project Book Redesign
title Folded Handmade Book
01
intro
We picked an existing book to redesign the
layout for a different target audience. We could
use the existing content and images to work
on the layout and format. approach
I chose Alisa Golden’s Making Handmade Books.
I set my new target audience as college
students who are interested in making books
for themselves. Therefore, I came up with
the idea to make a connection between the
content (folded books) and the experience
of the book (a book that folds in many different
configurations). The book also works unfolded
so that it can be opened up to read as a spread.
The reader can not only learn how to create
a handmade book, but also experience the
actual folded book. There are eleven chapters
that teach people how to make a handmade
book. I designed the pagination in the middle,
6
which was a way to guide readers to open up
the page to reveal more content.

project Redesign Spectrum Pencils
title 36 Piece Color Set
02
intro
We needed to redesign a package of 36
colored pencils for the specific target audience
we chose. The challenge of the project was
to make a realistic and high quality package for
Spectrum brand. approach
I targeted tourists and outdoor painters, so I
came up with an idea to design a portable case
organized for three sets of colored pencils.
The three sets of pencils were based on three
different categories: Colored Pencils, Graphic
and Woodless Pencils, and Watercolor Pencils.
The goal was to create an easy way to carry
and arrange colored pencils. For the logo,
I used a circle, triangle and square to express
the idea behind the three specific function
pencils. Each pattern represents one category,
20
therefore I overlaid the three patterns to form
a symbol for my Spectrum logo.

project Rebranding a Brand
title Room to Read
03
intro We created a campaign for a non-profit company, with an event included. In general, the company we chose should represent an issue that we feel strongly about. Overall, the project had to be typography based, such as the logo, app, website, book and signage.
40
approach I rebranded the non-profit organization Room to Read. Their goal is to make it possible for all children to pursue a quality education, reach their full potential, and contribute to their community and the world. My redesign objective was to encourage students to support the charity and help developing countries. Generally, I used the color orange to manifest the whole project because I wanted to attract more people’s attention to the issue of supporting education. Orange can also represent a positive and powerful feeling. For the logo, I created a book feeling by using three letters. For the book, I designed a gazette with an envelope packaging. For the website, I applied the same elements of columns and lines in order to be consistent with my gazette design. For the app, I came up with the idea of shopping for a donation, which meant people could decide where their money would go in order to support the organization. For the signage, I chose a stadium because my event for the project was a concert. For the ticket, I made a vertical folded ticket with a small window to reveal the date of the event.

intro
We chose a subject of interest and expressed
it using typography, creating a unique
alphabet that would represent the subject
area. The subject could range from expressing
the emotive qualities of music to making
a social statement. approach
I started experimenting with typography
by cutting each letter out and used a burning
pen to burn the letter’s edges in order to
create the feeling of imperfection. I then tried
another approach by using a lighter to really
burn each letter from A to Z. I took pictures
of the letters during the burning to capture
the brief moment. The concept was to show
the process of ‘Survival’. Meanwhile, it also
72
conveys what these letters were saying.

intro
We created a campaign for a brand based
on our interest. The design should be
related to in-store packaging. The purpose
was to get more customers by designing
an appealing packaging. approach
I chose United Colors of Benetton and reduced
the name to Benetton. After researching
their in-store packaging, I wanted to redesign
the shopping bag and shoe case. I adapted
their colorful visual elements into my design.
I used solid colors on each shopping bag
and shoe case. The idea was to create a joyful
and powerful visual in order to get more
customer attention and meanwhile it could

intro
We chose one director’s films and developed
a visual language to express the theme of
the films. The big challenge was to make a
complex set of film festival materials function
together and expand our design solutions to
encompass a wide range of formats. approach
I chose five films from Gus Van Sant and came
up with a thread running through the films: “The
struggle of American teenagers to overcome
conformity, loneliness and despair often
can be overwhelming and end in death.” My
festival title was Torn Apart, which could be
understood easily through my subtitle, Growing
Up Alone & Desperate in Gus Van Sant’s
America. I began by designing a logo that could
convey a feeling of ‘imperfection’, and then
I applied shades of purple throughout the whole
project. Additionally, I wanted to create a
lonely feeling, so my photo imagery focused
102
on a lonely figure in black and white.

intro
We chose one brand that was dead, dying
or defunct and explored various methods of
research to discover the audience, and ‘brand
soul’ and then bring the brand to life through
the creation of a collection of integrated
collateral. By understanding the core of the
brand, we redesigned/repackaged the brand
in order to create another opportunity in a
different marketplace. approach
I brought Benetton from the global to the
multicultural. Their previous brand offered
apparel for men, women and children. Now,
I wanted to expand to let people see into
cultures, feel the experience, listen to the
world, taste and smell the authenticity around
the world. By experiencing different cultures,
people develop a greater understanding of
each other and know how to respect each
other more. Thus, their interaction, as well as
146
respect and equality, will increase.

intro
The project was to leverage experimental
typography to recreate an issue of a design
magazine of our choice. It allowed us
to emphasize creativity and freedom in
manipulating type as a means of expression. approach
The concept for designing the magazine
was “to go”. I organized different subjects and
designed each subject on a big folded sheet
of paper. Readers could decide which subject
they wanted to read about each day without
carrying the whole magazine with them.
It would be convenient and also allow readers
to choose their material based on their daily
mood. For example, Monday for economic
topics, Tuesday for architectural subjects,
Wednesday for poetry, etc. I tried to create a
170
handy and convenient way of reading a magazine.

intro
We selected an event that could otherwise be
described in typical time-based measurements
(hours, minutes, seconds). It needed to have
a beginning and an end in order to create
an infography that shows the reinvention of
time design. approach
I made the first day of traveling around San
Francisco into infography. My visual inspiration
came from the Caltrain timeline. My roommate
and I discovered Bay Area attractions by
walking and taking public transportation.
During the one-day trip, we swiped our Clipper
Card to pay for transportation, took pictures
as mementos, and walked the streets one
by one. Therefore, I came up with the idea of
making each street into a line, and the things
we did into check points. Finally, I designed
a kit that includes a folded map and a guide
book for tourists. For the folded map, there
is information on both sides. The front is the
route from Civic Center to the Bay Bridge.
On the back is a big San Francisco map
which indicates ten notable attractions we
visited in one day. The booklet has more
detailed information for tourists, such as a
188
San Francisco Muni map and an introduction
to twelve scenic spots.

intro
My thesis project is aimed at increasing
donations to Human Resource Charities by
creating trust through organizational and
financial transparency. approach
Design an app that lets donors keep track of
how their money is utilized and see where
it goes within the charity; a video to give
people an overall understanding of charities’
transparency; a website for downloading the
app, promoting the video and providing some
updated news. For the logo, I combined the
two words ‘Clear’ and ‘Giving’ into ClearGiving.
The G was created to be like a magnifying
glass, which is related to my goal of providing
transparent information. For the overall visual
design, I applied blue because it implies trust.
Through transparency, donors can gain more

understanding and also have increased trust in charities.
