“Jolly Phonics is the most extensive programme that I have ever worked with. It builds confidence and gives all children wonderful tools to use when approaching new vocabulary. - Linda Drate, teacher 3
Phonics & Grammar A whole-school approach to high-quality literacy teaching The programme continues through the school years, by extending the earlier phonics teaching with further spelling, grammar and punctuation concepts. Each year of teaching provides continuous revision and consolidation of topics taught in previous years. This enables children to spell and punctuate more accurately, use a wider vocabulary and have a clear understanding of how language works.
Phonics (ages 4-5)
Children are taught the 42 letter sounds, how to write them, how to blend the sounds for reading and identify the sounds in words for spelling and writing. Alongside this children learn about tricky words as well as being introduced to the alternative spelling of vowels.
Grammar (ages 5-11)
Children are introduced to parts of speech to include nouns, verbs, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions and conjunctions. Colours and actions are used to help children identify parts of speech in sentences.
The examples above show how children are taken through the various forms that verbs may take. 4
These pages show how phonics, grammar, spelling and punctuation concepts are introduced through the programme. These pages are from the Phonics and Grammar Pupil Books. The same content can also be found in the Phonics and Grammar Handbooks.
7 Year Programme Progression Spelling (ages 5-11)
The examples below show how children are taken through the different spellings of the /ai/ sound.
Children are initially taught one way of spelling a sound before gradually learning that the same sound can be represented in a number of different forms. They start with the common variations, before progressing to other, more unusual spelling patterns that occur as the children develop their vocabulary for reading and writing.
Punctuation (ages 5-11)
Children are introduced to punctuation concepts and continue to revise these throughout the school years. Starting with full stops and speech marks, children will then learn how to use exclamation and question marks, colons and semi-colons, hyphens, commas, bullet points and much more.
The examples above show how children are introduced to new punctuation. 5

Step-by-step plans for every lesson are included Bursting with practical, playful and purposeful activities to keep children active and engaged Provides detailed insights on the teaching approach Continuous revision and consolidation of topics previously taught Use in conjunction with phonics classroom resources (pages 10-15) and decodable readers (pages 16-19) so children can apply their skills
These core resources enable you to teach the 5 key skills needed for reading and writing.
1. Learning the letter sounds
Children are taught the 42 main letter sounds. This includes alphabet sounds and digraphs, such as /sh/, /th/, /ai/ and /ue/.
2. Learning letter formation
Using different multisensory methods, children learn how to form and write the letters.
3. Blending
Children are taught how to blend the sounds together to read and write new words.
Letter Sound Order
Listening for the sounds in words gives children the best start for improving spelling.
5. Learning tricky words
Tricky words have irregular spellings and children learn these separately.
Additional topics covered in these resources Alternatives
The sounds are taught in a specific order (not alphabetically). The first group has been chosen as it makes more simple three letter words than any other six letters. This enables children to begin building words as early as possible.

With 54 decodable readers, children can explore and enjoy a range of engaging stories. The readers have a second text, which is more phonically regular. Children can refer down to this text for help if they get stuck. For additional support, the TalkingPEN can also read each page for the child.
Perfect for ESL children
Children who do not have English as their first language need guidance in saying the letter sounds correctly, which is just what the TalkingPEN provides. They may also need the guidance in blending sounds to read words. The result is an amazing improvement in their articulation of English.
Jolly Buddies
Phonics Buddies are pairings of an older child, such as a child from Year 6, and a younger child, who work together with Jolly Phonics Extra. The older child is asked to help the younger child, but in practice, both of them might be struggling. With Phonics Buddies they both benefit by working together.
