1961 - 1989 The Death Strip divided a city into East and West. Present Day The current Berlin Wall Memorial site is littered with artifacts as a factual preservation of history but does little to evoke an emotional response. An insertion, a circle, bounded between two walls, attempts to capture the tension the wall created. The effect of registering the presence of others without direct contact is achieved by using a one-way mirror. After the wall was erected, its presence disappeared into the Everyday of the life going on around it. This feeling of “sameness” lasted until demolition in 1989 and only then was the impact the wall had on life in its city fully realized. In a sequence marked by a beginning, middle, and end, the magnitude of this psychological scar is realized without knowing it.

An international competition for the expansion of the Wien Museum in Vienna resulted in a proposal that considered the expanding museum’s requirements as it related to modern Vienna and the vast square the museum currently shares with the prominent Karlskirche. Involvement included parsing a design brief, concept design, digital production, model fabrication, and mailed submission of deliverables. In a team of three, I was primarily responsible for 3D modeling, rendering (V-Ray), diagramming, and model building. I provided input on board layout and was wholly responsible for one of the final renderings, from initial modeling and rendering to final edits in Photoshop.
Addition: museum entry, temporary exhibition, and loading Sunken plaza

Bridging Karlsplatz The elevated pedestrian bridge allows for movement between the Haerdtl building and proposed addition. Inside the addition, the bridge is registered as a slice through the building volume and provides vertical circulation and access to the temporary exhibitions as well as art display. Patrons ascend through the slice to a framed view of Karlsplatz before being turned to face the Haerdtl building and permanent collections.

The proposal for a mixed use development occupies a complex site, sitting on the seam between the University of Cincinnati and the surrounding neighborhood. In a roommate situation, separate and dissimilar program pieces share the same site, to make the significance of this location visible to visitors as they enter campus via car from the interstate. Academic institution, scholar’s housing, and public exhibition spaces orient themselves East/West parallel to the campus edge while multi-family housing orients itself North/South to maximize exposure to the sun.
A.
An enfilade of arches (image C) acts as the practical binding agent between the program pieces but still visually exposes the seam in between terraced housing and a blocky institutional building. A rigidly composed Eastern elevation (image B) attempts to exert its presence on a malformed intersection and a pocket park to the West softens the edge between the institutional building and campus.
B. A. Parti B. 1/16” = 1’-0” physical model C. An enfilade stretching the length of the site visibly exposes the seam in the project

“You feel as if you’ve touched the heart of the place. That’s a way of understanding. Seeing something that you never saw before, that was always there, but you were blind to it.” -Andy Goldsworthy The site for this installation, Burnet Woods, is a secluded park adjacent to the University of Cincinnati. Despite the park’s proximity to the campus and residents of the Clifton neighborhood, it is largely underutilized due to its intimidating appearance. Circuit aims to reactivate and transform this neglected public space. The installation both celebrates the simplicity of a floating white balloon and identifies the pond in Burnet Woods as a center for activity. Balloons trace the existing walking path around the water, leading visitors on a passeggiata, or walk, around the pond. The site-generated installation was the result of a series of on-site prototypes, which became a way to understand the transformative power of the balloon as it relates to site and self. Design decisions relating to balloon placement were made based on mock-ups that also explored illumination and inflation strategies.
