Exercise: A Productivity Killer
According to the CDC, nearly 7 out of 10 Americans are so out of shape their excess weight is negatively impacting their work. Think about that. Not just for you, but for everyone that matters to your bottom line. Since it has been repeatedly proven that an alert body and an active lifestyle can increase both profitability and self-worth, consider how much more money could be made if you exercised more and dropped inches from your frame.
When making these calculations consider that average office worker spends up to six or more hours a day sitting at their desk staring at computer screens. Both of these activities, uninterrupted for extended periods, can be harmful to your team and to its productivity.
As an entrepreneur, you need to consider how you can change your team’s approach to staying healthy. After all, everyone wants to be more productive, right? Well, you could just give everyone an extra half-hour to exercise during lunch. Or‌you could try something a bit more radical and, dare I say it, effective.
Option 1 – Rethink your work environment. Break free of the traditional pattern of cubicle farms that limit movement and personal freedom. Instead, follow the example of some companies, such as Motorola and Google, which not only allow, but also encourage employee movement, interaction and work portability.
Option 2 – Begin where you are. If your company is not in a position to do something radical, there are options to help you and your team stay active, fit and more productive. Encourage stretching and exercises that can be done at your desk. Or find a happy medium and pick up some exercise equipment for employees to use on site. A relatively small initial investment could yield big dividends in the form of a healthier, happier and more productive workforce.
