym enthusiast to not only continue their routine spending longs hours working out but is crafted and designed to frame views that will allow the occupant to show off their body and results of their workout. Since gym ethusiast are never shy with their body, the room has almost no privacy.

Fashion & Beauty Room The room allows fashion and beauty enthusiast to be able to create alot of content and easily displat their day to day routine on dressing up and getting ready. On top of that, the rooms displays all their items as visitors are alwas interested knowing the different products and brands used by fashionistas.

VENICE ART CIRCUS

Venice Beach is well known for its vibrance and art culture. Back in the early days, it was a place where the the unsual was possible. It was a place where creativity was across the air. The vibrance of Venice Beach remains until today. Unfortunately, althought the place is still very much alive, there are only a handful of effort taken to make the enrich the site. The promenade along Venice Beach is filled with street performancers , street market and street art. These are the key elements that brings live to Venice Beach. However, when sun sets, the site transforms into a dead town where homeless wonders the streets. This reflects that without the art on the street, Venice Beach is merely just a beach. The project proposes an art centre where the essence of Venice Beach will be surely mantained. It is a place where the art vendors on Venice Beach will be able to not only showcase their art but also share and teach other. The project is an effort to mantain as well as enrich the art culture on Venice Beach. The building also hybrids into a performance space where performing art based on Venice Beach can also be showcased.

SITE STUDY

Venice Beach is well known for the art culture on the beach that gives the place its character. It is a place outside the norm where everybody is prone to his or her creativity which sometimes gives amazing as well as bizarre pieces of art. Along the promenade, these different form of art can be seen. The aim of the project is to mantain as well as enrich the art culture of street art and performance in Venice Beach.

There are a few issues that needs attention on site which includes: 1. No proper facicilites for artist. 2. No platform for Artist to grow. 3. Identity of Venice dissolving due to new organisations moving into site.

PLANNING

The Art Circus proposed is a hybrid of an Art Market and a Performance Space. The funciton of the main hall in the space is manipulated by the arrangements of the booths. Booths function as a stall when the hall is being used as a market and as a sitting booth when it is a performance space.

DESIGN

Booths that opens into a small studio space, a market booth or even a little gallery which can be collapsed into a seating pod when the building is used as a performance space.

STRUCTURAL STRATEGY

Steel frame structure is chosen to be the skeleton of the building. As there is heavy pedestrian circulation on site, construction time is essential for this project to be constructed as quickly as possible to reduce the construction and obstruction on site. The building envelope should be easy to install and mantain therefore, corrugated metal sheet was chosen as the extrior cladding of the building. The 2mx2mx2m modular booths which are made of timber are used to create and manipulate the space interiorly

STRUCTURAL STRATEGY

The technical aspect of the project was also carefully considered and designed. With large cantilevers, a system that supports it in tension it attached to the space roof is used to reduce large obstructions in the space. A sky roof that can be mechanically raised for natural lighting is attached to the space frame.

DEVISION : WOMEN WELLNESS CENTRE

The Division was the final project of my course. I wanted to do something that would reflect myself at this stage as an architect in the making. My intention was to have a relatable purpose to design at the same time follow through my own design principles as a growing architect since we were free to propose anything on the given site. The site that was given was Putrajaya which is the administrative capital of Malaysia. Majority of the locals at Putrajaya are Muslims. There is a conservative code of ethics for Muslim men and women where Muslim women have many restrictions. I wanted to provide a space where these women can have a comfortable environment to learn, share experiences, relax and build selfconfidence without being worried about breaching any codes of ethics and also being judged. The design concept of the project is to have various layers that would create different levels of privacy ranging from private to public in the wellness centre. Different methods are used to create different forms of privacy to control the circulation of people in the building as well as the visual link in the building. This is to ensure the users in the building would be able to embrace their personal comfort according to their own perception of privacy.

DESIGN CONCEPT

LAYERS PUBLIC ZONE

SEMI-PRIVATE ZONE

BREAKING DOWN ;

3 different layers are formed. PUBLIC, SEMI-PRIVATE, PRIVATE. Between each zones there are transitional spaces.

SHIFTING ;

The public zone is to be opened and therefore its components are shifted apart drastically. In the private zone, the components does not shift alot. There are interlinks, creating a closed and intimate environment. ACCESS POINT ; The public zone has many access points where anyone is able to come in and out of the zone freely in contrary to the other two zones where the circulation is more controlled. LINKAGE; Vertically, the components at the private zone are more compact. The programs and circluations are more controlled. The spaces are all internally linked. In the contrary, the program and the circluation at the public zone is more scattered. LAYERS; Layers such as different texture and materials are added. Exampls are vegetation and water to act as buffers and barriers.

Water Feature

Building spaced out providing more circulation and access points.

Screenings

PRIVATE ZONE

Each space placed closer to restrict circlations and movements

Screenings

Solid Walls

There are no access points between the each space to control and restrict circulations of users.

Landscapes

I want to design a building with many layers to create different level of privacy to provide a comfortable environment for women. The public area is intended for all types of users where the private area is strictly for womens’ access only. Each layer is thought through before it is placed to either restrict or allow human circulation. The layers are placed in relation of one another are lines thrown in to align them. This forms some sort of order which also reflects the site as an administrative centre.

AALINGATI : VISITOR INTERPRETIVE CENTRE

aaliNgati ; embrace in sanskrit language. This project which was a Visitor Interpretive Centre is set on a site called Lembah Bujang. Lembah Bujang is a site full with historical value. It is one of the first few areas to have civilization in Malaya. As its location was very strategic, it grew to be an entrepot and there were many traders from different places. Hinddu Buddism was introduced by these traders to Lembah Bujang and has left a great impact on Lembah Bujang. However, in the present, this historical site is being forgotten as it is slowly being replaced by new developments. The concept of the new Visitor Interpretive Centre is embracing the past. To embrace is to hold something closely by accepting and appreciating. What is in the past should not be left behind, instead be embraced while looking into the future. The aim is to make visitor not just learn about the historical stories of Lembah Bujang but also to make them understand and appreciate the importance and the essence of what is left behind by the past civilization through the journey of the VIC. The VIC is designed to recreate the liveliness and sacredness of Lembah Bujang.

DESIGN STRATEGY CANDI ; Ancient stone building used for worship, or for storing the ashes of cremated Hindu or Buddhist kings and priests

CANDI ; The similarity of the roof peaks.

OCTOGONS ; Octogo layout was took after th on site which previousl a candi.

STEPPING STRUCTURE ; The structure of the building was inspired by the candi.

GEOMETRY ; The play of different geometries.

ROOF PEAK ; The roo peak that resembles H monuments that either punnacle.

SPINE; A spine as a backbone and a pathway to link each of the structure.

LEVELS - OBSTRUCTION; Different layers of levels as obstructed to reflect the that were faced to build Lebah Bujang Empire.

CIRCULATION; Visitors zag manner through the derstand the journey of t civilisation better.

ctogonal plan ter the existing building iously took the plan of

EXTRUSION ;The plan is extruded.

REPEATING STRUCTURE ; The repeating modular structure that acs as one building is copied to resemble to old historical site.

AXIS; The entrance is facing east , contrary to Hinddu-Buddism architecture that all entrances are to face the east.

DIVISION ; The upper part of the structure is divided.

VARYING VOLUMES; To make the structure more intersting, the volumes of each module differs.

ZONING; The are two main zones. The private zone is located away from the public zone to reduce circulation around the office and ensure privacy.

PLAN

From the entrance, the visitors will be able to imagine visually the old candi site. Each space in the VIC tells a different story, from the rise to the fall of Lembah Bujang which will ignite different feeling of the visitor. The spaces are connected by a main spine with a strong visual axis leading to the pathway up where the candi are. At the end of the journey, visitors will feel more connected with the past and will learn to embrace it.

Year 3 . Semester 5. Taylors University.

X SPACE : COMMUNITY LIBRARY & MUSIC CENTRE The brief of this project was to design a community library for the local people of a place called Sentul. However, Sentul is facing a problem where there is a big question which community should the project be cattered for. Is it the community who have been living in Sentul since it was established or the group of people who are slowly moving in who will be the future community of Sentul? The main idea of the community library aims to provide a space to act as a bride to the two communities with music as a hybrid program since music is a common language between the two communities.

SITE STUDY

The darken areas marked shows the area that has been bought over by a big developer with the intention of building new high rise buildings. The site, Sentul, is surrounded with new development. Gentrification is happening where the area has been improved for new residence with higher income, neglecting those who have been residing there for a long time with a lower income and no longer can afford having a house at the area. This causes a division between the two communities. Who should the community library be cattered for? The exisitng community who have called this place home for a long time or the future residence? Through the site analysis, both communities should be taken into consideration as it is now home to both communities.

ISSUES

Backlane turned into a dumpster.

New development causing old residence to feel uncomfortable.

The edge and contrast between the two types of development in the area creating two different communites in Sentul.

Haji Salleh Street, where the site is located used to be a vibrant street with many people since it was the main road before the big developers bought over the place constructing new and bigger roads, leaving this street dormant.

The shades represents the type of users according to age at their designated place during the day. One of the issue is that the community do not have a place where people of different age can get together.

Congestion on the outside road, causing people to avoid the area and coming to Haji Salleh Street.

What once used to be a vibrant street is not empty and quiet.

DESIGN STRATEGY COMMUNITY The existance of 2 types of community in the area - the rich and the poor.

GENTRIFICATION Developers creating a bigger gap between the two communities.

INTENTION The idea of the library is to create a common space for the two communities.

COMMON LANGUAGE Music has no boundaries and class. It is a common language and interest that both community can share.

URBAN INFILL The site sits between two old shop lots.

CHANGE Slits to break away from the industrial block design reflecting something new yet respecting the site.

MORPH Structure of the building acts as a bridge between the existing buildings with different heights.

CONTINUITY From the narrow view afar, the library would look just like a block similar to the other buildings on site maintaining the continuity of the street.

FACADE As people appraches the building, the facade changes and opens up showing the possibilities

FACADE The building facade has vertical fins that follows the rhythem of the exisitng buildings on site.

LIFTED The ground floor is left as an open plan to allow people to access the back lane of the street.

PODS Pods in the building that allows visual connectivity throughout the building.

FRONT ELEVATION

The facade reflect the building as a commmunity library // music centre where not only the structure has a rhythm but the facade also moves and changes as one approaches the library. The entrance is a big opening welcoming users into the plaza of the building. Wooden louvres are used as the facade to allow natural ventilation.

MOONTOPIA: EXTERNAL LIVING SPACE

This project was a competition entry done in collaboration with my final semester design studio. The brief was to create a sustainable living and working space on the moon for the future. After doing some research, my team and I came up with a proposal to use the moon as an eternal resting place. In the future, with the advancement of technology, perhaps travelling to the moon would be as easy as flying from London to Paris. Saying goodbye to love ones is never easy. What if we did not have to say goodbye? Since there isn’t any oxygen on the moon, perhaps bodies would not decay and we could keep our love ones there after life. We designed an eternal living space to keep the ones who no longer have a place on earth. We crafted the project into a story about the journey of a girl name Sarah who sent her mother off to the moont.

27th JAN 2101 Dear Mama, I wonder if you can hear me if I stare long enough into the black sky. I miss you, and it feels like my world is slowly being engulfed by the dark. How I wish I’d hold you longer close to me. It hadn’t been a day since you left but I felt so empty already. The virus is spreading so quickly around the globe. Having you near us would be dangerous. I know you had to leave us to keep us all safe. You were always so selfless mama. Being the superwoman you are, I am sure that you would be able to help them find the antidote for this. I know I’ll have to face it and let go, but not today. Give me some time to grieve. I hope one day I would be able to hug you again. Until then don’t worry mama, you are kept safe. Safe at the moon.

It was nerve wrecking as I took a step into the climber and it began to move. With the loud whirring and clanking machinery sound at the background, and within seconds, I couldn’t feel my legs anymore. We were out of what they called the geostationary orbit. Without the gravity pull, the view lay around us was even more surreal and hypnagogic – an immense field of mysterious darkness as if we just entered another dimension. A dimension where moon was the destination, mama. The captain turned on the artificial gravity in the climber as it ascending slowly towards the moon following a long and sturdy cable. My fingers wrapped around your cold hands and I were no longer afraid but feeling calm. Perhaps this inner peace came from the silence of the vacuum-stated cosmos or perhaps it just came from the fact that I knew you will be resting peacefully and eternally on moon.

PORTAL: ART INSTALLATION MALAYSIA’S 29TH ARCHITECTURAL WORKSHOP COMPETITION Numerous places across the world have baffled the scientific community and historians alike. These places possess traits that have yet to be explained scientifically. Ever since millenniums ago, ancient tribesmen had witnessed weather abnormalities and bizarre occurrences. Human curiosity led to the discovery of vortexes of energy. Fabrics of space-time overlap one another in these locations, gathering energy from multiple universes. The portal is an art installation with an opaque cloud of impenetrable particles that once divided dimensions dissipates into clouds of mesh, twirling and twisting around the heart of the mechanism. The sight of its manifestation is a neither fantasy nor reality as the lines between dimensions begin to blur, teleporting the mind visually. It is surreal, mystic, a play of light and form orchestrated by the overwhelming powers of the cosmos. Lightning, fire, smoke.

PROJECT

I worked on the detail drawings that were produced for construction as well as producing some visuals for the client.

For this project, I worked on producing facade design options and visualisations. The client wanted a feature wall on the facade that sat elegantly in this tropical sanctuary. Plans

KINDERGARTEN, Cheras, Malaysia KSKA Architects The site was part a phase 2 plan for the clients development project. However, as it was going to be 10 years before phase 2 happens, the client wanted to build a temporary kindergarden for the community. I was responsible in producing design options for the client. The client wanted there to be ample of natural lighting into the space. They also wanted the boundaries between interior and exterior are blurred at the same time considering the amount of heat emitted into the building creating a fun environment for the children to be in.

Professional Work.

MELAWATI BUNGALOW, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia KSKA Architects The project was a bungalow for the client’s private home. The client wanted a tropical retreat santuary within the city. The interplay of generic and recycled manterial coupled with simple yet practical detail enchanced the design. I was involved in pre-planning and construction phase where I did some shematic design during my internship with the firm, then when I join the project team again during as a Part 1 Architectural Assistant I often went on site for meetings and also to help resolve design problems that arise.

Mariam House Involved in the design stage on a project of a house for a disabled lady, Mariam. Mariam was a disabled lady and had to move around in her special wheelchair that had larger dimensions than usual. Many considerations needed to be taken for her to be able to move about as well as enjoy views from the spaces in her home without having to move about too much. I was repnsible for producing design and visual options for her. I also produce many visuals for design options for other projects.
