personal info
E-mail: jonas@callewaert.net I’m a student at UGent at the Industrial Design Centre taking a master degree in Industrial Design. The choice for Industrial Design came both from a passion for design, and from a desire to understand the things beyond the product: how does it work? What materials are used? How can it be improved? In my design proces is, in addition to an extensive idea generation, prototyping of great importance. In this way, I try to create products that offer new opportunities without expecting big changes in the behavior of people. In the end, I try to present these products in a visual attractive way in which I don’t underestimate the power of marketing and branding.
The purpose of this portfolio is to show you a selection of some of my projects I did during my program. This containing some sketches, CAD-renders, prototypes, ...

Projectname: Inform Partners: Â UGent / *Doctors Without Borders Assignment: Design a cardboard shipping box that after transporting medication with
DWB* Â box
it, can function in a second life.
“beside bringing the medication to the problem area is infroming & educating people just as importannt. The inform-box does it both.”
Folding mechanism
Once the medication arives at the problem area, the doctors without borders unpack them. After that, the empty box can be cutted so it ends up in a full-size information board. Information can be preprinted on the cardboard or simply been written at the location itself.
Projectname: EduBots Partners: TIII / UGent Assignment: Design a robotkit for educational purpose using the Dwengo kit. It should
Edu-bots
contain 3 different robots and schools have to be able to create the kit themselve using a combination of standard parts and technics like lasercutting and 3D-printing.
“Less different parts results in more possible combinations.” Whit the 'Edubots project we attempt to create the link between todays huge variety of hardware (eg motors, servos, sensors, ...) and the even bigger amount of electromechanical knowledge. Until today, this link is virtually nonexistent. With he 'Edubot' package we want to change this. 'Unlimited Combinations, Unlimited Fun' represents the psychology behind this kit: an infinity of combinations of five basic parts results in an infinity of fun. All used components are publicly available. Beside standard components available in every do-it-yourself shop we used the technic of lasercutting. Even though it sounds futuristic to many people, it’s a simple way to produce unique pieces. Today it’s for almost everybody possible to use lasercutters in 'Fablabs' e.a.
To explain how the students have to assemble the different robots, a manual was created with every step well explained.

Projectname: The Marcell Partners: Â TII / UGent / Holst Centre / SoftKinetic Assignment: Design wearables that include new sensor technologies. The focus is on
Wearable  sensor
the user, providing a comfortable and stylish wearable sensor.
“The Marcell is an intelligent under garment that detects lower and upper back strain.” Reading recorded data

The battery and CPU is integrated in an ergonomically custom-made unit that fits seamlessly into the bottom of the shirt. When the sensors detect an overload of the back muscles, data is send to the CPU through conductive yarn. The user gets feedback by vibration-pads located nearby the sensors. This offers the user the chance to correct his posture and thereby stimulating a better pose.

this case Siemens NX). Then generate technical (correct) 2D plans based on these CAD models.

Projectname: The Next Level Partners: Â Ugent / Bolwerk Kortrijk Assignment: Design an alternative festival tent for little festivals. Approach it in a crea-
festival  tent
tive and extravagant way.
Town festivals , fairs , festivals , neighborhood parties , ... great places to meet people, but often almost impossible to hold a conversation. Oppressive atmosphere of packed people , continuous passage and a cacophony of dozens of people talking lies here at the base. The Next Level is trying to respond to this without taking away the positive elements of theze events : give people the chance to rise above the crowd, but don’t lose the touch with the event. Combining the benefits of a quiet area with the advantages of an outdoor event . Our vision can easily be compared with a sort of cocoon where you can flee.
“Bringing a festival experience to the next level. ”
Keeping to this philosophy, a number of important decisions were made: nets an important part of the design , due to the ideal combination of strength and visual openness. We literally lift people above the crowd, so the noise drops significantly and the passage of people is no longer a problem .
The project consisted of three major components: idea generation, prototyping and finally technical calculations.

Waterproof testing
Create a new market for the patentet colofast skin (a Projectname: SoftBath polyurethane rubber) currently used in dashboards. Partners: Recticel / UGent / IDC Kortrijk
Assignment: Create a new product market for Colo-Fast, a polyurethane-rubber-skin
Colo-Fast
currently used in dashboards. Make use of technics and methods which are currently used at Recticel.
PU-Foam + skin prototype
PU Prototyping
“Often when we rethink everyday products we end up with things we say about: Why didn’t we thought about this before? a softbath is one of them” In this project, the technical and scientific element has great importance. The product was created based on tests, prototypes, scientific facts. With all this info, a database was created using mindmapping structure to visualize the different info fragments.

The SoftBath provides the user a mattress feeling in bath. However, the total package goes much further: the used polyurethane foam ensures a better isolation, and the low production temperatures provide the possibilities for a wide range of inserts (jets, drain, ...). Like this there is no need for critical seals and glue. On top of that, the ultra fine texture of the skin creates a non-slip feeling that combined with the soft bath foam the high risk of accidents in the bathroom should reduce.
