Jolly Phonics Word Book A great teaching resource for blending and dictation
In Jolly Phonics students are taught to read by blending letter sounds to form words. At the same time, they are taught to write by identifying the sounds in words and knowing which letters relate to these sounds. The Jolly Phonics Word Book provides groups of words that can be used in blending and dictation practice. The early groups have been organized to help teachers and parents choose suitable words that only use the letter sounds and vowel spellings introduced so far. The number of letter sounds used grows from group to group and there are also useful sets of words with consonant blends, alternative vowel spellings, and tricky words.

Introduction Reading: Children are taught to read by blending the letter sounds in regular words, for example ‘p-i-n’ is ‘pin’. This book provides words that are suitable for blending practice, including words made using the Jolly Phonics groups: Group 1: ‘s, a, t, i, p, n’. Group 2: ‘c, k, e, h, r, m, d’. Group 3: ‘g, o, u, l, f, b’.
When reading words with initial consonant blends, children should blend the consonants first, for example ‘pl-u-m’ and not ‘p-l-u-m’.
Digraphs: In English there are over 40 letter sounds but only 26 letters. This means that digraphs (where two letters make one sound) are used, for example the ‘sh’ in ‘fish’. It is important for children to blend words which contain digraphs. Writing: The main skill for writing is being able to hear the sounds in words and knowing how to write the appropriate letter(s) for those sounds. ‘Dog’ is made of ‘d-o-g’, for example. Children need practice in writing regular words. The words in the first column of each page are particularly suitable for dictation.
Tricky words: These are frequently used words that are ‘tricky’ to blend. This is either because the words use phonic knowledge that the children have not been taught yet (as in the ‹i_e› spelling in ‘like’), or because the spelling is irregular (as in ‘said’, ‘one’ and ‘two’). The children have to remember the ‘tricky’ part. 2
