05/ Living @ Manifesta 9 Grondplan, inplantingsplan

Living at Manifesta When the Art exposition of Manifesta was held in Genk, we were asked to create a temporary house with an atelier. The site where we needed to design it was at Winterslag in front of an old mine building. There were also three ponds on the site, very close to each other.

XS In my second year at school in Hasselt, we worked on different site’s in Liége on different scales. Here we are at the edge of the city center and we were asked to renovate an old building so it could become a home for an etalagist, his family. There also needed to be an apartment for guests who stayed over.

Since the location was at the edge of the dense city center, and had a big open square next to it, I worked with an “Open/Closed” Concept. The building would stay the same from the outside, but the new extension would be an all glazed structure.

In between the Impasses At the end of the Impasse Hubart and Impasse de la Vignette in LiĂŠge, there is a lot that connects these two typical streets of LiĂŠge. There was an height differences with the plot to the north,, which are private gardens, but we could use that plot too to fit the program, one workshop room for cooking with additional restaurant and 3 housing programs, on the site.

8

I stated from early on in the process that I didn’t want to use the part with the private garden, because living in a city with that size of a garden is a privilege. Instead I worked with split levels between the two parts of the building, and on the main street side, I connected the existing building heights.

Venice is a city of narrow streets and little public spaces in my opinion. The little open spaces come as suprises on your walk, but also feel crowded soon. That’s why I wanted to give the city a new green open space. To do so, I emptied the site and lifted the new volume of the ground. Now the beautiful garden becomes public and open. The museum gets restorated into Peggy’s home again, and in the suspended volume above, visitors can stay a few nights in a modern version of Peggy’s lifestyle. This they do with a gorgeous view on the city and the garden.

The mangroves of Kigamboni’s Eco-park wetlands, form a beautiful backdrop for the new Bwawa Hai resort hotel in Africa. Its name refers to the natural setting: Bwawa is the Swahili word for ‘swamp’ and relates to the wetland, Hai means ‘alive’ and relates to the live in between the mangroves. With 200, mainly family orientated, guest rooms and an open composition of lobby, breakfast area,

dining room, bar and terraces, this hotel makes the environmental and sustainable ambitions spatial. The wooden structure and shutters, the galleries and bridges, viewpoints and hammock areas create a unique atmosphere and homey comfort. Amidst the colorful birds and other wildlife, overviewing the flowers and in the shadow of the trees, the hotel guests experience the ever changing wonders of

a respectful relationship between man and nature. Unlike any other resort hotel, the Bwawa Hai, visually integrates the daily management/life of the hotel: laundry rooms, the kitchen area, spaces for the cleaning crew and hotel staff offices, are part of the hotel experience: this is a living organism that looks for a social and ecological balance, with respect for life.

Internship Spheron Architects Urban Hermitage aims to recreate the tranquil and melancholic beauty of a remote monastry in Belgium in a domestic studio flat in London. The client - a London based artist - wanted to find a way to transport the feeling of remoteness to the urban setting, exploring the concept of solitary and monastic seclusion amidst the bustle of London.

“The monastry sits in a valley hermetically cut off from the intrusions of the outside world... Back in London, outside the window of my room is a world full of business and noise. I am wondering, if it is possible to recreate that monastic ambiance that I experienced, to live a life of bucolic solitude, within my tiny room?”
